Yet, beyond the myths and legends, bats are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem.
There are over 1,300 species of bats, ranging from the tiny Kitti's hog-nosed bat to the majestic flying foxes. These winged mammals are found in almost every corner of the globe, from the scorching deserts to the lush rainforests. Their diversity is a testament to their adaptability and resilience.
Bats are insectivores, feeding on a vast array of insects, from mosquitoes to beetles. A single bat can consume up to 1,200 insects in an hour, making them a crucial part of our pest control system. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER !4
Interviewer: Student Council Secretary Faris Alanazi
Faculty/Staff Member: Maria Corrales
F: What is your job at CESL? M: I am the Admissions Coordinator.
F: How many languages do you speak? M: I speak two languages- English and Spanish.
F: Where were you born? M: I was born in Costa Rica.
F: When did you come to the USA? M: Twenty-eight years ago.
F: What are three goals you have for the future?
M: I want to save money for my retirement, have my son graduate from school and save
enough money for that, and be able to travel a lot.
F: Where would you like to travel if you had a credit card with no limit on it?
M: I would like to go to Europe and Saudi.
F: Why do you want to visit Saudi Arabia?
M: Because I feel that the family orientation in Saudi is really similar to the family
orientation in my country.
F: True true, I’ve heard that before. That we have similar cultures.
M: Yes, it is really interesting.
F: Well, the next question is, how do you interact with new students at CESL?
M: I think it is easy for me because when I came to the United States I did not speak English,
so I had to learn while I was here. It was a challenge for me to understand native speakers,
so I was always trying to understand non- native speakers better.
F: How much time did it take for you to speak fluent English?
M: But I don’t think that I speak English really well, ha-ha.
F: Ha-ha I know what you mean, but your English is very good. What’s your secret?
M: Ha-ha, well, the only way was during work. Before I came here I was at home a lot and
that did not help because I did not have anyone to talk with. So when I started to work, I
worked at McDonalds. That helped me a lot with communicating with people. It was hard at
first cause no one could understand me. Communicating is like swimming, standing from the
edge of the pool you have to jump into the water right? That’s exactly what happened to
me.
F: What was the hardest challenge for you when learning English?
M: It was and it continues to be the accent. Because some people think that if you have an
accent you won’t make it.

F: How do you think you can learn the accent?
M: You have to know what you are saying and how to say it. And I think that the best way
to learn the accent, for example, is our Evening Program. They have pronunciation
classes with very good teachers that can teach you some tricks to pronounce some
words.
F: Do you like being around international students?
M: I love to work here; I like to work with international students.
F: How long have you been working
here?
M: Almost six years, and I’m planning to
stay here unless they want to kick me out
ha-ha!
F: ha-ha! I can understand that, loving
the idea of meeting new people and
discovering their culture.
M: Exactly, and as a Costa Rican, for me,
it is good to be here because you get to
know people.
F: What activity to think that is really
similar between Saudi Arabia and Costa
Rica?
M: When you try to communicate with
people far away from you, you realize that you are more similar to each other. Also, my
people and your people like gathering and staying in groups.
F: From your experience, if I want to learn English in a year and a half, what should I
do?
M: Well, as I said in my case I had to work because I did not have the scholarship for
school like you guys. But what I’m saying and what is the most important thing is to
expose yourself to the language.
F: Okay, so what would you like to share with CESL students?
M: I want to say that they really make me happy because every time I talk to you guys I
get to learn something new. Also meeting new people is my passion.
F: Okay, it was really nice talking to you Maria. M: Awesome, you too Faris!

PIL Tip of the Week
A student the other day asked us to give them some tips on how to improve memory.
Since memory is an important part of studying effectively, it is important to know how to
best use this part of the brain.
Here are some tips you can use to improve your memory when studying!
1) Review the material as many times as possible:
The more times you see what you want to memorize the better. Also,
if you review right before you go to bed, and then again when you
wake up in the morning, you will process the material overnight.
2) Organize the material:
Group the material into chunks of related ideas. Organizing the
material by concepts will help you see relationships and meaning.
3) Talk to yourself:
People may think you’re crazy, but this is a great way to activate
more senses when studying. If you hear the information, and don’t
just see it, you will be more likely to remember it. You can always
teach the information to a friend if you don’t feel comfortable
talking to yourself.
If you need more ideas on how to improve your memory, or any other study skills,

are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student
Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Name: Sultan Al Koblan Hometown: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Level:4
How is your session?
It’s ok. I studied here last session and this one is like the one before, so it’s good.
How do you like Tucson so far?
It’s bigger than I thought. When I first heard of it, I thought it was a small village. Since it’s
bigger I enjoy it more. Also the people are lovely.
How did you hear about the program at the University of Arizona?
I was searching for a good program in engineering. CESL was a good fit because the UA also does
conditional admissions.
What inspired you to learn English?
So that I can study at a U.S. university, hopefully here.
What is something about you that people might not
guess?
I’m only 19. Many people think that I’m older.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like to watch movies, especially comedies. I also enjoy
watching videos on youtube.
Are you going to go to the upcoming basketball game?
I don’t like sports that much but sometimes I enjoy them.
If there was one activity that you would like to do what would it be?
I would really like to try rock climbing.

Name: Faisal Alshareef Country: Saudi Arabia Level: 5C
How do you like Tucson so far compared to your country?
I have been here in Tucson for 1 month now, and I still don’t know that many
interesting places in this quiet city. It is a great environment for people who
want to come and study. Since I have been other places such as UK, it is much
different and there are less things to do. The people here treat each other
very well.
UK is awesome! When did you go and
how did you like it?
I went there two years ago for an English
program and stayed there for two months.
There are many places you can go there
and people are addicted to the real
football (soccer) which I love as well.
What do you have planned after CESL?
After I am done with CESL, I have a choice
of applying to any university our sponsor
(SABIC) allows. I want to go to a school in
Michigan and study Supply Chain
Management.
What do you miss most about your country?
The things I miss most in my country are my parents and the food such as
kabsah and arika which is considered a dessert.
How did CESL help you with your future goals?
My goal is to be an influential speaker when I get into supply chain
management, and CESL is helping me with my comprehension, vocabulary,
and speaking.
