Key changes <ul><li>Changes in location away from the old coalfield sites where coal was used to power traditional industries </li></ul><ul><li>Many of the traditional heavy manufacturing industries such as steel and iron have declined in importance and been replaced with light assembly manufacturing industries, such as electronics. </li></ul><ul><li>Changes in technology have resulted in many of the old traditional methods of production being overtaken by robots and computer controlled production. This has resulted in a reduction in the labour force. </li></ul><ul><li>A large number of overseas manufactures have been attracted to the UK, particularly in areas offering government assistance. </li></ul><ul><li>There has been an overall decline in the numbers employed in manufacturing as the UK moves to a more tertiary – based economy. </li></ul>
