CINQUAIN POEMS
A cinquain poem is a verse of five lines that do not rhyme. The cinquain poem was
created by Adelaide Crapsey.
What is the structure of a cinquain? A cinquain consists of five unrhymed lines. Each line
has a set number of syllables as seen below:
• Line 1: 2 syllables
• Line 2: 4 syllables
• Line 3: 6 syllables
• Line 4: 8 syllables
• Line 5: 2 syllables
Or with grammatical details:
• One noun
• Two adjectives
• Three gerunds (words + ing)
• A short sentence.
• A one-word summary
An example of a Cinquain poem made with the previous descriptions:
• Woman (2 syllables, One noun)
• Sweet and Happy (4 syllables, Two adjectives)
• Working, laughing, loving (6 syllables, Three gerunds)
• She is so beautiful and kind (8 syllables, A short sentence)
• Mother (2 syllables, A one-word summary)
Now, design your own Cinquain poem with a partner. You can choose to do the one with
the numbered syllables, the one with grammatical details or both as the example above.
