Pros And Cons Of College Admissions
When people start to look into colleges that they are interested in usually the first thing that they look for are the things that they must have to get into
that school. Most of the time we eliminate college from our lists just from knowing the cost of going there. Most people can't afford to get in without
scholarships and don't have the resources to obtain those scholarships. Another problem that many students have is a fear of tests, a lot of people
taking the SAT's and the ACT's get too stressed out on tests and can't focus, and with this they end up getting a score that doesn't really reflect what
they know. Many people just can't focus when it comes to a test room setting even if they know the information on that test. On page one of this article
it states that, "A new report released Wednesday and endorsed by more than 80 colleges and universities nationwide is recommending some stunning
changes in the application process, including possibly making standardized testing optional or lessening its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People from different backgrounds shouldn't have less of a chance to get into good schools just because of where they come from. New reforms for
admissions would not only benefit those with less opportunities but also students that can't get in for sports or academics alone. Another problem that
people have when they start to consider college is the idea that only the most elite schools are worth looking at when a smaller school or less well
known school might be a better fit for what they want out of life. You should pick where you want to go off to college by how well it fits with what
you want and need for yourself not what looks best on paper. No matter where you go you should be happy with it and go to do something that you
are interested in instead of just going for a job that pays well or one that someone else pushed you

College Admissions Essay College is a very important time in anyone's life. It's a time where boys and girls turn into men and women. It's a time
where people learn valuable life skills, and how to live on their own. Choosing the right college is an incredibly important decision. Colleges come in a
wide variety of shapes and sizes, specialties and strong points, as well as cultures and diversities. As a senior that will soon be on my way to a college is

For centuries, studying at a university has been a common notion that many young people aspired to. With time, this idea grew to become an expected
step in the lives of young adults. Regardless of how regular and expected this life decision may seem, the decision to attend a particular institution to
pursue one's postsecondary education is quite possibly the most important decision one will make in their early adulthood. However, these choices
and decisions are only as good as the information on which they are based. So what can schools do to make sure that they remain on the radar for
prospective students? More importantly, what can small private liberal arts colleges, like Salem College, do to compete with big name public ... Show

Each step in the system should involve some form of contact that has a "specific action–oriented, measurable task" (College Recruitment Practices,
n.d.). The goals in these systems can range from simply encouraging a campus visit early in the funnel process, to eventually attempting to get the
applicant to send in their confirmation. These thoughts can be communicated in a variety of ways, but studies show that there are certain methods of
communication that are much more effective. The most successful methods of contact are mail, telephone, electronic media, and personal contact.
However, an important note is that these methods of communication are only effective if they are made on the personal level and the prospective
student can feel the one–on–one connection building between them and the people at the institution. It is important for the process to individualized;
throughout the college search process students are likely to become cultured consumers as they filter through the massive amounts of information that
they are bombarded with–this can be very overwhelming and numerous studies and surveys have found that students are likely to ignore all forms of
communication that are not explicitly directed towards them, personally. The absolute most effective recruitment technique is for an admissions

Opportunities For College Admissions
Throughout my academic career there have been numerous opportunities granted to me. I have been fortunate to have taken all advance placement,
honors, and college courses that have been offered. By taking these preparatory classes I have achieved my High School requirements early and
earned the privileged to participate in programs such as New Visions andCollege Connections. These programs allow me to get hands on experience
in the field of study that interests me as well as help me obtain additional college credits prior to my freshman year in college.
Not only have there been multiple educational opportunities for me during the school year, but I also had the ability to do internships or summer
enrichment programs throughout my summers.

Essay On College Admission
Many colleges in the United States (U.S.) take a holistic approach in determining who to accept that will maintain or raise their status as an educational
institution. Colleges certainly look at one's intellectual ability through grades, standardized tests and essays, but one's involvement within a community,
social and economic background, and other social skills are also considered. The socialization throughout one's life is an important determinant in
getting accepted to a college. Applying to a college in the United States from Japan is a unique and uncommon option, but compared to other Japanese
students, I had many social factors that intentionally and unintentionally contributed to my college acceptances. At the same time, some aspects–the
distinct education and community of Japan–hindered my preparation for American colleges. Although I had limited resources compared to domestic
students, numerous social factors, such as the educational experience of my family and myself, the social and cultural capitals exclusive to me, and
the social forces of tracking and labeling of a wider community affected my chances of getting into college. The education history of my ... Show more

