There are three main coloring methods for fabrics: direct coloring, coloring through chemical reaction, and dispersion coloring. Direct coloring only dyes the surface of a fabric and does not bond strongly to fibers. Coloring through chemical reaction uses conditions like alkalinity and lack of oxygen to allow dyes like indigo to react and change color. Dispersion coloring involves heating fibers to open them and allow disperse dyes, the only dyes insoluble in water, to enter and dye polyester and acetate fibers from within.
