1. Question 1.
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. For my music magazine I decided to keep a lot of
the typical conventions you would see in a
magazine as it would make it instantly more
recognisable and that is one of the aims. You
want the audience to see exactly what you are
putting across therefore making it more likely
that they will buy it. I use common elements like
headlines, straplines, barcodes, issue number,
pugs and puffs. I wanted to keep the format of
the magazine fairly simple, as indie music
doesn't have a lot in it so I wanted to keep it true
to the genre of music.
3. From doing the similar text analysis I saw that some of the
most popular and well supported magazines all
consisted of the same features therefore meaning that's
what the audience expects. From these expectations
that is what you should deliver to make it more suitable
for your target audience. I learned that the main image is
very important, it can be the one thing pulling someone
to that magazines and therefore needs to make an
impact. Surrounding the main image are the headlines
and straplines which are again important as they give a
hint towards what people will see in the magazine. I
learned that particular colours go with different genres,
for example for indie simple colours like black and white
along with a feature colour like a brighter blue work well
whereas bright colours like baby blues, pinks, yellows
and greens represent pop more.
4. I didn't to make the magazine too over the top and
complicated, especially the front cover as I wanted it to
represent the genre of music it was about, in this case
was Indie which is a fairly simple genre of music anyway.
They focus on what they have on hand to make the
music, not necessarily going to the newest recording
studio. I didn’t want to crowd the front page as I wanted
the main image to have as much impact as possible, it
was going to be the selling feature of the magazine. It
also let’s the reader know what to expect from the
magazine so you want it to make a good impression.
Clash magazine is a good example of
where little text and a good image can
make a large reaction and catches peoples
eye.