Admission Into College
It is an unfortunate reality of the 21st century that admission into college is no longer a natural and calm transition made by young students as they
enter adulthood. The pressure of competition for academic excellence escalates rampantly throughout high school and multiplies ten–fold at the
mention of standardized testing and college applications. It leaves students nervously exhausted by the time that the thought of college presents itself in
the first place. The unfortunate reality of the American educational system as of 2015 is that all students suffer from some degree of

These thoughts in turn yield anxiety because the ingrained beliefs in the necessity of a perfect academic track record stick in students' minds.
Typically, students are able fall back on emotional support systems that they build for themselves by focusing on their present selves and their passions
in a healthy manner. It is in becoming so focalized on securing their futures through immense effort at school that students forget to listen to their
mental needs as young adults, and they become far more vulnerable to school–induced anxiety in the absence of effective emotional support

Do College Admissions Properly Ensure the Future?
The future is always something many fear, and more so than others at different milestones of life. An example of this is when it comes time for college
admissions. Students around the world begin to question their worth through scores and grades. Is this how we want the future of America to be based
off of, rather than the content of someone's character? Test scores and grades aren't truly accurate to accept someone into acollege because test scores
can be inaccurate due to digital systems and databases, humans express themselves in actions, not numbers, and grades are more so a scale of
compliance.
Often, test scores can be glitchy and inaccurate. In our modern age, students take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These can be applied through submission of artwork and videos of performances or showcases. Universities look for students who can succeed on
campus to later bring revenue back from their success or bring in prospects. Colleges can't truly choose them if they judge a book by its cover. If we
judged some of our current world–shakers based on their academic success, we wouldn't acknowledge and appreciate some of the things we do today.
When a person pushes themselves to the next level of education, they deserve to be judged by their character and their human expression. Grades are
not enough to show someone's aspirations in life. Test scores are not enough to exhibit someone's aspirations in life.
Lastly, grades are often a scale of compliance on the teachers and student's parts. Although we like to believe everyone's education is equal, not
everyone has the same opportunities to set themselves apart or understand the material. Teachers that are ready to be on the job every day with the best
attitude are the ones that students latch on to and really want to learn from. Students that listen in class because the teacher is involving them and not
just giving the bare minimum, are the ones that stand out. Education standards should change to make sure that teachers are not only giving
information but planning how they give out information in an engaging

College Admission ACT, GPA, SAT, and writing ability are some major factors that Simpson college's admissions use when determining if a student
will be accepted or not. Like most other school students must meet certain recommendations in these areas to even get accepted. I think that a
student's ability to write should be the cornerstone of college admissions it allows the student to state their goals and values, can help be the
deciding factor in the admission process, and it can be an opportunity for the students to display information they have learned over the years. When
I was applying to Simpson, I felt the process was rather simple and easy. I don't remember any complications with applying. I think that applying to
college for me was very simple as I only applied to Simpson College, Iowa State University, Waldorf University, and Cornell College. All four of these
educational institutions had almost the same application process. From my experience, I believe that Simpson College has a simple application
process. Students must send in their high school transcript along with their ACT or SATscores and fill out the online application (First Year Students,

help expand education, hobbies, and activities. The online application asks simple questions to get most of the basic information about the student

The day of the ACT has come. I anxiously stumble toward an empty desk. The test proctor glares at me as we begin. The other test takers seem so

disclaimer, the above statements never physically occurred. However, nightmares like these seemed to plague my mind during my sophomore and
junior year. I knew very little of the ACT at the time; I knew that it lasted about four hours, and that it was a paramount aspect in mycollege admissions

Affirmative action seeks to rectify the past and current systemic oppression in American society to provide minorities with opportunities to succeed on
a level playing field. Although it was born out of the struggle during the Civil Rights Movement, affirmative action has gradually transitioned into its

Colleges might also look at creating a more diverse campus as a way to prevent those lawsuits, because if the media starts getting reports of there
being an overflow of white students at a college or university ran by a white man or woman, they look dubious, and just racist, but if they start
accepting more minorities into their school, spreading a little color over the campus, in a sense, then they look more appealing to applicants who
want that diversity in their dream school. Plus it shows good when schools are being taken to court for discrimination. If they show the statistics,
the numbers, of the racial diversity, then that builds on their case. If they show a pie chart and 75% of the chart is green, and green represents
white for example, then that makes the school look bad, ultimately allowing a jury to see a possibility of discrimination, but if it's near equal for
minorities and whites, etc. , then it's good for the school. Making their case more believable. Debacles like this may never end for years to come
because we need diversity in public places, without it, it would be like the Civil Rights era all over again, and we don't need any more violent protests

