Local meeting place of Jewish community to
learn/debate the Law, worship and carry on
community activities
11. Capernaum
After Lord Jesus was rejected by His own people in
Nazareth, he made Capernaum as His base of
operations.
It was the main town in his home province of
Galilee, having a prominent synagogue and a
strong Roman military presence.

People were astonished at His teaching (22)
He taught them as one who had authority
Not as scribes

14. Scribes
Teachers of the Law
Highly respected teachers who studied and taught
the Jewish law
They were called scribes because they preserved
the sacred Scripture in writing.

Jewish teachers generally were exponents of the
tradition handed down to them
In contrast Jesus in a way that implied divine
authority
Note that even before the person was delivered
from the demon possession, he was recognized as
having authority.
Note that He was the Word incarnate!
