Billy The Kid Research Paper
Billy the Kid, the Mystery has been solved.
My topic is Billy the kid. He had blue eyes, he was small and skinny, and he had small girlish hands.
He was born in New York or Indiana; no one is positive on which one it is, in about 1859. In his
time, he had killed 9 people, that we know of, and now people speculate how many he actually
killed, some people think it was 21 people, one person for every year he was alive. Although Billy
the Kid is a solved mystery one suspect has been established including his different names,
including William Henry Bonney, Billy, and The Kid.
Who was Billy the Kid as a child? His name at birth was William Henry Bonney. He was born

Billy the Kid has never robbed a bank or a train. He was usually involved in rustling cattle and
murder. Billy lived in a different time period than us. Yes, murder was still wrong then, but it was
necessary for Billy the Kid to survive and thrive. (Andrews, Evan. "9 Things You May Not Know

A Short Story : A Story?
It's a hot day in Cheatham everyone has shorts t–shirts, anything to keep them cool. So of course
Big Bob (as everyone calls him) is showing off his muscles by wearing a muscle shirt. He is going
around his school making everyone get out of his way when he see the new kid named Billy.
"Hey pipsqueak," says Bob. "I heard you're the new kid."
" Um.... who are you?" Billy replied. " and yes I am, why does it matter?"
" 'cause you're going to listen to what I say and do what I do!"Bob yelled.
"Why is that?" Billy said. "I only listen to adults and the people in charge of me."
Bob punched Billy's locker as hard as he could and walked away, getting Billy in trouble with the
teacher.
"What was that loud noise!?" yelled the teacher
"It was Billy, Bob uttered. "He got mad at me for no reason and punched the locker."
"What?!" Billy said in confusion as the teacher cuts him off. "No i didn...."
"Go to the office now you brat!!" screamed the teacher.
As Billy is walking to the office he hears Bob and his friends laughing at the new kid getting in
trouble. Billy is not happy, he got in trouble for something he didn't do.When he gets to the office
the teacher doesn't even let him explain what happened, he just tells the principal what Bob told
him.
"This new boy named Billy was getting mad at Bob and punched a locker with a lot of force." said
the teacher.
"That's not what happened at all!" Billy tried to say, but they ignored him.

Billy the Kid      Billy the Kid is one of the most famous outlaws
in American history. He has been a widely told figure in American history as well as folklore. The
have made movies from his history and have also wrote many books on him. Most of Billy the Kids

and given the name William H. Bonney (There are other stories of his birth but this one is the most

Billy had ended up killing most of the group but was still looking for Sheriff Brady. On April 1,
1878 Billy got his wish. Billy and a group of five friends positioned themselves behind an adobe
wall and waited for Brady and his posse to come into town. When they finally did Billy and his band
of outlaws opened fire from their ambush and killed Brady and his posse. Even though Billy used
great strategy to gain the upper hand on Brady he was regarded as a coward for the ambush and lost
the support of the people who had supported him.      While the
Lincoln County War went on between Billy’s gang and the new sheriff George Peppin,
Lew Wallace the new governor had charged Billy with murder. When Billy heard of this he told
Wallace that he would turn states evidence on three killers if he received a full pardon. Wallace
agreed and met with Billy on March 17, 1879. When they finally met Wallace was
“shocked to see a slender boy with only a faint stubble of beard, who was the most
feared gunman in the West';. Even though he agreed to testify he didn’t want to
surrender so Wallace granted a fake arrest. Billy testified and with that it brought great fame. He
reveled in this fame and couldn’t get enough of it. After the trial Billy agreed to be put

