This is a point of connection between the Eleventh and Twelfth Regions. Since 1985, Puerto Montt has become
a business center in salmon production.
Originally, this place was covered by a dense jungle.
In 1852, the first German settlers arrived, by sea, to this place.
The transition from town to city was slow. Since 1912, with the opening of the railroad from Puerto Montt-
Santiago, the city grew rapidly. It turned into a linked part for the territories of Chiloé, Aisén and Magallanes.

Among its most important beaches, it is possible to mention: Pelluco, Metri, Chinchihue, Piedra Azul and

Balneario Pelluco. It has hotels and restaurants specialized in “curantos” (typical food). It is located 3 km
from Puerto Montt.
Angelmo. This used to be a little park in the 19th century. It is interesting to visit the famous handicraft fair
of Angelmó and the shellfish market.
Among the tourist attractions of Angelmó, it is possible to mention:
- The ship and ferry port (which traverses the south of Chiloé, Aisén, Laguna San Rafael and Puerto Natales).
- Puerto de Las Islas (where boats and sailboats depart to the islands of Reloncavi and the Archipelago of
Chiloé).
Calbuco. It is a town that was founded in 1602. It is 250 years older than Puerto Montt. A typical Chilote boat
is the most famous attraction of the port; it has a capacity for 10 passengers in order to make trips around the
bay.

Hornopiren. A town that is located at the foot of the Hornopirén volcano. It has a simple tourist

Blanco and Cholgo.
It is interesting to visit: Termas de Llancahue, National Park of Hornopirén, Fiordo Coman and the Termas de
Cahuelmo.

Path to San Carlos of Bariloche
This path crosses the National Parks of Puyehue (Chile) and Nahuel Huapi (Argentina).
248 kilometers from Osorno and 151 kilometers from the Complejo Fronterizo Cardenal Antonio Samore a
paved road connects the region.
Complejo Fronterizo Cardenal Antonio Samore. It is located 97 kilometers from Osorno, in the midst of
the native jungle. It has different tourist services and a coffee shop.
Shedules: from the first of May to the second Saturday of October, from 9:00 to 19:00. The rest of the year,
the visits are from 8:00 to 21:00.
Puerto Montt tourist information
This is the capital city of the Lakes Region X, the last city in its longitudinal valley. Puerto
Montt was founded in 1853 by Vicente Perez Rosales as part of the policy of settling the area
promoted by the government of the time. A year before, the first German immigrants to the
country had arrived in the area, and the city, along with Valdivia and Osorno, retains much of
their influence. The bay of Puerto Montt extends over the northern part of the Seno de
Reloncavi, with a view of the distant Corcovado and Michinmahuida volcanoes. The central
business and service section of the city lies around Manuel Irrazabal Square, with a nice view of
the sea, and the Cathedral located north of the square. From the square westwards is the John
Paul II Museum, which commemorates the visit of His Holiness the Pope in 1987, as well as
housing articles from the culture of the indigenous peoples and the German settlers. Further on
rise the harbor works and the Handicrafts Fair, where a variety of characteristic articles
produced by local artists can be seen and purchased. At the end of the street is the Caleta
Angelmo, famous for its fair and traditional restaurants, especially those where every sort of fish
and seafood, in particular the local "curanto," can be sampled. Along the same coast road
eastwards of the city is Pelluco Beach, with its beautiful residences, very good restaurants,
discotheques, and pubs.
From Puerto Montt southwards along the Pan American Highway, the Island of Chiloe can be
reached by ferry for a visit to Ancud and Castro, in addition to the small rustic towns with their
wooden houses over the water and the picturesque, peaceful scenery. The Southern Longitudinal
Highway can also be reached from the city. Construction of it began in the 1970s, and after
enormous efforts to overcome the huge adversities of climate and broken terrain, the Region o f
Aysen was joined by land to the rest of the country. Many excursions and trips are now made
along this road to admire the beauties offered by its natural parks. Going north twenty
kilometers (12 mi) from Puerto Montt is Lake Llanquihue and the beautiful city of Puerto Varas,
surrounded by pretty scenery, with good hotels and restaurants and a Casino. Taking the road
around the lake southwards, the Rapids of the River Petrohue can be seen and Lake Todos los

3. Santos, with its unmatched view, can be reached. Puerto Montt has a great deal of trade and
excellent hotel and restaurant facilities.
Chiloe
The Isla Grande de Chiloé is located 1186 kilometers south of Santiago and 90 kilometers
southwest of Puerto Montt. Amongst its many attractions are its woodem architechtonic
constructions, its houses on stilts and its many churches, most of them declared as Patrimony to
Humanity Sites. The local culture includes a spiritual mix of mithology and catholicism, and the
people are well known for their kindness.
Tourism in Chiloé Island
Distance: 135 Kilometers away from Puerto Montt
It is a group of islands formed by rugged sediments, it is located in the Southern part of Chile.
Chiloé comprises the Isla Grande de Chiloé, the Archipelago of the inner islands, the fiord of Coman and the
fiord of Remihue. The main attractions of this zone are its several islands.
The Isla Grande de Chiloé. It is 180 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide. It is covered by great masses of
quaternary glazier deposits. The rest of the territory is formed by plateaus, recommended for sub artic
cultivations and covered by coniferous woods.
Archipelago of Chiloé. It comprehends a group of 5 islands:
- Quehui, including 2 islands.
- Chaulinec, including 3 islands.
- Desertores, including 6 islands.
- Chauques, including 16 islands.
You can get access to these islands by departing from Castro, except Lemuy and Quinchao.
How to get there
There are three ports from where the boat traffic departs to the islands:
Castro. Daily departures to the islands of Chelin and Quehui. (Returning the same day).
Achao. Daily departures to the islands of Chaulinec and Apiao. (Returning the same day).
Tenaun. Weekly departures to the island of Chauques.
It is also possible to rent boats in order to visit the archipelago.
