2. Called to speak….
Nephi assigned his
brother Jacob to give a
sermon to the
Nephites, and gave
him the subject: Three
chapters of Isaiah.
These chapters will be
familiar to those who
have been reading the
assignments because
Nephi quoted parts
of them to his
brothers already.

4. Comparison of 2 Nephi to
Isaiah
2 Nephi 6: 6 And now, these
are the words: Thus saith the
Lord God: Behold, I will lift up
mine hand to the Gentiles,
and set up my standard to
the people; and they shall
bring thy sons in their arms,
and thy daughters shall be
carried upon their shoulders.
7 And kings shall be thy
nursing fathers, and their
queens thy nursing mothers;
they shall bow down to thee
with their faces towards the
earth, and lick up the dust of
thy feet; and thou shalt know
that I am the Lord;

Lord God, Behold, I will lift up
mine hand to the Gentiles,
and set up my standard to
the people: and they shall
bring thy sons in their arms,
and thy daughters shall be

23 And kings shall be thy
nursing fathers, and their
queens thy nursing mothers:
they shall bow down to thee
with their face toward the
earth, and lick up the dust of
thy feet; and thou shalt know
that I am the Lord: for they
shall not be ashamed that

6. Jacobs Sermon & Explanations
2 Nephi 9
1 And now, my beloved brethren, I have read these things
that ye might know concerning the covenants of the Lord that
he has covenanted with all the house of Israel—
2 That he has spoken unto the Jews, by the mouth of his
holy prophets, even from the beginning down, from
generation to generation, until the time comes that they shall
be restored to the true church and fold of God; when they
shall be gathered home to the lands of their inheritance, and
shall be established in all their lands of promise.
3 Behold, my beloved brethren, I speak unto you these
things that ye may rejoice, and lift up your heads forever,
because of the blessings which the Lord God shall bestow
upon your children.
4 For I know that ye have searched much, many of you, to
know of things to come; wherefore I know that ye know that
our flesh must waste away and die; nevertheless, in our
bodies we shall see God.
7. Importance of 2 Nephi 9
“One of the most
enlightening
discourses ever
delivered in regard to
the atonement is
found in the ninth
chapter of 2
Nephi….It should be
carefully read by
every person seeking
salvation”

8. Death, Resurrection and The
Atonement
2 Nephi 9
Death is part of the
plan
Need resurrection
Because of the
Fall
Fall came through
transgression
Man cut off
Atonement must
be infinite.
Otherwise Death
wins
6 For as death hath passed upon all men, to
fulfil the merciful plan of the great Creator,
there must needs be a power of resurrection,
and the resurrection must needs come unto
man by reason of the fall; and the fall came by
reason of transgression; and because man
became fallen they were cut off from the
presence of the Lord.
7 Wherefore, it must needs be an infinite
atonement—save it should be an infinite
atonement this corruption could not put on
incorruption. Wherefore, the first judgment
which came upon man must needs have
remained to an endless duration. And if so, this
flesh must have laid down to rot and to crumble
to its mother earth, to rise no more.
9. Wisdom, Mercy, Grace and
Goodness
In these two
versus of 2 Nephi
Chapter 9, four
(4)
characteristics of
God the Father
are discussed.
Through these 4
attributes we are
given the chance
for freedom and
are saved from
the adversary.
8 O the wisdom of God, his mercy
and grace! For behold, if the flesh
should rise no more our spirits must
become subject to that angel who fell
from before the presence of the
Eternal God, and became the devil, to
rise no more.
10 O how great the goodness of our
God, who prepareth a way for our
escape from the grasp of this awful
monster; yea, that monster, death and
hell, which I call the death of the body,
and also the death of the spirit.
10. The Atonement of Jesus Christ
The earth is in a fallen
condition
Physical death – We
have mortal bodies that
will die (2 Nephi 9:6)
Spiritual Death –
Because we are born
into a fallen world, we
are separated spiritually
from our Heavenly
As we become
accountable for our
own choices, our sins
make us unworthy to
live in our Heavenly
Fathers presence (2
Nephi 9:16, Mosiah

