Comparison of the Zun Vessel (13 th to 12 th century BCE) with the Gui Vessel (10 th century BCE)

The Zun Vessel from 13 th В12 th century BC and Gui Vessel from 10 th century BC have many unique qualities that make them interesting and
functional art pieces. These bronzes both haveintricacies which distinguish each from the other, yet they have many similarities. These two bronzes
may indicate similarities in many areas such as cultural ideas and philosophy across these two cultures with the many similarities found within these art
pieces, as well as differences in other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Gui vessel isdefinitely less cluttered than the Zun vessel which uses every inch of space possible to cover the vessel in some ornamentation. The
reason for this may be due to many factors. Perhaps there was a technique the Zun culture used that the Gui culture never obtained. A close inspection
of the Gui bronze shows that there are many imperfections in the shape of the vessel which may either be due to time, or casting technique. The Gui
bronze does appear to have been cast from clay, as it takes up the same texture of clay on the surface and the warped pieces indicate clay castingНѕ
however, this may also be due to time. The Zun vessel, on the other hand, appears almost free of imperfections which may indicate the techniques used
were more advanced in the time of the Zun.
Perhaps the techniques used by the Zun culture were too costly and so the Gui culture adopted clay casting or whatever technique which was used to
create the Gui vessel. The culture of the Zun appears to be more fixated on spiritualism than the Zun. This can

Public Art : Chicago Is A Hub For A Booming Culture Of Art
Public art encapsulates a large part of Chicago's history, and engages many different people in varying ways. Recently, I was in the city observing
art and came across a woman who was seeing the same pieces I was. She proceeded to tell me she had just gotten off a plane, that morning, from
New York, keep in mind it was around noon when I saw her, and wanted to show her daughter the great pieces of public art inChicago. She
passionately relayed the rich historical context of a few works of art: her main point being that Chicago is a hub for a booming culture of art. She
noted that great artists from Europe, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Dubuffet, wanted to be a part of the modern art trends happening in Chicago in
the twentieth century. She went as far to say that "these [pieces of artwork] are unique in the world," meaning they are so well known and
respected that their popularity extends beyond the city of Chicago. It is curious to think about what makes a successful work of public art, and why
artists and observers alike are so intrigued with the art in Chicago. In my opinion, two works of Chicago's public art, Monument with Standing Beast
and Cloud Gate, serve as effective works of public art due to their complexity and appropriate placement in space, however Cloud Gate is more
effective because of its personal appeal to the audience.
In order for a work of public art to be considered effective, it must have an element of complexity, provoking the thought of the

Art Reflection
For project two I decided to attend the Norton Simon Museum. Some time ago I had seen a friend share several pictures through social media, it
consisted of a beautiful garden and distinct art work. After going back and forth in conversation she informed me it was a museum located in
Pasadena. At the time I never took the initiative to go despite how intrigued I was through simple pictures however, I moved from Pomona to
Pasadena and decided since we had the project coming up it was the perfect occasion to attend. My decision to attended was driven by curiosity of
what my city has to offer. In a school field trip, I had the opportunity to attend the Getty Center although it was so long ago that I cannot remember
much. I do not have any expectations since I really do not have anything to compare it with, however I do expect to hopefully be able to identify
genres of art and maybe even classify around what periods the art belongs to.
The piece of art work in front of me is very similar yet all the same distinct from what I have seen in class. It seems like an ethnic girl or women is
kneeling giving her back to the audience holding a bouquet of lilies in what looks like is a field. I decided to discuss this piece because I was drawn to
it. I saw several works of art that drew my attention, but none like this one. I like that in a sense I can related to the art work. The way the character
of this painting is dressed is very similar to the attire from my culture. As well as the

Heated Exchange Concert Report
At the California Center of the Arts I learned a lot about many artists and their many works of art. Throughout the Heated exchange exhibit of
Contemporary Encaustics, Jan Jaylo: All these answers that may never come out and Living with the muertos: A Dia de los Muertos Experience by
Daniel F. Martinez I learned many interesting facts that change the way I view art work.
In the first exhibit which was the Heated Exchange exhibit of contemporary encaustics I learned alot about two works of art. The first work of art that I
chose was Jane Allen Nodine, Viscid 7, 2012, Encaustic, oil pigment, and resin on panel. What I learned I about this artists work of art was that it was
a very well structured piece and of very good quality. The texture on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martinez I learned about the symbolic representation of many items that go into a DГa de los Muertos altar and about Ms. Chavez. One important item
that goes into an altar are marigolds. Marigolds are yellow– orange flowers, these flowers are also called cempasГєchitl. They symbolize death. The
significance of these flowers is that their strong fragrance helps lead the dead back to their altars. The pedals from the marigolds are spread out in
the floor of the altar to the door so that their spirit can find their way to the altar. Food and drinks are another important part of an altar. Food and
drink are important in an altar because they represent the person or persons who have passed away's favorite food and drinks when he/she was
alive. But the souls that visit the altar can't eat the food because they have no bodies instead it is said that they absorb the aroma and energy of the
food. After the holiday is over the food is distributed between their families and the food is tasteless because their essence is gone. Two more
important items in an altar are salt that represents the continuance of life and pan de muertos which is bread of the dead is a symbol of the

The Importance Of Media
Media has changed dramatically over the years, technology has been a major reason for the progression and its influence on society. The concept
of media is simple to get a message across to widespread of audiences by using print or communication. Over the last five decades technology has
improved rapidly for the better use. Before the internet we had different stages in receiving news. There was the telegraph, radio, newspapers,
television and now the internet. There are many reason why people need to be informed by media; it could be for entertainment, educational or
news worthy. Since information comes in many forms it may be difficult to separate facts from nonfactual news. Newspapers, television and radio
programs make stories available from across the globe so we are informed. This helps allow readers or viewers in Paris to access voices and videos
from United States, Tokyo, or Mexico. Books and magazines also offer a more in–depth look at a wide range of subjects. Gutenberg's invention of the
movable printing press, books were painstakingly handwritten and no two copies were exactly the same. The printing press made the mass production
of print media possible today. Not only was it much cheaper to produce written material, but the new technologies also made it easier for books to reach
a wide audience. It's hard to overstate the importance of Gutenberg's invention, which helped usher in massive cultural movements in our society today.

Should Graffiti Be Banned And Graffiti Artists Be Banned?
Should graffiti be banned and graffiti artists be prosecuted? This and a variety of related questions have been increasingly perplexing society as a
result of the popularization of graffiti, starting with dissemination of its works in New York City in the early 1980s (346). Since then, graffiti artists
have both been banned and cherished, deprived of their work and allowed in art galleries. Thus, another question has been raised: Should graffiti be
considered art or a form of communication with aesthetics on a background? This question is addressed in the essay, "Revolution in a Can," written by
Blake Gopnik and first published in the November 2011 edition of Foreign Policy (345). In the essay, Gopnik presents an argument that essentially
divides the world of graffiti in two spheres: Western and non–Western. In the former, graffiti has gone from being a means of speaking against
prevailing inequalities to "[saddling] with the oldest high–culture clichГ©s" associated with art (346). While in the latter, graffiti is used to
communicate ideas and to "[speak] truth to power" (346). Ultimately, what is at stake here is how do we accept and identify new forms of
self–expression which are vital to human development? While many can agree that the likelihood of a person running into graffiti in a Western art
gallery is greater than doing so in the non–Western world, the act of regionally dividing the purpose of art seems questionable to say the least. Thus,
even though Gopnik makes a

