Why We Need An Urban County Government
Why We Need an Urban County Government
For too long this area has taken a back seat to the larger cities around us. We need to join the rest of
the progressive regions in this state and establish a new, more efficient form of government. Pulaski
County and the cities of Somerset, Science Hill, Ferguson, and Burnside need to merge together and
create an urban county government. This will help to consolidate duplicate services, provide better
representation for the citizens of Pulaski County, and strengthen the economy in this region.
We live in a magnificent part of the state of Kentucky. We have picturesque landscapes, really
pleasant residents, and a magnificent lake that supports a huge part of our economy through tourism.

As a result, it is possible for the citizens to vote to implement this type of government. Therefore, in
April of 2013 the Somerset–Pulaski County United group formed and began the process of having
feasibility studies done to see if the formation of an urban county government would be an
alternative that would serve our area well. According to the Commonwealth Journal, a newspaper in
Somerset, Kentucky, "A group of about 60 community leaders, clustered as Somerset–Pulaski
County United (SPCU), is embarking on a study to determine if a consolidated or united
government in Pulaski County would be more efficient and more responsive to the county's 63,000
residents." (Mardis and Shmidheiser). This group, a cross–section that well represents the residents
of this county, believes that the formation an urban county government is a great opportunity for all
our futures.
Unfortunately, the SPCU has faced much antagonism in this initial phase of work. Many current
government leaders are afraid of what changes might do to their positions of power. But these same
leaders are also the ones who create problems and allow current ones to continue. Having a council
of peers will give a voice everyone in the area, not just the few who reside in the

`` Heart Land And The Rural South Exodus `` By Patrick...
Imagine walking down main street in a small town, you notice that there are many unique store in
which you have never come across. After walking into countless stores you are starting to notice that
they all have one thing in common. What possibly could all these diverse stores have in common,
they all have a 12" by 10" sign with white lettering and red background saying Help Wanted. In "
Heart Land and the Rural South Exodus" by Patrick Carr and Maria Kefalas, your able get the
chance in knowing how much rural areas are in danger. In this paper I will argue that thriving small

We need to be aware that by people leaving the rural areas the shops we love the most may not be
there the next time we come back to that town. Comparing Buffalo's downtown to where it is now to
10 years ago, its looks completely different. Due to the small business being foreclosed, we are not
turning into very healthy downtown. But the stores that we still have we need to take advantage of
them because you never know how long they will be there for. Rural areas through the country are
facing the triple threat, the biggest defeat that can ever happen. Triple threat consist of three of the
biggest fears that any company, rural community would ever want to face. Carr and Kefalas
persuade small business owners, farmers and ranchers, and communities, that they aren 't the only
ones facing the fear. " No one would deny that finding work in today's countryside means facing a
triple threat: a failing farm and factory–based economy, rising unemployment, and shrinking wages
and benefit" ( Carr and Kefalas 21). As a citizen for rural area, I am noticing are town is slowly
getting hit by the triple threat. Generation farms are having to shut down, due to the low finical
income that is coming. Each day goes by, there is a increases of " Help Wanted" signs being put into
the windows of a small thriving business. Creating business to have to shut down earlier due to low
employment, not being able to work long hours. Which in the long run creates a finical burden, due

Sustainability For Sustainability : A Variety Of Academic...
Introduction As you know, nowadays, different definitions exist for sustainability in a variety of
academic fields and disciplines. What seems to characterize many of these definitions of
sustainability is the recognition that the future is important to consider. (Holmberg,1992). Perhaps
the most common and well–used definition comes from the Brundtland Commission, which defines
sustainability as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs". URL1 Increasingly, urban scholars, planners,
developers, investors are expected to address sustainability issues in building and urban design
projects. To achieve the aims of sustainability in urban scale, ... Show more content on

First, the demolition of cultural– heritage design and vernacular urban places and spaces is changing
rapidly. One of these changes is related to build environment that are impacted by globalization
negative characteristics and lost its harmony with the local features such as technology and culture
in time and space. The local potentials about social and functional aspects are largely ignored. On
the other hand, unique built environment are replaced by global forms and designs in inappropriate
method which are often not matched to local conditions. (King 2004). Using land uses in different
ways removes their original characteristics and vitality in new pattern. Secondly, it impacts place–
identity of urban environment by separating them from their continuity with local conditions and
representing them as a sample of new era. These consequences express sustainability of new forms
and processes of urban design in combination of two different ideas. "They question how place
identity is created, recreated and sustained" (Zetter, Watson, 2006)
Although the sustainability issue have a complicated factors but most of researches on urbanization
and urban design has framed it in the category of environmental agenda involved with some issues
such energy consumption, water and air pollution and transportation.

Starbucks is an American company who try to expend its business to other country around the
world. However, each country owned and has an identity, a history, and culture. This requires to
Starbucks to analyze the current market and adapt his offers according to the needs and mores

There are several barriers facing Starbucks to the "teaching" people to change their consumption
habits from tea and instant coffee. First of all, the major problem is that a cultural problem. In fact
tea is still the number one beverage in China because it is a part of China's national heritage. China

Besides, even if in the text it is written, "As if Chinese market were not enough, Starbucks is
finalizing a deal to enter India." I think that if Starbucks succeed with Chinese market they could
also enter the Indian market, with the same research realize for China.

There is response to this question in the text, but I can explain my thought. When we buy a coffee at
Starbucks we don't buy only a coffee but also a corporate images, a service, a way of thinking and
living. Starbucks create its own environment, brand value. It represents the premium coffee. There is
not only coffee, even if it is the Starbucks's specialty. Also, there is breakfast, drink, gift card, candy,
lunch, and all spin–off products (derivative product or tie–in merchandise). The atmospheres of the
place are a huge factor in the Starbucks experience. They want us to be the first and the most
luxurious coffee.
To respond to Americans and Europeans' increasing concern for the environment, Starbucks adopted
a green marketing. They contribute to protect the environment by using recycled cup and other
things. It's a way to play with the affective (emotional) component of the consumer.
This way of thinking is true in western countries, I do not know about this fact in Middle Eastern
and eastern countries.
In order to complete my answer, I also search on Internet the other values of Starbucks (Internal

Urbanization and growth go with each other: no country has ever reached a great economy without a
significant population shift into cities. According to United Nations databases, the proportion of the
2014 world population living in urban areas was 54 per cent, heading for 66 per cent by 2050.
Urbanization is necessary to keep up growth in developing countries, and it yields other benefits as
well. But it is not pain–less or always welcomed by policymakers or the general public. Managing
urbanization is an important part of nurturing growth; neglecting cities–even in countries in which
the level of urbanization is low–can impose heavy costs. Historically, urban infrastructures have
materialized as a response to emergent issues, natural disasters are just an example of them. In the
more distant past, construction has been a driven by localized issues such as sanitation, flooding or
fire. The reaction has been to engineer systems (under the powers of centralized, state–led planning
and public funding) that solve a single problem at a particular time. Little thought has been

Benefits Of Small Town Living
Growing up in a very little town in Illinois was a lot different than growing up in Houston, Texas.
When I was in the fourth grade I found many things to have changed about my surroundings, I
currently lived in a place where, the people thought and acted differently. I know now reading about
it and understanding more that some of those changes were for the good and some were not. Small
town living has its advantages such as, very close friendships, close approximately to may things,
and friendly people. Looking back, I also realized that there were a lot of disadvantages such as lack
of transportation, affects of a poor education, no opportunities for growth, crime, no diversity, and
low paying jobs and housing. Now that I am older, and aware of the affects of living in a small
town, I can see how these many things affected my life and will continue affect it in the future. I
grew up, the majority of my live, in a town in central Illinois, Kincaid, or better known as South
Fork because of the co–op with the schools around us in sports. This town is approximately 20 miles
southeast of Springfield, and is only seven miles west from the nearest town, with many
opportunities that my town did not offer (City–data).
With a total population of 1,495, including the town of Tovey about a mile away, as of July 1, 2015
Kincaid is ranked as number 587 of 1,367 as being a small town in Illinois (Kincaid, IL). Kincaid is
only about 0.62 square miles in land areas, and is located in