William Henry Bonney : The Short Lived Journey Of A Boy...
William Henry Bonney: The Short Lived Journey of a Boy Without a Mother
In the tale of the famous American outlaw William Henry McCarty, Jr famously known as, Billy the
Kid, the west is portrayed erroneously as the land of freedom and rebellion by exemplifying actions
of William's exploits. However, in reality the west that Billy the Kid knew was a cutthroat and
barbarous land filled with outlaws and lonesome juveniles. Billy the Kid is a personification of the
American passion for western legends as he is regarded as both a cold blooded killer while being a
hero to those who he treasured most as an accomplice and a fellow friend. The truth behind William
McCarty's past might lead one to believe that society's view on our outlaw tale of Billy the Kid is
simply more corrupt than the truth reveals.
Our tale first begins southeast of New Mexico in the 1870s with the rugged frontier territory dotted
with a few small towns, cattle ranches and mining settlements. Although historians are not sure
where William Henry Bonney was born, they do believe that his family came out of the Midwest.
However, when William was a young boy at the age of fourteen his birth father died at the end of the
Civil War from an unknown cause. As time passed, William's mother grew lonesome and married
miner, William Antrim, who was never reality there as a father figure for Catherine two children.
Soon enough, Catherine and her new husband William Antrim moved to Silver City in New Mexico

Was Billy The Kid An Outlaw?
Billy the Kid was an outlaw. He had multiple names and there is not much known about his early
life and parents. He was born as William Henry McCarthy Jr. on November 23, 1859. Henry's
mother died of tuberculosis when he was only 15. However, raising a teenaged boy did not sound
like a good idea to his stepfather, so he went into a boarding home. The Kid had many run ins with
the law, but being a well–known outlaw started in Arizona when he killed someone in self–defense.
He then went on the run to New Mexico. Henry's first significant as an outlaw was escaping county
jail. He was arrested for supposedly being the lookout during a robbery for a boardinghouse mate.

The Death of Billy the Kid
In the period time from 1865– 1890, the Plain and Indian War. It started when the Americans wanted
to expand to the Great Plains. The only problem was that the Indians lived there. In addition, the
government decided to move them to reservations that were small and farming was not possible
because the land was dry. The Indians fought for their lands and some of those battles were the
Battle of the Little Bighorn, Wounded Knee, and the Sand Creek Massacre. Furthermore, after the
Indians lost, the government gave them the opportunity to become and live like white settlers. For
that, they will have to give up on their culture, traditions, and language. Furthermore, while the
Plain and Indian Wars was going on, in the Wild West Billy the Kid was becoming a legend. In
short, like every legend there had to be an end. In the article, The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid by
Garrett Pat, identify the incidents that ended the life of William Bonney and the significates of this
document in the United States. In the document published by Garrett, it describes the events that led
to the death of Billy the kid, an important legend during the Plain and Indian Wars. It illustrates the
history of the myth. In the document, it informs the reader that, "Billy the Kid was born in the slums
of New York City in 1859." Further, very few information about his background was given. It was

him more because he did his work, and teachers like students like that. Another bad trait that Billy is
that he is disrespectful to his teachers. Billy yells at his teachers, and says stuff like, ''I DON'T
WANT TO", or "NO" because they make him do things that he doesn't want to do, like to his work
or read for the class. Billy can change by listening to his teachers and do what they say. What will
happen if Billy changes is that he will be like by his teachers and he would be a nicer kid. Teachers
would react to his change by being able to depend on him to be doing things and not yelling at his
teachers. Billy likes to steal things from stores. He does it in a secretive way, he would wear a jacket
everyday so he could steal things and hide them in there. The change he can make is by buying the

Billy vs. Jane The Collective Works of Billy the Kid by Michael Ondaatje and Jane (a murder) by
Maggie Nelson, are two works of literature with a unique story line. Although the books are very
different, after comparing and contrasting the two, one is able to find similarities between the two
books. The Collective Works of Billy the Kid depicts the last year of the famous outlaw's life.
Michal Ondaatje tells the story using a series of pictures that move the reader to the final
confrontation of Billy's life. Jane (a murder) tells the story of the life and death of Maggie Nelson's

In the Collective Works of Billy the Kid Ondaatje uses pictures and historical facts which he then
combines with his own thoughts and puts into prose to tell of Billy the Kid. For example, "From the
head there'd be a trail of vertebrae like a row of pearl buttons off a rich coat down to the
pelvis....And a pair of handcuffs holding ridiculously the fine ankle bones". Describing what it
would have been like to be at Billy's funeral, Ondaatje takes historic accounts of his death and puts
it into prose form to describe the scene. In Jane (a murder) Maggie Nelson uses passages from her
aunt's diary in order to further explain what here aunt was like while she was still alive. To further
tell the story of her aunt she combines the journal entries with her own thoughts written in prose, to
tell the complete story. "I can become a very tragic figure in my own mind if I don't make an effort
to be gay. Treating things lightly is indeed the answer to so much" wrote Jane (107). The following