College Admissions Flaws
On top of exceptional students getting declined, prestigious schools are accepting less qualified students such as legacies, athletes, and minorities,
contributing to the flawed system. Rather than admitting students based on their potential to succeed and personal attributes alone, universities often
admit slightly inferior candidates in order to increase their diversity population and maintain a dedicated alumni. In A is For Admission, Michele

centered around the climax of college while at the same time, more and more students are unable to attend universities because of cost or rejection,
but this is a paradox. The more high schoolers work hard, the more high schoolers will get turned down to their dream schools, and the more the
college admissions process effectively become a lottery, leading to "many highly talented, brilliant, creative people thinking they're not" (Robinson).
The widespread college problem has no easy fix, nor does it have a single solution. Rather than working to fix the unfixable, adults must stop putting
such emphasis on the college pathway, and instead stress that there are other options. The future of the job world is unknown; there is no way to know
if an expensive college education is the right choice. College, with all of its flaws, is just one option in preparing for the future; it is not necessarily the
best. Therefore, the single word, "college," should stop dividing the academic from the non–academic or the successful from the unsuccessful, and
instead be considered a single path in an array of worthy

of reference, I realized I needed fraternity. I realized I needed camaraderie. I realized I needed to be a Whiffenpoof.
Early in my college career, I became disenchanted with the difference between what I needed college to be and what college had actually become.
Instead of camaraderie, I received mandates from college administrators who directed me to look at the students to the front, back, and both sides of
me, and then realize two of those four students would not survive their first semester of college. Instead of harmonious renderings from a place called
Mory's. I received dire warnings from faculty members who predicted a mass exodus of students from the pre–med curriculum and eventual acceptance
of only a few students into medical school. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I completed my latest poem and wondered if anyone else would ever read it, Lori Green quietly entered the back of the classroom and sat down to
recover from her own case of self–inflicted heartburn.
Anxious to get her mind off her cooking and curious as to why I was talking to myself, gesticulating, and appearing totally removed from terra firma,
Lori approached me. Realizing nothing more serious than poetry was the cause of my aberrant behavior, she introduced herself.
Hearing Lori speak to me was like something from one of my wildest fantasies. Lori was a downright, out–and–out, bona fide vision. She was tall and
had long, brown hair. Her dark, wavy hair perfectly accented a pair of deep brown eyes that appeared as magnetic fields from which I knew there
would be no escape.
Her voice was as soft as silk, and it seemed to slide through lips that managed to form all the right words in just the right way. She had a body that
was perfectly built for comfort, and legs that started somewhere in the stratosphere before subtly working their way back down to

The College Admissions Process
Too often, today's culture sends young people messages that emphasize personal success rather than concern for others and the common good (Konrath,
O'Brien,
& Hsing, 2011; Putnam, 2005; Putnam, 2014; Weissbourd & Jones, 2014). And too often the college admissions process
–a process that involves
admissions offices, guidance counselors, parents and many other stakeholders–contributes to this problem. As a rite of passage for many students and a
major focus for many parents, the college admissions process is powerfully positioned to send different messages that help young people become more
generous and humane in ways that benefit not only society but students themselves. Yethigh school students often perceive colleges as simply valuing

College Admissions Is Unconstitutional
Heidi Cruz believes that allowing race to be part of College admissions is unconstitutional. It is unconstitutional because people should not be judged
by the color of their skin but on the level of knowledge they contain. Only allowing white people into certain Colleges is unfair because both groups
have the ability to reach a certain level. She strongly believes that the education you receive should be decided on the work you have done and how
much effort you put into getting into a college. It seems wrong to have your future put to waste just because you are not white, just because you don't
have great opportunities or privileges. It is not necessary to judge students on their appearance, you can't just look at a colored person as if they were
nothing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Regents of the University of California Blake, "It upheld affirmative action, allowing race to be one of several factors in college
admission policy." In other words, race interfered with whether or not you got an education. Amendment 14 states, "...nor shall any State deprive any
person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law..." This proves that race deciding whether or not you get into a college is
unconstitutional because any person has the liberty of getting a good education. Skin color or race shouldn't be the key to your success. Life is about
succeeding and where you come from should not decide whether or not you get an education. The court can't just deprive someone of their education
just because the color of their skin isn't the same as the color of higher class