Gentrification and White Preference in the Rhode Island...
The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island
has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such
as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the
cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such
a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a
system are white–skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and
especially in the city of Providence, more and more educated Caucasians are leaving to seek a more
fertile economic environment.
"Gentrification is a general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, many cities that are rich in culture, diversity, and vitality are beacons for white people
interested in the "upcoming scene." This brings more and more whites who displace and marginalize
the original residents through increasing prices. Cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco
all have neighborhoods that originally had mostly poor, uneducated African Americans, and now are
swelling with young, educated whites that have greatly increased the price of living. In Boston,
Charlestown, Jamaica Plains, and Beacon Hill have all experienced intense characteristics of
gentrification from the 1970s up until the present, showcasing an increase in the population with at
least a bachelor's degree, as well as a large increase in new and renovated buildings. In New York,
the most famous example of gentrification is in Harlem, has undergone a process of gentrification
after becoming known as the national, and even international symbol for black culture with a
vibrancy that is not seen in the suburbs. Finally, in San Francisco, in the bay area, there has been a
massive influx of affluent companies that have completely devastated the middle class due to a high
rise in wealthy, educated, employees. These employees have taken residence up in the bay area,
causing the entirety of the already previously gentrified neighborhood to skyrocket to unobtainable
prices, even for the

The Complex Processes Of Urban Development
The complex processes of urbanisation overarches and entails a set of social, cultural, economic,
political, environmental and technological functions that result in sprawl and densities, proportional
to core size and settlement. Further implicating the extensive use of natural resources from fringes
and rural spheres within city limits to be consumed and then later in turn converted into waste.
Urban ecosystems are therefore, complex multifaceted systems that require a burdensome amount of
natural resources input and negotiations for their adequate development. In urban discourse, the lack
of interdisciplinary and trans–disciplinary interest partly due to an absence of tools to which all
disciplines can use to further incorporate ecological theories to assessment and planning of urban
centers. All these connections have been made and academics have divided the complex concept
into biophysical processes and socioeconomic processes when examining cities in case studies. The
urban ecology theory and a closely related concept of urban metabolism can explain the technical
aspects of urban density and growth but human influences are not accounted for in the assessment.
However, human scholarship is a key component that shapes the metabolic processes in urban
ecologies and in turn alters the initial footprint.
By examining the historical context of urban ecology, the early stages and latter results of the urban
ecology theory being transformed from a multidisciplinary concept into

The Internal Production Spaces Of Large Cities
This same logic leads not just towards generalized urban agglomeration but to the emergence of
multiple dense industrial districts within the metropolis. The internal production spaces of large
cities are composed of mosaics of particular kinds of industrial land use focused on localized nodal
clusters comprising activities that range from manufacturing to office and service functions. For
example, gun and jewellery manufacturing in Birmingham, England; footwear industry of East
London; clothing production of New York City; motor–vehicle industry of Tokyo; and office
functions in modern metropolis illustrate different aspects of the theory of industrial organization
and location. They represent especially clear cases of the internal specialization of parts of the
production space of the large metropolis. As such, they illustrate both, the generality of the problem
of agglomeration and the wide diversity of concrete forms that it can assume under different
conjectural circumstances.
The metropolis and the neighbourhood can be linked to the Chicago school of urban sociology,
which has developed ethnographic studies based on various ethnic neighbourhoods over several
decades. This kind of work focuses on interaction and its density within the city, generating an
ecological stereotype of the urban process depending on the conflict and competition between
various groups and their growth in terms of spatial and social movement. The city is an area of
dense mobility and

Dutch took advantage of this and used it for rice, fruit, tea, tobacco, and coffee plantations, which is
still in use today.
Being only 140km south east of Jakarta (Indonesia's capital city), Bandung attracts many weekend

The Fool Archetype
The Fool is the fifth card, based off of The Fool card in the major arcana of many other tarot decks.
Here, The Fool represents the conflict asexuals face when coming out, that they do not understand
their bodies, that they are confused, that they are foolish. Other LGBTQ people face these challeges
as well, but much people know much more about being lesbian, gay, or bisexual than they do about
being ace. Of course that is not to say other LGBTQ folks do not face these stigmas as much, the
oppression just operates slightly differently. The archetype of The Fool card from the AALR Tarot
deck reads, "There is a sense of fear in taking risk or being rejected" (Islam 2016), which can be

Asexual people do not exist to many in the world, and along with bisexuals, pansexuals,
polysexuals, nonbinary, intersex, and many other people, often receive no recognition or
acknowledgement. Asexuals have adopted dragons as a sort of mascot, as the representation of not
being real, not existing to people in the real world. It is not only lack of representation, but denial of
struggles, denial of personhood, and strict adherence to binary categories. People who do not exist
within well known labels, such as gay or straight, are persecuted, mistrusted, invalidated, and
oppressed, sometimes by members of other oppressed groups. When it comes to race, people of
color are already underrepresented in the media, and because asexuality is hardly present at all,
asexual people of color are especially rare to find. When asexual people are represented in the
media, they usually are not explicitly called asexual, or their lack of sexual attraction to others is
driven by emotionlessness, detachment, or apathy. The association with asexuality and mental health
disorders such as sociopathy fails to understand the key component of asexuality, which is asexuals
do not feel sexual attraction, and just that. Asexuals can be completely able to feel romantic
attraction, although some do not. No part of the definition of asexuality says asexuals must be
completely cold and heartless. People are able to be kind and compassionate without forming sexual
or romantic bonds with other people. The Dragon card wishes for more visibility of asexuality in the
media, and more understanding and acceptance in

Essay about Clancy of the Overflow
Clancy of the Overflow Analysis
Bush poetry gives people a unique and interesting prospective into the people who made this
country the way it is today and the history behind it. Clancy of the Overflow is a well known bush
poem by poet AB "Banjo" Paterson. Clancy of the overflow is about a person from the city who met
a drover/ shearer named Clancy. After meeting him he becomes jealous of Clancy's lifestyle which is
better than his city life. In this poem Banjo uses a variety of poetic devices to get his message across
like the use of suggestive language, descriptive language and imagery. Banjo uses suggestive
language to make the reader realise that country life is much better than city life where it ... Show

Banjo does this to persuade the reader in believing that the country lifestyle which is portrayed as
free, clean and laid back is better than the city lifestyle which is portrayed as dirty, hot and boring.
Banjo also makes the reader believe that the attractiveness of living off the land and idealizing the
country life as a drover making the quality of life in the country seems greater than in the city. Banjo
uses imagery and the first person point of view to help the reader imagine what it would be like to
be a drover. The person living in the city imagines what Clancy the drover is doing and feeling while
he is stuck in a hot office all day. "As the stock are slowly stringing, Clancy rides behind them
singing" and also "He sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended and at night the
wondrous glory of the everlasting stars." The city living character is conveying what Clancy the
drover is doing and how peaceful it would be if he could do the same. He also says "And I somehow
fancy that I'd like to change with Clancy." This suggests that the city living character is somewhat
jealous of Clancy, his job and his lifestyle. The city living character furthermore explains the city
life as "Of the tramways and the buses making hurry down the street, and the language uninviting of
the gutter children fighting". This suggests that the he doesn't like his life in the city and considers it
as busy and also

According to Bemis (1936) "A new conception of the structure of our modern houses is needed,
better adapted not only to the social conditions of our day but also to the modern means of

in the early twentieth century has a vested interest in using technology to advance new concepts in
the design of houses. Nevertheless he points to the important relationship of the use of technology in
the structural design of housing. However, it is difficult to estimate how far changes in technology

Urban Concepts
Man's primary need has always been housing as shelter from the elements. Originally mud huts
were built where hunters were able to find animals for food and then more permanent dwellings
were built, using local materials, as the economy changed to agriculture. Later as populations grew
so different environments emerged with significant change in the urban form and fabric of
settlements. Housing was determined not only by available materials but also the cost of getting
them to the place of construction. Different places had different availability of materials and labour
which shaped the design of housing. Each technology therefore had an impact and was a common
thread unifying changes in housing in Athens, Paris and Chicago. From this it can be seen that
innovative technology continues to advance and cause significant social change that is, 'certain
urban characteristics flow inevitably from new technologies' (Chant 1999).