Billy The Kid Copland
Copland–Billy The Kid
Copland's Billy The Kid features several similarities to the excerpt we studied from Appalachian
Spring. The simplicity of the piece represents the easiest to see of these comparable aspects.
Appalachian Spring does not contain much complex polyphony, noticeably dissonant chords, or
atonality. Instead, Copland creates a simple, pastoral kind of music. Examples of this can be found
throughout the piece, but the section from 01:00–01:30 can be used as a representative sample. In
fact, Copland wanted this piece of Appalachian Spring to have a folksy air about it, and he achieves
it by the simplicity of his music.

Compared to him, billy looked like he atleast had a good foot on him, if not even more. Danny got

keeping a dead eye look at him. He then grabbed a handful, and then POP! Danny lay cold on the
cafeteria floor, with mash potatoes smear across his nose and mouth. He had been knocked out.
¨OOOOHHHH!¨ you heard from all the kids at lunch when the initial punch happened.
The lunch aids and gym teachers came rushing to the scene
¨What happened here,¨ asked one of the gym teachers.
"Billy punched danny in the face!" screamed one of the students from across the other side of the

"Come with me." the teachers and aides told billy.
They grabbed him by the arms and dragged him to the office. But man did he put up a fight, freeing

"You 're in a lot of trouble kid." said the aide.
If only billy actually knew how much.

A Short Story : The Story Of Billy Ray's Life
One day there was a hillbilly named Bubba Blue and he was on his way to his new vacation home.
In the car was his best friend Billy Ray. On their way to the house they stopped at a gas station to
get some gas and food. While at the gas station they saw a group of teens who looked like they were
in high school. The High school kids stared at them and started talking about the two hillbillies.
When they got what they needed, then went back to their car and loaded all the stuff into the truck.
Bubba Blue noticed that Billy Ray has been staring at one of the college kids and told him to go
over there and talk to her. Billy Ray refused and said that she wouldn't like him. Bubba Blue didn't
care so he went over there and told there and one of the other kids came out and told him to back
off. Bubba Blue got freaked out and went back to his truck and told Billy Ray what had happened.
Billy Ray was getting just as confused as Tucker was so they got in the truck and went on their way.
A little while later They arrived at Bubba Blue's house and it was a mess. The house looked like it
was put on fire and didn't fully burn down but they didn't care. They thought it was the best house

Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid...
The Perception of Violence in Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid
A question that arises in almost any medium of art, be it music, film or literature, is whether or not
the depiction of violence is merely gratuitous or whether it is a legitimate artistic expression. There
can be no doubt that Michael Ondaatje's long poem The Collected Works of Billy the Kid is a
violent work, but certain factors should be kept in mind before passing it off as an attempt to shock
and titillate; certainly, the poem does both of these, but they are not the primary purpose of the
work. For one thing, social context needs to be considered; Billy lived in the "Wild West", a time
associated with range wars, shoot–outs and great train ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If human beings are a part of nature, it can be assumed that they too have violent tendencies; in that
respect, violence is a natural and innate response. Though we pride ourselves on being able to
control these urges, they are always lurking somewhere beneath the surface of our most serene and
civilized moments.
In an odd, and somewhat disturbing way, Ondaatje also demonstrates that violence can be a source
of creativity. Billy is portrayed as an artist figure whose greatest moments of perception, clarity and
insight occur in the light of violence or violent associations. Michael Ondaatje challenges the reader
to look at violence in a new way. Though he does not advocate it, he is appreciative of its intensity
and artistic potential; as such, he includes violence in his own artistic vision.
From almost the very first page of The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, we are confronted with the
violence of the world which Billy inhabits. He tells us that, "These are the killed," (6) and proceeds
to list off those he has killed. He also tells of those who have been killed "(By them)" (6), including
his friends Charlie Bowdre and Tom O'Folliard, and finally at the end, Billy himself. Pages later, he
describes a graveyard filled with the victims of these ongoing clashes:
300 of the dead in Boot Hill died violently
200 by guns, over 50 by knives
some were pushed under trains–a