Analysis Of Beuys 's ' The Pursuit Of A Social Art '
Beuys' work revolved around an interaction with his audience in the pursuit of a social art. Beuys defined "social sculpture" as "how we mould and
shape the world in which we live." This is not too dissimilar from Lefebvre nations of social space. It is within this context which he makes his
famous claim, "everyone is an artist." Here he envisioned an art form, in which society could be regarded as one great work of art, (an interpretation of
the Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk) to which each person can contribute creatively. He viewed the art he made as being a "stimulant for the
transformation of the idea of sculpture. They should provoke thoughts about what sculpture can be and how the concept of sculpting can be extended to
the invisible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was during the 1960s that Beuys' theoretical thought about the social, cultural and political function of art manifested in to a physical work.
Perhaps one of his most seminal works, 7000 oaks, exemplified his belief that art could take on a form which was defined as both interdisciplinary
and participatory. Beuys placed a pile of stones in the town Kassel, Germany. From above one could see that this pile of stones created an arrow,
which pointed toward a single oak tree. He stated that the stones should not be moved unless an oak tree was planted in the new location of the stone,
over the course of several years 7,000 oak trees were then planted by people of the town. R
This notion of a social, participatory art form can also be seen in the writing of Nicolas Bourriaud, who wrote "why wouldn't the meaning of a work
have as much to do with the use one makes of it as with the artists intentions for it." With both social sculpture and architecture, as with physical
architecture, a dialogue exists between use and structure. To a certain degree structure determines use and yet use also effects structure. Use is both
constructive and destructive, it manipulates and transforms object to its needs. Contemplation – the way in which art would traditionally be
experienced, is neither constructive or

The First Amendment Speaks On The Freedoms Of Religion
Hannah Bing
Judy Hatcher
WRIT 3037
17 October 2016
Free Art The First Amendment speaks on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition; so important, they found their place in the US
Constitution. Even with these freedoms meaning so much to the majority of America, somehow today we still encounter differences in political and
religious views that seem to provoke people to act violently against a piece of art or even physically against the artist that created it such as in the
recent case of artist Illma Gore. Often the violent action of destroying a work of art is "more offensive" than the image itself. We should allow artists
free reign of subject matter as well as style and work together to prevent art desecration and violence through education of the arts. Censorship is the
result of the fear of art. When the fear of art turns into iconoclasm or, rejection of a valued belief system, that fear becomes lack of government
funding, desecration, and physical violence.
Visual artists fell through the gaps and did not receive federal support for their work until the creation of the NEA or National Endowment for the Arts
in 1965. This federal program had little funding but proved a growing interest in art and art viewing from the public. This demand for art creates a
demand for funds to support venues and museums so they can keep their doors open. A problem with the NEA is that they provide government
funding, which prevents them from being biased about

Artistic Self-Criticism In Anne Bradstreet's The Author To...
Artistic Self Criticism "I'm my own worst critic, so critics step your hate game up", is a lyric from NF's song Motivated (NF). NF is arguing that as
an artist, he is the strongest critic of his music. Author, Anne Bradstreet, is also a harsh critic of her work. In fact, Bradstreet writes a poem, "The
Author to Her Book", illustrating the process of artistic self–criticism. We can recognize that artists are often the harshest critics for their works,
however, used correctly, this continuous artistic self–criticism creates a beautiful work of art. Artistic self–criticism is a process, the steps of which are
illustrated in "The Author to Her Book". The first step in artistic self–criticism is creation. Before the criticism can begin their needs to be a work to
edit. The initial work can be a rough draft, sketch, outline or just a starting idea. This is not the work artists present to others, as Bradstreet illustrates
"Who after birth didst by my side remain" (2). Even though this work is not displayed for others, it still comes under heavy scrutiny, which leads to
the second phase. Next in the artistic process comes the criticism itself. Although every stage of a work requires contemplation, artists generally devout
a time solely for revision, which is the criticism phase. Serious artists understand that their first draft is not perfect, and are able to improve it. First,
they analyze for faults, and likely, because of these faults there will be a certain disappointment

Analysis Of El Buen Pastor By Luis Jimenez
Luis Jimenez's piece titled El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd) from the Winthrop Rockefeller Gallery represents the react against the seminal
post–war American movement. The works of art were chosen by a Contemporary and Modern collection created during the past century. The
commonality amongst the works of art that lead to them being displayed together was the abstract expressionism; all the paintings reacted against the
seminal post–war American movement. This piece was made in 1998 as a depiction of the murder of Esequiel of Redford, Texas while he tended
his goats. The piece's present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Lawrence Lithography Workshop in Saint Louis,
Missouri. The piece is water color and crayon on paper, and it can only be seen from one side by looking up because it is hanging on the wall. The
subject of the work of art by JimГ©nez is a young man tending his goats who was shot by assassins because they thought he was a drug smuggler.
This work of art was made in 1998 in Saint Louis, Missouri for Esequiel Hernandez. This painting was not a copy, it was originally made. The art was
made after similar works. The technique used was lithograph (water color) and crayon on paper. The painting was a pretty nice size, more on the
bigger side. Luis Jimenez is the artist of El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd). He is an American born in El Paso Texas in 1940 and died in 2006 in

Taking a Look at the Quercus Alba
The Quercus Alba or commonly known as the white oak tree is a hardwood tree that is found in many areas around North America. The wood from
this tree has been a very good building material and is used in projects from house building to small wood carpentry projects. Quercus Alba is a very
tall tree that extends outward at the top making a very large canopy. Unlike its common name the whiteoak does not have whit bark. Its natural region
extends from the eastern coast over the Appalachian Mountains and into the eastern part of Kansas. White oak trees can reach heights upward of
sixty five to eighty five feet and the tallest was one hundred and forty four feet. As the trees get taller their canopy extends out farther and many
branches at the bottom of the tree are run horizontally to the ground. The base of the tree grows to a large diameter which makes a great base for
the large tree. The tree is a very sturdy hardwood tree that makes great building material. Quercus Alba has a closed cell structure making it hard for
water to get in. It has a natural resistance to water and it will not rot. This great quality of the Quercus Alba makes it an ideal building material for
many large construction projects. Before ships were built out of metal early carpenters and ship craftsmen would build ships out of white oak. Many
large construction projects are built with white oak. Homes are commonly framed with white oak wood and the interior of some houses are done with
white oak.

My Personal Essay: Like An Oak Tree
Like an Oak tree.
An oak tree is my personal mascot because it has an amazing life cycle. It starts as a tiny acorn and grows to be a tall and mighty Oak whose trunk is
resistant to disease and harsh weather.
At the age of eight, I thought less of myself. I felt inferior since I only knew so much. All I ever worried about was how much bread my father brought
to our rented house before I slept. Eating was the order of the day, it was rather a goal I pledged to accomplish on a daily basis.
Besides eating, I was also passionate about animated movies ranging from Tom and Jerry to Shrek. There was always a message conveyed in each
movie I watched. My favorite was Chicken Little, a story of a chick who saved his town from alien invasion. Chicken Little had once thrown his town
into panic claiming that the sky was falling. Everyone in the city thought he was crazy as they assumed that he reacted to an acorn that fell on his head.
Chicken Little fought against public discouragement and finally did something he was not expected to do, Chicken Little saved his town. The courage
of the chick inspired me to act mature and I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, one thing I know for sure, is that I have learnt to face my fears at an early age. It is my dream to grow and aim for the star, to be
holistically tall and morally strong. I dream to live long enough to render service to the community. Just as the Oak tree can produce as many as 10
million acorns over its life span, I long to impact as many as 10 million lives, to make a lasting difference, to give a hope for the welfare of the
generations to come. I dream to be a shelter for the homeless, a channel through which the hungry can feed. I also dream to touch the fly through the
skies and safely transport millions of passengers throughout my lifetime. Look out, oak seedling coming through, he yearns to be the greatest tree yet,
he wants to be an Oak

Visiting Phantom Bodies
Art 1010 – Art Appreciation
Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most thrilling experiences I have experienced in the
recent past. The exhibition provided me with an excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I
treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center. Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art
that take a provocative approach in addressing themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an
animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on

Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of color and texture, which serves to demonstrate
emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to remind the audience that death is inevitable and
that we all have to face it as some point in our lives. Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the
numerous repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012).
I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I
find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty, which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance,
and symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different
colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the

The Oak Tree Creative Writing
Throwing open the screen door, he steps outside with exhilaration brewing in his body. As the screen door closes with a slam, he inhales the sweet
scent of the countryside grass and scans the backyard. It is littered with trees; amongst the ocean of green grass, he sees the biggest tree standing in the
middle: the old oak tree. Standing prouder than all the others, its vibrant green leaves touch the blue sky. Looking under the oak tree, he sees what he
has been looking for. Hanging from the thick oak branches is a brown woven rope. The sturdy rope is tied around the object of his fascination: an old
piece of rubber.
He runs out toward it and within a second, he is facing it. The ancient rope, worn from weather, has small strings sticking out. Under the worn rope is
the black rubber, once a stark coal color, but from its present condition, it is clear that it has survived extreme weather. Decades earlier, the black
rubber had defined ridges, now the ridges are no longer so obvious and have been dulled down with time. The white letters that once bordered the
edge of the circle are peeling off, littering the ground like snowflakes. He brushes off the dirt and climbs inside the circle. As he climbs on, his feet

earth, the sun sends its rays through the branches. Delighted, he reaches up to grab one. Shifting his weight, he stretches out his hand. Now

