1. A Prayer for the People of God
God who eludes us, but is also a
companion on our way, you walk behind,
beside, beyond; you catch us unawares.
Break through the disillusionment and
despair clouding our vision, that,
with wide-eyed wonder, we may
find our way and journey on
as messengers of your good news.
Amen.
10. Now that same day two of them were
going to a village called Emmaus,
about seven miles from Jerusalem.
They were talking with each other
about everything that had happened.
As they talked and discussed these
things with each other, Jesus himself
came up and walked along with them;
but they were kept from recognizing
him.
LUKE 24:13-16
11. His resurrected life
looks utterly normal.
He’s not floating three
inches above the grass;
he’s not glowing with
ghostly energy; he’s not
distant or detached
or disinterested
in the world…

12. When he was at the table with them,
he took bread, gave thanks, broke it
and began to give it to them. Then
their eyes were opened and they
recognized him, and he disappeared
from their sight. They asked each
other,
“Were not our hearts burning within
us while he talked with us on the road
and opened the Scriptures to us?”
LUKE 24:30-32
13. They got up and returned at once
to Jerusalem. There they found the
Eleven and those with them,
assembled together and saying, “It is
true!
The Lord has risen and has appeared
to Simon.” Then the two told what
had happened on the way, and how
Jesus was recognized by them
when he broke the bread.
LUKE 24:33-35
15. 1. Present AND Elusive
- There one minute
- Gone the next
- “He’s not a tame lion…”
THE RESURRECTED ONE IS…
16. 1. Present AND Elusive
2. Direct AND Mysterious
- Reveals himself in the Scriptures
- Speaks in parables
- Walks through walls; appears,
then disappears…

3. Healed AND Wounded
- Alive, not dead
- Scarred, not perfect
- Identifies with those who
GO THROUGH death, who have
been lynched, killed by the state, etc.

18. RESURRECTION LIFE is preceded
by BROKENNESS & DEATH
BROKENNESS & DEATH lead to
new RESURRECTION LIFE
THE RESURRECTED ONE
SHOWS US…
19. - If this is what BROKENNESS & DEATH
looks like, what will RESURRECTION
LIFE look like on the other side?
(See: Revelation 21-22)
THE RESURRECTED ONE
RAISES QUESTIONS FOR US…
20. - If this is what BROKENNESS & DEATH
looks like, what will RESURRECTION
LIFE look like on the other side?
- In light of what RESURRECTION LIFE
may look like, what can/should we be
doing about BROKENNESS & DEATH?
(See: Matt 5-7; Gal 5; Rom 14-15, Jas 2, etc.)
