people with disabilities, and help the deserving with basic needs and medical relief.

The Foundation works to:
Promote education to underprivileged children, with special
emphasis on special or differently-abled children
Education is the way towards dignity and self-reliance. It plays an even more vital
role in the lives of people with disabilities (PWD). Mindtree Foundation identifies
and supports individuals in pursuit of education.

vocational training to the deserving, including people with disabilities.

Supply medical aid to the deserving
Providing primary healthcare and medical aid for the underprivileged and people
with disabilities is one of Mindtree Foundation’s key areas of focus. We work with
NGOs to identify deserving individuals in need of medical assistance and provide
relief accordingly.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiatives
Mindtree’s CSR initiatives are primarily focused to benefit people with disabilities
(PWD), promote education, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities. We
are proud that our outreach programs impacted about 32,000 people in 2016-17

Assistive Technologies
People with disabilities (PWD) should be encouraged to participate on an equal
footing with the rest of us in society. To accomplish this, they need a great deal of
help, reassurance, support and faith—which are seldom available. Helping people
with disabilities and making this a better world for them is one of Mindtree
Foundation’s most important charters.
Mindtree, as an organization, is an equal opportunities employer. We have over
40 people with disabilities working and contributing to Mindtree’s success.
The Mindtree Foundation has devised several exclusive initiatives to help PWD
with education, medical aid and providing vocational training. As a technology
company, we also develop Assistive Technologies to help people with disabilities
in their activities of daily living (ADL). Accessibility and affordability are must-have
features of any assistive technology. We work with Mindtree Minds, academia,
NGOs, and AT product companies to build devices and software applications that
are easily available and affordable for people with disabilities.
7. 7
Assistive Technologies Ecosystem – ATTribute
Mindtree Foundation’s charter is to promote education to underprivileged children
with a special emphasis on people with disabilities (PWD). Technology plays a
very powerful role in this endeavor. Development and dissemination of affordable
and sustainable indigenous AT solutions can be a game-changer.
The Foundation is trying to build an ecosystem, ATTribute, to fulfill the wide-
ranging needs of people with disabilities. A portal developed by Mindtree will serve
as the core of this ecosystem. It will collect the needs of PWDs that have been
identified, assessed, and validated by various channels such as NGOs and special
schools. It then facilitates delivery of solutions for the pre-validated AT needs by
publishing them on the portal and tapping into our network of Mindtree Minds,
academia, external service providers and product companies.

developed in-house by Mindtree Minds.
KAVI-PTS aim to make communication easy for mentally challenged children as
well as children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and ADHD.
The application will be used in conjunction with ADITI-C for children with Cerebral
Palsy.
A prototype of the software is being tested with the Spastics Society of Tamil Nadu
(SPASTN) and the Chetana Foundation, Chennai.
KAVI-T
The KAVI-T is KAVI-PTS software installed and bundled with a tablet in a rugged
enclosure, making it easy for children to carry it.
The software makes communication easier for mentally retarded children and
children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and ADHD.

has been developed and demonstrated to children from the Spastics Society of
Tamil Nadu. The second version with enhancements is in development.
Assistive Technologies Planned for the Future
ADITI-W
This Analog-Digital Interface based on the Theremin principle and using Bluetooth
technology is a computer access switch which will help Cerebral Palsy-affected
children type on computers. It will generate left-click through Bluetooth technology.
The switch is in development and the first devices will be given to children at the
Vidyasagar School, Chennai.

The Kommunicator Audio Visual Interface using true-type font pictures (KAVI-F) is
also in development. It will help children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD and
mentally challenged children communicate with others.

WYLIWIS: What-You-Listen-Is-What-It-Sees
The WYLIWIS software is being planned for people with low vision and the visually -
impaired which will help them read text from printed books. The software, when
installed on an Android phone with camera, will read text in any language,
transliterate it into an audio file in the preferred Indian language and transmit it to
the reader through headphones.
The software will initially be developed for schools or hospitals for the visually
impaired.
WYTIWIS: What-You-Touch-Is-What-It-Sees
WYTIWIS is being planned to assist the visually-impaired. It will help them
recognize pictures from printed books by converting images into tactile images on
a touch pad.
This will be useful in schools and libraries for visually impaired people.

computer access switch for Cerebral Palsy-affected children that enables them to
type on computers with the help of an on-screen keyboard and hand waves or
gestures. It generates the left-click through the USB port.
The device has been built in association with IIT, Chennai and 200 units of ADITI -
C have been shipped to the Vidyasagar School in Chennai.
12. 12
Finger Switch
The finger switch is a tactile-based computer access switch for children affected
with Cerebral Palsy. It generates left-clicks through a switch attached to the user’s
finger, which in turn is connected to the computer through the USB port. The user
can type with the help of the on-screen keyboard.
Samples of the finger switch have been shipped to Chetana Foundation, Chennai.
Smiley Switch
The smiley ball switch is another variant of ADITI-C, and is specially designed for
children affected with Cerebral Palsy. The ball is embedded with a switch, which
provides computer access when squeezed. It generates left-click through the USB
port. Samples of the ball have been shipped to Chetana Foundation, Chennai.
