DIVINE JEALOUSY
1. Divine Jealousy
Text: Nah 1:2-7
2
God is jealous,
and the LORD revengeth;
the LORD revengeth, and is furious;
the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries,
and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
3
The LORD is slow to anger,
and great in power,
and will not at all acquit the wicked:
the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind
and in the storm,
and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4
He rebuketh the sea,
and maketh it dry,
and drieth up all the rivers:
As such it is mysterious, violent, and swift,
immeasurable and unstoppable.
Bashan languisheth, and Carmel,
and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
2. 5
The mountains quake at him,
and the hills melt, and
the earth is burned at his presence,
yea, the world,
and all that dwell therein.
6
Who can stand before his indignation?
and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger?
his fury is poured out like fire,
and the rocks are thrown down by him.
7
The LORD is good,
a strong hold in the day of trouble;
and he knoweth them that trust in him.
The prophet describes the unyielding justice of God,
and the power he exercises over this world.
God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth, three times in the
first 6books of the Bible; Exo 20:5 Deu 4:24 Jos 24:19.
Exod 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor
serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto
the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; KJV
3. Deut 4:24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire,
even a jealous God. KJV
Josh 24:19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot
serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous
God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
KJV
God here is ready to defend his honor against all who
oppose him.
Is furious; the master of fury
He reserveth wrath.
This description of God is intended to show the
destruction of Assyria is his doing,
and that it is certain.
I Jealousy’sNecessity(Nah 1:2)
Jealous:
Nah 1:2
2God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD
revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his
adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
4. His character demands this.
"He will by no means clear the guilty."
If he did he would
contradict his character,
falsify his word, and
endanger his people.
A.For His Glory
that no rival may claim worship.
Ps 29:2
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship
the LORD in the beauty of holiness. KJV
Ps 81:9
There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou
worship any strange god. KJV
Matt 4:10
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is
written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him
only shalt thou serve. KJV
5. B.For His Holiness
God can have no tolerance for sin or holiness would be
tainted.
Deut 29:20
The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the
LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and
all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon
him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under
heaven. KJV
Ezek 8:3
And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a
lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the
earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God
to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh
toward the north; where was the seat of the image of
jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy. KJV
1Cor 10:22
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than
he? KJV
Heb 12:29
For our God is a consuming fire. KJV
6. II Jealousy’s Delivery. (Nah 1:2, 6)
A.The Wrath of God Is Terrible.
The prophets all describe the wrath of God as terrible
against sin and sinners.
Deut 29:28
And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and
in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into
another land, as it is this day. KJV
2Chr 28:13
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the captives
hither: for whereas we have offended against the LORD
already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath
against Israel. KJV
Jer 21:5
And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched
hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and
in great wrath. KJV
7. Zeph 1:18
Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver
them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land
shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall
make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the
land. KJV
Zech 7:12
Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they
should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of
hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets:
therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. KJV
Isa 49:26
And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh;
and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with
sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am
thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
KJV
2Cor 5:11
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade
men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also
are made manifest in your consciences. KJV
2Thess 1:6
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense
tribulation to them that trouble you; KJV
8. B.Executed by the Almighty
Ps 24:8
Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle. KJV
Ps 89:8
O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto
thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? KJV
Ps 147:5
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is
infinite. KJV
Jer 32:17
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the
earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is
nothing too hard for thee: KJV
III Jealousy’s Remedy (Nah 1:3)
God is slow to anger
His long suffering is not due to any secret sympathy with
sin, but springs solely from his mercy.
9. A.God’s Declaration
(1) Whenhe spoketo the peopleat Mount Sinai. (Exo 20:6)
Exod 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them
that love me, and keep my commandments. KJV
(2) Whenhe declaredhis Name to Moses. (Exo 34:6)
Exod 34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and
proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and
gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and
truth, KJV
B.Saints Explanation.
1) Moses, (Num 14:18)
Num 14:18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great
mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no
means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth
generation. KJV
2) David, (Psa 86:15)
Ps 86:15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion,
and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and
truth. KJV
10. 3) Jonah, (Jon4:2)
Jonah 4:2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray
thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in
my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I
knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to
anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
KJV
4) Micah, (Mic 7:18)
Mic 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth
iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of
his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he
delighteth in mercy. KJV
5) Nehemiah, (Neh 9:17)
Neh 9:17 And refused to obey, neither were mindful of
thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened
their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to
return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon,
gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great
kindness, and forsookest them not. KJV
6) Paul (Rom9:22)
Rom 9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to
make his power known, endured with much longsuffering
the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: KJV
11. 7) Peter (2Pe 3:9,2Pe 3:15)
2Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as
some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward,
not willing that any should perish, but that all should come
to repentance. KJV
2Pet 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord
is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also
according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto
you; KJV
God is infallibly sensitive.
He is Jealous, that is a sensitivity to offence.
He is love, that is sensitivity to affection.
He feels everything.
Every immoral act vibrates in the throne room of heaven;
and yet he is "slow to anger”.
When men feel anger there are many reasons to prevent
them from showing it;
but God has no such reason.
How great, then, must be his "power" in holding back his
anger!
12. If all the patience of all the angelic host of heaven were
combined in one personality,
and that personality were entrusted with the government
of this world for one day,
before the clock struck midnight he would incinerate this
earth with just cause.
God’s power of self-control is nothing less than
praiseworthy.
"He is Slow... to anger, and of great power."
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise,
as some men count slackness; but is long
suffering to usward, not willing that any should
perish, but that all should come to repentance".
(2Pe 3:9)
To “ignore” the wicked God would have to violate his law.
God has bound suffering to sin by a law as strong and as
that which binds the cold to snow.
"The wages of sin is death;"
"Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."
13. Sin leads to ruin: this is God’s law.
To "acquit" the wicked would be a violation of his word.
"The wicked shall be turned into hell, with all
the nations that forget God;"
"Unless ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish;"
"I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock
when your fear cometh.”
However wicked a man is, if he repents he can be
acquitted.
"Let the wicked forsake his ways, and the
unrighteous man his thoughts," (Isa 55:7)
Rom 8:1-2
1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in
Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me
free from the law of sin and death.