I Saw Louisiana
I Saw Louisiana in a Live–Oak Growing Walt Whitman is considered one of the most important writers in the history of American Literature. The
people of his own time called him a radical, a madman, and a pornographer. These days he is greatly appreciated and entitled as a fearless prophet of a
new stage of human development. Sometimes Whitman would be in a slump and he felt that he needed to deflect the people who inquired too directly.
This even meant using examples of homosexual elements in his work, as well as unbelievable stories of him having affairs with numerous women and
fathering many children, unknown to him. Throughout these sorts of times W. Whitman has gone through both resentment and flattery, nevertheless

The look of the tree is compared to the old man by the use of personification. Although the man knew that the tree had to be much stronger because if
the man took the trees place he wouldnГt be able to stand alone. In lines seven and eight Whitman expresses some confusables as he has the man
break off a twig and twines some moss around the twig to keep the leaves from getting loose. He puts a lot more words into your head then you think
he is putting in. It looks like one sentence but in actuality it is the manГs whole life summed up. Throughout the manГs life he has picked a group of
friends and in one way or another wrapped those people around his world and cared for them as much as it seems he cares for this tree that he picked
out of no where. The man brings the twig home with him and places it in his room somewhere visible so that he can enjoy it. Then he says that it is
not there to remind him of his friends because that is all that he thinks of lately. The reason that he did this is to remind himself of his life and how he
chose these friends and continued to carry them along throughout his lifetime. Whitman uses many different techniques toward intriguing his readers
toward his work. A very quaint way is through homosexual aspects. In the tenth line of the poem W. Whitman says that the twig reminds the man of
manly love. When someone reads this the words manly love just sticks out at you and you

John Berger and History
In his first essay of Ways of Seeing, John Berger claims that all power, authority, and meaning that was once held by an original work of art has been
lost through the mass reproduction of these works that has occurred in recent years. He writes of an entirely bogus religiosity (116–117) that surrounds
these art objects and that the meaning of the original work no longer lies in what it uniquely says but in what it uniquely is (117). He claims that
because of reproduction, the art of the past no longer exists as it once did (127). Obviously, something created hundreds of years ago is not the same
as it once was, but the distribution of art and music to the general public has had a positive effect on society rather than a negative one.... Show more

how our perception is influenced). In using that word, he is referring to the social exploitation of the past: how the rich were painted, patronizing poor
artists (i.e. Hals), and in this fashion demonstrating the monopoly the wealth and upper class had on the arts. To support his argument, he writes that
reproduction is used all the time to promote the illusion that nothing has changed except that the masses, thanks to reproduction, can now begin to
appreciate art as the cultured minority once did. Understandably, the masses remain uninterested and skeptical (127). He claims that the masses don't
appreciate the art because it is not a part of their history. It seems that because of this, however, the art has not really lost any integrity anyway. The
only change is that now, anyone who wishes to access it is able to, but it still holds an esoteric quality that the cultural elite can enjoy. Berger shows
that the majority of the population does not attend museums. Does not this give them power that the rich can still enjoy, while making it possible for
the masses to experience as well if they want to? Reproduction has opened the lines of education of culture as well. Before reproduction, the rich were
the only ones who owned art, attended the opera, and the like, but it is probable that these people only attended these functions to show off their
wealth, without really knowing or caring about the

Visit The Leepa Rattner Museum
For my museum trip I chose to visit the Leepa–Rattner museum in Tarpon Springs. I have never been to an art museum before so I wasn't quite sure
what to expect. With that being said, I must admit I really found enjoyment from the distinctive emphasis that artists put within many of these images.
Furthermore, it is truly amazing how you can gaze at a work of art and begin to establish an idea of the narrative being told within the image. The
Leepa–Rattner museum is not very large, and it did not take very long to view everything that was on display. But to a great degree, I was fascinated
with the workmanship and focus of many of the paintings. The museum was very beautiful, and the architecture was very well done as well. The
building presents an image of a ship at sea. Additionally, I really valued the size of the museum, which is not huge, yet rather more personal and
relaxed. I found a few of the works strong and persuasive, and the more diminutive size keeps things in perspective.
The first painting that really drew my attention was the full sized image by Picasso called Guernica. The proportion and balance of the painting is
astounding. The scene portrayed in Guernica is a room filled with moving, shouting and anguished adults, and creatures. Also, I was told by someone at
the museum one of the more fascinating parts of the piece, and that is that it is done in monochrome. Generally, Picasso was known for his energetic
abstract and cubist works of art, so why did he

other every single day. For example a mouse can go up to an oak tree and take a fallen acorn, in a way the oak tree is helping the tiny mouse gather
food or, fatten up for the winter so the mouse can survive through the winter or the night. According to source #3 "A hawk swoops down looking for
a mouse meal. In a way, the oak tree help the hawk find it's food." Addition to that owls in the desert live up in cactuses so when it rains in the

The Flightless Goose Called Gilbert
гЂЉFlightless GooseгЂ‹, is a true story. The goose's name is Gilbert and he lives in a lake in Columbus, Ohio (Goodman & Goodman, 2008).
Because of some unfortunate circumstances, Gilbert can't fly south for the winter with other geese (Goodman & Goodman, 2008). Gilbert is one of the
gang, but he is a very young goose in his flock, and is his running, swimming and flying every day. One day, however, Gilbert was hit by a car, and as
a result of this accident, he left unable to fly (Goodman & Goodman, 2008).At first, his friends supported him, including his activities, but as time went

гЂЉBoots and His BrothersгЂ‹ was a very interesting multicultural children's Literature. Long time ago, there was a man who had three sons called
Peter, Paul, and Boots (Kimmel & Root, 1992). Their father was so poor; he did not even have any money for his three sons (Kimmel & Root, 1992).
Therefore, one day, he told his sons they must work hard in the world; they cannot at home to wait surprises (Kimmel & Root, 1992).
The country had a king, but there were lots of things bothered him, such as, it had an oak tree before his window (Kimmel & Root, 1992). The oak
tree was very high and very strong; almost all of the sunshine blocked the palace (Kimmel & Root, 1992). On the other hand, because the rock was
too hard, the king also did not have a well, therefore, he hoped to get a well. Every day, the king can only watch other countries use clean water

Putting Life To Work Analysis
The following visual analysis concerns Richard Ibghy and Marilou Lemmens exhibition Putting Life to Work, presented in partnership at the Owens
Art Gallery at Mount Allison University from 20 January to 12 March, 2017 and at the Galerie d'art Louise–et–Reuben–Cohen at l'UniversitГ© de
Moncton from 27 January to 26 March 2017. Curated by VГ©ronique Leblanc and organized by the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia
University. Putting Life to Work demonstrated the academic inquiry into the relationship between art and cognition.
Lemmens and Ibghy's art work evokes post modernism and conceptualism as it is defined by the 2004 Oxford Dictionary of Art as "various forms of

Analysis Of The Arrow And The Song
"The Arrow and the Song" is a relatively short, yet complex poem that takes some deep thinking to pull apart. The narrator shoots an arrow into the
air, yet cannot follow it, for it soared across the sky, far into the unknown. The narrator also lets a song be heard to the world, also unable to follow
this, because of course, you cannot see words with your eyes. After much time, he or she finds both unbroken, the arrow in an oak tree, and the song
within a heart of a friend. However, the meaning of the poem runs much deeper than a simplistic story of someone shooting an arrow and letting
loose a song, unable to find them until years later. The poem, upon being looked into, is actually a lesson that warns the reader to be wary of what
they say, for we are unable to know of where the things we say will end up, or their effect. The theme is heavily pushed by repetition, along with a
cleverly thought out use of words and symbolism, both fall into place nicely with the metaphors used. Once you dig into the poem on a search for
the true meaning, it becomes rather obvious and clear. As previously stated, the theme of "The Arrow and the Song" is a short tale cautioning us to
be careful of what we say and do, for all of our actions and words leave impacts on the world, impacts that we would have never expected, these effects
can last forever, and it is up to us to decide how we want our mark to be left on the world. In the poem, the arrow is used as a harsher action or word,

