1. The Westmont Montessori School provides an environment that fosters
independence, self-esteem, integrity, and personal responsibility. Our
Montessori curriculum empowers each child by providing the foundation to
excel academically, to develop respect for self and others, and to value the world
in which we live. Self-confidence and a lifelong love of learning characterize the
Westmont graduate.
In the autumn of 1963, the late Sandy Dwyer, a local resident, read an article in
The New York Times about Maria Montessori and her teaching method. “I think
we need a Montessori school,” she told her husband Jim. He encouraged her to
take action, and the Westmont legacy began. Mr. and Mrs. Dwyer found other
interested local people who also had young children. Posting notices in nearby
towns brought over a hundred parents to a meeting in St. Lawrence Church in
Chester on a freezing cold night in February, 1964. As a result, a Board of
Trustees was formed. Westmont’s original class was held at the Community
Presbyterian Church in Chester.
2. Early Childhood Overview: The Journey of Discovery
In the Early Childhood classrooms, children ages 3-6 are
combined to form a community of learners. This three
year cycle allows children to experience growing up with
the same children and teacher for several years, provides
learning and mentoring opportunities for the children,
and teaches compassion and patience.
The Westmont Early Childhood curriculum
encompasses the learning of mathematics, language
arts, practical life skills, science, and cultural studies
through the use of hands-on, interactive activities and
lessons.
3. Seeking opportunities to expand the child’s world, a variety of classes,
taught by specialists, are included in our Early Childhood and Kindergarten
programs. These include:
Music: Every student benefits from an expansive music
repertoire that includes themes such as rhythm, seasonal
songs, exposure to renowned composers, and
multicultural music.
Art: In addition to art activities provided in the
classroom, frequently the children have an enriching
hands-on experience in art media, provided by our Artist-
in-Residence.
Drama: Kindergarten students engage in a dramatic
performance each year after learning about the elements
of the theater.
4. At Westmont we offer several amazing summer programs to be mixed and
matched to fit all of your summer needs. All programs are open to children from
the community, including those not enrolled at Westmont during the school
year.
Westmont alumni who are at least 12 years of age, are eligible to participate in
our Volunteer Junior Camp Counselor Program. Please check back in the
spring for information about becoming a Junior Camp Counselor this summer.