Comparing Fanfare For The Common Man And Billy The Kid
Aaron Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 14, 1900. Copland was one of the
most influential American Classical composers of the twentieth century. Although Copland was
trained in the Classical music of Europe, he started to focus his attention towards American music.
He felt that by infusing music like folk and jazz into his works that he could make classical music
popular in America. By doing so he was able to remove the European influence on American
Classical music.
I have chosen to compare performances of two of his most famous works, Fanfare for the Common
Man (youtube.com/watch?v=FLMVB0B1_Ts) and Billy the Kid (youtube.com/watch?
v=H_mdvy2M13Q). Fanfare for the Comman Man was written in 1942. The song was written for a
WWII tribute for the Cinncinatti Symphony Orchestra. Billy the Kid was a ballet commissioned by
Lincoln Kirsten. It premiered in 1938 in Chicago by the Ballet Caravan Company. Although the two
works may differ they both present the listener with a view of American life. ... Show more content

the two works both tend to return to a main musical theme. The both tend to use ornamentation in
there melodies. Copland tends to limit the range of the instruments in both pieces. I think he did that
to help portray a more wild west American image.
Billy the Kid begins in the key of Ab Major, which helps give it a happy and carefree mood. Fanfare
starts in the key of Bb Major giving the song a majestic and powerful feel. Both pieces form their
harmonies with chordal notes spread over many instruments. This once again helps achieve the

Synopsis of the Movie Young Guns
The scene that I will be discussing for this paper is called "He's a spy" from the movie Young Guns.
In this scene, Billy and his gang are confronted by Murphy's men. With the mise–en–scene, this
helps the viewer identify that the time period being portrayed here is the late 1870's or the early
1880's. The mise–en–scene being used for this movie is important in telling the story from a
different era as in today's world, no one dresses this way anymore. Also to include from this scene is
the lighting. I will attempt to give an explicit description of the use of the lighting and the sun and
how the cinematographer designed for the use of it. Furthermore, I will also discuss the people that
are directly involved with the making of Young Guns, the director, the production designer and the
art director and their roles and responsibilities.
In this scene, the mise–en–scene used is mostly natural. Using the background of the desert, the
brush gives the sense that the time of the year is cold outside. The brush is only that of the branches
with no vegetation, the time of year could be anywhere from October to March. Also in the
background is a river, which sits in a calm motionless manner, indicating that the wind is at rest.
Along with the natural surroundings as the mise–en–scene, other indicators of the time era are the
costumes that the actors are wearing, along with rifles and pistols as well as the horses that represent
the old west. The actor's costumes are what we see and

The 's Reflection Of The Ancient Women
Queering Vivien's poem entails finding the elements of imitation, anonymity, and/or appropriation.
Two of these elements, anonymity and imitation are clear in Vivien's reflection of the ancient
women on Lesbos in herself. Imitation provides Vivien with a means of growing in sexuality, a
gaining of knowledge of the women of Lesbos's ways. The ancient Lesbians work as a template, but
suddenly become the same as the lesbians of Vivien's time referred to as "our" (18). The result of
imitation is growing nearer toward the likeness of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's body
metaphorically becomes "a reflecting mirror," taking up all aspects of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien
and her lesbians go beyond queer imitation to a new form, the same form as the ancient Lesbians.
Vivien's group cannot be distinguished from the ancient Lesbians, since they all mirror one another.
Imitation renders Vivien's bodies queer and identical.
There is no singular body at any point only but "our" bodies. Anonymity then is also relevant to
Vivien's poem. One cannot differentiate between the present "our" bodies and ancient "their" bodies
either. No difference exists between them, as they are mirror images of each other. The bodies in the
poem are queer as they are both anonymous and imitated, yet simultaneously the bodies transcend
time. Bridging a long period of time (ancient Greece to 19th centure Britain) means Vivien does not
have a full picture of how these women of Lesbos lived. Imitating the past