Urban Expansion And Its Effect On Families
Report–––urban expansion
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Aims
Urban expansion and effects.
1.2 Parameters
Inequality, traffic problems, waste, housing, pollution and suicides.
1.3 Definition
Urbanisation is the increase proportion of people living in towns and cities. It is the outcome of
social, economic and political developments that lead to urban concentration and growth of large
cities, changes in land use and transformation from rural to metropolitan pattern of organization and
governance.
Urban expansion is part of urbanisation. It is defined as low–density residential and commercial
development on undeveloped land. (CEF, 2013)
1.4 Thesis
This report will address problems brought by rapid urban expansion, especially in Port–au–Prince
and Shanghai, with the direct impact on families and strategies to overcome the problems.
2.0 Problems & Impacts
2.1 Port–au–Prince
The average annual rate of urban population change in Haiti is 2.4%. (World Urbanization
Prospects: The 2014 Revision). Being the capital of Haiti, Port–au–Prince has experienced rapid
urban expansion in recent years. However, problems in different aspects of life have aroused
people's concerns.
2.1.1 Inequality: 40% of the total population in Haiti has access to less than 6% of the national
income, whereas the richest Haitians (around 1%) control more than 26% of the aggregate property.
Most importantly, the gap between rich and poor is still expanding. (IFAD, 2015)

Gentrification in the city:
Rauch (1993), Crihfield and Panggaben (1995), Glaser et al (1995), Simon (1998), Simon and
Nardinelli (2002) and Glaser and Saiz( 2004) address human capital as impacting the economic
performance of the area and is also identified as the main determinant of growth in metropolitan
areas. Crihfield and Panggabean (1995) include four points of production function: labor, private
physical capital, public infrastructure capital, and human capital. The researchers analyzed race,
amenities, growth, geography as well as public capital investment to ascertain the large impact
human capital has on the growth of the city, and in the case study of Atlanta, this growth impacts the

Smith views gentrification as a negative thing, and a "product of political economic shifts in local
and global markets (Smith pp.92)". He notes that this revanchist or French for Revenge city theme
aggressively re–claims the city and tries to re–infuse the city with middle–class morals, standards
and costs. Gentrification also experiences a pattern of what many note as consumption in which
those with the sweat equity such as the LGBT community but some such as Rose (1984) suggested
that first wave gentrifiers were of small means, but were able to carve out spaces and enclaves of
sage space based on sweat equity Smith (1996) reintroduces the notion of the rent gap in
gentrification. Knopp (1987) mentions the increase in rents and the inability for pioneer gentrifiers
in the gay community to keep up with the increase in taxes and home prices.
Knopp (1990) analyzes the significance of gays in the gentrification process in New Orleans,
Louisiana. He finds that are three sets of events that present catalysts for neighborhood
transformation; the transformation included gay men, specifically white gay men who were active in
the community and also developers of the neighborhood. Knopp concluded that, "...the class
interests of those who treat land as a financial asset can be facilitated by forming cross–cultural and
cross–class alliances with gay communities" ( p.337). Knopp (1990) also believed that the male

Issues
First and foremost, the most pressing issue and reason for the current greenways project rests on the
desire of the citizenry to realize and exercise alternative means of transportation. Indiana, like most
mid–western states, is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels and recognizes the strong hold that fuel
economies have on its citizens. In Life After Oil Jeremiah Creedon states, "Oil supplies are

have a pretty good handle on how to navigate through so many people. As it turns out, we were
much too confident for our own good.
My brother Adam lives in New York as a doctor with his wife Cydney. My parents thought it would
be good for me to have one last adventure before I went off to college the next fall, so what better
place to go than New York? I was so excited to go, since all of my friends had already gone. They
told me what a wonderful and magical time they had there. I had been planning outfits for months.
To be honest, I was almost to the point of obsession with the idea of New York. It was the city. But
after finally sorting through my clothes and picking out only what I absolutely needed, we packed
enough to last us the entire week. Of course we had to be careful not to bring too much, so they do
not charge us extra at the airport for a bag weighing too much. My dad is always very conservative
on trips to save as much money as we can. He books the cheapest flights, reserves the cheapest
restaurants, and finds the cheapest train tickets, so we have more spending money to do other

Immigration Benefits And Promotes Urbanization
Immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in New York and Vancouver from 1860 to 1920.
The period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century is important in the urban
development history of Canadian and American. Urbanization is a historical process that contains
urban development. Urbanization is a process of population concentration as well as a process that
advanced production modes substitute backward modes. At the same time, it is also the process to
adapt to the mode of production and to innovate lifestyle. Hence, urbanization is a dynamic process
that many aspects of economics, society and culture comprehensively transform caused by the
revolution of social productive forces.
The urban population boost resulted in various benefits. Immigration is a main propelling force to
urbanization. It also propelled optimization of the urban population structure, shaped the
characteristics of urban residence, and also formed civic multicultural style and features. In my
opinion, immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in Vancouver and New York from 1860 to
1920.
Canada's urbanization was inherently and closely related with that of Europe and North America.
Local factors and communities' elite played a significant role in the development of Canada's cities
(especially in western part). Vancouver is a representative of urbanization and immigration from
1860 to 1920. Norbert Magdonald noted that "prior to the arrival of the first train in 1887, the

Comparison Between Karl Marx And Emile Durkheim
Name: Crystal Henrick FL6132
Compare and contrast the various early European urban theorists as found in Chapter 1 of the course
text. (300–400 words)
The two theorists i've decided to compare and contrast are Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim. Firstly
i'll compare them to one another. From all the readings I did and past education on these individuals
I found they have a lot of the same views in regards to religion. Both Emlie Durkheim and Karl
Marx believe that religion is a projection of mans hopes and desires. They both also agree that
religion plays a powerful role in influencing the members of a society. While coming up with these
theories they were both more concerned with the human rather than the religion. Both of them did
not believe in a god or gods. It's been said that Marx saw god as idealization of human nature while
Durkheim believed the idea of a god was society itself. They were not religious people so it's
interesting that they did have some of the same views and theories regarding religion in the society.
The differences between them are pretty simple. As I was previously comparing their views on
religion I can continue that with talking about their differences in regards to religion, Marx argues
that religion oppresses the people in the society while Durkheim argues that religion unites the
society. Further; Emile Durkheim was a Functionalist, meaning he looked at society in a scientific
way. He believed that members of the same society all wanted the same

The Environment And Governance Of Modern Cities
The topic of ecological sustainability can be complex or simple, depending on the many factors that
take place. In living systems, being sustainable means to produce more than to waste. By creating
something sustainable, it assures that the resources can be recycled and will be available for people
in the future to meet their needs. In terms of modern cities, the sustainability depends on how much
minerals and energy we bring into the city (water, energy), and how we use them effectively for our
health and community, while keeping the available resources from depleting. Not only that, the
sustainability also depends on the cities form and infrastructure to support an average citizen's daily
needs. With the politics and governance of modern cities, how viable are plans of creating a
sustainable city now? Is it possible? Many nations have already agreed that it is an important and
influential issue, with harsh consequences if not tackled. The situation of a city and its flaws also
depends on if the cities are in the third world, or in a rich nation. A sustainable city needs to be
environmentally worthy, have a suitable infrastructure for all and should be well run. These
characteristics can only be achieved by proper governance and the collective effort of the citizens.
The essay discusses the importance of environmental sustainability and some of the widely known
issues of urban and rural sustainability around the globe and possible solutions and preventions.

