§ Bharuch is a formidable industrial base in sectors as diversified as chemicals & petrochemicals, textiles,
drugs & pharmaceuticals and ports & ship building
§ Several private business conglomerates have their presence in Bharuch. Some of them include
Guardian Corporation, Videocon, Badische Anilin - und Soda- Fabrik (BASF), Reliance, Tatas, Aditya
Birla Group, Welspun-Stahl Rohrren, Aventis, Wockhardt, Rallis, Pfizer, Larson & Toubro (L&T), Bayer,
Glenmark, Lupin and Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd
§ Excellent port connectivity with the presence of Dahej port makes it an investment destination in port &
ship building activities. Several key private players have developed their facilities in and around Dahej
port, including Indo-Gulf, Gujarat Chemical Port Terminal Company Limited (GCPTCL) and Petronet
LNG Ltd
§ Over 11,500 units of small and medium enterprises, involved in different sectors, such as chemicals and
petrochemicals, textiles etc. are present in the district
§ With over 70 medium and large scale industries, Ankleshwar is the major industrial center in Bharuch
witnessing a large number of business activities

Agriculture
§ Major horticulture crops being produced in the
district are banana, mango, cucurbits, papaya
and brinjal
§ In 2006-07, Bharuch had the highest production
of Banana accounting for 8,18,940 metric tonnes
(MT), followed by cucurbits with a production of
22,720 MT
§ Total production of cotton in Bharuch district was
257100 Bales (in 2006-07)

§ 52% of the State’s lignite is found in Bharuch
§ 92% of silica sand is being produced in the district
§ Besides lignite, the district is also known for its reserves of Fuller’s Earth, Agate, Limestone and

§ Over 11,990 small scale industries are present in Bharuch with an investment of INR 55,224 lakhs (USD
134.69 million), generating employment for over 27,900 persons
§ Chemicals, engineering and textiles are the three major Small Scale Industry sectors present in Bharuch

§ According to Industrial Entrepreneurial Memoranda (IEM) filed from 1988 to 2007, Bharuch witnessed an
investment of INR 90,286 Crore (USD 22,020.98 million), in sectors such as chemicals & petrochemicals,
drugs & pharmaceuticals, metallurgical, engineering and textiles, etc.
§ From 1988 to 1997, investments in the district amounted to INR 37,467 Crore (USD 9,138.29 million).
The major investments were in chemicals & petrochemicals, textiles and metallurgical industries.

§ Investment in the Chemical sector during 1998-07, was approximately INR 14,680 Crore (USD 3,580.48
million) as compared to last decade’s investment of INR 10,136 Crore (USD 2,472.19 million), generating
an employment of 25,371
§ Infrastructure development projects emerged as an important investment area in the recent years,
witnessing investments to the tune of INR 5,643 Crore (USD 1,376.34 million).

§ A total of 69 MoUs were signed, with an investment of
INR 101810 Crore (USD 24,831.71 million) during
Vibrant Gujarat : Global Investor’s Summits (VGGIS)
2003, 2005 and 2007, in sectors such as Chemicals,
Agro and Food, Oil & Gas and Textiles
§ 45 MoUs were signed with an investment of INR
77,904 Crore (USD 1,90,001 million), during VGGIS
2007, projecting employment opportunities for 3,18,031
persons
§ A total of 19 MoUs were signed for investments in the
chemicals & petrochemicals sectors during VGGIS

§ Sterling Biotech signed an MoU for INR 22,000 Crore

Economy Drivers
§ Emergence of PCPIR region, Dahej SEZ and passing of DMIC are expected to further fuel the industrial
and economic growth of the district
§ Centrally located within the industrial belt, Dahej is an ideal location in Asia to serve north, west and
central India and international destinations such as, Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America
§ Bharuch is the exclusive producer of Silica sand and presence of a large number of Lignite has made the
district a thriving industrial base for several industries
§ The district witnesses a large number of industrial estates and Special Economic Zones (SEZ).
Leveraging the existing industrial base, Bharuch attracts a large number of business conglomerates,
such as, Sanofi Aventis, Glenmark, Lupin, BASF, Bayer Crop Science and EI DuPont etc.

Power Supply Network
§ Bharuch has a well established power network with
nearby districts such as, Surat, Vadodara, Anand and
Ahmedabad.
§ A power station is present in Bharuch district connected to
Vadodara and Kakarapar in Surat.
§ 8 substations of 220 KV are in place in the district,
connected with all the major industrial belts of Gujarat.
§ 3 substations of 132 KV are existing in Bharuch,
Ankleshwar and Valia.
§ Several power projects are proposed at Dahej. One of the
major projects is a 2000 MW power station proposed by
Adani Power Ltd.