Billy The Kid Analysis
The Death of Billy the Kid
In 1865– 1890, the Plain and Indian Wars, was the turning point for the Native Americans. It started
when the Americans wanted to expand to the Great Plains. The only problem was that the Native
Americans lived there, and the government decided to move them to reservations that were small
and farming was not possible because the land was dry. The Indians fought for their lands and some
of those battles were the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Wounded Knee, and the Sand Creek Massacre.
In addition, after the Indians lost, the government gave them the opportunity to become and live like
white settlers. For that, they had to give up on their culture, traditions, and language. Furthermore,
while the Plain and Indian Wars were going on, in the Wild West Billy the Kid was becoming a
legend. In short, like every legend there had to be an end. In the article, The Authentic Life of Billy
the Kid by Pat Garrett, identified the incidents that ended the life of William Bonney and the
significance about the life of Billy the Kid in the United States. In the document published by
Garrett, it describes the events that led to the death of Billy the Kid, an important legend during the
Plain and Indian Wars. It illustrates the history of the legend. In the document, it informs the reader
that Billy the Kid was born in the slums of New York City in 1859. Further, very few information

The Influence of Machines in Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid
Have you ever noticed the use of machines in the Western genre before? If so, wasn't it violent?
Whether it is not being able to capture essence in photographs, visually describing the use of guns,
or referencing to pencils in the text, poets are able to effectively communicate their ideas and central
messages to readers by incorporating all necessary elements. These aspects allow the reader to be
drawn in and view society from a different perspective. Michael Ondaatje's use of imagery in The
Collected Works of Billy the Kid explores and demonstrates how machines affect the way readers
view and interpret Western society. Firstly, pencils are used to ... Show more content on

Although cameras are machines used to capture a moment, Ondaatje argues that they do not
accurately portray a person's essence and their true self. To know someone's genuine character, one
must interact with them, rather than only viewing them through "ground glass or tripod" or the
stories told through another person's perspective. "Ground glass" represents camera's lenses, a filter
altering reality to fit the desired perception of a moment. Cameras are machines that influence
someone's perspective, rather than providing the true nature. Readers typically view Western society
as an unknown wild land with no laws, but is it really so? Ondaatje's use of cameras as a machine
questions this notion and shows that cameras and images are only a biased representation of
someone and how they want to be perceived. Furthermore, guns are used to heighten the effect of a
typical Western setting, yet they demonstrate a different and a deeper connection to the characters.
The text displays how the guns personally influence and affect Billy as well as the secondary
characters. In a barn scene, Billy acts erratically. Ondaatje explicitly uses a metaphor such as "filled
my gun and fired and fired... the smoke sucked out of the window as it emerged from my fist... for
the floating bullet" (14–15). This presents a comparison of Billy's fist to a smoking gun. Also,
Ondaatje's use of the word "fist" embodies violent imagery, which is efficiently used to

Billy The Bully
Billy the Bully Introduction Early on a Saturday morning I was hurrying down the street to buy a
scone for my big sister at our neighborhood bakery. It was her birthday and I wanted to do
something special for her (besides the gifts we had planned for her later in the day). It was a cloudy
spring day and rain was predicted, so I was moving pretty fast because I didn't have an umbrella. I
bought the ginger scone and on the way back home I looked across the street and saw a boy from
my class pushing another younger boy. It was Billy, who was big for his size, pushing another kid
and smacking him. I stopped for a moment to watch. How rude and unfair, I thought to myself. Billy
had always been a bit rude to me and I had seen him bullying people on the playground but he never
laid a hand on me. Just then Billy looked over and saw me watching him push the little kid around
and he yelled, "What are you looking at you little nerd?" That was all I needed to hear to get going
back to our house. Raindrops started falling about halfway home so I began to run. I looked back
and Billy had left the little boy and was on my side of the street and running behind me. I am not a
nerd but I am a good student and I am athletically active so I put it into another gear and left the
bully well behind. He isn't really too fat, but he is overweight and he can't run as fast as I can. Once
home, I put the scone in our bread box and went to my room to finish my math and science
homework. My