Growing Suburb in Texas Frisco is a family oriented suburb on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas. The
city became popular because it was an affordable place outside of the city to start a family. What
was once a quiet rural suburb has now turned into a booming city of its own. Over time, the city has
become the central location for business corporations which has almost doubled the cost of living
and annual income per household since the year 2000. The growth of the city has caused an increase
in the number of schools, hospitals, recreation centers, churches, and stores.

It has caused a competitive environment within the educational institutes as well as the professional
environment after graduation. Those with just a high school diploma or GED find it hard to afford
housing because the average cost of a home in Frisco is around $270,000. During the census, it was
found that about 500 people living in Frisco were homeless. Staggering statistics show that 33% of
these people were students. Homelessness negatively impacts biopsychosocial functioning. Poverty,
lack of food, and basic needs being unmet cause these individuals to have a decline in functioning.
Often times, homeless people are pushed out of the city due to lack of resources. Typically they are
sent to Dallas where better care and services can be provided.
Medical Care Due to the high level of competition throughout the city, there are numerous hospitals,
medical clinics, and emergency rooms to cater to the growing population. These facilities compete
with one another to offer care to people. There are also specialized facilities which can aid in
prenatal care, sexually transmitted diseases, chronic diseases, and more. As a member of this
community, it is ensuring to know there are so many care providers in the area. These facilities aid
in the development of children and can increase the longevity and quality of life in adults.

Home From Nowhere By James Kunstler
James Kunstler in his book Home from Nowhere, slams American urban design and goes into detail
about its horrifying attributes. He calls the United States a theme park nation that needs superficial
stimulation to hide unhappiness. These conditions exist, in part, due to our association of the city
with the dirty industrial revolution rather than the more natural green environment that people
prefer. He calls the public realm the connective tissue of our everyday world. It is parks, streets,
squares, sidewalks, vistas and views and defined open space and seascapes, rural working
landscapes and wilderness and porticos and entrances to the more often private spaces of buildings.
A good public realm is important to foster interaction between ... Show more content on

Kohn writes about how this affects our civil discourse, people congregating in suburban shopping
malls creates an odd qusi–public / private space leading to questions of free speech. This
privatization of the public realm would not occur in traditional society where people congregate at
neighborhood parks or downtown plazas and public sidewalks.
Perhaps some of the most intolerable consequences of poor urban design are discussed by Powell
who writes that sprawl and the fragmentation of people along social and racial lines creates
inequality. This is because historically only the middle and upper class were mobile enough to
sprawl as discriminatory housing practices disenfranchised minorities and redlined their
communities. The problem intensifies as concentrated poverty creates an environment void of
opportunities and as Kunstler has stated our auto dependent society disadvantages the poor who lack
mobility.
Davis highlights these issues of the public realm, inequality, and concentrated poverty while writing
about Los Angeles. A city where the wealthy cower behind guarded walls and downtown is filled
with skyscrapers that turn inward away from the public. Davis also points out that this type of
destruction of the public realm is subsidized by LA's taxpayers who shelled out two billion dollars
to lure banks and professional

The Baby Boomer : The New Staple Of The American Dream
INTRO During the "Baby Boomer" era, following WWII, America underwent one of the largest
demographic shifts and population growths in history. Huge amounts of home construction on the
outskirts of America's largest cities, known as "levittowns" became the new staple of the American
dream, with the houses sporting two car garages, and white picket fences. These low density,
predominantly middle class residential districts, were America's first true suburbs. These suburbs
were constructed mainly in response to the new postwar consumerism that enveloped the parents of
the baby boomers. With the new economy, affordable housing, and most families becoming single
income dependent, families grew bigger and bigger. The 1947 passing of the bill that lead to the
interstate highway system, only added fuel to the fire of suburbanization. With the new interstate
highway system, more affordable and fuel efficient automobiles, and the government aiding in the
financing of new suburban homes, the choice seemed elementary. All of these factors pushing to the
suburban movement, only spurred the baby boomers on, and between 1940–50, there was an 835%
percent increase in living births with nearly 4 million children being born every year. In 1940,
19.5% of the United States population lived in what would be considered to be suburban areas
outside of large metropolitan areas, however, by 1960; the number was pushing nearly 40%. The
postwar suburbanization of America during the baby boomer

Can Critical Regionalism Counteract The Impact Of...
Can Critical Regionalism counteract the impact of Globalisation on our cities?
In the era of constant networking and relaying of information, the world has become a much smaller
place. The shrinking world has somewhat become a familiar spectacle of identical fads and
lifestyles. At least in the developed countries, globalisation has given birth to homogenous consumer
culture. Demonstrated not only by the expansion of multi–national cooperations such as Apple and
Starbucks but also by the indistinct architecture. It is a common sighting in urban cities today to see
the identical steel, concrete and glass structures. This occurrence might be innate due to the easy
exportation of concepts and architects, however not obligatory. Whilst advancing towards a modern
society, architects have adapted this "universal style" of architecture that fails to represent the unique
topography of different cities. Architects have the choice to either "repeat the same building
everywhere or to push ourselves forward, to create an encounter between ourselves and the local
culture" (Koolhaas, 2012). If the notion of Critical Regionalism were to be practiced by architects
through the integration of the local culture with modern techniques, it could potentially return the
missing identities of these cities.
Critical Regionalism was devised during the early 20th century, as an attempt to reject the monotony
developed by the International Style and the purposeless ornamentation utilised by

China 's Recent Urban Planning
Study Context and Data Sources
2.1 Beijing's Recent Urban Planning
Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The current
population as of 2014 was over 21 million. The area of Beijing Metropolitan Area (BMA) is 16,410
square kilometers. According to land use dataset of Beijing Institute of City Planning, the total urban
area as of 2012 was 1,675 square kilometers. The BMA currently comprises 16 administrative
subdivisions, as presented in Figure 1.
Figure 1 The Beijing Metropolitan Area Since the latest administrative boundary adjustment of
Beijing in 1958, there have been five urban master plans drafted in 1958, 1973, 1982, 1992 and
2004. Each master plan was associated with a planned overall land use map. Individual land parcels
in the map were assigned with a land classification of either urban (residential, commercial,
industrial, public green land, and mixed–use land) or non–urban (farmland, forestland, and wetland)
(Long, Gu, & Han, 2012). The maps guide the future urban development, and actual land uses
should conform to the land classification plan.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, the BMA has experienced an unprecedented increase in
population growth and urban development. By the year 2003, Beijing's population and urban built–
up area had already surpassed the capacity set forth in the 1992 –2010 Master Plan, seven years
ahead of the plan's scheduled expiration date. To address new challenges and plan for greater

America's New Look as an Urban Nation
When the United States was founded as a nation after the Revolutionary War it was largely agrarian
in nature. Even when people lived in the village, that town was made up fewer that ten houses on
average and only occasionally had other buildings such as a school, church, or small store. The
people lived together for protection, and traveled out to their farm land everyday to till, plant and
harvest. With the advent of the industrial revolution staring in the early part of the nineteenth
century and then even more so with the information revolution of the 1960's onward people began
moving away from the country and into the city because that was where they worked. There were

Two other problems with an urban society were; gathering enough drinking water for the increasing
populous and disposing of waste. When Europe started to urbanize, they did not realize the need for
the latter and they had plagues that swept through their filthy cities. When they had learned the
lesson and provided adequate sewage disposal. Transportation of goods could come into a city and
be distributed to building sites. Therefore, railways and roadbeds that could handle the traffic were
needed. Also, people who live closer together tend to be increasingly lawless. To maintain order, a
police force had to be maintained. This public service was accompanied by the need for a fire
department and public utility workers that were not as needed in the country.
When people move into a city there is going to be a division of labor that will eventually evolve into
a class structure. In the United States the Constitution was set up in Europe and other places around
the world. However, there will always be the gentried business owners, the middle class merchants,
the lower class factory workers and the poor. These four distinct groups seem to form due to natural
causes. It becomes class when it is difficult to move between the economic levels. In the United
States, people were able to move between the different classes if they chose, but it continued to be a
difficult change. The classes in the US were not developed

