Assignment 1 Discussion Individual FaithIn this course so fa.docxfredharris32
Assignment 1: Discussion: Individual Faith
In this course so far, you have spent time learning about various world religions and also the philosophy of religion. Now it is time for you to examine faith on an individual level.
In this assignment, you are going to look at the religious beliefs of one person and then categorize those beliefs. You may give a brief account of your own faith or you may interview someone and give an account of his or her faith.
Next, categorize those beliefs according to the following typology:
•Polytheist
•Monotheist
•Deist
•Pantheist
•Panentheist
•Atheist
•Agnostic
•Mystic
•Other
Describe the category you chose. Give examples of the beliefs of the person you wrote about and then explain why those beliefs belong in the category you selected.
Next, give a short answer to the following classic questions of philosophy, relative to the category you have chosen:
•What can this person believe about God and the universe?
•What must this person do to lead an ethical life?
•What may this person hope? What happens to this person when he or she dies?
Your initial response should be 2 to 3 paragraphs (250 words) in length. If you write about another person's beliefs, remember to keep that person anonymous.
After you post your initial response, please respond to a minimum of two of your peers' original posts. Remember, you are not to criticize the religious beliefs of your classmates.
By Saturday, September 13, 2014 write an account of you own religious beliefs, or those of a friend, and post that account to the Discussion Area. By Wednesday, September 17, 2014 respond to at least two original postings from your classmates.
Assignment 2: Unless I See, I Will Not Believe: The Relationship between Faith and Doubt
The words faith and doubt are easy to define, but they are much more difficult to live with. Faith is the belief in what is unseen or unsubstantiated in the physical sense as if it were in fact reality. Doubt is a particularly difficult concept for organized religions to handle—the doubts of a handful of believers, or even a single believer, can lead to a major change in a religion. Thus, as humans are we destined to doubt by human nature?
In an essay of 700 to 800 words, discuss the relationship between doubt and faith.
In your essay, address the following questions:
•What do the terms faith and doubt mean to religious philosophers?
•How do you define faith and doubt in the context of your life?
•What is the difference between saying, "I believe that," and "I believe in"?
•Is faith, in the religious sense, a matter of opinion or of trust?
•Are faith and doubt incompatible? Are they opposite or complementary?
•Discuss the religious tradition (of the five options) where faith is most prevalent. Where doubt is the most prevalent. Do these religions offer insight into your own faith/doubt equation?

Module 4.
THE DEFINITION ESSAY
How can different perspectives and premises lead to different definitions?
What does definition mean and how can I write a 1000-word definition?
Definition = Oxford dictionary states: “An exact statement or description of the nature, scope, or meaning of something”
Nature of something = what it is like and what it is not like
Scope of something = how big it is or how far it goes
Meaning of something = the category it fits in and what makes it significant
How can I write a 1000-word definition essay?
The dictionary definition is usually just the basic category. We look up a word in the dictionary to get a simple idea of the category it fits into.
For example, if I look up “faith” in the Cambridge dictionary, it says:
• “great trust or confidence in something or someone”
• “a particular religion”
• “strong belief in God or a particular religion”
This just gives me the very basic idea. It does not answer the nature, scope, and significance of the concept of faith. An essay can help me to explore the concept and truly come to understand it.
Perspective
We can come to understand a concept from different perspectives. Let’s look at the word “faith.”
What does having faith refer to if I’m talking about business? What if I am talking about my sense of myself? What if I am talking about my society and culture? What if I am talking about religion?
When you are defining a concept, first ask yourself about the origin or source of the concept. In other words, where does it come from or what causes it? For example, where does faith come from? Is it from the physical environment around me? Is it a gift of God? Is it something my mind creates? Some kind of emotion? Or is my ability to have faith somehow biological? Or maybe it is a combination of all four quadrants.
RUAH (a Hebrew word meaning “spirit” or “breath”)
When you are defining a concept, first ask yourself about the origin or source of the concept. In other words, where does it come from? For example, where does happiness come from? Is it a physical feeling? Is it a gift of God? Is it something we create with our own minds? Or is it in our biological make-up? Or maybe it is a combination of all four quadrants.
Writing the Definition Essay
Introduction:
Usually, the introduction is short (3-4 sentences). Start with a simple hook – a quote (famous quote, biblical quote, popular quote), a symbol, an image, what often comes to mind in association with the word you are going to define. Then follow the general introduction pattern (Introductory sentence + Topic sentence + Thesis)
Thesis statement (formal definition)
Term + its class/category + differentiation (what makes it unique in that category)
Note: For the class/category, consider your perspective and see the graph on the previous page.
Grammar you need for this:

how do each of the religions guide their believers in healing? Is
this an inner healing or an outer? Are we healing our souls,
minds, entire being, our community, the world-at-large, etc? If
your theme is about the nature of reality or some other
metaphysical topic, determine how the religious scriptures
inform people about how is the world.

Discussion: Religious Authority
Just about every world religion has an authority figure that presides over the religious institution and interprets and oversees the doctrine. In Christianity, for example, the structure of the religion’s institution has shifted over time and is currently rigidly centralized in some sects while decentralized in others. The related role of religious authority has been particularly contentious and has shifted as the institution itself changed over the centuries. Today, many Christian sects have split from others because of conflicting beliefs in who has authority. In this Discussion, you will compare religious authority and attendant institutions of two religions you have studied in the week’s readings.
To prepare for this Discussion:
1.
Review your course text’s selected readings for this week.
2.
Choose two religious traditions to compare. Be sure one of the traditions is the tradition you selected to focus on in your Final Project.
3.
Consider these questions:
o
Who is in charge?
o
Who is allowed a say in religious actions?
o
Are the religions deeply centralized? Loosely hierarchical?
o
How does a culture evolve and change if religious institutions govern the values and practices of the culture?
Post
a paragraph of your evaluation of religious authority and power in the two religions you chose. In a second paragraph, discuss the idea that if a higher power confers authority and shapes the religious institution, how does this influence the culture that practices the religion? Can people change values in the culture if the religion originally sets the precedence? Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.
Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week’s Learning Resources or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.

Week 3 Milestone: Pillars of Analysis
As you have read, all religious traditions share three basic characteristics from which we may analyze the religion and compare it to other religions. For your Final Project, you will focus on a single pillar of analysis from which you will engage in a deeper study of a religious tradition.
For this worksheet activity, select the pillar of analysis you wish to focus on. Identify the pillar of analysis in the writing space below. Finally, include a 100- to 150-word short response sharing why you selected this pillar of analysis. What about this pillar is especially interesting to you? As you have read, all religious traditions share three basic characteristics from which we may analyze the religion and compare it to other religions. For your Final Project, you will focus on a single pillar of analysis from which you will engage in a deeper study of a religious tradition.
For this worksheet activity, select the pillar of analysis you wish to focus on. Identify the pillar of analysis in the writing space below. Finally, include a 100- to 150-word short response sharing why you selected this pillar of analysis. What about this pillar is especially interesting to you? Do you feel that you personally relate to it more than the others? If so, why?

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