The J. Paul Getty Museum
For this essay, we were required to go to the Getty Villa in Malibu and look for specific works of art in the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa
is on a hill adjacent to Malibu beach and requires a reservation to get inside. They do not allow pedestrian entrances, so I had to take public
transportation and show proof of my Metro bus receipt to get in. Once inside, I took a shuttle up a curvy hill to the actual museum. When I got to the
actual entrance, I was taken aback by how beautiful not only the view was, but the Villa was as well. It did not take me long to find the five artworks.
The first work of art we were required to look at was a grave stele. There were a collection of them against a wall on the second floor of the Getty Villa.
The one that stuck out the most to me was titled Grave Stele of Herophanta and Posideos which was dated around 150 B.C. It is a Greek grave stele
that was made in Smyrna, which is what we today call Turkey. The stele was around 4 feet tall and made out of marble. The back of the stele was not
viewable, but the front had a lot of detail. On the front at the top displays what resembles a triangular pediment typically seen in Greek temples.
Underneath that are two wreath–like objects. In the center, there is a portrait that shows a family consisting of a husband and wife with two children.

What Makes Art Art?
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and you cannot even begin to describe the ways you
like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person's perspective.
Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and
see things through their eyes. Art is a way of expressing one's self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and
sculptures. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The scene has two snowmen at the entrance to the covered bridge. It fills your heart with warmth and holiday spirit just to look at it.
Portraits to me are art in a different sense. Some of my favorite portraits are by Martin Waugh. It is what he calls LiquidSculpture. He uses high speed
photography to capture drops of liquid as the splash into lakes and other bodies of water. To me there is just something so soothing about his work.
It is amazing how a tiny drop of liquid can create such a beautiful work of art. His work impresses me, because I never really thought of liquid as art
before I saw one of his photos.
The formal qualities of art work are somewhat important. I like paintings that flow smoothly with very fine brush strokes. I think some of the most
beautiful art work is produced with a combination of canvas and oil paints. I like portraits that capture images I normally could not see otherwise.
Portraits that capture the colors you can see when light reflects on a ripple of water amaze me. I do not know a great deal about art, but art seems to

Shovel As A Work Of Art
1. I disagree with the authors' definition for work of art. The author states that their thought on work of art has to be something made by a person.
Nature such as trees and insects are not works of art. I personally hold more of vague and open opinion on my definition for work of art. I feel like
nature and even the uncontrolled movements caused by non human are considered as art. My definition of work of art would be something that can be
seen or thought visually by human beings. I would include everyday objects including water bottles and cell phone with my own inspirations
applied like mixed media as work of art. I think it does not always have to human or an artist to be involved with the art work. The Fountain by Marcel
Duchamp used a urinal with a fictional name signed as a work of art. He changed the original urinal by signing differing from an original urinal.
Things do not have to be at a gallery or be complicated designed to be a work of art. The possibilities of art are endless
2. I would find the Shovel by Jim Dime as a work of art. The shovel was not made by Jim himself, but he altered the shovel to his own explanation.
Jim used shovel with other material to make mixed media art. He did not just put the exact same shovel that was mass produced by the factory as
work of his art. Shovel does fit the three criteria. Jim Dime made the finished product of Shovel by mixing other mediums including paints, wood, a
cord, and metal. Jim Dime made the Shovel with

The Museum of Contemporary Art currently has two exhibitions on view; one is called "Dirge: Reflections on [Life and] Death," and the other is
"Sara VanDerBeek." One work of art that stood out the most to me was Epitaph from 2011 by Pedro Reyes. Reyes works are often meant to
physically engage his viewers in order to shift their social and emotional expectations. The Epitaph invites his viewers to imagine a future in which
they no longer exist, and then create a short message that conveys the life that the viewer has led or hopes to lead. Reyes points out a benefit to this
type of therapy, which is that the patients who are participating in this work or art must embrace a certain degree of mortality. In today's world we are

This work of art is considered to be a performative installation, and it is created with materials such as paper, two steel typesets, two hammers, and
instructions. The two typesets are placed on a carpet on the ground where you create your own epitaph. The instructions for this work are: Take a
few minutes to compose the words for which you will be remembered and write a draft. Once you have completed your draft choose two cards for
your epitaph and place them on top of each other. Gently pick up the letters of the metal stamps and hammer your epitaph letter by letter. Once you
have completed your lettering, you may place your epitaph in the "cemetery." Keep the second copy for yourself. When viewing this work from left to
right the first thing I noticed was the description of the work of art I was viewing. Next to the description are the instructions, which are stacked and
labeled with the numbers 1–5. Then directly below the instructions is a table that holds the materials to complete an epitaph; these materials consist
of paper, pencils, and clips. Next, moving past the table to the right, there are seven rows of thin white wires, which are placed into the wall. Then
clipped onto the wires are epitaphs, which are spread out from left to right. Finally, below the epitaphs on a black carpet you have two steel typesets

To Kill A Mockingbird Oak Tree
"For reasons unfathomable to the most experienced prophets in Maycomb County, autuem turned into winter that year. We had two weeks of the
coldest weather since 1885, Atticus said," (63) This drawing was just a fun one. But it showed what the kids reactions were to the frozen snow on
the ground. "The tree was a single achient oak; two children could not reach around its trunk and touch hands....A small patch of earth beneaths its
branches was packed hard from many fights and furitive crap games," (225). I drew the tree becuase this tree was foreshadowing on what was
going to happen under that oak tree. It also has no leaves because at this time becuasr this is the time that the leaves are falling. "My costume was

La Belle Dame Sans Meri
This paper will be a study on La Belle Dame Sans Meri. This painting is an oil sketch for Waterhouse painting exhibit at the royal Academy in 1893
and now in the Hessisches Landes Museum, Darmstadt, Germany. John William Waterhouse was a man of very many talents. He was able to apply
a natural setting. His art work is one of a kind and beautiful. He applies a combina favorite artists. The piece of work that I will be discussing is La Belle
Dame Sans Merci.
John William Waterhousewas born in Italy, 1849 within the city of Rome. According to history on April sixth, Waterhouse was baptized. Though we
know many aspects of John William Waterhouse, we don't know his actual birthday. Waterhouse's parents were also artists, from which they came from
England. His parents helped John William Waterhouse become the amazing artist he was. During the time of Waterhouse's birth the Industrial
Revolution was happening. This led many other artists to act out against other artists who painted a more realistic style. They did this by painting in a
new, different way by painting pure lines. This style came out during the classical period. Waterhouse has a style that was unlike any other painter,
which made him completely unique (Artable, com, 2016). John William Waterhouse style of art work falls into a category called per–Raphaelite. He
gathered a lot of his style of art from Impressionists. Waterhouse gathered much of his inspiration from Arthurian legends and Greek

Giorgio De Chirico's Art
Giorgio De Chirico's art can be viewed one that evolved tremendously over time. However, his artwork portrayed a number of characteristics and
traits that differentiated them from the works of other artists in his time. This is probably why his art remains a puzzling factor to many from the
20th Century to date. A wide use themes and concepts can be seen in a number of his works. He has played a huge role in shaping the surrealist works
of art.
As mentioned, Giorgio De Chirico's art differed immensely from those of artists at the time. As a result of this difference, he appeared to be left out
and his work segregated especially by the French arts men and fellow surrealists. His art was characterized by symbolic objects. His manikins, for
example were spotted without upper body parts or faces. They appeared bizarre. Mostly, his paintings comprised of natural inspirations. Even if he
painted a building, the aspect of nature was seen in the outcome. Additionally, he used color so as to put emphasis of particular objects. He would use
contrasting colors in his mannequins and would place them in odd sizes and relationships so as to create juxtaposition. An example of this can be seen
in The Disquieting Muses, one of his works of art.
Enigma is one of his most widely used themes. It can be seen his use of ordinary life objects and figures. These figures have been used in a context
that does not appear ordinarily familiar. They all appear in a position or element that has been

