Task 1 – Multi-cameracase study
(Jimmy Fallon:Blew a chance to date Nicole Kidman)
Thisprogramme iscoveredlive. Usuallyshowslike thisare covered
by one producer. 4 cameras have beenused.Maincamerathat
coversthe sittingstage where jimmyFallonintroducesthe guest
that came to the chat show, itshowsinteractionbetweenthe host
and the guestand alsocoverstheirreactionsimultaneously.The
camera staysin the same place mostof the timesbutzoomsinand
out whenthe hostand the guestmovesoutof the shot. For
example:Camerazoomsoutandstarts to panto the direction
where JimmyFallonstoodupandwalkedoff tothe standingstage,
camera hadto capture the actionwhile keepingthe guestinthe
shottherefore camerahadan extreme zoomoutto keepthe host
and the guestinthe same shotwithoutcuttingtoanothercamera
because bothof theirreactionsneedtobe captured
simultaneously.Throughoutthe showthiscamerastayedinthe mid
shotcapturingboth the hostand the guestbut zoomedoutto the
wide shotandpannedwhenthe hoststoodup and walkedtothe
standingstage.
The secondcamera showsthe guestNicole Kidmaninamedium
close up,it cuts to thiscamerawhenNicole Kidmanismostlythe
one talkingor whenherreactionwantstobe coveredindividually.
The reasonwhy she isshownindividuallyisbecause she iscelebrity
guestand herreactionisveryimportantthat’swhyher reactionis
shownbyitself toemphasise herimportanceinthe chat show. The
thirdcamera showsJimmyFellonwhoisthe hostof the show ina
mediumclose up,thiscamerashottakesJimmyFellon’sreaction
and alsocuts to thisshotwhenhe is the mostlyspeaking. The
fourthcamera capturedmainvocalsreactionina wide shot.The
showmainlyfocusesonthe hostand the guest.
It isthe interviewtype of action, the way communicationwas
potrayedwaslike aconversation, the cameracutsbetweenthe hostandthe guestat most of the
timeswhichgivesthe meaningof the conversationbetweenthemtothe audience ,the maincamera
showsthemtogetherwhichshowsthattheyare talkingtoeach other, theyshow the eye contact
and alsothe bodylanguage whichshowsthe viewer the interactionbetweenthem. Itisan
entertainingsegmentwhere boththe hostandthe guestmake jokesandlaughwhichmakesthe
audience feelamusedandentertained.
The lookand the feel of the showislike a professional show ,there isatable and twocouchesfor
the guests, the backgroundshowsa layoutof NewYorkcityand alsoa wallpaperbehingthe layout

reaction.There were nopre-recordedclipsthathave beeninsertedinthe segmentbutyoucould
clearlysee the scriptedelementsasthe hosthad the pointto coverand talk about withthe guest.
For example:the primierof the movie Padingtonwherethe guestplaysanimportantrole of a
villain. The wayinwhichotwaseditedwasseentobe a rapid change betweenshotsshowinghost
and the guestto emphesise the accentonthe conversationwhichcreatedmore of awarmier
atmosphere thantypical interviewsonthe morningnews. The formatof thisshow isto entertainthe
audience whilealsoinformingthe aboutthe hottopics, itismainlya talkshow where JimmyFallon
talkswiththe invitedguestswhichisthe commonstructure thatcan be seenthroughoutthe
episode. Furtheremoreyoucansee the structure inintroductioninmostof the episodeswhere
JimmyFallonwalksinthroughthe thetre curtainstothe standup stage where he greetsthe
audience andcoversa couple of reletivebutnotsoimportant topicswhere thenhe proceedstohis
sittingdesk, where he will thentalkbrieflyandthengettointroduce the guestandgreetthemto
the studio.
There isa relativelylarge amountof peopleonthe setincludingthe host, artist, audience andother
staff , and the helthandsafetyissuesmayoccurtherefore there are rulesonthe setto make sure
that there are no wiresthatmeycause a hazard, people thatare in the studioare usuallychecked
before the entrance tothe broadcastingstationtherefore unacceptable behaviourthatmayoccur is
limitedincomparisontolive eventssuchasolympics.
In JimmyFallonshowwe cansee thatthere islimitedspace inthe studiobutthe wayin whichitwas
shotand produced, showsnoobvioussignsof the limitedenvironmentspace withingthe studio.
But alsoshowsthat the budgetisbig. There are mainfocal points, the deskandthe sofaswhere
hostand the guest/shave the talk, front standup stage where JimmyFallonopensthe show ,and
where the guestenterfrom, itisalsowhere the popup gamesare played, and where the actorsand
guestsperform. There isaudience space wherethe live audiencesreactionisshot,a little setupfor
the live inshowmusicianband, and the backstage are where guestshangoutwhile waitingto
comeoutto the show. The are twocameras that stayin place thathave a stage and the sittingarea
capturedat all times, andtwo otheroperatingcamerasthatmove around the studio.Thisisdone in
orderto not loose valuable camerashotsliveandalsonotto create a healthhazardwhile moving4
camerasat the same time.

a chance to fullyunderstandthe actionthatiscoveredin
the eventandas it ismostlyrepetetive the commentators
supportthe broadcast. Because camerasfollow the
participants, viewersfeel asif theyare presentonthe locationwhichmakesthemmore cheerful for
the event. There are scriptedelementsthathave beenmade toshow the resultsatthe endof the
marathonand that isplacedon topof the shot, whichis breathbutgivesan additional information
to the viewers.
The lookof the programme segnifiesthe scale of the evenandthe feel of the programme is
