2. What is the Rosalin Technique?
• The Rosalin Technique is a type of cloning
• The Rosalin Technique is a variation of somatic
cell nuclear transfer that was developed by
researchers at the Rosalin Institute
• A somatic cell nuclear transfer is a laboratory
technique to create a clone embryo with a donor
nucleus
3.
4. What has it been used for?
• It has been used to create Dolly
• Dolly was a sheep and the first mammal to be
cloned by the Rosalin Technique
• She has been called “the world’s most famous
sheep”
5. How They Created Dolly
• The Researchers first took mammary gland cells
from a Finn Dorset Sheep
• They then took those cells and grew them in
tissue culture
• The tissue culture lets the scientists change the
characteristics of the cell
• They made sure that the cell didn’t have the
nutrients it needed so it didn’t grow and divide
6. How They Created Dolly Cont.
• Researchers then took the nucleus out of an
unfertilized egg from a Scottish Blackface ewe
• They injected the nucleus from the original
mammary cell into the unfertilized egg

photo-human-egg-cell.html
7. How They Created Dolly Cont.
• They used a small spark of electricity to fuse the
nucleus to the cytoplasm
• The electricity also helps the cells to become
more likely to divide

shock/
8. How They Created Dolly Cont.
• The new cell was then put into a Blackface Ewe
• The whole procedure was repeated 276 times
• After 148 days Dolly was born!

9. Dolly Facts
• Before the researchers at the Rosalin Institute created Dolly
no animal had ever been cloned using an adult egg
• Dolly was born on July 5, 1996 and died on February 14,
2003
• She died from a lung disease

14. Ethics
• The Rosalin Technique is a very controversial
subject
• Some scientists think that it is a good thing,
because it helps with the advancement in science
• Some people think it is not ethical and is “playing
god”