Growing up in Philadelphia, I am well acquainted with University of Pennsylvania and its campus. I am a frequent flier of Children's Hospital of
Philadelphia, so walking through the campus nearly every day, gave me some insight. I remember seeing students sitting and eating lunch on a giant,
broken button that is located in the middle of the campus, and I remember the beautiful red library that students would rush in and out of during finals
week. I sat on the button statue, and realized, "Yeah, I want to go here." From that day on, I was determined to enter your institution.
Now that I'm older, and I realize now that college isn't exactly something you can pick just from sitting on a statue on the campus, I did my research. I

give a positive review no matter how bad the school is, but what he said was somewhat relatable, he said, "It just feels right." During this past year, I
have been visiting many different colleges in the area, but your visit just stuck with me. I remember the Wharton School the most actually, because I
thought it was really interesting how the different business quads would name themselves after a world currency and compete with one another. I'm

There are several unique qualities that attract me to this specific undergraduate college: the various programs and majors it offers and the opportunity to

The school of LSA is the desired freshman college for me because they seek out students who are looking to tackle tough problems and to impact the

Graduation Speech : College Admissions
During a typical high school graduation, speeches are given by a select few, notable students. These notable students normally include the two students
who earned the highest grade point averages out of all the students in their graduating class – the valedictorian and the salutatorian. Imagine a
graduation, however, with no valedictorian or salutatorian speech. Imagine if there was no valedictorian or salutatorian. Imagine if there was no
distinction of students ' academic performance during commencement or during the process of college admissions. While it may seem like no big deal
– it may sound like a blessing when the length of a graduation ceremony is considered – the impact of a class ranking extends far beyond the privilege
of giving a speech on graduation day. Class rankings are a vital component of high schools, and eradicating them would be detrimental to both
colleges and students in many ways. Class rankings provide colleges with data needed for evaluating applicants. Some colleges have a plethora of
applicants and need a simple way to narrow the pool down, while others use the information for awarding scholarships. Knowing that a student
pushed himself or herself to be the best makes the process easier. In a study of 2,175 high schools by the National Association of Secondary School
Principals (NASSP), it was found that "the 1,109 college admissions officers who responded to the survey said class rankings are among the four most

Admissions plays a large role in the American system of higher education. From the time high school students cross the threshold of adolescence, they
are prepped to become "well–rounded" applicants in order to please colleges and give the student a chance at admission. But what exactly is the
American admissions system based off of? It's not the black and white world that college applicants hope it will be, with all qualified applicants earning
a place at any given university. Instead, the world of admissions is one of many different colors and dimensions that require some exposition into their
wants and needs for students. Throughout this particular attempt to shine some light on the admissions process and background, the differences of elitist

It is quite easy to see that all the admissions frills and promises from the other forms of colleges have been washed away by necessity. For example,
the Athens Tech websitre doesn't have any calls for adventure, just like they don't advertise any minimum SAT scores or grade point averages
(Admissions Athens Tech). The community college simply tells people how to apply with no extra attempts to draw in specific students, because they
are deeply rooted in the idea that, if the people need job retraining, they will come to us, because that is the community college's primary purpose. It is
not exclusive in anyway, letting in students from all walks of like, high school students, high school dropouts, adults, etc. and offering them the
possiblity of simply training them for regional specific jobs or letting them gain college credit before they move onto a larger institution. This results in
community colleges disregarding the idea that there is a certain student that they are looking for, they simply allow to get the education that they feel is
vital to them and their career, which makes admissions into community college the antithesis to that of liberal arts colleges, because the college offers
education to as any as possible, not on the critirea of what can they bring to the institution, but how can the institution serve the students in the best way

College admissions are simple. They check your GPA and ACT/SAT test scores and see if your scores match their expectations. If you do, they