The Master And Margarita By Mikhail Bulgakov
The Master and Margarita is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov that is set in the Russian city of Moscow
while Invisible Cities is a novel by Italo Calvino. Both novels share striking similarities but also do
share sharply contrasting approaches. Both books are fictional and have similar stylistic devices in
their description of events. Invisible Cities is a book that requires the reader to use extensively of his
imagination so as to envision the cities that he is describing. The description of the cities can be
confusing as is with description of Ziara as "The city does not consist of this, (stairs and streets) but
of relationships between the measurememts of its space and the events of its past: the height of a
lamppost and the distance and the sistance from the ground of a hanged usurper's swaying feet;..."
(Pg 10). Imagination and perception are themes that Calvino advances in this book in his description
of cities. The cities have fancy sounding names with functions that their residents have and play
being different from one city to another.
Polo travels with King Khan and narrates to him about the cities, and although the kind is unsure
about the existence of the cities, he is nonetheless looking forward to hearing about them and their
characters and leaders. Polo at one time asks Khan to imagine sitting in one of the cities and trying
to experience what being in that city at that time felt like. The invitation by Polo to Khan to imagine

Post the strike the land on which the mills stood became prized possessions to acquire, where space
was a concern. It only drew the attention of one and all who wanted to show their power and claim

for the decline of the industry. In spite of the fact that the competition today has become more
stronger due to aspects such as cost of raw materials and transportation along with fuel, taxation and

It needs to be understood that this is a case observed worldwide, but even so the conditions
especially in Mumbai are different as compared to the ones in Manchester or Lowell. The existence
of such a vast market needs to be the reason for the industry to flourish. Knowing very well all these
aspects the mill owners and the state are thoroughly convinced that the only source for earning
enormous profits is through the surplus mill lands.
The changing landscape of Bombay is considered as a shift in the political economy of Bombay
away from the industrial time zone marked by mills, chawls and chimneys of mills into a post–

economy of the country. A place for international finance, trade and commerce, a new knowledge

These issues are made worse for veterans living in rural areas due to the lack of access to VA

Survival of the fittest: it almost seems like the "fittest" of this generation are those who live in an
urban environment. Even though the rural population makes up a significant amount of the overall
population, they are neglected. When most people think about rural living they think of the poorest

disadvantage of many, nearly 60 million people in the United States live in rural areas (Census,

there are steps that can –– and should –– be taken to improve the nation's current health services.
Rural healthcare providers must consider tackling certain factors such as the growing patient to
health professional ratio, environmental conditions, and ethical and legal matters that must be

Accessibility to Healthcare
One of the characteristics that exemplify rural healthcare is the lack of doctors per capita. Statistics
show that there is an unequal distribution of health care; more services are targeted and provided for
the urban population. According to a study in Rickett's book, Rural Health in the United States, 20%
of the U.S. population lives in rural areas; however, only 8% of doctors serve the rural community.
These residents also face the challenge of finding specialized doctors for their specific needs. In
some cases, patients need to travel long distances to get the health care that they need. A study was
conducted in which 20,693,828 patients visited a clinic. Based on this study, Patients in the rural
areas needed to travel 2 to 3 times

Discuss the impact of the automobile's rise on urban form during the twentieth century and critically
evaluate planning measures used to limit the negative social and environmental aspects Since the
rise of the automobile, there have been many dramatic changes to urban form in attempts to
accommodate this new mode of transport. Focusing on America and Britain, this discussion
considers influences on all scales ranging from reclassification of physical roads to the
decentralization of urban cores. The rising social and environmental concerns caused by the increase
in vehicle usage include pedestrian safety, residential livability, and environmental deterioration. I
have decided to explore this question by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lippincott suggested the widening of existing streets and "new diagonal arteries dedicated only to
traffic", these plans alone would cut across the existing urban fabric dramatically (see figure 1).
Eventually, the study led to formations of Major Street Traffic Plans, written by Olmsted,
Bartholomew and Cheney from 1929. When implemented, the plans altered urban form in American
cities with new openings, extensions and street patterns to reduce barriers to traffic (Roth, 2007).
Figure 1. Proposed Plans for Downtown, Los Angeles
(Traffic Commission of City and County of Los Angeles, 1924)
To an extent, the Major Street Plans and motorways were planning measures to limit social and
environmental externalities. "Separating pedestrian, streetcar, and auto traffic" enhanced the form of
urban areas and provided an efficient, coordinated street system, for example improved traffic
crossings ensured maximum pedestrian safety (Brown, 2006). With the separation of mobility and
access, crossings and passageways secured pedestrian safety in high traffic areas. However, with
cities serving as "places of innovation and creative hubs of the economy", it is assumed that the
mass population would favour proximity to central business districts (Jacobs, 1961). Considering a
lower population residing in outskirt regions and motorway infrastructures encircling cities,
consequently, the separation of pedestrian and

Prevalence And Types Of Cancer Among Urban Rural Populations
Objective: To determine the prevalence and types of cancer among urban–rural populations and their
relation to socioeconomic status.
Methodology: A cross sectional study carried out in three hospitals in Punjab named Mayo Hospital,
Lahore, Nishtar hospital and civil hospital in Multan, Pakistan. All the new cases of cancers (all
known types of cancer) were recorded during the months of August 2013 through February 2014.
Details of age, sex, socioeconomic status, address whether rural or urban, stage, type of cancer and
hemoglobin levels at the time of presentation were recorded after taking the verbal consent from the
patients and the attendees. For data analysis, Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS v. 21)
software was used. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Non–Hodgkin Lymphoma with 40 cases (13.1%) out of which 26 (65%) were poor and 14 (35%)
were rich, 21 (52.5%) were rural patients and 19 (47.5%) urban. Squamous cell carcinoma with 29
cases (9.5%): 23 (79.3%) were poor and 6 (20.7%) were rich, 22 (75.86%) were rural patients and 7
(24.16%) urban. Carcinoma of cervix with 22 cases (7.2%); 16 (72.72%) were poor and 6 (27.3%)
were rich, 13 (59.1%) patients were from rural areas 9 (40.9%) were from urban areas. Several other
rare carcinomas resembling Wilms tumor, with as few cases as 1 case in the time period of 6 months
are also discussed.
Conclusion: The study shows that in general, cancer is extra prevalent in poor socioeconomic status,
population and those patients that live in rural areas. Further study should be carried out to observe
the effects of other variables reminiscent of screening, knowledge to pursue medical attention, the
time to search for medical attention, implementation of preventive methods, environmental factors
should be taken into account and the geographical area should be increased so that the study can be
carried on a larger scale.
INTRODUCTION: Cancers of multiple types remain one of the foremost challenging and
significant obstacles faced by health providers with numbers rising to an epidemic in recent years. It
is a leading cause of death worldwide. In 2007 it accounted for approximately 8 million deaths