Summary Of The Fairy Forest In A Tale Of A Short Story
The forest of Quedayla, is located next to the swamp. The swamp is where the terrifying monsters, by the fairies standards, are banished, where
they will never have peace, while being on high alert for the dangerous swamp creatures that lurk among them. One of the monsters in the swamp
is Fowley the witch, how is particularly more enraged at the fairy's than others, for banishing her to the dark depths of the swamp. So, she devised
a plan to turn their beautiful home into a place to fear, just like they did to her. After, weeks of work Fowley made a tar like substance, that would
turn all the plant matter in its path to dead remains. Under the cloak of night, she snuck to the outskirts of the fairy village, located at the heart of
Quedayla. Where she placed the tar like substance at the foot of an old oak tree and it started to decay. At a slower rate than Fowley was hopping,
but she had no time to fix it, because there are fairy guards patrolling the border of the fairy village, to ensure everyone in the village stayed safe.
The next day in the fairy village, in the afternoon Lily went to the training field for the fairies guards where she would find her friend Rosetta, after
her morning training. Lily cheerfully said, " Good afternoon Rosetta! How was was your training?" To a young fairy sitting on a wooden bench with
a sword in her hand. She replied with, "It was the same as always." in a dingy tone. "Rosetta, look on the bright side, after all this you will be

sometime they stand in front of these art for a while. There was an interesting scene when I worked at Gallery on the first day. There is a middle

Radley's Oak Tree Quotes In To Kill A Mockingbird
Finding gifts in the knothole of the Radley's oak tree has helped Jem and Scout come to age. A quote that demonstrates this is "'Don't eat things you
find, Scout.' 'This wasn't on the ground, it was in a tree.' Jem growled 'Well it was,' I said. 'It was sticking in that tree yonder, the one comin from
school.' 'Spit it out right now!'... 'Don't you know you're not supposed to even touch those trees over there? You'll get killed if you do!'"(Lee 37–38) In
this quote, Lee illustrates that Jem is afraid of anything that comes from the Radleys. When Scout told Jem that she took a piece of gum from the oak
tree on the Radley's property, he became furious. Jem started scolding Scout and told her if she even touched the tree she would die. In chapter 4, Jem
was frightened by anything the Radley's offered, but things took a turn in chapter 7. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Radley's oak tree. In chapter 4, he was afraid to even touch the tree. He made Scout spit out the gum she had gotten from the oak tree. In chapter 7,
Jem himself started to chew the gum found in the Radley's oak tree. The author states that he enjoyed it. This is a coming to age moment for Jem
because at first, he thought that anything lying around on the Radley's property was

The Magic of the Conservator: Ensuring Art Does Not Disappear
The Magic of the Conservator – Ensuring Art Does Not Disappear
As with many advances in industry and technology, we can thank war for increasing the interest in research for art conservation. After the Great War,
the British Museum unpacked its collections after wartime storage in the Underground railway tunnels. Many items had unexpectedly deteriorated in a
relatively short time; iron had rusted, bronze developed green corrosion, pottery and stone objects were covered in growth of salt crystals. The museum
then decided to set up a permanent scientific research laboratory to further its understanding of the causes of deterioration of materials and learning
methods of treating its effects. Conservation of art is now a full–time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since many works of art using non–archival materials have already noticeably changed as they age, conservators are establishing acceptable
intervention practices on contemporary work. Restoration is a standard practice in traditional techniques such as oil, tempura, marble, bronze and
wood. However, non–conventional materials have required conservators to investigate the artist's philosophy. If the artist used a specific material to
represent artistic expression, restoration of the material may not only change its physical appearance, but its conceptual intent. The American Institute
for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (A.I.C.) maintains a code of ethics and recently launched a WIKI for a collaborative knowledge base
that conservators can consult.
Eva Hesse is well known for having worked in notoriously archivally unstable materials. In the forty years since her untimely death, her sculptures
have chemically restructured themselves. The latex has turned opaque and the fiberglass has grown brittle; more than a dozen works have been
deemed "unexhibitable" by curators because her work was not about degradation. Hesse used latex in a way not intended by the manufacturer; casting

The Truth in Art: Vincent Van Gogh's Work of Art Essay
Throughout his argument against aesthetics, Heidegger strongly states he believes in the true "work of art" and believes that this aesthetic approach
goes against this. One artist that Heidegger particularly discusses is Vincent Van Gogh. He uses works of art by Van Gogh in order to give more
power to his argument. Through works of art such as Van Gogh's A Pair of Shoes, Heidegger makes his a distinction between artwork and things. In
order to truly analyze the culture of another, he explains how it is essential for the viewer to question what is being depicted in the work and what the
purpose may be. Heidegger describes art as a whole through the philosophies of existence and truth. To truly interpret Heidegger's critic ofaesthetics, ...

Through this quote, Heidegger is stating that influential works of art have a great role in instituting principles in a way that is beneficial to the
community around it as it guides their understanding and their beliefs of the world around them.
Because Heidegger does not agree with the creations of modern times, he does not agree with the term aesthetics. He mentions how Kant used the term
aesthetics in Critique of Judgment. Heidegger explains how the Greeks first generated the word. Aesthetics deals with the senses and does not deal
with the mind and knowledge. It is the opposite of what a truth would be. Heidegger explains how this is an issue as it is not a way to search for the
truth in something. Our minds, unlike our senses, search to understand and find truth.
As he continues his argument against aesthetics, Heidegger brings up Hegel's Vorlesungen fiber die Astheti. Art no longer counts for us as the highest
manner in which truth obtains existence for itself...in all these relationships art is and remains for us, on the side of its highest vocation, something
past" (78). He wants to believe that someday the distinctive truth manifest in art could return. Heidegger hopes that what has been lost in today's
society will return in a powerful way that could impact history once more. Although he agrees with most of what Hegel has said, Heidegger does
disagree with Hegel on a main aspect. Heidegger believes that a perfect work of art could come