Having legacy students at the institution will greatly benefit UW by receiving donations from them. With colleges and universities becoming
businesses, "the high rate of monetary support by legacies and their parents is viewed as crucial" for that institution to be financially sound and
successful. Moreover, "over three–quarters of legacies have a parent with a high–status occupation, compared to about 62% of students with college
degree parents and less than one–third of students with no degree parents." This means that the parents of legacy students are usually wealthier than
non–legacies. This also means that with wealthier parents, the chance of a donation or donations to that college or university is most likely to
substantially increase. Moving on, "legacies arrive on campus forming a distinct status group that is characterized by an abundance of economic,
cultural and social capital." With economic capital, they are more likely to participate in activities and spend more money. And it is what colleges or
universities desire, more money. By partaking in college or university activities, the student will grow fonder of it later on and might donate to support

The Competition For Admission Into College
The competition for admission into college can be extremely tough, and a gap year, especially a mandatory one, can lead to even greater competition
than before. When searching through application upon application, universities tend to look for students who have "passionate involvement in a few in
or out of school activities" as well as "out of school experiences including work, community service, youth organizations, religious groups, etc." (IECA,
1). Many universities look out for not only a student's GPA throughout theirhigh school years, but also the extracurriculars and experiences the student
has gone through in order to find the handful of applicants that are deemed the "cream of the crop." By adding the mandatory gap year for all students
to the educational system, the students who are aiming to be accepted into the top universities of the nation will essentially have another year of school
to go through because of their need to have their college application look the most polished and unique out of all the others. Yet a vast majority of the
applicants will have similar–looking application forms because of the actions they are all taking to appear as the best. However, that specific "king of
the hill" type mindset is what creates the cookie–cutter applicants many universities face today, and the arrival of a mandatory gap year could magnify
the problem with more and more students trying to outshine each other in the fight for the top. Gap years allow students to

Is The College Admissions Standards? Essay
It's Hard to be Accepted The college admissions standards in America today are more rigorous and in depth than they have ever been but can also be
somewhat unfair. The process of applying can be quite stressful for students and parents alike as they try to successfully weave their way through an
expansive application that includes everything from essays to transcripts and so much more. And while the feeling of being accepted leads to true
exuberance because of all that hard work (as I can personally attest to), the feeling of being denied can rival it in intensity without a doubt (as I
unfortunately can also confirm). As college becomes more and more encouraged in high schools across the nation, and as the number of college
applicants continues to grow there will continue to be more of those students who are not accepted to a certain school, granted there is a place for
everyone. But this phenomenon brings up a simple question; why? Students are left to ponder why they didn't receive admission in many cases, as
no college that I know of gives an actual reason as to why acceptance was granted or denied. Luckily we do have some information supplied by
schools and other various sources on what factors are the most important to schools. While we may not like all of what we find when taking a closer
look, it is still interesting nonetheless. Let us first take a look at what students must go through to give themselves a chance to meet the admissions
standards at

I agree with the Harvard's proposed changes to the college admission process. Today, people are putting a lot of emphasis on grades, test, and other
extracurricular activities. I believe this is not the most important thing we should be worried about. The stress is becoming greater and students are
having higher expatiations about the ACTs and SATs. Also, the idea of emphasizing on the community involvement is a great way for colleges to
receive a diverse student body. With the stress of ACTs and SATs, it is hard on us, students. Students are having less time to worry about being a kid
and more time worry about grades and test. The article talked about teachers having high expectations for students grades, and they need to pull back on

