Fear of cycling, like every other fear, is possible. It is real and exists relative to other fears.
Explanations for cyclophobia vary and range from physical factors and emotional barriers.
Fear of Dying
Cyclists enjoy moving through open public spaces, and although they move in a less mediated way
than people in cars, the activity produces a thrill that those who fear cycling associate with the
concept of death.
Advocates of biking, however, maintain that cycling is highly unlikely to be fatal. According to
statistics, riding a bike is significantly safer than other sports such as white-water rafting, horse
riding, or even golf or gardening.

And Other Faces of Fear
Other than the fear of dying or crashing, some with cyclophobia also fear looking incompetent on a
bike, displaying their bodies or physical incapability in public, and being harassed by strangers. As for
bike lovers, these experiences only add to the whole experience of moving through the city.
Like all types of fear, fear of cycling is socially variable. Simply put, it will depend on personality,
where a person lives, as well as the time of day they decide to go out and try cycling. Overtime, the fear
will have the natural tendency to be culturally embedded, and therefore, difficult to change.
However, as with most things, it is worth trying something just for the sake of experience, or in this
case, in an attempt to get over the fear. Australia is generally a safe region for cycling, and as statistics
suggest it accounts for a mere 2%of road vehicular fatalities. It is easy to let go of fears and battle
personal little demons by cycling through the beautiful cities of the Land Down Under, all of which are
excellent for the activity.
