3. INTRODUCTION :
Plastic waste- a material which is
hazard to
the environment

4. What is a plastic?
A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic
or semi- synthetic organic amorphous solids used in the manufactu
of industrial products.
plastic are typically polymer of high molecular mass
and many contain other substances to improve performance and/or
reduce costs. Monomers of plastic are either natural or synthetic
organic compounds.

5. The following types of waste plastic can be used in
the construction of rural roads:
• films ( Carry Bags, Cups) thickness up to 60micron (PE, PP and
PS)
• Hard foams (PS) any thickness
• Soft Foams (PE and PP) any thickness.
• Laminated Plastics thickness up to 60 micron (Aluminum coated
also) packing materials used for biscuits, chocolates, etc.,

7. 1.SEGREGATION
-Plastic waste collected from various sources
must be separated from other waste.
-Maximum thickness of 60 microns.

8. 2.CLEANING PROCESS
Plastic waste get cleaned and dried

-Plastics will be shredded or cut into small pieces

10. 4.COLLECTION PROCESS

11. METHODOLOGY :
The
aggregate mix
is heated to
165°c (as per
the HRS
specification)
and transferred
to mixing
chamber.

12. -Similarly the bitumen is heated up to a maximum of 160 degree to
have a good binding and to prevent weak boding
-The shredded plastic waste is added in equal proportion.

13. The plastic waste coated aggregate mixed with bitumen
is used for road construction.
The road laying temperature is between 110- 120 degree.
The roller used is 8 ton capacity.

14. MERITS:
• Use higher percentage of plastic waste
• Reduce the need of bitumen by around 10%.
• Increase the strength and performance of the road.
• Reduce the cost to around Rs.5000/km of single land road.
• Generate jobs for rag pickers.
• Develop a technology, which is eco-friendly.

15. DEMERITS:
1.Cleaning process-toxic co-mingled in waste plastic.
2.During the road laying process-presence of chlorine release noxious hcl ga

- will trigger leaching
- release of fine polymer particles

16.  A method to decrease the environmental pollution.
 Plastic will increase the melting point of the bitumen.
 Plastic road would be a boon for India hot and extremely humid climate where
and eco-friendly roads which will relive the earth from plastic waste.
