An engineering drawing, is a detailed, precise diagram or plan that conveys information about how an object functions or is constructed. Engineers, electricians, and contractors all use these drawings as guides when constructing or repairing objects and buildings. The easiest way to prepare a technical drawing is to generate one automatically from a CAD design. In SolidWorks, for example, this simply involves selecting Make Drawing from Part/Assembly in the Standard toolbar, then selecting a predefined template. The software will automatically generate views and features as selected, and the drawing can then be exported.

Technical drawing is the act and discipline of
composing drawings that visually communicate how
something functions or is constructed. This is essential for
communicating ideas in industry and engineering. To make
the drawings easier to understand, people use
familiar symbols, perspectives, units of
measurement, notation systems, visual styles,
and page layout. Together, such conventions constitute
a visual language and help to ensure that the drawing
is unambiguous and relatively easy to understand.