Why We Need An Urban County Government

  • 1. Why We Need An Urban County Government Why We Need an Urban County Government For too long this area has taken a back seat to the larger cities around us. We need to join the rest of the progressive regions in this state and establish a new, more efficient form of government. Pulaski County and the cities of Somerset, Science Hill, Ferguson, and Burnside need to merge together and create an urban county government. This will help to consolidate duplicate services, provide better representation for the citizens of Pulaski County, and strengthen the economy in this region. We live in a magnificent part of the state of Kentucky. We have picturesque landscapes, really pleasant residents, and a magnificent lake that supports a huge part of our economy through tourism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, it is possible for the citizens to vote to implement this type of government. Therefore, in April of 2013 the Somerset–Pulaski County United group formed and began the process of having feasibility studies done to see if the formation of an urban county government would be an alternative that would serve our area well. According to the Commonwealth Journal, a newspaper in Somerset, Kentucky, "A group of about 60 community leaders, clustered as Somerset–Pulaski County United (SPCU), is embarking on a study to determine if a consolidated or united government in Pulaski County would be more efficient and more responsive to the county's 63,000 residents." (Mardis and Shmidheiser). This group, a cross–section that well represents the residents of this county, believes that the formation an urban county government is a great opportunity for all our futures. Unfortunately, the SPCU has faced much antagonism in this initial phase of work. Many current government leaders are afraid of what changes might do to their positions of power. But these same leaders are also the ones who create problems and allow current ones to continue. Having a council of peers will give a voice everyone in the area, not just the few who reside in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After walking into countless stores you are starting to notice that they all have one thing in common. What possibly could all these diverse stores have in common, they all have a 12" by 10" sign with white lettering and red background saying Help Wanted. In " Heart Land and the Rural South Exodus" by Patrick Carr and Maria Kefalas, your able get the chance in knowing how much rural areas are in danger. In this paper I will argue that thriving small business are going to eventually be in danger persuaded by Carr and Kefalas of triple threat explained by Carr and Kefals, small business owners facing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We need to be aware that by people leaving the rural areas the shops we love the most may not be there the next time we come back to that town. Comparing Buffalo's downtown to where it is now to 10 years ago, its looks completely different. Due to the small business being foreclosed, we are not turning into very healthy downtown. But the stores that we still have we need to take advantage of them because you never know how long they will be there for. Rural areas through the country are facing the triple threat, the biggest defeat that can ever happen. Triple threat consist of three of the biggest fears that any company, rural community would ever want to face. Carr and Kefalas persuade small business owners, farmers and ranchers, and communities, that they aren 't the only ones facing the fear. " No one would deny that finding work in today's countryside means facing a triple threat: a failing farm and factory–based economy, rising unemployment, and shrinking wages and benefit" ( Carr and Kefalas 21). As a citizen for rural area, I am noticing are town is slowly getting hit by the triple threat. Generation farms are having to shut down, due to the low finical income that is coming. • 5. Sustainability For Sustainability : A Variety Of Academic... Introduction As you know, nowadays, different definitions exist for sustainability in a variety of academic fields and disciplines. What seems to characterize many of these definitions of sustainability is the recognition that the future is important to consider. (Holmberg,1992). Perhaps the most common and well–used definition comes from the Brundtland Commission, which defines sustainability as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". URL1 Increasingly, urban scholars, planners, developers, investors are expected to address sustainability issues in building and urban design projects. First, the demolition of cultural– heritage design and vernacular urban places and spaces is changing rapidly. One of these changes is related to build environment that are impacted by globalization negative characteristics and lost its harmony with the local features such as technology and culture in time and space. The local potentials about social and functional aspects are largely ignored. On the other hand, unique built environment are replaced by global forms and designs in inappropriate method which are often not matched to local conditions. (King 2004). Using land uses in different ways removes their original characteristics and vitality in new pattern. Secondly, it impacts place– identity of urban environment by separating them from their continuity with local conditions and representing them as a sample of new era. These consequences express sustainability of new forms and processes of urban design in combination of two different ideas. "They question how place identity is created, recreated and sustained" (Zetter, Watson, 2006) Although the sustainability issue have a complicated factors but most of researches on urbanization and urban design has framed it in the category of environmental agenda involved with some issues such energy consumption, water and air pollution and transportation. However, each country owned and has an identity, a history, and culture. This requires to Starbucks to analyze the current market and adapt his offers according to the needs and mores (usages). There are several barriers facing Starbucks to the "teaching" people to change their consumption habits from tea and instant coffee. First of all, the major problem is that a cultural problem. I think that if Starbucks succeed with Chinese market they could also enter the Indian market, with the same research realize for China. 3– There is response to this question in the text, but I can explain my thought. When we buy a coffee at Starbucks we don't buy only a coffee but also a corporate images, a service, a way of thinking and living. Starbucks create its own environment, brand value. It represents the premium coffee. There is not only coffee, even if it is the Starbucks's specialty. Also, there is breakfast, drink, gift card, candy, lunch, and all spin–off products (derivative product or tie–in merchandise). The atmospheres of the place are a huge factor in the Starbucks experience. They want us to be the first and the most luxurious coffee. To respond to Americans and Europeans' increasing concern for the environment, Starbucks adopted a green marketing. They contribute to protect the environment by using recycled cup and other things. It's a way to play with the affective (emotional) component of the consumer. This way of thinking is true in western countries, I do not know about this fact in Middle Eastern and eastern countries. Introduction Urbanization and growth go with each other: no country has ever reached a great economy without a significant population shift into cities. According to United Nations databases, the proportion of the 2014 world population living in urban areas was 54 per cent, heading for 66 per cent by 2050. Urbanization is necessary to keep up growth in developing countries, and it yields other benefits as well. But it is not pain–less or always welcomed by policymakers or the general public. Managing urbanization is an important part of nurturing growth; neglecting cities–even in countries in which the level of urbanization is low–can impose heavy costs. Historically, urban infrastructures have materialized as a response to emergent issues, natural disasters are just an example of them. In the more distant past, construction has been a driven by localized issues such as sanitation, flooding or fire. The reaction has been to engineer systems (under the powers of centralized, state–led planning and public funding) that solve a single problem at a particular time. Little thought has been ... • 11. Benefits Of Small Town Living Growing up in a very little town in Illinois was a lot different than growing up in Houston, Texas. When I was in the fourth grade I found many things to have changed about my surroundings, I currently lived in a place where, the people thought and acted differently. I know now reading about it and understanding more that some of those changes were for the good and some were not. Small town living has its advantages such as, very close friendships, close approximately to may things, and friendly people. Looking back, I also realized that there were a lot of disadvantages such as lack of transportation, affects of a poor education, no opportunities for growth, crime, no diversity, and low paying jobs and housing. Now that I am older, and aware of the affects of living in a small town, I can see how these many things affected my life and will continue affect it in the future. I grew up, the majority of my live, in a town in central Illinois, Kincaid, or better known as South Fork because of the co–op with the schools around us in sports. This town is approximately 20 miles southeast of Springfield, and is only seven miles west from the nearest town, with many opportunities that my town did not offer (City–data). With a total population of 1,495, including the town of Tovey about a mile away, as of July 1, 2015 Kincaid is ranked as number 587 of 1,367 as being a small town in Illinois (Kincaid, IL). The loss of public housing and the expanse of the wealth gap throughout the state of Rhode Island has been a rising issue between the critics and supporters of gentrification, in both urban areas such as Providence and wealthy areas such as the island of Newport, among other examples. With the cities under a monopoly headed by the wealth of each neighborhood, one is left to wonder how such a system is fair to all groups. Relatively speaking, it isn't, and the only ones who benefit from such a system are white–skinned. With the deterioration of the economic status of Rhode Island, and especially in the city of Providence, more and more educated Caucasians are leaving to seek a more fertile economic environment. "Gentrification is a general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, many cities that are rich in culture, diversity, and vitality are beacons for white people interested in the "upcoming scene." This brings more and more whites who displace and marginalize the original residents through increasing prices. Cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco all have neighborhoods that originally had mostly poor, uneducated African Americans, and now are swelling with young, educated whites that have greatly increased the price of living. In Boston, Charlestown, Jamaica Plains, and Beacon Hill have all experienced intense characteristics of gentrification from the 1970s up until the present, showcasing an increase