1. Darwin International Airport
Expansion Project
May 2013
Since its beginnings as little more than a landing strip at Fannie Bay, Darwin International Airport (DIA) has been
an important part of the Top End community and a key contributor to its economy. Last year we had 2.25 million
passengers through our doors and we expect this number to keep climbing, as new airlines join us and route
opportunities open up throughout Asia.
All of this means we need more capacity. We need a bigger, more efficient terminal that can offer our visitors a
better customer experience and will support our airline partners to build their businesses—improvements that will
benefit our local tourism industry and regional economy.
DIA's Terminal Expansion:
o is the biggest project undertaken by DIA since the current terminal opened in 1991
o includes $60 million in total upgrades
o will see the terminal double in size, growing from 16,000 to 27,000 square metres
o will create room for improved baggage systems and security screening areas, additional departure
lounge facilities and a larger check-in area
o includes a larger, revamped Qantas lounge and the Territory's first Virgin Australia lounge
o will feature exciting new retail and food and beverage outlets, the first of which, Bumbu, will open
in late June.
What changes will I see?
The Terminal Expansion Project (TXP) is made up of two main components—the extension of the terminal at its
eastern and western ends, and the redevelopment of areas within the existing terminal incl uding retail upgrades.
Construction work at the two ends of terminal will be contained within closed construction zones, and because
this allows the airport to continue operating as norm al, you s houldn’t be affected by thes e works when you vis it
this year. During the first half of 2014 these developments will be connected to the existing terminal, and DIA will
aim to minimize any disruption caused by these works by providing notice ahead of time.
2. The upgrade works within the terminal are more visible. These have been staged to ensure disruption is
reduced—only when work is completed on one group of stores does it begin on another, so the offering remains
as varied as possible. We also open temporary outlets so that 24-hour service is maintained—and you can
always get a coffee! If you’re pas s ing through the term inal s oon, you’ll s ee:
o Bumbu and Hungry Jack’s opening in late June
o Hoarding going up around the site of Dôme Café, a new outlet in Domestic Departures that will
trans form the old smoker’s deck into a 170-seat restaurant with tarmac views. Dôme Café will
open early next year
o Hoarding going up around the site of the existing ground-floor café. A temporary outlet will be
open 24-hours. It will re-open as Giancarlo Café and Bar in August.
Other changes
Builder Watpac is currently establishing construction sites at either end of the terminal and conducting
preparatory demolition work (there is currently no change to public access via these entrances). From mid June,
you’ll s ee hoardings go up ins ide the term inal at its eas tern end, followed by the wes tern end of the term inal in
July. After thes e dates , you’ll be able to acces s the term inal as norm al through the s lidi ng doors at the
Departures and Arrivals areas in front of the terminal, and access to the public toilets at the western end will
remain unchanged.
Beginning 3rd July, piling works will begin at the eastern end and machinery will be brought on site. This should
have no impact on the public as it will only be operating within the established construction zone.
As the Terminal Expansion team are preparing construction sites at either end of the terminal, the permit car park
at the eastern end of the terminal has been closed. As a result, parking bays in the western end of the Short
Term Car Park have been allocated for these permit-holders and this area is now closed to the public.
To access the Short Term Car Park as normal, use the main entry (the firs t available entry) on Henry Wrigley
Drive. There is another entrance further along Henry Wrigley Drive in front of the terminal; use the right -hand lane
and you will see the boom gate entry on your right. It is the third and final boom-gate entry that is now permit-only
and closed to the public.
When will it all be finished?
3. In the firs t quarter of 2014 you’ll s tart to notice cons truction activity get bus ier as cons truction at either end gets
ready to break through and connect with the existing terminal. In the middle of next year we’ll begin to hand over
some of these sites to the airlines and retailers that will fit them out, for example the Qantas and Virgin lounges
and the JR Duty Free s tores . We’ll be letting you know with plenty of notice when thes e changeovers will be
going on and will be working to ensure they have as little impact on your journey as possible.

QUESTIONS:
1. Please explain the basic changes people will have upon the expansion of the terminal.
2. How much does the project cost?
3. What happens to the parking parks?
4. Compare the floor plan of Darwin International Airport to Soekarno-Hatta International airport.