Analysis Of Billy The Kid : Problems With The Conspiracy
to Garrett, "That's him!" "Quickly as possible I drew my revolver and fired, threw my body aside,
and fired again" claimed Garrett.(p.3) The Kid was dead. Pat Garrett was with John Poe, Thomas
McKinney, and Pete Maxwell when he shot Billy the Kid.
Problems with the Conspiracy Although there are alternate theories or conspiracies on Billy the Kid,
the main theory accepted by conspirators is that 'Brushy Bill' is Billy the Kid. This conspiracy is
false, and is not the version I accept as the truth, for there are too many errors or holes in it.
A man named William H. Roberts claimed to be Billy the Kid about fifty years after Pat Garrett shot
Billy in Fort Sumner. "His nickname is 'Brushy Bill' and had the look, the size, and eyes and even,
according to those who knew the outlaw, the same laugh as Billy the Kid" (Jameson, 2007 p.1) Even
though they provide this coincidal evidence, Roberts could not be Billy the Kid because he rode a
stagecoach for Black Hills and throughout my research I could not find a place that states that Billy
the Kid ever rode a stagecoach or was every referred to as 'Brushy Bill.' Also, Billy the Kid was
right–handed, as is proven by the famous photograph of the outlaw, while Roberts was left–handed.
"The Kid spoke fluent spanish while Roberts did not." (p.2) Roberts niece also told researchers that
William H. Roberts was actually Oliver P. Roberts, whose life is documented and proven not to
align with that of Billy the Kid.
Another question to ask is this, why would the townspeople give Pat Garrett the reward money for
killing Billy the Kid if Garrett could not prove the dead man was Billy the Kid? Conspirators claim
that no one actually saw the body besides the four men, but according to Bell (1999) "We asked
permission to remove the body,' Jesus Silva said, 'Pete Maxwell suggesting removal to the old
carpenter shop. We laid the body on the carpenter's bench and placed lighted candles around the
corpse." This statement proves that Jesus Silva also saw the dead body of Billy the Kid. Later, Bell
claims that "And consequently a large number of Billy's friends were gathered at the wake.
Everyone's grief at the Kid's death was genuine and sincere." Billy the Kid was buried and a funeral