Zun Vessel Analysis

  • 1. Zun Vessel Analysis Comparison of the Zun Vessel (13 th to 12 th century BCE) with the Gui Vessel (10 th century BCE) 1 Comparison of the Zun Vessel (13 th to 12 th century BCE) with the Gui Vessel (10 th century BCE) Solomon Klein University of Southern California The Zun Vessel from 13 th В12 th century BC and Gui Vessel from 10 th century BC have many unique qualities that make them interesting and functional art pieces. These bronzes both haveintricacies which distinguish each from the other, yet they have many similarities. These two bronzes may indicate similarities in many areas such as cultural ideas and philosophy across these two cultures with the many similarities found within these art pieces, as well as differences in other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Gui vessel isdefinitely less cluttered than the Zun vessel which uses every inch of space possible to cover the vessel in some ornamentation. The reason for this may be due to many factors. Perhaps there was a technique the Zun culture used that the Gui culture never obtained. A close inspection of the Gui bronze shows that there are many imperfections in the shape of the vessel which may either be due to time, or casting technique. The Gui bronze does appear to have been cast from clay, as it takes up the same texture of clay on the surface and the warped pieces indicate clay castingНѕ however, this may also be due to time. The Zun vessel, on the other hand, appears almost free of imperfections which may indicate the techniques used were more advanced in the time of the Zun. Perhaps the techniques used by the Zun culture were too costly and so the Gui culture adopted clay casting or whatever technique which was used to create the Gui vessel. The culture of the Zun appears to be more fixated on spiritualism than the Zun. This can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Public Art : Chicago Is A Hub For A Booming Culture Of Art Public art encapsulates a large part of Chicago's history, and engages many different people in varying ways. Recently, I was in the city observing art and came across a woman who was seeing the same pieces I was. She proceeded to tell me she had just gotten off a plane, that morning, from New York, keep in mind it was around noon when I saw her, and wanted to show her daughter the great pieces of public art inChicago. She passionately relayed the rich historical context of a few works of art: her main point being that Chicago is a hub for a booming culture of art. She noted that great artists from Europe, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Dubuffet, wanted to be a part of the modern art trends happening in Chicago in the twentieth century. She went as far to say that "these [pieces of artwork] are unique in the world," meaning they are so well known and respected that their popularity extends beyond the city of Chicago. It is curious to think about what makes a successful work of public art, and why artists and observers alike are so intrigued with the art in Chicago. In my opinion, two works of Chicago's public art, Monument with Standing Beast and Cloud Gate, serve as effective works of public art due to their complexity and appropriate placement in space, however Cloud Gate is more effective because of its personal appeal to the audience. In order for a work of public art to be considered effective, it must have an element of complexity, provoking the thought of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Art Reflection For project two I decided to attend the Norton Simon Museum. Some time ago I had seen a friend share several pictures through social media, it consisted of a beautiful garden and distinct art work. After going back and forth in conversation she informed me it was a museum located in Pasadena. At the time I never took the initiative to go despite how intrigued I was through simple pictures however, I moved from Pomona to Pasadena and decided since we had the project coming up it was the perfect occasion to attend. My decision to attended was driven by curiosity of what my city has to offer. In a school field trip, I had the opportunity to attend the Getty Center although it was so long ago that I cannot remember much. I do not have any expectations since I really do not have anything to compare it with, however I do expect to hopefully be able to identify genres of art and maybe even classify around what periods the art belongs to. The piece of art work in front of me is very similar yet all the same distinct from what I have seen in class. It seems like an ethnic girl or women is kneeling giving her back to the audience holding a bouquet of lilies in what looks like is a field. I decided to discuss this piece because I was drawn to it. I saw several works of art that drew my attention, but none like this one. I like that in a sense I can related to the art work. The way the character of this painting is dressed is very similar to the attire from my culture. As well as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Heated Exchange Concert Report At the California Center of the Arts I learned a lot about many artists and their many works of art. Throughout the Heated exchange exhibit of Contemporary Encaustics, Jan Jaylo: All these answers that may never come out and Living with the muertos: A Dia de los Muertos Experience by Daniel F. Martinez I learned many interesting facts that change the way I view art work. In the first exhibit which was the Heated Exchange exhibit of contemporary encaustics I learned alot about two works of art. The first work of art that I chose was Jane Allen Nodine, Viscid 7, 2012, Encaustic, oil pigment, and resin on panel. What I learned I about this artists work of art was that it was a very well structured piece and of very good quality. The texture on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martinez I learned about the symbolic representation of many items that go into a DГa de los Muertos altar and about Ms. Chavez. One important item that goes into an altar are marigolds. Marigolds are yellow– orange flowers, these flowers are also called cempasГєchitl. They symbolize death. The significance of these flowers is that their strong fragrance helps lead the dead back to their altars. The pedals from the marigolds are spread out in the floor of the altar to the door so that their spirit can find their way to the altar. Food and drinks are another important part of an altar. Food and drink are important in an altar because they represent the person or persons who have passed away's favorite food and drinks when he/she was alive. But the souls that visit the altar can't eat the food because they have no bodies instead it is said that they absorb the aroma and energy of the food. After the holiday is over the food is distributed between their families and the food is tasteless because their essence is gone. Two more important items in an altar are salt that represents the continuance of life and pan de muertos which is bread of the dead is a symbol of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Importance Of Media Media has changed dramatically over the years, technology has been a major reason for the progression and its influence on society. The concept of media is simple to get a message across to widespread of audiences by using print or communication. Over the last five decades technology has improved rapidly for the better use. Before the internet we had different stages in receiving news. There was the telegraph, radio, newspapers, television and now the internet. There are many reason why people need to be informed by media; it could be for entertainment, educational or news worthy. Since information comes in many forms it may be difficult to separate facts from nonfactual news. Newspapers, television and radio programs make stories available from across the globe so we are informed. This helps allow readers or viewers in Paris to access voices and videos from United States, Tokyo, or Mexico. Books and magazines also offer a more in–depth look at a wide range of subjects. Gutenberg's invention of the movable printing press, books were painstakingly handwritten and no two copies were exactly the same. The printing press made the mass production of print media possible today. Not only was it much cheaper to produce written material, but the new technologies also made it easier for books to reach a wide audience. It's hard to overstate the importance of Gutenberg's invention, which helped usher in massive cultural movements in our society today. The information that is being ... • 6. Should Graffiti Be Banned And Graffiti Artists Be Banned? Should graffiti be banned and graffiti artists be prosecuted? This and a variety of related questions have been increasingly perplexing society as a result of the popularization of graffiti, starting with dissemination of its works in New York City in the early 1980s (346). Since then, graffiti artists have both been banned and cherished, deprived of their work and allowed in art galleries. Thus, another question has been raised: Should graffiti be considered art or a form of communication with aesthetics on a background? This question is addressed in the essay, "Revolution in a Can," written by Blake Gopnik and first published in the November 2011 edition of Foreign Policy (345). In the essay, Gopnik presents an argument that essentially divides the world of graffiti in two spheres: Western and non–Western. In the former, graffiti has gone from being a means of speaking against prevailing inequalities to "[saddling] with the oldest high–culture clichГ©s" associated with art (346). While in the latter, graffiti is used to communicate ideas and to "[speak] truth to power" (346). Ultimately, what is at stake here is how do we accept and identify new forms of self–expression which are vital to human development? While many can agree that the likelihood of a person running into graffiti in a Western art gallery is greater than doing so in the non–Western world, the act of regionally dividing the purpose of art seems questionable to say the least. Thus, even though Gopnik makes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of Beuys 's ' The Pursuit Of A Social Art ' Beuys' work revolved around an interaction with his audience in the pursuit of a social art. Beuys defined "social sculpture" as "how we mould and shape the world in which we live." This is not too dissimilar from Lefebvre nations of social space. It is within this context which he makes his famous claim, "everyone is an artist." Here he envisioned an art form, in which society could be regarded as one great work of art, (an interpretation of the Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk) to which each person can contribute creatively. He viewed the art he made as being a "stimulant for the transformation of the idea of sculpture. They should provoke thoughts about what sculpture can be and how the concept of sculpting can be extended to the invisible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was during the 1960s that Beuys' theoretical thought about the social, cultural and political function of art manifested in to a physical work. Perhaps one of his most seminal works, 7000 oaks, exemplified his belief that art could take on a form which was defined as both interdisciplinary and participatory. Beuys placed a pile of stones in the town Kassel, Germany. From above one could see that this pile of stones created an arrow, which pointed toward a single oak tree. He stated that the stones should not be moved unless an oak tree was planted in the new location of the stone, over the course of several years 7,000 oak trees were then planted by people of the town. R This notion of a social, participatory art form can also be seen in the writing of Nicolas Bourriaud, who wrote "why wouldn't the meaning of a work have as much to do with the use one makes of it as with the artists intentions for it." With both social sculpture and architecture, as with physical architecture, a dialogue exists between use and structure. To a certain degree structure determines use and yet use also effects structure. Use is both constructive and destructive, it manipulates and transforms object to its needs. Contemplation – the way in which art would traditionally be experienced, is neither constructive