in the population with at least a bachelor's degree, as well as a large increase in new and renovated buildings. In New York, the most famous example of gentrification is in Harlem, has undergone a process of gentrification after becoming known as the national, and even international symbol for black culture with a vibrancy that is not seen in the suburbs. Finally, in San Francisco, in the bay area, there has been a massive influx of affluent companies that have completely devastated the middle class due to a high rise in wealthy, educated, employees. These employees have taken residence up in the bay area, causing the entirety of the already previously gentrified neighborhood to skyrocket to unobtainable prices, even for the ... • 15. The Complex Processes Of Urban Development The complex processes of urbanisation overarches and entails a set of social, cultural, economic, political, environmental and technological functions that result in sprawl and densities, proportional to core size and settlement. Further implicating the extensive use of natural resources from fringes and rural spheres within city limits to be consumed and then later in turn converted into waste. Urban ecosystems are therefore, complex multifaceted systems that require a burdensome amount of natural resources input and negotiations for their adequate development. In urban discourse, the lack of interdisciplinary and trans–disciplinary interest partly due to an absence of tools to which all disciplines can use to further incorporate ecological theories to assessment and planning of urban centers. All these connections have been made and academics have divided the complex concept into biophysical processes and socioeconomic processes when examining cities in case studies. The urban ecology theory and a closely related concept of urban metabolism can explain the technical aspects of urban density and growth but human influences are not accounted for in the assessment. However, human scholarship is a key component that shapes the metabolic processes in urban ecologies and in turn alters the initial footprint. By examining the historical context of urban ecology, the early stages and latter results of the urban ecology theory being transformed from a multidisciplinary concept into ... • 17. The Internal Production Spaces Of Large Cities This same logic leads not just towards generalized urban agglomeration but to the emergence of multiple dense industrial districts within the metropolis. The internal production spaces of large cities are composed of mosaics of particular kinds of industrial land use focused on localized nodal clusters comprising activities that range from manufacturing to office and service functions. For example, gun and jewellery manufacturing in Birmingham, England; footwear industry of East London; clothing production of New York City; motor–vehicle industry of Tokyo; and office functions in modern metropolis illustrate different aspects of the theory of industrial organization and location. They represent especially clear cases of the internal specialization of parts of the production space of the large metropolis. As such, they illustrate both, the generality of the problem of agglomeration and the wide diversity of concrete forms that it can assume under different conjectural circumstances. The metropolis and the neighbourhood can be linked to the Chicago school of urban sociology, which has developed ethnographic studies based on various ethnic neighbourhoods over several decades. This kind of work focuses on interaction and its density within the city, generating an ecological stereotype of the urban process depending on the conflict and competition between various groups and their growth in terms of spatial and social movement. Here, The Fool represents the conflict asexuals face when coming out, that they do not understand their bodies, that they are confused, that they are foolish. Other LGBTQ people face these challeges as well, but much people know much more about being lesbian, gay, or bisexual than they do about being ace. Of course that is not to say other LGBTQ folks do not face these stigmas as much, the oppression just operates slightly differently. Asexual people do not exist to many in the world, and along with bisexuals, pansexuals, polysexuals, nonbinary, intersex, and many other people, often receive no recognition or acknowledgement. Asexuals have adopted dragons as a sort of mascot, as the representation of not being real, not existing to people in the real world. It is not only lack of representation, but denial of struggles, denial of personhood, and strict adherence to binary categories. People who do not exist within well known labels, such as gay or straight, are persecuted, mistrusted, invalidated, and oppressed, sometimes by members of other oppressed groups. When it comes to race, people of color are already underrepresented in the media, and because asexuality is hardly present at all, asexual people of color are especially rare to find. When asexual people are represented in the media, they usually are not explicitly called asexual, or their lack of sexual attraction to others is driven by emotionlessness, detachment, or apathy. The association with asexuality and mental health disorders such as sociopathy fails to understand the key component of asexuality, which is asexuals do not feel sexual attraction, and just that. Asexuals can be completely able to feel romantic attraction, although some do not. No part of the definition of asexuality says asexuals must be completely cold and heartless. Essay about Clancy of the Overflow Clancy of the Overflow Analysis Bush poetry gives people a unique and interesting prospective into the people who made this country the way it is today and the history behind it. Clancy of the Overflow is a well known bush poem by poet AB "Banjo" Paterson. Clancy of the overflow is about a person from the city who met a drover/ shearer named Clancy. After meeting him he becomes jealous of Clancy's lifestyle which is better than his city life. Banjo does this to persuade the reader in believing that the country lifestyle which is portrayed as free, clean and laid back is better than the city lifestyle which is portrayed as dirty, hot and boring. Banjo also makes the reader believe that the attractiveness of living off the land and idealizing the country life as a drover making the quality of life in the country seems greater than in the city. Banjo uses imagery and the first person point of view to help the reader imagine what it would be like to be a drover. The person living in the city imagines what Clancy the drover is doing and feeling while he is stuck in a hot office all day. "As the stock are slowly stringing, Clancy rides behind them singing" and also "He sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended and at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars." The city living character is conveying what Clancy the drover is doing and how peaceful it would be if he could do the same. He also says "And I somehow fancy that I'd like to change with Clancy." This suggests that the city living character is somewhat jealous of Clancy, his job and his lifestyle. The city living character furthermore explains the city life as "Of the tramways and the buses making hurry down the street, and the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting". Albert Bemis, US housing manufacturer in the early twentieth century has a vested interest in using technology to advance new concepts in the design of houses. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this essay it will be demonstrated that these elements unified with technology to create change which impacted on changes in the design of housing. Urban Concepts Man's primary need has always been housing as shelter from the elements. Originally mud huts were built where hunters were able to find animals for food and then more permanent dwellings were built, using local materials, as the economy changed to agriculture. Later as populations grew so different environments emerged with significant change in the urban form and fabric of settlements. Housing was determined not only by available materials but also the cost of getting them to the place of construction. Different places had different availability of materials and labour which shaped the design of housing. Each technology therefore had an impact and was a common thread unifying changes in housing in Athens, Paris and Chicago. The period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century is important in the urban development history of Canadian and American. Urbanization is a historical process that contains urban development. Urbanization is a process of population concentration as well as a process that advanced production modes substitute backward modes. At the same time, it is also the process to adapt to the mode of production and to innovate lifestyle. Hence, urbanization is a dynamic process that many aspects of economics, society and culture comprehensively transform caused by the revolution of social productive forces. The urban population boost resulted in various benefits. Immigration is a main propelling force to urbanization. It also propelled optimization of the urban population structure, shaped the characteristics of urban residence, and also formed civic multicultural style and features. In my opinion, immigration benefits and promotes urbanization in Vancouver and New York from 1860 to 1920. Canada's urbanization was inherently and closely related with that of Europe and North America. Local factors and communities' elite played a significant role in the development of Canada's cities (especially in western part). (300–400 words) The two theorists i've decided to compare and contrast are Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim. Firstly i'll compare them to one another. From all the readings I did and past education on these individuals I found they have a lot of the same views in regards to religion. Both Emlie Durkheim and Karl Marx believe that religion is a projection of mans hopes and desires. They both also agree that religion plays a powerful role in influencing the members of a society. While coming up with these theories they were both more concerned with the human rather than the religion. Both of them did not believe in a god or gods. It's been said that Marx saw god as idealization of human nature while Durkheim believed the idea of a god was society itself. They were not religious people so it's interesting that they did have some of the same views and theories regarding religion in the society. The differences between them are pretty simple. As I was previously comparing their views on religion I can continue that with talking about their differences in regards to religion, Marx argues that religion oppresses the people in the society while Durkheim argues that religion unites the society. Further; Emile Durkheim was a Functionalist, meaning he looked at society in a scientific way. He believed that members of the same society all wanted the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. The Environment And Governance Of Modern Cities The topic of ecological sustainability can be complex or simple, depending on the many factors that take place. In living systems, being sustainable means to produce more than to waste. By creating something sustainable, it assures that the resources can be recycled and will be available for people in the