  • 7. William Henry Bonney : The Short Lived Journey Of A Boy... William Henry Bonney: The Short Lived Journey of a Boy Without a Mother In the tale of the famous American outlaw William Henry McCarty, Jr famously known as, Billy the Kid, the west is portrayed erroneously as the land of freedom and rebellion by exemplifying actions of William's exploits. However, in reality the west that Billy the Kid knew was a cutthroat and barbarous land filled with outlaws and lonesome juveniles. Billy the Kid is a personification of the American passion for western legends as he is regarded as both a cold blooded killer while being a hero to those who he treasured most as an accomplice and a fellow friend. The truth behind William McCarty's past might lead one to believe that society's view on our outlaw tale of Billy the Kid is simply more corrupt than the truth reveals. Our tale first begins southeast of New Mexico in the 1870s with the rugged frontier territory dotted with a few small towns, cattle ranches and mining settlements. Although historians are not sure where William Henry Bonney was born, they do believe that his family came out of the Midwest. However, when William was a young boy at the age of fourteen his birth father died at the end of the Civil War from an unknown cause. As time passed, William's mother grew lonesome and married miner, William Antrim, who was never reality there as a father figure for Catherine two children. Soon enough, Catherine and her new husband William Antrim moved to Silver City in New Mexico because of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Was Billy The Kid An Outlaw? Billy the Kid was an outlaw. He had multiple names and there is not much known about his early life and parents. He was born as William Henry McCarthy Jr. on November 23, 1859. Henry's mother died of tuberculosis when he was only 15. The Perception of Violence in Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid A question that arises in almost any medium of art, be it music, film or literature, is whether or not the depiction of violence is merely gratuitous or whether it is a legitimate artistic expression. There can be no doubt that Michael Ondaatje's long poem The Collected Works of Billy the Kid is a violent work, but certain factors should be kept in mind before passing it off as an attempt to shock and titillate; certainly, the poem does both of these, but they are not the primary purpose of the work. If human beings are a part of nature, it can be assumed that they too have violent tendencies; in that respect, violence is a natural and innate response. Though we pride ourselves on being able to control these urges, they are always lurking somewhere beneath the surface of our most serene and civilized moments. In an odd, and somewhat disturbing way, Ondaatje also demonstrates that violence can be a source of creativity. Billy is portrayed as an artist figure whose greatest moments of perception, clarity and insight occur in the light of violence or violent associations. Michael Ondaatje challenges the reader to look at violence in a new way. Though he does not advocate it, he is appreciative of its intensity and artistic potential; as such, he includes violence in his own artistic vision. From almost the very first page of The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, we are confronted with the violence of the world which Billy inhabits. Copland was one of the most influential American Classical composers of the twentieth century. Although Copland was trained in the Classical music of Europe, he started to focus his attention towards American music. He felt that by infusing music like folk and jazz into his works that he could make classical music popular in America. By doing so he was able to remove the European influence on American Classical music. • 31. Synopsis of the Movie Young Guns The scene that I will be discussing for this paper is called "He's a spy" from the movie Young Guns. In this scene, Billy and his gang are confronted by Murphy's men. With the mise–en–scene, this helps the viewer identify that the time period being portrayed here is the late 1870's or the early 1880's. The mise–en–scene being used for this movie is important in telling the story from a different era as in today's world, no one dresses this way anymore. Also to include from this scene is the lighting. I will attempt to give an explicit description of the use of the lighting and the sun and how the cinematographer designed for the use of it. Furthermore, I will also discuss the people that are directly involved with the making of Young Guns, the director, the production designer and the art director and their roles and responsibilities. In this scene, the mise–en–scene used is mostly natural. Using the background of the desert, the brush gives the sense that the time of the year is cold outside. • 32. The 's Reflection Of The Ancient Women Queering Vivien's poem entails finding the elements of imitation, anonymity, and/or appropriation. Two of these elements, anonymity and imitation are clear in Vivien's reflection of the ancient women on Lesbos in herself. Imitation provides Vivien with a means of growing in sexuality, a gaining of knowledge of the women of Lesbos's ways. The ancient Lesbians work as a template, but suddenly become the same as the lesbians of Vivien's time referred to as "our" (18). The result of imitation is growing nearer toward the likeness of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's body metaphorically becomes "a reflecting mirror," taking up all aspects of the ancient Lesbians. Vivien and her lesbians go beyond queer imitation to a new form, the same form as the ancient Lesbians. Vivien's group cannot be distinguished from the ancient Lesbians, since they all mirror one another. Imitation renders Vivien's bodies queer and identical. There is no singular body at any point only but "our" bodies. Anonymity then is also relevant to Vivien's poem. One cannot differentiate between the present "our" bodies and ancient "their" bodies either. No difference exists between them, as they are mirror images of each other. The bodies in the poem are queer as they are both anonymous and imitated, yet simultaneously the bodies transcend time. Bridging a long period of time (ancient