PIL Tip of the Week
Time management is a hard skill for most people to learn. If you can manage
your time effectively, you have taken one of the first steps to becoming a successful
student. Keeping a paper planner can be difficult, as it is just one more thing to carry.
Nowadays, there are many great Apps to help you get organized. Here are a few
options to download today:
1) Google Calendar:
This is the simplest and most often used since it is connected to your Catmail
account. You can also sync it to your phone’s calendar and carry it with you all
the time.
2) Habitica:
If you like video games, this may be a great way for you to manage your time.
Earn rewards for your virtual character each time you complete a task on your
to-do list. It’s a fun and entertaining way to keep track of your schedule.
3) 30/30:
This app lets you set timers for each of the tasks on you to-do list. It’s easy to
remember to give yourself study breaks when you’re timing your activities.
If you need help setting up your scheduling and organizing your study time, contact a
Learning Advisor to help you use these Apps!
Come to a workshop and share your own strategies for time management.

Every week we interview two CESL students. If you
are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student
Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Name: Jonathan Country: El Salvador Level: 5B
How long have you been in Tucson and how do you like it?
I have been here for 8 months and I like it a lot because it is cheaper and I can do a
lot of hiking here.
You mentioned to me that you visited many places in the world. Where have you
been?
I went to Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia , Malaysia, Japan, India, Nepal,
Germany, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Bangladesh, and my next trip
will be to Istanbul, Turkey. Singapore was my favorite because it was very different
than the other Asian countries.
What are your plans for after CESL?
My plan is to finish the whole course and take the Bridge program and after that I
want to go to the University of Arizona for a Computer Science major.
Do you have any hobbies you do in
your free time?
I like to bike, run, and kickboxing which
is my favorite thing to do when I am
free.
How does it feel to be around people
from many different countries?
When I arrived here to the US, I did not
expect to find that many people from
different countries. I only expected
Americans here. Now I feel great
because I know the cultures of many
people without even traveling. Interviewed by Ahmad Alhindawi

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Names: Meaad Assiri1, Fatima2, Futtoh Aleisa3, Karam4 Hometown: Saudi Arabia—Abha1, Al-Hassa2,4, Kuwait3
Level: 31,2,3,, Bridge4
Thanks for letting me impose on your coffee talk, what would you like to
talk about today?
All: Let’s talk about vacation!
Great, we can give everyone a snapshot of where you’ve all been.
Futtoh: Should I talk about Thailand or Egypt?
All: Thailand! Talk about somewhere different than home.
Futtoh: It’s very, very beautiful. There’s all these hotels. Also, there are many
different kinds of animals. And elephants! They have elephants there that are
used for many different things.
Did you ride an elephant?
Futtoh: No! I only like dogs and puppies. Thailand is also nice because you can
tan there, get a nice color. It has nice weather. It’s hot and always raining.
There, you can eat lots of delicious fruits and seafood. You can get lobster,
too. Wow (she raises her eyebrows in approval).
Karam, what about you?
Karam: I’ll talk about UAE (United Arab Emirates). When I went to Dubai, what I mostly liked was the zoo. It’s huge! There’s
no bad smell at all there and it’s very green. My hometown, on the other hand, is not green. It’s nice to experience something
different. In Dubai, I loved the fountain the most. With the view behind it, it’s like harmony. But in general, I don’t really like
Dubai.
Futtoh: Yeah, it’s crowded and too expensive. Expensive for nothing.
I can imagine. Fatima, you said that you visited Italy?
Fatima: Yes, in Italy, I visited The Colosseum. I also got to visit Venice and Florence. I really liked eating there, things like
steak and pasta.
Sounds delicious, what was your favorite moment?
Florence was my favorite part because it was a smaller city and quiet. This is opposite of my hometown.
Wow, that’s a dream. Meaad, what is a vacation that you’ve enjoyed?
Meaad: Turkey. It’s very nice. I went in the summer. It has many tourist attractions. The panorama in Istanbul is the same as
one from ancient times. The noises, all the things in the street, everything was like it was in ancient times.
Were there any dishes you enjoyed?
Meaad: Yes, it’s called a skandor kabob. It has sauce, tomato, and yogurt on top of the meat. It’s delicious.
Mmm. What was one of your favorite moments?
Well, it was my honeymoon, so the whole trip! We stayed in Uzungol which was a 2 hour plane ride from Istanbul. It was
paradise there. The village has lots of big trees with a big lake in the center. All the people were fishing. And there were no
cars. We would just walk to go wherever we wanted. You should go in the summer.
I definitely would like to go someday. Wow, you ladies are so well-traveled. Thanks for sharing your stories!

Ask CESL
Now that UA is smoke free, where CAN I smoke?
• Just to remind all of our students, the University of
Arizona (including CESL) is a tobacco free campus.
• People are NOT allowed to smoke on ANY part of the campus
(the area in blue), but must walk off of campus to smoke. The
area in front of and around CESL, like the rest of campus, is no
smoking. Please do not smoke around the building as it reflects
poorly on CESL and you as a person.
What if I would like to quit smoking?
• Quitting smoking can help
you feel healthier and live
longer! The University of
Arizona recommends you
try the free plan
BecomeAnEx which aims to
help you quit smoking.
• Other resources to help
you quit can be found
