Women's witness to the resurrection
1. PRAYER
Living God, long ago, faithful women
proclaimed the good news
of Jesus' resurrection, and the
world was changed forever.
Teach us to keep faith with them,
that our witness may be as bold,
our love as deep,
and our faith as true.
Amen.
6. • What happened to Lazarus
and others when Jesus raised them
from the dead, or they came out
of their graves at the crucifixion
• Waking up from temporary sleep
or physical strain/exhaustion
• Floating as a ghost
• Appearing in a dream
• Atomization into the universe
WHAT RESURRECTION IS NOT
7. The future concrete act of God
raising the dead to live in the
age of a restored creation with
transformed bodies, in which all
injustice is made right, and God’s
kingdom of justice and peace is
fully established, without opposition;
all of which is inaugurated by the
surprising resurrection of Jesus
WHAT RESURRECTION IS
8. After the sabbath, as the first day of
the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene
and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
Suddenly there was a great earthquake; for
an angel of the Lord, descending
from heaven, came and rolled back
the stone and sat on it. His appearance was
like lightning, and his clothing
white as snow. For fear of him the guards
shook and became like dead men.
MATTHEW 28:1-4
9. But the angel said to the women,
‘Do not be afraid; I know that you
are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here; for he is risen as he said.
Come, see the place where he used
to lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
“He has been raised from
the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of
you to Galilee; there you will see him.” This
is my message for you.’
MATTHEW 28:5-7
10. As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus
said to them, ‘The Son of Man is going
to be betrayed into human hands, and
they will kill him, and
on the third day he will be raised.’ And
they were greatly distressed.
MATTHEW 17:22-23
11. Then he began to teach them
that the Son of Man must undergo
great suffering, and be rejected
by the elders, the chief priests,
and the scribes, and be killed,
and after three days rise again.
MARK 8:31
12. The Jewish leaders (asked him),
“What sign can you show us to prove
your authority…” Jesus answered them,
“Destroy this temple, and I will
raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It
has taken 46 years to build this temple,
and you are going to raise it
in three days?” But the temple he
had spoken of was his body.
JOHN 2:18-22
13. After he was raised from the dead,
his disciples recalled what he had said. Then
they believed the scripture and the words
that Jesus had spoken.
JOHN 2:18-22
14. ‘The Son of Man must undergo
great suffering, and be rejected
by the elders, chief priests,
and scribes, and be killed,
and on the third day be raised.’
LUKE 9:22
15. “Why do you look for the living among
the dead? He is not here;
he has risen! Remember how he
told you, while he was still with you
in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must
be delivered over to the hands
of sinners, be crucified and on
the third day be raised again.’”
Then they remembered his words.
LUKE 24:5b-8
16. But the angel said to the women,
‘Do not be afraid; I know that you
are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here; for he is risen as he said.
Come, see the place where he used
to lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
“He has been raised from
the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of
you to Galilee; there you will see him.” This
is my message for you.’
MATTHEW 28:5-7
17. So they left the tomb quickly with
fear and great joy, and ran to tell
his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met
them and said, ‘Good morning!’
And they came to him, took hold
of his feet, and worshipped him.
Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not
be afraid; go and tell my brothers
to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’
MATTHEW 28:8-10
19. We tell stories because
we need them. They help us
wrestle with, and find
meaning in what we
experience. We tell “the story
of Jesus” because
it is a story of
transformation,
and is the story of how God
is at work restoring all things,
at the personal, societal and
cosmic levels; at the
28. We live in a world of
microscopic and telescopic
wonder, and we need a story
big enough, and powerful
enough to match.
Resurrection is that story,
and it starts with Jesus.
29. I wish I could
describe Him to you
He’s indescribable
He’s incomprehensible
He’s invincible…
The heaven of heavens
cannot contain Him
Let alone a man explain Him
30. He always has been
And He always will be
He had no predecessor
And He’ll have no successor
There was
nobody before Him
And there’ll be
nobody after Him
You can’t impeach Him
And He’s not going to resign
That’s my King
31. That’s my King
And Thine is the Kingdom
and the power, and the glory
For ever
And ever
And ever
And when you get through
with all of the forevers
Then amen.
AMEN!
Amen.
32. CLOSING PRAYER
Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty,
and restore all things in glory through the victory
of Jesus Christ. We pray that, wherever your image
is still disfigured by poverty, sickness, selfishness,
war and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ
may appear in justice, love, and peace,
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