future to meet their needs. In terms of modern cities, the sustainability depends on how much minerals and energy we bring into the city (water, energy), and how we use them effectively for our health and community, while keeping the available resources from depleting. Not only that, the sustainability also depends on the cities form and infrastructure to support an average citizen's daily needs. With the politics and governance of modern cities, how viable are plans of creating a sustainable city now? Is it possible? Many nations have already agreed that it is an important and influential issue, with harsh consequences if not tackled. The situation of a city and its flaws also depends on if the cities are in the third world, or in a rich nation. A sustainable city needs to be environmentally worthy, have a suitable infrastructure for all and should be well run. These characteristics can only be achieved by proper governance and the collective effort of the citizens. The essay discusses the importance of environmental sustainability and some of the widely known issues of urban and rural sustainability around the globe and possible solutions and preventions. He calls the United States a theme park nation that needs superficial stimulation to hide unhappiness. These conditions exist, in part, due to our association of the city with the dirty industrial revolution rather than the more natural green environment that people prefer. He calls the public realm the connective tissue of our everyday world. It is parks, streets, squares, sidewalks, vistas and views and defined open space and seascapes, rural working landscapes and wilderness and porticos and entrances to the more often private spaces of buildings. Kohn writes about how this affects our civil discourse, people congregating in suburban shopping malls creates an odd qusi–public / private space leading to questions of free speech. This privatization of the public realm would not occur in traditional society where people congregate at neighborhood parks or downtown plazas and public sidewalks. Perhaps some of the most intolerable consequences of poor urban design are discussed by Powell who writes that sprawl and the fragmentation of people along social and racial lines creates inequality. This is because historically only the middle and upper class were mobile enough to sprawl as discriminatory housing practices disenfranchised minorities and redlined their communities. The problem intensifies as concentrated poverty creates an environment void of opportunities and as Kunstler has stated our auto dependent society disadvantages the poor who lack mobility. Davis highlights these issues of the public realm, inequality, and concentrated poverty while writing about Los Angeles. A city where the wealthy cower behind guarded walls and downtown is filled with skyscrapers that turn inward away from the public. Davis also points out that this type of destruction of the public realm is subsidized by LA's taxpayers who shelled out two billion dollars to lure banks and professional ... • 52. The Baby Boomer : The New Staple Of The American Dream INTRO During the "Baby Boomer" era, following WWII, America underwent one of the largest demographic shifts and population growths in history. Huge amounts of home construction on the outskirts of America's largest cities, known as "levittowns" became the new staple of the American dream, with the houses sporting two car garages, and white picket fences. These low density, predominantly middle class residential districts, were America's first true suburbs. These suburbs were constructed mainly in response to the new postwar consumerism that enveloped the parents of the baby boomers. With the new economy, affordable housing, and most families becoming single income dependent, families grew bigger and bigger. The 1947 passing of the bill that lead to the interstate highway system, only added fuel to the fire of suburbanization. With the new interstate highway system, more affordable and fuel efficient automobiles, and the government aiding in the financing of new suburban homes, the choice seemed elementary. All of these factors pushing to the suburban movement, only spurred the baby boomers on, and between 1940–50, there was an 835% percent increase in living births with nearly 4 million children being born every year. In 1940, 19.5% of the United States population lived in what would be considered to be suburban areas outside of large metropolitan areas, however, by 1960; the number was pushing nearly 40%. In the era of constant networking and relaying of information, the world has become a much smaller place. The shrinking world has somewhat become a familiar spectacle of identical fads and lifestyles. At least in the developed countries, globalisation has given birth to homogenous consumer culture. Demonstrated not only by the expansion of multi–national cooperations such as Apple and Starbucks but also by the indistinct architecture. It is a common sighting in urban cities today to see the identical steel, concrete and glass structures. This occurrence might be innate due to the easy exportation of concepts and architects, however not obligatory. Whilst advancing towards a modern society, architects have adapted this "universal style" of architecture that fails to represent the unique topography of different cities. Architects have the choice to either "repeat the same building everywhere or to push ourselves forward, to create an encounter between ourselves and the local culture" (Koolhaas, 2012). If the notion of Critical Regionalism were to be practiced by architects through the integration of the local culture with modern techniques, it could potentially return the missing identities of these cities. Critical Regionalism was devised during the early 20th century, as an attempt to reject the monotony developed by the International Style and the purposeless ornamentation utilised by ... • 58. China 's Recent Urban Planning Study Context and Data Sources 2.1 Beijing's Recent Urban Planning Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The current population as of 2014 was over 21 million. The area of Beijing Metropolitan Area (BMA) is 16,410 square kilometers. According to land use dataset of Beijing Institute of City Planning, the total urban area as of 2012 was 1,675 square kilometers. The BMA currently comprises 16 administrative subdivisions, as presented in Figure 1. Figure 1 The Beijing Metropolitan Area Since the latest administrative boundary adjustment of Beijing in 1958, there have been five urban master plans drafted in 1958, 1973, 1982, 1992 and 2004. Each master plan was associated with a planned overall land use map. Individual land parcels in the map were assigned with a land classification of either urban (residential, commercial, industrial, public green land, and mixed–use land) or non–urban (farmland, forestland, and wetland) (Long, Gu, & Han, 2012). The maps guide the future urban development, and actual land uses should conform to the land classification plan. Since the beginning of the 1990s, the BMA has experienced an unprecedented increase in population growth and urban development. By the year 2003, Beijing's population and urban built– up area had already surpassed the capacity set forth in the 1992 –2010 Master Plan, seven years ahead of the plan's scheduled expiration date. Essay on America’s New Look as an Urban Nation America's New Look as an Urban Nation When the United States was founded as a nation after the Revolutionary War it was largely agrarian in nature. Even when people lived in the village, that town was made up fewer that ten houses on average and only occasionally had other buildings such as a school, church, or small store. The people lived together for protection, and traveled out to their farm land everyday to till, plant and harvest. With the advent of the industrial revolution staring in the early part of the nineteenth century and then even more so with the information revolution of the 1960's onward people began moving away from the country and into the city because that was where they worked. Two other problems with an urban society were; gathering enough drinking water for the increasing populous and disposing of waste. When Europe started to urbanize, they did not realize the need for the latter and they had plagues that swept through their filthy cities. When they had learned the lesson and provided adequate sewage disposal. Transportation of goods could come into a city and be distributed to building sites. Therefore, railways and roadbeds that could handle the traffic were needed. Also, people who live closer together tend to be increasingly lawless. To maintain order, a police force had to be maintained. This public service was accompanied by the need for a fire department and public utility workers that were not as needed in the country. When people move into a city there is going to be a division of labor that will eventually evolve into a class structure. In the United States the Constitution was set up in Europe and other places around the world. However, there will always be the gentried business owners, the middle class merchants, the lower class factory workers and the poor. These four distinct groups seem to form due to natural causes. It becomes class when it is difficult to move between the economic levels. The Master And Margarita By Mikhail Bulgakov The Master and Margarita is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov that is set in the Russian city of Moscow while Invisible Cities is a novel by Italo Calvino. Both novels share striking similarities but also do share sharply contrasting approaches. Both books are fictional and have similar stylistic devices in their description of events. Invisible Cities is a book that requires the reader to use extensively of his imagination so as to envision the cities that he is describing. The description of the cities can be confusing as is with description of Ziara as "The city does not consist of this, (stairs and streets) but of relationships between the measurememts of its space and the events of its past: the height of a lamppost and the distance and the sistance from the ground of a hanged usurper's swaying feet;..." (Pg 10). Imagination and perception are themes that Calvino advances in this book in his description of cities. The cities have fancy sounding names with functions that their residents have and play being different from one city to another. Polo travels with King Khan and narrates to him about the cities, and although the kind is unsure about the existence of the cities, he is nonetheless looking forward to hearing about them and their characters and leaders. Polo at one time asks Khan to imagine sitting in one of the cities and trying to experience what being in that city at that time felt like. Rural healthcare providers must consider tackling certain factors such as the growing patient to health professional ratio, environmental conditions, and ethical and legal matters that must be executed. 3 Accessibility to Healthcare One of the characteristics that exemplify rural healthcare is the lack of doctors per capita. Statistics show that there is an unequal distribution of health care; more services are targeted and provided for the urban population. According to a study in Rickett's book, Rural Health in the United States, 20% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas; however, only 8% of doctors serve the rural community.