Pros And Cons Of College Admissions

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of College Admissions When people start to look into colleges that they are interested in usually the first thing that they look for are the things that they must have to get into that school. Most of the time we eliminate college from our lists just from knowing the cost of going there. Most people can't afford to get in without scholarships and don't have the resources to obtain those scholarships. Another problem that many students have is a fear of tests, a lot of people taking the SAT's and the ACT's get too stressed out on tests and can't focus, and with this they end up getting a score that doesn't really reflect what they know. Many people just can't focus when it comes to a test room setting even if they know the information on that test. On page one of this article it states that, "A new report released Wednesday and endorsed by more than 80 colleges and universities nationwide is recommending some stunning changes in the application process, including possibly making standardized testing optional or lessening its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People from different backgrounds shouldn't have less of a chance to get into good schools just because of where they come from. New reforms for admissions would not only benefit those with less opportunities but also students that can't get in for sports or academics alone. Another problem that people have when they start to consider college is the idea that only the most elite schools are worth looking at when a smaller school or less well known school might be a better fit for what they want out of life. You should pick where you want to go off to college by how well it fits with what you want and need for yourself not what looks best on paper. No matter where you go you should be happy with it and go to do something that you are interested in instead of just going for a job that pays well or one that someone else pushed you ... It's a time where people learn valuable life skills, and how to live on their own. Choosing the right college is an incredibly important decision. Colleges come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, specialties and strong points, as well as cultures and diversities. • 3. Marketing and College Admissions For centuries, studying at a university has been a common notion that many young people aspired to. With time, this idea grew to become an expected step in the lives of young adults. Regardless of how regular and expected this life decision may seem, the decision to attend a particular institution to pursue one's postsecondary education is quite possibly the most important decision one will make in their early adulthood. However, these choices and decisions are only as good as the information on which they are based. So what can schools do to make sure that they remain on the radar for prospective students? More importantly, what can small private liberal arts colleges, like Salem College, do to compete with big name public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each step in the system should involve some form of contact that has a "specific action–oriented, measurable task" (College Recruitment Practices, n.d.). The goals in these systems can range from simply encouraging a campus visit early in the funnel process, to eventually attempting to get the applicant to send in their confirmation. These thoughts can be communicated in a variety of ways, but studies show that there are certain methods of communication that are much more effective. The most successful methods of contact are mail, telephone, electronic media, and personal contact. However, an important note is that these methods of communication are only effective if they are made on the personal level and the prospective student can feel the one–on–one connection building between them and the people at the institution. It is important for the process to individualized; throughout the college search process students are likely to become cultured consumers as they filter through the massive amounts of information that they are bombarded with–this can be very overwhelming and numerous studies and surveys have found that students are likely to ignore all forms of communication that are not explicitly directed towards them, personally. The absolute most effective recruitment technique is for an admissions counselor to visit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Essay On College Admission Many colleges in the United States (U.S.) take a holistic approach in determining who to accept that will maintain or raise their status as an educational institution. Colleges certainly look at one's intellectual ability through grades, standardized tests and essays, but one's involvement within a community, social and economic background, and other social skills are also considered. The socialization throughout one's life is an important determinant in getting accepted to a college. Applying to a college in the United States from Japan is a unique and uncommon option, but compared to other Japanese students, I had many social factors that intentionally and unintentionally contributed to my college acceptances. At the same time, some aspects–the distinct education and community of Japan–hindered my preparation for American colleges. Although I had limited resources compared to domestic students, numerous social factors, such as the educational experience of my family and myself, the social and cultural capitals exclusive to me, and the social forces of tracking and labeling of a wider community affected my chances of getting into college. • 7. Admission Into College It is an unfortunate reality of the 21st century that admission into college is no longer a natural and calm transition made by young students as they enter adulthood. The pressure of competition for academic excellence escalates rampantly throughout high school and multiplies ten–fold at the mention of standardized testing and college applications. It leaves students nervously exhausted by the time that the thought of college presents itself in the first place. The unfortunate reality of the American educational system as of 2015 is that all students suffer from some degree of admission–induced anxiety because high school is an environment that fosters in students an overwhelming and constant consideration for their futures, and it is part ... • 8. Essay On College Admissions Do College Admissions Properly Ensure the Future? The future is always something many fear, and more so than others at different milestones of life. An example of this is when it comes time for college admissions. Students around the world begin to question their worth through scores and grades. Is