Air masses are large bodies of air that take on the characteristics of the regions where they originate. They form over land or water surfaces and then move across the Earth's surface, carrying their characteristic temperatures and moisture levels with them. As air masses move across regions with different temperatures or terrain, they can gain or lose heat and moisture, which leads to changes in weather conditions in the areas they pass over.
