The document reimagines the story of Mario Bros. in a future where a massive moon-based infrastructure called the "Superstructure" has been built. Mario and Luigi work as plumbers in the Superstructure's vast drainage system. They become embroiled in a rebellion against the upper classes and go on the run. They encounter strange new animals, including Yoshi, and work to stop Bowser's plan to destroy the Superstructure's energy system, which would endanger all its inhabitants. In the end, both Mario and Bowser sacrifice themselves to stop a flood and save the Superstructure, while Yoshi also gives his life to help them save the city.
1. The Legend of Super Mario
Bros. (revisited)
This is not the true story of mario bros. This is also not the alternate
story that I thought I remembered. This is a revisit on the concept with
some added concepts.
2. The Beginning
In the future of space exploitation and megaprojects, a visionary
investor teams with architects and engineers to result in the
"Superstructure", a megalithic structure to be populated slowly over
time, but with the fundamental building blocks of a massive, integrative
infrastructure. There was no pressing need to exploit the iron of the
moon and reachable asteroids, however by mining enormous amounts
of iron other resources would become available. The iron was
manufactured into a framework of beams, cables, and connectors that
was assembled into a massive, vacant moon-city. Over time, the
settlement filled with people of all varieties. Not always were all social
classes within the superstructure happy with the leadership and
objectives of the upper classes.
3. The Story
Among this society of unrest, the average person worked for an average wage in average
but sometimes desperately essential jobs, with the survival of the inhabitants
sometimes hinging on a single worker, such as a regular plumber. Mario and Luigi found
themselves in a desperate race to hide first from the police, then from the militant
unrest, leading them to be lost in the nether regions of an enormous drainage
infrastructure. There they encounter newly evolved animals they had never
imagined, including yoshi the dinosaur, who's uncanny sense of danger and loving sense
of loyalty first saves the Mario Brothers, then shows them how many people will die if
the Superstructure collapses, and finally pushes them to risk and ultimately sacrifice their
lives to thwart a plan by Bowser to backfire the energy systems of the superstructure
which would result in the virtual obliteration of everything. Using their skills as plumbers,
they move throughout the enormous high technology meshed with low technology
environment, reaching the very bottom of the world as well as the reaches of space, until
they finally lose Yoshi who sacrifices himself to get them into position to restabilize the
infrastructure, before they die along with bowser in a flood that is unavoidable if the
superstructure is to be saved, as there is nowhere else for the water to go, and only they
and Bowser would be where the flood would occur.
4. Why the moon?
• Mario and Luigi can really jump.
• The earth has plenty of iron, but launching it to space is extremely
expensive. However, the earth does not have enough rare-earth
elements. Even small amounts of such elements are worth
exploitation, if it could be reasoned to process enough material on
the moon. By building a future investment, the cost of such
seemingly needless iron processing can be justified.
• Although Earth will continue to develop, the moon will be an unusual
place, a place where the strangest things will simply be the norm.
