CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER !5
PIL Tip of the Week
Have you ever sent an email to your teacher and never gotten a response?
There may be a good reason why. Email writing is a skill. If you do not know how
to write a good email, you will probably have a very difficult time trying to
communicate with your teachers and professors. Here are a few points to
remember before you send your next email!
1) Say hello! Don’t just start your email with a demand. Greet your
professor with Hello…. or Dear… Also make sure to call your teacher by
the correct name. The easiest way to do this is, Professor + their last
name.
2) Ask politely. You should always request things with a question. Instead
of saying, “Send me the homework assignment now,” you should say,
“Could you please send me the homework assignment?”
3) Use the subject line. Teachers are busy! They don’t have much time to
spend on sorting through emails. Use the subject line to quickly explain
what your email contains, rather than leaving it blank.
4) Sign your name. Your teacher will ignore your email if you don’t say
who you are.
5) Be formal. Emails are not text messages. Spell your words correctly
instead of using abbreviations (ex. You vs. u; please vs. plzzzzz).
Writing a good email takes time. You need to be polite, respectful, and clear.
Remember to also be patient when waiting for a response. Try following these
rules, and communication with your teacher will become easier and friendlier.
Below is an ideal example of what an email to your teacher should look like:

CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER !6
Every week we interview two CESL students. If you
are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student
Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Name: Rashed Alqahtani
Country: Al-Jubail Industrial, Saudi Arabia
Level: 6
How is the CESL experience so far?
I have been in CESL for 1 year now. I learned a lot from my teachers and from the activities staff—
especially Ahmad. Also, I made many new friends in CESL from many countries.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Poetry. I write poetry every night before I
go to sleep. I talk about what happens
everyday and I recommend people to read
my book of poetry in the future.
How different is your hometown
compared to Tucson?
There are many differences such as weather
and environment. Al Jubail is much hotter
than Tucson and the biggest difference is
that my parents and family are there and
not here.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to get my scholarship as soon as possible and attend U of A with my older brother. Then
I will major in chemical engineering with him. After college, I want to go back to my country and
work with my father.
What is your favorite saying?
Everything is okay in the end. If it is not okay, then it is not the end!
Interviewed by Ahmad Alhindawi

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Name: Joelle Hilgers Hometown: Krefeld, Germany Level: 6
Why did you decide to come to Tucson, AZ?
I came here because I wanted to become an au pair and my host family chose me.
What is an au pair?
My definition of an au pair is to be a good nanny, which means taking care of the children
and daily routines.
Do you like being an au pair?
Everyday I’m challenged because of my English.
Living in a different country without your family and
friends.
How long have you been an au pair?
I have been an au pair for 8 months.
Why did you decide to become an au pair?
I decided to become an au pair because I’m very
interested in different cultures, languages, and
people. I wanted to make my own experience and it
has been one of my desires since I was 13 years old.
What are your daily tasks?
My daily routine for the children is to get them ready for school, make them breakfast and
lunch, later pick them up from the bus stop, do homework with them and then take them
to their daily activities.
What are your plans after being an au pair?
I want to study and become a teacher for children with special needs.
Where have you explored around the US?
I have been to Florida, Nevada, California, and New York.
How is your session at CESL so far?
My session at CESL is fun but challenging at the same time. I like my classmates and my
teacher.
Do you have any advice for your fellow CESL students?
Have fun and make your own experience!

I decided to become an au pair because I’m very interested in different cultures, languages, and people. I wanted to make my own experience and it has been one of my desires since I was 13 years old. What are your daily tasks? My daily routine for the children is to get them ready for school, make them breakfast and lunch, later pick them up from the bus stop, do homework with them and then take them to their daily activities. What are your plans after being an au pair? I want to study and become a teacher for children with special needs. Where have you explored around the US? I have been to Florida, Nevada, California, and New York. How is your session at CESL so far? My session at CESL is fun but challenging at the same time. I like my classmates and my teacher. Do you have any advice for your fellow CESL students? Have fun and make your own experience! Interviewed by Anjana Sripal
