1. The representation of
Race
different social groups
The fact that we have used a young, white, British male
in our opening sequence may attract mostly a British
audience. The audience will be able to relate to the
character easily even considering that the location
belongs to the ethnicity of the characters as well as the
audience. Other aspects of the opening sequence such as
the sound track, will also give the impression that the
film is British considering that it is sung in a British
accent.
Class and Status
We can judge from the location, house and the way
the character is dressed, on their class and status.
Firstly, the fact that the character is dressed properly
and covered well as well as the fact that he wears an
expensive looking watch, we can gather that he is
fairly wealthy. We also know this because the
protagonist lives in a fairly big, three story house.
Towards the end of the opening sequence, we see
that the character is emptying a bag of money out
suggesting that he makes a good amount of it. The
question of whether the character is of a high status is
ambiguous considering the conventions of both crime
and thriller genre films. The protagonist could either
be born in a good background or from a poor
background having learned how to make money in
illegal ways. This could be easy to believe by the blood
being washed down the sink which was supposedly
from his hands.
2. Age and Gender
Considering that the audience chosen for the
film is mostly males of 15-25, a young
character is used in this opening sequence
which makes the audience capable of
relating to him. There are elements of British
gangster in this opening sequence and one
thing which gives it away is the age of the
character. We have decided to create a
character that is young with a mysterious
quality which creates enigma for the
audience.