or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The First Amendment Speaks On The Freedoms Of Religion Hannah Bing Judy Hatcher WRIT 3037 17 October 2016 Free Art The First Amendment speaks on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition; so important, they found their place in the US Constitution. Even with these freedoms meaning so much to the majority of America, somehow today we still encounter differences in political and religious views that seem to provoke people to act violently against a piece of art or even physically against the artist that created it such as in the recent case of artist Illma Gore. Often the violent action of destroying a work of art is "more offensive" than the image itself. We should allow artists free reign of subject matter as well as style and work together to prevent art desecration and violence through education of the arts. Censorship is the result of the fear of art. When the fear of art turns into iconoclasm or, rejection of a valued belief system, that fear becomes lack of government funding, desecration, and physical violence. Visual artists fell through the gaps and did not receive federal support for their work until the creation of the NEA or National Endowment for the Arts in 1965. This federal program had little funding but proved a growing interest in art and art viewing from the public. This demand for art creates a demand for funds to support venues and museums so they can keep their doors open. A problem with the NEA is that they provide government funding, which prevents them from being biased about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Artistic Self-Criticism In Anne Bradstreet's The Author To... Artistic Self Criticism "I'm my own worst critic, so critics step your hate game up", is a lyric from NF's song Motivated (NF). NF is arguing that as an artist, he is the strongest critic of his music. Author, Anne Bradstreet, is also a harsh critic of her work. In fact, Bradstreet writes a poem, "The Author to Her Book", illustrating the process of artistic self–criticism. We can recognize that artists are often the harshest critics for their works, however, used correctly, this continuous artistic self–criticism creates a beautiful work of art. Artistic self–criticism is a process, the steps of which are illustrated in "The Author to Her Book". The first step in artistic self–criticism is creation. Before the criticism can begin their needs to be a work to edit. The initial work can be a rough draft, sketch, outline or just a starting idea. This is not the work artists present to others, as Bradstreet illustrates "Who after birth didst by my side remain" (2). Even though this work is not displayed for others, it still comes under heavy scrutiny, which leads to the second phase. Next in the artistic process comes the criticism itself. Although every stage of a work requires contemplation, artists generally devout a time solely for revision, which is the criticism phase. Serious artists understand that their first draft is not perfect, and are able to improve it. First, they analyze for faults, and likely, because of these faults there will be a certain disappointment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of El Buen Pastor By Luis Jimenez Luis Jimenez's piece titled El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd) from the Winthrop Rockefeller Gallery represents the react against the seminal post–war American movement. The works of art were chosen by a Contemporary and Modern collection created during the past century. The commonality amongst the works of art that lead to them being displayed together was the abstract expressionism; all the paintings reacted against the seminal post–war American movement. This piece was made in 1998 as a depiction of the murder of Esequiel of Redford, Texas while he tended his goats. The piece's present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the Lawrence Lithography Workshop in Saint Louis, Missouri. The piece is water color and crayon on paper, and it can only be seen from one side by looking up because it is hanging on the wall. The subject of the work of art by JimГ©nez is a young man tending his goats who was shot by assassins because they thought he was a drug smuggler. This work of art was made in 1998 in Saint Louis, Missouri for Esequiel Hernandez. This painting was not a copy, it was originally made. The art was made after similar works. The technique used was lithograph (water color) and crayon on paper. The painting was a pretty nice size, more on the bigger side. Luis Jimenez is the artist of El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd). • 11. Taking a Look at the Quercus Alba The Quercus Alba or commonly known as the white oak tree is a hardwood tree that is found in many areas around North America. The wood from this tree has been a very good building material and is used in projects from house building to small wood carpentry projects. Quercus Alba is a very tall tree that extends outward at the top making a very large canopy. Unlike its common name the whiteoak does not have whit bark. Its natural region extends from the eastern coast over the Appalachian Mountains and into the eastern part of Kansas. White oak trees can reach heights upward of sixty five to eighty five feet and the tallest was one hundred and forty four feet. As the trees get taller their canopy extends out farther and many branches at the bottom of the tree are run horizontally to the ground. The base of the tree grows to a large diameter which makes a great base for the large tree. The tree is a very sturdy hardwood tree that makes great building material. Quercus Alba has a closed cell structure making it hard for water to get in. It has a natural resistance to water and it will not rot. This great quality of the Quercus Alba makes it an ideal building material for many large construction projects. Before ships were built out of metal early carpenters and ship craftsmen would build ships out of white oak. Many large construction projects are built with white oak. Homes are commonly framed with white oak wood and the interior of some houses are done with white oak. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. My Personal Essay: Like An Oak Tree Like an Oak tree. An oak tree is my personal mascot because it has an amazing life cycle. It starts as a tiny acorn and grows to be a tall and mighty Oak whose trunk is resistant to disease and harsh weather. At the age of eight, I thought less of myself. I felt inferior since I only knew so much. All I ever worried about was how much bread my father brought to our rented house before I slept. Eating was the order of the day, it was rather a goal I pledged to accomplish on a daily basis. Besides eating, I was also passionate about animated movies ranging from Tom and Jerry to Shrek. There was always a message conveyed in each movie I watched. My favorite was Chicken Little, a story of a chick who saved his town from alien invasion. Chicken Little had once thrown his town into panic claiming that the sky was falling. Everyone in the city thought he was crazy as they assumed that he reacted to an acorn that fell on his head. Chicken Little fought against public discouragement and finally did something he was not expected to do, Chicken Little saved his town. The courage of the chick inspired me to act mature and I ... Just as the Oak tree can produce as many as 10 million acorns over its life span, I long to impact as many as 10 million lives, to make a lasting difference, to give a hope for the welfare of the generations to come. I dream to be a shelter for the homeless, a channel through which the hungry can feed. I also dream to touch the fly through the skies and safely transport millions of passengers throughout my lifetime. • 13. Visiting Phantom Bodies Art 1010 – Art Appreciation Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center. Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives. Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012). I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty, which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The Oak Tree Creative Writing Throwing open the screen door, he steps outside with exhilaration brewing in his body. As the screen door closes with a slam, he inhales the sweet scent of the countryside grass and scans the backyard. It is littered with trees; amongst the ocean of green grass, he sees the biggest tree standing in the middle: the old oak tree. Standing prouder than all the others, its vibrant green leaves touch the blue sky. Looking under the oak tree, he sees what he has been looking for. Hanging from the thick oak branches is a brown woven rope. The sturdy rope is tied around the object of his fascination: an old piece of rubber. He runs out toward it and within a second, he is facing it. The ancient rope, worn from weather, has small strings sticking out. Under the worn rope is the black rubber, once a stark coal color, but from its present condition, it is clear that it has survived extreme weather. • 15. I Saw Louisiana I Saw Louisiana in a Live–Oak Growing Walt Whitman is considered one of the most important writers in the history of American Literature. The people of his own time called him a radical, a madman, and a pornographer. These days he is greatly appreciated and entitled as a fearless prophet of a new stage of human development. Sometimes Whitman would be in a slump and he felt that he needed to deflect the people who inquired too directly. This even meant using examples of homosexual elements in his work, as well as unbelievable stories of him having affairs with numerous women and fathering many children, unknown to him. Throughout these sorts of times W. Whitman has gone through both resentment and flattery, nevertheless showing us... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The look of the tree is compared to the old man by the use of personification. Although the man knew that the tree had to be much stronger because if the man took the trees place he wouldnГt be able to stand alone. In lines seven and eight Whitman expresses some confusables as he has the man break off a twig and twines some moss around the twig to keep the leaves from getting loose. He puts a lot more words into your head then you think he is putting in. It looks like one sentence but in actuality it is the manГs whole life summed up. Throughout the manГs life he has picked a group of friends and in one way or another wrapped those people around his world and cared for them as much as it seems he cares for this tree that he picked out of no where. The man brings the twig home with him and places it in his room somewhere visible so that he can enjoy it. Then he says that it is not there to remind him of his friends because that is all that he thinks of lately. The reason that he did this is to remind himself of his life and how he chose these friends and continued to carry them along throughout his lifetime. Whitman uses many different techniques toward intriguing his readers toward his work. A very quaint way is through homosexual aspects. In the tenth line of the poem W. Whitman says that the twig reminds the man of manly love. When someone reads this the words manly love just sticks out at you and you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. John Berger and History In his first essay of Ways of Seeing, John Berger claims that all power, authority, and meaning that was once held by an original work of art has been lost through the mass reproduction of these works that has occurred in recent years. He writes of an entirely bogus religiosity (116–117) that surrounds these art objects and that the meaning of the original work no longer lies in what it uniquely says but in what it uniquely is (117). He claims that because of reproduction, the art of the past no longer exists as it once did (127). Obviously, something created hundreds of years ago is not the same as it once was, but the distribution of art and music to the general public has had a positive effect on society rather than a negative one.... In using that word, he is referring to the social exploitation of the past: how the rich were painted, patronizing poor artists (i.e. Hals), and in this fashion demonstrating the monopoly the wealth and upper class had on the arts. To support his argument, he writes that reproduction