Water Supply
Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Irrigation Canal and Sardar Sarovar Project.

§ The anchorage is at a distance of 5 km from the old port and 6 km from a proposed container
terminal site in Jageshwar, Bharuch.
§ M/s. ABG Shipyard is developing Ship Building Yard at Jageshwar site
§ Many port based industries such as Birla copper, IPCL have developed their captive jetties at
Dahej port
§ M/s. GCPTCL has developed dedicated Chemical terminal at Dahej
§ The first LNG terminal of the country is developed at Dahej by M/s. Petronet LNG Ltd.

§ Spread over 5,000 hectares of land and with excellent access
to entire north west Indian hinterland, Dahej is strategically
located at a distance of around 400 km north of Mumbai
§ The port has cargo handling capacity of around 22 MMTPA.
More than INR 7,000 million (USD 171 million) has been
invested in its development
§ The presence of existing industrial estates such as Bharuch,
Ankleshwar and Panoli has enhanced the locational
attractiveness of the region
§ Commodities handled by the port for import include fertilizers,
rock phosphate, naphtha, ammonia, coal & coke, propylene,
ethylene, copper concentrate, methanol, Profane and coconut
oil, while the commodities for export include phosphoric acid
and soya beans
§ It is expected that the PCPIR (Petroleum and Petrochemicals
Investment Region), would further position Dahej as one of the
best investment destinations in the country.

Port project:
§ A solid cargo terminal has been proposed by Gujarat Adani Ports
Ltd. with an estimated cost of INR 500 Crore (USD 121.95 million)
§ The upcoming facilities in Dahej port includes ship building yards,
Special Economic Zones (SEZ) and PCPIR. The cargo handling
capacity is expected to go up to 48 MMTPA from the current
capacity of 22 MMTPA.
Road project:
§ With an estimated cost of INR 735 Crore (USD 179.26 million),
Government of Gujarat has proposed a 6 lane road project, linking
Bharuch to Vadodara
Rail Project:
§ To increase the accessibility of Dahej port, a rail project is
proposed connecting the port with Surat and Vadodara
§ Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been framed and project is
under implementation

§ Bharuch has a literacy rate of 74.79%
§ There are 850 primary, 118 secondary and 55 higher
secondary schools in the district
§ With 1,408 seats, the 17 ITIs offer several industrial training
programs in Cutting and Sewing, Fitting, Diesel engine
mechanic, Information Technology and electronic system
management.
§ K.J. Polytechnic College present in Bharuch has an intake
capacity of over 400 and offers diploma courses in
electronics, mechanical, computers, cosmetic design,
chemical civil and in electrical engineering.
§ Shri Sadvidya Mandal Institute of Technology and a
Government engineering college are present in the district
with intake capacities of 315 and 180 respectively
§ Narmada College of Management in Bharuch offers MBA

Some of them include Guardian Corporation, Videocon, Badische Anilin - und Soda- Fabrik (BASF), Reliance, Tatas, Aditya Birla Group, Welspun-Stahl Rohrren, Aventis, Wockhardt, Rallis, Pfizer, Larson & Toubro (L&T), Bayer, Glenmark, Lupin and Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd § Excellent port connectivity with the presence of Dahej port makes it an investment destination in port & ship building activities.   • 16. 16 Economy Drivers § Emergence of PCPIR region, Dahej SEZ and passing of DMIC are expected to further fuel the industrial and economic growth of the district § Centrally located within the industrial belt, Dahej is an ideal location in Asia to serve north, west and central India and international destinations such as, Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America § Bharuch is the exclusive producer of Silica sand and presence of a large number of Lignite has made the district a thriving industrial base for several industries § The district witnesses a large number of industrial estates and Special Economic Zones (SEZ).   • 27. 27 Power Supply Network § Bharuch has a well established power network with nearby districts such as, Surat, Vadodara, Anand and Ahmedabad. § A power station is present in Bharuch district connected to Vadodara and Kakarapar in Surat. § 8 substations of 220 KV are in place in the district, connected with all the major industrial belts of Gujarat. § 3 substations of 132 KV are existing in Bharuch, Ankleshwar and Valia. § Several power projects are proposed at Dahej. The cargo handling capacity is expected to go up to 48 MMTPA from the current capacity of 22 MMTPA.