Greece to 19th centure Britain) means Vivien does not have a full picture of how these women of Lesbos lived. Imitating the past ... • 38. Billy The Kid Essay The Influence of Machines in Michael Ondaatje's The Collected Works of Billy the Kid Have you ever noticed the use of machines in the Western genre before? If so, wasn't it violent? Whether it is not being able to capture essence in photographs, visually describing the use of guns, or referencing to pencils in the text, poets are able to effectively communicate their ideas and central messages to readers by incorporating all necessary elements. These aspects allow the reader to be drawn in and view society from a different perspective. Michael Ondaatje's use of imagery in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid explores and demonstrates how machines affect the way readers view and interpret Western society. Firstly, pencils are used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although cameras are machines used to capture a moment, Ondaatje argues that they do not accurately portray a person's essence and their true self. To know someone's genuine character, one must interact with them, rather than only viewing them through "ground glass or tripod" or the stories told through another person's perspective. "Ground glass" represents camera's lenses, a filter altering reality to fit the desired perception of a moment. Cameras are machines that influence someone's perspective, rather than providing the true nature. Readers typically view Western society as an unknown wild land with no laws, but is it really so? Ondaatje's use of cameras as a machine questions this notion and shows that cameras and images are only a biased representation of someone and how they want to be perceived. Furthermore, guns are used to heighten the effect of a typical Western setting, yet they demonstrate a different and a deeper connection to the characters. The text displays how the guns personally influence and affect Billy as well as the secondary characters. In a barn scene, Billy acts erratically. Ondaatje explicitly uses a metaphor such as "filled my gun and fired and fired... the smoke sucked out of the window as it emerged from my fist... for the floating bullet" (14–15). This presents a comparison of Billy's fist to a smoking gun. Also, Ondaatje's use of the word "fist" embodies violent imagery, which is efficiently used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Billy The Bully Billy the Bully Introduction Early on a Saturday morning I was hurrying down the street to buy a scone for my big sister at our neighborhood bakery. It was her birthday and I wanted to do something special for her (besides the gifts we had planned for her later in the day). It was a cloudy spring day and rain was predicted, so I was moving pretty fast because I didn't have an umbrella. I bought the ginger scone and on the way back home I looked across the street and saw a boy from my class pushing another younger boy. It was Billy, who was big for his size, pushing another kid and smacking him. I stopped for a moment to watch. How rude and unfair, I thought to myself. Billy had always been a bit rude to me and I had seen him bullying people on the playground but he never laid a hand on me. Just then Billy looked over and saw me watching him push the little kid around and he yelled, "What are you looking at you little nerd?" That was all I needed to hear to get going back to our house. Raindrops started falling about halfway home so I began to run. I looked back and Billy had left the little boy and was on my side of the street and running behind me. I am not a nerd but I am a good student and I am athletically active so I put it into another gear and left the bully well behind. He isn't really too fat, but he is overweight and he can't run as fast as I can. Once home, I put the scone in our bread box and went to my room to finish my math and science homework. My ... • 40. Analysis Of Billy The Kid : Problems With The Conspiracy to Garrett, "That's him!" "Quickly as possible I drew my revolver and fired, threw my body aside, and fired again" claimed Garrett.(p.3) The Kid was dead. Pat Garrett was with John Poe, Thomas McKinney, and Pete Maxwell when he shot Billy the Kid. Problems with the Conspiracy Although there are alternate theories or conspiracies on Billy the Kid, the main theory accepted by conspirators is that 'Brushy Bill' is Billy the Kid. This conspiracy is false, and is not the version I accept as the truth, for there are too many errors or holes in it. A man named William H. Roberts claimed to be Billy the Kid about fifty years after Pat Garrett shot Billy in Fort Sumner. "His nickname is 'Brushy Bill' and had the look, the size, and eyes and even, according to those who knew the outlaw, the same laugh as Billy the Kid" (Jameson, 2007 p.1) Even though they provide this coincidal evidence, Roberts could not be Billy the Kid because he rode a stagecoach for Black Hills and throughout my research I could not find a place that states that Billy the Kid ever rode a stagecoach or was every referred to as 'Brushy Bill.' Also, Billy the Kid was right–handed, as is proven by the famous photograph of the outlaw, while Roberts was left–handed. "The Kid spoke fluent spanish while Roberts did not." (p.2) Roberts niece also told researchers that William H. Roberts was actually Oliver P. Roberts, whose life is documented and proven not to align with that of Billy the Kid. Another question to ask is this, why would the townspeople give Pat Garrett the reward money for killing Billy the Kid if Garrett could not prove the dead man was Billy the Kid? Conspirators claim that no one actually saw the body besides the four men, but according to Bell (1999) "We asked permission to remove the body,' Jesus Silva said, 'Pete Maxwell suggesting removal to the old carpenter shop. We laid the body on the carpenter's bench and placed lighted candles around the corpse." This statement proves that Jesus Silva also saw the dead body of Billy the Kid. Later, Bell claims that "And consequently a large number of Billy's friends were gathered at the wake. Everyone's grief at the Kid's death was genuine and sincere." Billy the Kid was buried and a funeral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
