2. COMPANY OVERVIEW
Power Grid Corporation Of India is an Indian state
owned electric utilities company headquartered in
Gurgaon Delhi.
Power Grid wheels about 50% of the total power
generated in India on its transmission network.
Power Grid has a pan-India presence with around
1,00,619 Circuit-km of Transmission network and 168
HVAC(High Voltage Alternating Current) & HVDC
(High Voltage Direct Current)sub-stations with a total
transformation capacity of 1,64,763 MVA(Million Volt
Amperes).
3. WHY WAS POWER GRID CREATED?
It is the central transmission utility of India and
owns one of the largest transmission networks in
the world.
The company came to existence in
September/October 1989.
. It was carved out of various distributing agencies
of the states with an initial workforce of about
4500.
The main aim of the company was to integrate the
distribution of the power across the country.

5. CONCEPT OF MAHARATNA ,NAVRATNA.
In 2009 concept of Maharatna was established by
government of India.
Maharatna companies can invest up to 5000 Cr or
15% of net worth without government permission .
They can investment this corpus without explicit
government approval.
Concept was introduced to give the PSES advantage
give them greater autonomy and make them global
giants to avoid red tapism.

7. NAVRATNA CONCEPT
The Navratna status is offered to PSEs, which gives
a company enhanced financial and operational
autonomy and empowers it to invest up to Rs.
1000 crore or 15% of their net worth on a single
project without seeking government approval.
In a year, these companies can spend up to 30% of
their net worth not exceeding Rs. 1000 cr. They
will also have the freedom to enter joint ventures,
form alliances and float subsidiaries abroad.

POWER TRANSMISSION
Our core business is the transmission of electric
power. As on 31st May 2013, we own and operate
more than 1,01,334 Ckt. kms network of
transmission lines, 1,64,813 MVA transformation
capacity and 168 nos. substations that constitutes
most of India’s interstate and inter-regional
electric power transmission system and carries
electric power across India. Total Inter-regional
power transfer capacity is 31,850 MW.
11. TELECOM
POWERGRID with its brand name ‘POWERTEL’ in
Telecom business is the only utility in the Country
having overhead optic fiber network using Optical
Ground Wire on power transmission lines.
POWERGRID has an all India Broad Band Telecom
Network of about 25000 Kms.
12. DOMESTIC CONSULTANCY
Building upon its un-matched techno-managerial
excellence in various fields of power system,
POWERGRID has been providing one stop
consultancy services to State owned utilities, Private
utilities, Central Public Sector Undertakings and
Government departments. It has a client base of
around 125 in power sector and is expanding.

16. LATEST NEWS
Plan to create the largest integrated power
distribution and transmission network in the world
by 2017 as per the 12th five year plan.
Alstom T&D India has concluded the successful
delivery of Power Grid Corporation of India
Limited’s (PGCIL) 230 kV transmission project,
worth around INR 1050 million (€15 million), in
Myanmar.
Already a market leader in transmission in India,
this project marks Power Grid Corporations first
steps into neighboring countries such as Myanmar.
