Mrs. Aga's Journey from HR Head to Non-Executive Chairperson of Thermax

2. Mrs. Aga was the chairperson of Thermax, the Rs.3246
crores leading Indian player in energy and
environment Mgmt.
She was instrumental in turning around the company
and bringing it to its growth.
Mrs. Aga retired in 2004 and is a director on the Board
of Thermax
3. After graduating from St.Xavier’s college, Mrs.Aga did
her PGD at Tata inst. of Social Sciences (TISS).
She was awarded a full bright scholarship to study in
the US
4. She began her career in Thermax in 1985. She was in
charge of the company’s Human Resources from 1991-
996
She took over as executive chairperson in Feb 96 &
became non-exec Chairperson in 1998.
She has also served as Chair-person Of CII’s
(Confederation of Indian Industries.)
Anu is also a member of the common wealth
commission.
5. Anu is keenly involved in the causes of communal
harmony and human rights and also supports NGOs.
She is chairperson of Akanksha an NGO running
education and other projects for Under—priviledged
children in pune & mumbai.
She is founder of Innovation for Marico foundation to
promote cause of fueling innovation in business,
Social sectors in India
6. Since retiring, Mrs. Aga has chosen to focus on
education for under-priviledged.
In partnership with Pune municipal corporation &
Akanksha, Thermax foundation has adopted 2
Municipal schools in pune.
She is on the board of TEACH FOR INDIA
7. She was married to Rohinton Aga. Her husband
passed away in 1996.
The death of her husband in 1996, Heart-attack thrust
her into chair-person’s role of Thermax an engineering
company.
She suffered another deep loss, The death of her 25
year old son Krush.
8. At that time Thermax’s growth curve had dipped and
the share prices plummeted from Rs 400 to Rs. 36
An anonymous letter from a share holder accusing her
of letting him down, forced her to take stock of the
situation.
“ I realized I was not capable but was only pretending
to run the business,” She says.
9. Loosing no time she detached herself from day to day
operations & brought in a foreign consultant to re-
structure the company- The move that revived its
fortunes.
With the company firmly back on track, Aga felt the
need to focus on other interests.
10. In october , after 19 years with Thermax, Aga handed
over the charge to her daughter , Meher Pudumjee.
A staunch believer in succession planning Aga wanted
to guide her daughter while she could.
“ I don’t want her to take over when I die.” She said so.
Her confidence in Meher was not misplaced. She was
named one of India’s top 30 achievers in April 05 by
India today.
11. Aga has other passions. A soc ial worker by training.
She did her masters in Social work from (*TISS)
Aga spends time discussing projects with Akanksha.
In July, She has trained welfare workers for 10
municipal schools in pune.
12. I feel the real person of business is Human well-being.
Who claims she is hopeless with numbers but more
interested in Human-Capital recognizing it as the
most important stake holder in corporate set-up.
Since 2003, Thermax has put aside 1% of its annual
profits for the social sector.
