This document reflects on a course book evaluation assignment. It discusses how course books can be useful teaching supports if the activities align with lesson objectives and meet the needs of different learners. While course books are helpful tools, the best teachers adapt activities and do not rely solely on the book, instead using it selectively to enrich lessons. The focus should be on the lesson itself, not just following what is in the book.
1. Course book Evaluation Reflection
This assignment was related to materials at the moment of teaching. One of the
most relevant is the course book, since it can be such a useful support in a lesson. This
particular assignment was significant for me because it helped to understand how
efficient is the materials teachers use in order to put what is being taught into practice.
Regardless the type of material being used, teachers must ensure that the activities
contained in the book are coherent with the objectives of each lesson, the type of
learners it was made for and how activities help the process of learning. Besides, I
learnt that if certain activities do not suit the type of learners, teachers can adapt
these activities in order to make them more appropriate for students.
It is remarkable to say that teachers using a course book in an efficient and
appropriate way have got a strong tool in their hands; however, there are some
teachers nowadays who tend to rely a lot on the course book to the point where they
do not know what to do without one. In my opinion, this is completely wrong, because
as seen in class, the course book should be considered a supermarket, which means,
selecting carefully what is necessary from it for enriching our lessons. Moreover, I
strongly believe that the sense of the class should be mainly focused on the lesson
itself, not in a book.
