This document contains a summary of a sermon given on Trinity Sunday. It discusses the concept of the Holy Trinity based on passages from Genesis chapter 1. It notes that God created humanity collectively in God's image, both male and female, and that together we image God. It emphasizes that we all carry God's image, we need each other, and we are all connected. The wisdom of the Trinity teaches that we are our sibling's keeper and injustice against any affects all. The closing prayer asks God, who is three in one, to send the Holy Spirit to break down barriers between people and bring justice and peace.

1. A Prayer for the People of God
God, whose fingers sculpt
sun and moon and curl the baby's ear;
Spirit, brooding over chaos before
the naming of day;
Savior, sending us to earth's ends with
water and words: startle us with the grace,
love, and communion of your unity in diversity,
that we may live to the praise of your majestic name.
Amen.
11. In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. Now the earth
was formless and empty, darkness was
over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
GENESIS 1:1
In beginning, (he) God created the heavens
and the earth. The earth was formless and
shapeless and darkness covered the face
of the deep, while (she) the spirit of God
pulsed over the face of the waters.
12. There is an old Mary Daly quote that says,
âGod is not a Ken doll and a Barbie doll
scotch taped together.â So, even gluing
(masculine and feminine language)
together in our best human work, thatâs still
not enough to say what God is.
But at the very least, some of the plurality
of God is accounted for in masculine
and feminine language, not only here
in Genesis but throughout the Hebrew
Bible and some in the later testament.

13. Then God said, âLet us make
humankind in our image, in our likenessâŠ
So God created humankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
GENESIS 1:26, 27
God saw everything that he had made,
and indeed, it was very good.
GENESIS 1:31
14. âIt is not just alone or in isolation
that we are the image of God,
it is collectively and together
that we are the image of God.
There is no single people that
could adequately image the
image of GodâŠwhen we
get together collectively
we image God.â

15. Tells the story of a Latin American
preaching speaking to his church of
mostly migrant/day laborers about the
principle of keeping the sabbath; in
their context, the impact of the
passage was much different than in
an affluent, white, western contextâŠ

16. âHow many of you worked five days
last week? (a number of hands)
How many worked six days?
(almost no handsâŠ) What does
this tell us about our society that
prevents us from keeping Godâs
commandment, âSix days you
shall workâ?â

17. MLK JR.
âWe are caught in an inescapable
network of mutuality, tied in
a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly,
affects all indirectly.â

always been trying to tell us:
- We ALL carry Godâs image

27. Closing Prayer
Grant, O God who is three in One,
that your holy and life-giving Spirit
may so move every human heart,
that barriers which divide us may crumble,
and suspicions and hatreds cease;
that our divisions being healed,
we may live in justice and peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