this how we want the future of America to be based off of, rather than the content of someone's character? Test scores and grades aren't truly accurate to accept someone into acollege because test scores can be inaccurate due to digital systems and databases, humans express themselves in actions, not numbers, and grades are more so a scale of compliance. Often, test scores can be glitchy and inaccurate. In our modern age, students take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These can be applied through submission of artwork and videos of performances or showcases. Universities look for students who can succeed on campus to later bring revenue back from their success or bring in prospects. Colleges can't truly choose them if they judge a book by its cover. If we judged some of our current world–shakers based on their academic success, we wouldn't acknowledge and appreciate some of the things we do today. When a person pushes themselves to the next level of education, they deserve to be judged by their character and their human expression. Grades are not enough to show someone's aspirations in life. Test scores are not enough to exhibit someone's aspirations in life. Lastly, grades are often a scale of compliance on the teachers and student's parts. Although we like to believe everyone's education is equal, not everyone has the same opportunities to set themselves apart or understand the material. Teachers that are ready to be on the job every day with the best attitude are the ones that students latch on to and really want to learn from. • 9. College Admissions Officers College admissions officers say the worst essays they read on college applications are self–absorbed recitals of high–school achievements: the what–I–learned–by–working–so–hard–a s–yearbook–editor essay, the I–went–to–Europe–and–learned–how–complex–the–world–is essay and the how–to–solve–world–hunger–and–all–the–other–world–problems essay. The best essays, the officers say, are those that reveal something about the author's personality. They often do it in an originial way, and, usually, read like an entry from someone's diary. Describing what he looked for, one admissions officer said, ''I want to see what makes someone tick.'' • 10. Graduation Speech : College Admission College Admission ACT, GPA, SAT, and writing ability are some major factors that Simpson college's admissions use when determining if a student will be accepted or not. Like most other school students must meet certain recommendations in these areas to even get accepted. I think that a student's ability to write should be the cornerstone of college admissions it allows the student to state their goals and values, can help be the deciding factor in the admission process, and it can be an opportunity for the students to display information they have learned over the years. When I was applying to Simpson, I felt the process was rather simple and easy. I don't remember any complications with applying. I think that applying to college for me was very simple as I only applied to Simpson College, Iowa State University, Waldorf University, and Cornell College. All four of these educational institutions had almost the same application process. From my experience, I believe that Simpson College has a simple application process. Students must send in their high school transcript along with their ACT or SATscores and fill out the online application (First Year Students, n.d.). I feel the main purpose of the application is to see how the student will fit in at Simpson and learn the possible interests of the students in order to help expand education, hobbies, and activities. • 12. Essay On College Admission I have learned a great deal both through formal and informal education up to this point and am thrilled to embark on my next stage of development. I really see the college search a lot like music. There are a plethora of options out there, but it is a very personal choice which one is right for you. Some like rock, others like pop, but no matter what genre speaks to you most, the favorite choice speaks to people deeply and inspires them tremendously. When I looked at the campus of New Jersey CityUniversity I knew my heart was singing for me to go there. • 13. College Admissions Narrative The day of the ACT has come. I anxiously stumble toward an empty desk. The test proctor glares at me as we begin. The other test takers seem so calm, with their #2 pencils lined up neatly on their desks. All I have are #3 pencils! Even worse: I have showed up to the test in my underwear! As a disclaimer, the above statements never physically occurred. However, nightmares like these seemed to plague my mind during my sophomore and junior year. I knew very little of the ACT at the time; I knew that it lasted about four hours, and that it was a paramount aspect in mycollege admissions process. The thought of those four hours intimidated me, to say the least. I had no idea what to expect. I felt helpless, I felt anxious, I felt unprepared. Wisconsin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Writing a good essay requires diligent planning, writing and proofreading; the ACT requires all of the above completed in thirty minutes. After a little bit of practice, a watch, and a couple #2 pencils, I was ready to take on any sort of timed writing with ease. The essay preparation from Wisconsin Test Prep continues to help me with my time management during SAT and AP timed writings. Most importantly, the practice test administered at the end of the class allowed me to experience a realistic ACT environment, and to ready myself for the three and a half hours of critical thinking and rapid circle marking. I was more than a little anxious before the practice exam; I may have understood the concepts, but application of those concepts was its own beast to conquer. They require a minimum of 3.5 un–weighted GPA and a 600 on all of the sections of the SAT to qualify for applying (Montgomery Scholars Admissions). College Admissions Flaws On top of exceptional students getting declined, prestigious schools are accepting less qualified students such as legacies, athletes, and minorities, contributing to the flawed system. Rather than admitting students based on their potential to succeed and personal attributes alone, universities often admit slightly inferior candidates in order to increase their diversity population and maintain a dedicated alumni. Furthermore, the admissions process itself has its flaws–legacies, minorities, and athletes are being chosen over exceptionally gifted valedictorians. Even after college, the problems do not end; possible joblessness and student debt are unavoidable. On top of these major problems, educators and parents continue to convince kids everywhere that