is used all the time to promote the illusion that nothing has changed except that the masses, thanks to reproduction, can now begin to appreciate art as the cultured minority once did. Understandably, the masses remain uninterested and skeptical (127). He claims that the masses don't appreciate the art because it is not a part of their history. It seems that because of this, however, the art has not really lost any integrity anyway. The only change is that now, anyone who wishes to access it is able to, but it still holds an esoteric quality that the cultural elite can enjoy. Berger shows that the majority of the population does not attend museums. Does not this give them power that the rich can still enjoy, while making it possible for the masses to experience as well if they want to? Reproduction has opened the lines of education of culture as well. Before reproduction, the rich were the only ones who owned art, attended the opera, and the like, but it is probable that these people only attended these functions to show off their wealth, without really knowing or caring about the ... With that being said, I must admit I really found enjoyment from the distinctive emphasis that artists put within many of these images. Furthermore, it is truly amazing how you can gaze at a work of art and begin to establish an idea of the narrative being told within the image. The Leepa–Rattner museum is not very large, and it did not take very long to view everything that was on display. But to a great degree, I was fascinated with the workmanship and focus of many of the paintings. The museum was very beautiful, and the architecture was very well done as well. The building presents an image of a ship at sea. Additionally, I really valued the size of the museum, which is not huge, yet rather more personal and relaxed. I found a few of the works strong and persuasive, and the more diminutive size keeps things in perspective. The first painting that really drew my attention was the full sized image by Picasso called Guernica. The proportion and balance of the painting is astounding. The scene portrayed in Guernica is a room filled with moving, shouting and anguished adults, and creatures. Also, I was told by someone at the museum one of the more fascinating parts of the piece, and that is that it is done in monochrome. • 26. Analysis Of The Arrow And The Song "The Arrow and the Song" is a relatively short, yet complex poem that takes some deep thinking to pull apart. The narrator shoots an arrow into the air, yet cannot follow it, for it soared across the sky, far into the unknown. The narrator also lets a song be heard to the world, also unable to follow this, because of course, you cannot see words with your eyes. After much time, he or she finds both unbroken, the arrow in an oak tree, and the song within a heart of a friend. However, the meaning of the poem runs much deeper than a simplistic story of someone shooting an arrow and letting loose a song, unable to find them until years later. The poem, upon being looked into, is actually a lesson that warns the reader to be wary of what they say, for we are unable to know of where the things we say will end up, or their effect. The theme is heavily pushed by repetition, along with a cleverly thought out use of words and symbolism, both fall into place nicely with the metaphors used. Once you dig into the poem on a search for the true meaning, it becomes rather obvious and clear. As previously stated, the theme of "The Arrow and the Song" is a short tale cautioning us to be careful of what we say and do, for all of our actions and words leave impacts on the world, impacts that we would have never expected, these effects can last forever, and it is up to us to decide how we want our mark to be left on the world. Art lets you see the world through another person's perspective. Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. Nature such as trees and insects are not works of art. I personally hold more of vague and open opinion on my definition for work of art. I feel like nature and even the uncontrolled movements caused by non human are considered as art. My definition of work of art would be something that can be seen or thought visually by human beings. I would include everyday objects including water bottles and cell phone with my own inspirations applied like mixed media as work of art. I think it does not always have to human or an artist to be involved with the art work. The Fountain by Marcel Duchamp used a urinal with a fictional name signed as a work of art. He changed the original urinal by signing differing from an original urinal. Things do not have to be at a gallery or be complicated designed to be a work of art. However, his artwork portrayed a number of characteristics and traits that differentiated them from the works of other artists in his time. This is probably why his art remains a puzzling factor to many from the 20th Century to date. A wide use themes and concepts can be seen in a number of his works. He has played a huge role in shaping the surrealist works of art. As mentioned, Giorgio De Chirico's art differed immensely from those of artists at the time. As a result of this difference, he appeared to be left out and his work segregated especially by the French arts men and fellow surrealists. His art was characterized by symbolic objects. His manikins, for example were spotted without upper body parts or faces. They appeared bizarre. Mostly, his paintings comprised of natural inspirations. Even if he painted a building, the aspect of nature was seen in the outcome. Additionally, he used color so as to put emphasis of particular objects. He would use contrasting colors in his mannequins and would place them in odd sizes and relationships so as to create juxtaposition. An example of this can be seen in The Disquieting Muses, one of his works of art. Enigma is one of his most widely used themes. It can be seen his use of ordinary life objects and figures. But for 15, 20 minutes later, he was still seating on the back of Gallery. I felt weir and a lot of thought come to my mind; what does he do on back there? Doesn't he destroy the works of art? I started to walk around and asked him; is everything ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Radley's Oak Tree Quotes In To Kill A Mockingbird Finding gifts in the knothole of the Radley's oak tree has helped Jem and Scout come to age. A quote that demonstrates this is "'Don't eat things you find, Scout.' 'This wasn't on the ground, it was in a tree.' Jem growled 'Well it was,' I said. 'It was sticking in that tree yonder, the one comin from school.' 'Spit it out right now!'... 'Don't you know you're not supposed to even touch those trees over there? You'll get killed if you do!'"(Lee 37–38) In this quote, Lee illustrates that Jem is afraid of anything that comes from the Radleys. When Scout told Jem that she took a piece of gum from the oak tree on the Radley's property, he became furious. Jem started scolding Scout and told her if she even touched the tree she would die. In chapter 4, Jem was frightened by anything the Radley's offered, but things took a turn in chapter 7. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, on page 68 it states: "Less than two weeks later we found a whole package of chewing gum, which we enjoyed, the fact that everything on the Radley place was poison having slipped Jem's memory'" This piece of evidence highlights that Jem is now okay with taking things from the Radley's oak tree. In chapter 4, he was afraid to even touch the tree. He made Scout spit out the gum she had gotten from the oak tree. In chapter 7, Jem himself started to chew the gum found in the Radley's oak tree. The author states that he enjoyed it. This is a coming to age moment for Jem because at first, he thought that anything lying around on the Radley's property was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Magic of the Conservator: Ensuring Art Does Not Disappear The Magic of the Conservator – Ensuring Art Does Not Disappear As with many advances in industry and technology, we can thank war for increasing the interest in research for art conservation. After the Great War, the British Museum unpacked its collections after wartime storage in the Underground railway tunnels. Many items had unexpectedly deteriorated in a relatively short time; iron had rusted, bronze developed green corrosion, pottery and stone objects were covered in growth of salt crystals. The museum then decided to set up a permanent scientific research laboratory to further its understanding of the causes of deterioration of materials and learning methods of treating its effects. Conservation of art is now a full–time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since many works of art using non–archival materials have already noticeably changed as they age, conservators are establishing acceptable intervention practices on contemporary work. Restoration is a standard practice in traditional techniques such as oil, tempura, marble, bronze and wood. However, non–conventional materials have required conservators to investigate the artist's philosophy. If the artist used a specific material to represent artistic expression, restoration of the material may not only change its physical appearance, but its conceptual intent. The American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (A.I.C.) maintains a code of ethics and recently launched a WIKI for a collaborative knowledge base that conservators can consult. Eva Hesse is well known for having worked in notoriously archivally unstable materials. In the forty years since her untimely death, her sculptures have chemically restructured themselves. The latex has turned opaque and the fiberglass has grown brittle; more than a dozen works have been deemed "unexhibitable" by curators because her work was not about degradation. Hesse used latex in a way not intended by the manufacturer; casting it and brushing layer upon layer to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Truth in Art: Vincent Van Gogh's Work of Art Essay Throughout his argument against aesthetics, Heidegger strongly states he believes in the true "work of art" and believes that this aesthetic approach goes against this. One artist that Heidegger particularly discusses is Vincent Van Gogh. He uses works of art by Van Gogh in order to give more power to his argument. Through works of art such as Van Gogh's A Pair of Shoes, Heidegger makes his a distinction between artwork and things. In order to truly analyze the culture of another, he explains how it is essential for the viewer to question what is being depicted in the work and what the purpose may be. Heidegger describes art as a whole through the philosophies of existence and truth. To truly interpret Heidegger's critic ofaesthetics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this quote, Heidegger is stating that influential works of art have a great role in instituting principles in a way that is beneficial to the community around it as it guides their understanding and their beliefs of the world around them. Because Heidegger does not agree with the creations of modern times, he does not agree with the term aesthetics. He mentions how Kant used the term aesthetics in Critique of Judgment. Heidegger explains how the Greeks first generated the word. Aesthetics deals with the senses and does not deal with the mind and knowledge. It is the opposite of what a truth would be. Heidegger explains how this is an issue as it is not a way to search for the truth in something. Our minds, unlike our senses, search to understand and find truth. As he continues his argument against aesthetics, Heidegger brings up Hegel's Vorlesungen fiber die Astheti. Art no longer counts for us as the highest manner in which truth obtains existence for itself...in all these relationships art is and remains for us, on the side of its highest vocation, something past" (78). He wants to believe that someday the distinctive truth manifest in art could return. Heidegger hopes that what has been lost in today's society will return in a powerful way that could impact history once more. Although he agrees with most of what Hegel has said, Heidegger does disagree with Hegel on a main aspect. Heidegger believes that a perfect work of art could come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