11. The Atonement of Jesus Christ
All who have ever lived
will be resurrected with
an immortal physical
body (2 Nephi 9:10-13,
Alma 11:42-43)
All will be brought back
into God’s presence for
Judgement (2 Nephi
9:14-15, Helaman 14:15-
17)
The Earth will be made
Celestial (D&C 88:18-20)
If we develop faith in
Jesus Christ, repent
and are baptized, we
are cleansed from our
sins and through the gift
of the Holy Ghost each
individual can be
sanctified to remain in
Heavenly Fathers
presence and become
as He is (2 Nephi 9:17-

“The most important doctrine I can declare, and
the most powerful testimony I can bear, is of
the atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“His atonement is the most transcendent event
that ever has or ever will occur from Creations
dawn through all the ages of a never-ending
eternity.
“It is the supreme act of goodness and grace
that only a god could perform. Through it, all of
the terms and conditions of the Fathers eternal
plan of salvation became operative.
“Through it are brought to pass the immortality
and eternal life of man”
13. The Way
A View of the
shore…
Jacob noted
that Christ will
be the one to
greet us, not
Peter, or
anyone else,
Jesus Christ.
As we come to
know our
savior more,
being greeted
by him at the
door of heaven
will mean more
to us
40 O, my beloved brethren, give ear to my
words. Remember the greatness of the Holy
One of Israel. Do not say that I have spoken
hard things against you; for if ye do, ye will
revile against the truth; for I have spoken the
words of your Maker. I know that the words of
truth are hard against all uncleanness; but the
righteous fear them not, for they love the truth
and are not shaken.
41 O then, my beloved brethren, come unto
the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his
paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is
narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before
him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One
of Israel; and he employeth no servant there;
and there is none other way save it be by the
gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord
God is his name.
14. 2 Nephi 9:52
Jacob offers
a very
simple map
to follow for
staying on
the straight
and narrow
path…..
“Behold, my beloved brethren,
1. remember the words of your God;
2. pray unto him continually by day,
and
3. give thanks unto his holy name by
night.
4. Let your hearts rejoice.”
15. The Choice is ours to make
“Therefore, cheer up your hearts, and
remember that ye are free to act for
yourselves—to choose the way of everlasting
death or the way of eternal life.” (2 Ne. 10:23)
Editor's Notes
Three chapters of Isaiah ( Isaiah 49-52). These chapters will be familiar to those who have been reading the assignments because Nephi quoted parts of them to his brothers already. Anytime we see repetition in the record, bearing in mind the difficulty of inscribing onto metal plates, we can be certain the message is very important.
“That story teaches a magnificent principle: with increased vision can come increased motivation. So it is with the Atonement. As our vision of the Atonement is enhanced, our motivation to embrace its full effects is proportionately increased…
“Every attempt to reflect upon the Atonement, to study it, to embrace it, to express appreciation for it, however small or feeble it may be, will kindle the fires of faith and work its miracle towards a more Christlike life. It is an inescapable consequence of so doing. We become like those things we habitually love and admire. And thus, as we study Christ’s life and live his teachings, we become more like him.” (Tad R. Callister, The Infinite Atonement, p. 16-17)
Without resurrection we become “devils”? Simply stated – if Christ did not rise from the grave, as he stated he would do, then he was not the promised Messiah. If Christ has not the power to save the body from death, then he surely has not the power to save the spirit from hell.
“The way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him.” For those listening to Jacob’s words, there were actually two adjectives used to describe the path: 1) narrow/strait, and 2) straightforward and easy to see. And so it is for us: We have the knowledge of the gospel; therefore, although the way is very strict, it is also very clear.
The choice is ours: either suffer pain, deaths and torment, or accept the Atonement, live a Christlike life, and receive joy. It's a straightforward choice.
