Podcast: The Dream Act
The lady in the podcast is visiting Aurora, Illinois; which is close to Chicago, where the
population is majority Latino and growing. She visits the Mayor of Aurora, who is a white
democrat, who says the Latinos are an integral part of their city. She then visits a nurse that is
the mother of 2 teenage boys, who is a U.S. citizen that was born in Mexico that immigrated here
when she was a young girl. She doesn’t view herself as just a American but a Mexican-
American. She says she feels this way because although she has lived here for 39 years she has
never felt like the USA was home. I can completely understand why she feels that way and why
she doesn’t very herself as just an American. She then talks about the Dream Act bill that has
been blocked be congress several times. President Barrack Obama issued an executive order that
will give temporary work permeants and chances for the undocumented immigrants to go to
college. They have to be under 30, high school graduates and have been brought to the U.S.
before they were 16. She talks to a lady at this place could Family First who help immigrants
prepare for the citizenship test. The lady mentions that 10 years ago the immigrants didn’t want
to take the test because they had a dream of going back home countries one day, the langue
barrier and the fee, but now since the immigration laws have changed they’re taking them to
protect themselves from deportation. She also says America doesn’t do a good job of helping the
2. immigrants integrate into America. The podcast then talks about how in Miami Spanish is
becoming more prevalent in that area.
