Intro: That blessed Hope
1Thess1:10
10) And to wait for his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus,
which delivered us from the wrath to come.
1Thess2:19-20
19) For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of
rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of
our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
20) For ye are our glory and joy.
2. 1Thess3:13
13) To the end he may stablish your hearts
unblameable in holiness before God, even our
Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ with all his saints.
1Thess4:17-18
17) Then we which are alive and remain shall
be caught up together with them in the clouds,
to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever
be with the Lord.
18) Wherefore comfort one another with these
words.
1Thess5:23-24
23) And the very God of peace sanctify you
wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and
soul and body be preserved blameless unto
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24) Faithful is he that calleth you, who also
will do it.
3. I. The honeymoon is over
In 2Thes it seems Paul’s vocabulary has
changed.
The word “tribulation” was used only once in
1Thes; and now we see it twice in the first
chapter of 2Thes.
Missing from 1Thes is a word he now uses three
times “Trouble” (1:6, 7; 2:2).
Another new word for 2Thes is the word
“Persecutions” (1:4).
This second book of Thes. Is not a depressing
book but, just as Paul was given a thorn in the
4. flesh, to balance out the manifold revelation also
given; So, in this book we find a new
counterweight to expect in the Christian life to
give us a proper balance. Namely “Trouble”.
2Thess 1:4
4) So that we ourselves glory in you in the
churches of God for your patience and faith in
all your persecutions and tribulations that ye
endure:
2Thess1:5
5) Which persecutionsand tribulations
is a manifest token
of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may
be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for
which ye also suffer:
5. 2Thess1:6
6) Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to
recompense tribulation to them that trouble
you;
Trouble is a nuisance designed to direct
your attention.
Isa 1:14
14) Your new moons and your appointed
feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble
unto me; I am weary to bear them.
6. II. Treatment for Trouble.
Paul now prescribes a pill to make Trouble
tolerable.
2Thess 1:7
7) And to you who are troubled rest with us,
when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from
heaven with his mighty angels,
Rest in the fact of the blessed hope
found in 1Thes, as the focus for
todays anticipation.
…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed…
7. 2Thess1:10
10) When he shall come to be glorified in his
saints, and to be admired in all them that
believe (because our testimony among you was
believed) in that day.
2Thess1:8-9
8) In flaming fire taking vengeance on them
that know not God, and that obey not the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9) Who shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord,
and from the glory of his power;
2Chr 15:2
And he went out to meet Asa, and said
unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all
Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with
8. you, while ye be with him; and if ye
seek him, he will be found of you; but if
ye forsake him, he will forsake you.
III. Tool for Temperament.
Meanwhile back on planet earth:
2Thess 1:12
12) That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
may be glorified in you, and ye in him,
according to the grace of our God and the Lord
Jesus Christ.
9. How can that be accomplished?
2Thess1:11
11) Wherefore also we pray always for you,
that our God would count you worthy of
this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure
of his goodness, and the work of faith with
power:
IV. Calling of Contradiction.
When a man begins to head toward God one of
the first callings of God, he receives is
“trouble”.
10. 2Cor 4:8
8) We are troubled on every side, yet not
distressed; we are perplexed, but not in
despair;
John5:4
4) For an angel went down at a certain
season into the pool, and troubled the water:
whosoever then first after the troubling of
the water stepped in was made whole of
whatsoever disease he had.
John11:33
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and
the Jews also weeping which came with her,
he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
John12:27
Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I
say? Father, save me from this hour: but for
this cause came I unto this hour.
11. Trouble God guides with, has a purpose
and is for a limited time (this hour).
V. Tutor or Terror.
There is a good trouble and a bad
trouble.
2Thess 2:2
2) That ye be NOT soon shaken in mind, or be
troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor
by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is
at hand.
12. John14:1
1) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in
God, believe also in me.
John14:27
27) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give
unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto
you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it
be afraid.
The world gives false peace and false
trouble.
Isa 57:20
20) But the wicked are like the troubled sea,
when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire
and dirt.
13. 2Cor 12:7-9
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure
through the abundance of the revelations,
there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the
messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should
be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that
it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient
for thee: for my strength is made perfect in
weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather
glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me.
Heb6:7-8
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that
cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs
meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth
blessing from God:
14. 8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is
rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is
to be burned.
The red rose bush,
A thorn adorns,
That even those,
Less embellished,
When brushing by,
Will of their own supply,
A bright red apply.