college is the only option to become successful, and choosing another path is heavily looked down upon. The newest generation's life is centered around the climax of college while at the same time, more and more students are unable to attend universities because of cost or rejection, but this is a paradox. The more high schoolers work hard, the more high schoolers will get turned down to their dream schools, and the more the college admissions process effectively become a lottery, leading to "many highly talented, brilliant, creative people thinking they're not" (Robinson). The widespread college problem has no easy fix, nor does it have a single solution. • 34. The Legacy Of College Admissions College admissions are simple. They check your GPA and ACT/SAT test scores and see if your scores match their expectations. If you do, they will take you. If you don't, they will reject you. What about if your score is in the middle? What if you don't quite meet their expectations, but you don't really fall below them? Legacy is like a tiebreaker or the cherry on top of the cake, but currently is a very controversial topic. Being a legacy student can cause a significant impact on the admission process. It also gives you a huge advantage over non–legacy students. Being a legacy student has the potential of getting you admitted into the college that you want, even if you don't meet all the requirements. UW should take legacy into ... Not that universities and colleges only do this for money, they also do this for tradition, better reputation, loyal students, and an overall appreciation for the college of the university. Having legacy students at the institution will greatly benefit UW by receiving donations from them. With colleges and universities becoming businesses, "the high rate of monetary support by legacies and their parents is viewed as crucial" for that institution to be financially sound and successful. Moreover, "over three–quarters of legacies have a parent with a high–status occupation, compared to about 62% of students with college degree parents and less than one–third of students with no degree parents." This means that the parents of legacy students are usually wealthier than non–legacies. This also means that with wealthier parents, the chance of a donation or donations to that college or university is most likely to substantially increase. Moving on, "legacies arrive on campus forming a distinct status group that is characterized by an abundance of economic, cultural and social capital." With economic capital, they are more likely to participate in activities and spend more money. And it is what colleges or universities desire, more money. By partaking in college or university activities, the student will grow fonder of it later on and might donate to support the institution. In the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Competition For Admission Into College The competition for admission into college can be extremely tough, and a gap year, especially a mandatory one, can lead to even greater competition than before. When searching through application upon application, universities tend to look for students who have "passionate involvement in a few in or out of school activities" as well as "out of school experiences including work, community service, youth organizations, religious groups, etc." (IECA, 1). Many universities look out for not only a student's GPA throughout theirhigh school years, but also the extracurriculars and experiences the student has gone through in order to find the handful of applicants that are deemed the "cream of the crop." By adding the mandatory gap year for all students to the educational system, the students who are aiming to be accepted into the top universities of the nation will essentially have another year of school to go through because of their need to have their college application look the most polished and unique out of all the others. Yet a vast majority of the applicants will have similar–looking application forms because of the actions they are all taking to appear as the best. However, that specific "king of the hill" type mindset is what creates the cookie–cutter applicants many universities face today, and the arrival of a mandatory gap year could magnify the problem with more and more students trying to outshine each other in the fight for the top. • 37. Is The College Admissions Standards? Essay It's Hard to be Accepted The college admissions standards in America today are more rigorous and in depth than they have ever been but can also be somewhat unfair. The process of applying can be quite stressful for students and parents alike as they try to successfully weave their way through an expansive application that includes everything from essays to transcripts and so much more. And while the feeling of being accepted leads to true exuberance because of all that hard work (as I can personally attest to), the feeling of being denied can rival it in intensity without a doubt (as I unfortunately can also confirm). As college becomes more and more encouraged in high schools across the nation, and as the number of college applicants continues to grow there will continue to be more of those students who are not accepted to a certain school, granted there is a place for everyone. But this phenomenon brings up a simple question; why? Students are left to ponder why they didn't receive admission in many cases, as no college that I know of gives an actual reason as to why acceptance was granted or denied. Luckily we do have some information supplied by schools and other various sources on what factors are the most important to schools. While we may not like all of what we find when taking a closer look, it is still interesting nonetheless. Let us first take a look at what students must go through to give themselves a chance to meet the admissions standards at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. College Admission Process Analysis I agree with the Harvard's proposed changes to the college admission process. Today, people are putting a lot of emphasis on grades, test, and other extracurricular activities. I believe this is not the most important thing we should be worried about. The stress is becoming greater and students are having higher expatiations about the ACTs and SATs. Also, the idea of emphasizing on the community involvement is a great way for colleges to receive a diverse student body. With the stress of ACTs and SATs, it is hard on us, students. Students are having less time to worry about being a kid and more time worry about grades and test. The article talked about teachers having high expectations for students grades, and they need to pull back on their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
