1. Meteorological discussions. : convection is not a warm substance rising, although it does, it is a lighter
substance being displaced upwards by a heavier substance which is heavier because energy causes the
substance to have more volume and therefore be less dense. The energy causes each particle to occupy
more space.
This might be important to consider when planning to harvest urban heat. In order to harvest the heat
island, it is likely that the wind turbines must be very accurately placed immediately in the area of
replacement air flow. It is not the rising air that is causing the wind, but the pressure of the air moving to
take its place. This means that any amount of distance away from the location will not have this wind.
Although the desired energy is in the rising air mass, the air below may have a low enough energy level
to cause the energy to transfer down to the replacement air, allowing for the effect to be such that the
heat island is harvested. The cycle of air flow will likely be slowed by harvesting, and harvesting will
likely have a unique energy and flow pattern.
Some concepts:
-air moving through a turbine that is removing energy from the air will have increased density and
reduced volume after harvest. This means that before the air is heated again, it will take much more air
to displace the warm air, possible slowing convection . ?
-The air will be heated again during parts of the day, because the sun is still out, traffic is still going, etc,
which will have an effect that might return the air to its normal flow patterns, or it might cause a higher
pressure zone directly over the city. I don’t know.
-Some of the energy in the heated air should conduct to the lower temperature air, which will be more
dramatically cooler after wind power harvesting, but it is still possible that much energy might escape
from the urban air-space in the upper atmosphere. This might cause a dramatic cooling effect in the
area of harvest, while having no effect on the heat that is travelling away from cities like it is today.
