Starting waste segregation on a street

Steps

1. Decide on starting date and time. Decide on the date and time and venue for an introductory talk, and
for the start of the segregated waste collection. The venue should ideally be on your street itself.

2. Print invitations and explanations for the introductory talk.
- Print a copy of the invitation for each of the homes, offices and other commercial establishments on the
street. Use the template file IntroInvite.doc.
- Print a copy of the explanation for beginners for each of the homes, offices and other commercial
establishments on the street. Use the file ExplanationForBeginners.doc, print on both sides.
- Print the attendance sheet from the file Attendees.doc.

3. Map your street. Collect the names, house numbers and cell phone number of every occupied building
and enter them in a printed version of the document StreetMap.xls. As you are doing this, also invite the
residents to the introductory talk and hand over the printed invitation cards.

4. 1 day before introductory talk. Send out an SMS reminder with the text Intro Reminder in the file
SMStemplates.doc.

5. 3 days before introductory talk
Ensure that everything is ready. Checklist of things required:
•Venue
•Projector
•Screen for projector
•Laptop
•1 copy of Attendees.doc
•Copies of ExplanationForBeginners.doc equal to number of homes on street.

6. Introductory talk. Explain the idea - why segregation of waste at source is important and how it is done.
•As people enter the meeting, mark the people on the attendance sheet. Give the 'Explanation for
     beginners' document.
     •Do the presentations WasteSegregation-Why.ppt and WasteSegregation-how.ppt.
•Do a live demonstration of putting assorted dry waste into the appropriate bags.
•Decide the date and time of the first collection jointly with the Sada Zero volunteers, and announce this.
Note that the collection will be done at the same day and time every week. The day of the first collection
must be the within a week of the meeting.
•As people are leaving, give each person a set of bags and record this on the attendance sheet.

7. Give bags to remaining people. Use the attendance sheet and street map to determine people who did
not attend the meeting. Go to each of these people's houses, introduce the concept, give the bags and
inform them of the date time of the first collection.

8. First collection.
•SMS a reminder to all residents the evening before the collection day. Use the text Collection Reminder in
the file SMStemplates.doc.

•Collect a large group of residents of the street (preferably including children) to walk down the street for the
collection run.
•Meet the resource collector on his tricycle and commence from one end of the street. Ensure that members
of the residents' group collect bags themselves from homes.
•If bags are not at the gate, ring the bell and ask for them. Remind the people in the home to place keep
bags at the gate the next time onwards.
•If you find incorrect contents in the bags, politely explain the segregation rules again. Return the empty
bags on the spot or hang them back where they were before.
•As you collect from each home, fill in the columns in SteetMap.xls. Fill in the Week1 column in the Street
map.
•At the end of the collection calculate what percentage of people did both the following:
         - Gave bags with the correct content
         - Had the bags ready at the gate
•Keep a record and inform Das of the percentage at 98458 58188.

9. Subsequent collections.
Give replacement bags to people who have lost their bags.
Review the previous week's Street map entries to determine the homes that did incorrect segregation or did
not have the bags at the gate. Spend extra time at these homes for a quick refresher training.
Focus on enrolling offices and commercial establishments into the program. Give them Jumbo bags (the
large ones).
Repeat the process of the first collection for 3 more weeks.
Your goal is to reach a compliance percentage of 80 %. This means 80 % of homes:
1.Give properly segregated waste
2.Leave it at the gate before the collection time.
