The Welcoming
Genre
The genre of my movie is horror. The reason I have chosen horror is
that I feel the conventions of horror are easy to follow and I myself are
quite enjoy horror movies so I feel that my passion for horror movies
may enable me to make convincing trailer and movie.
Narrative Structure
My narrative structure will be based around Todorv’s theory. Todorov
suggested that the story begins with an equilibrium and this equilibrium is
then disrupted by an event, thus setting off a chain of events. He suggested
that there were 5 stages to this theory:
 • An equilibrium- My characters have moved into a new house together
,which is in relatively poor condition due to the fact it has been
unoccupied for many years due to horrific circumstances.
 • A disruption of the equilibrium- Strange things start to happen in the
house which scares certain members of the house but doesn’t others ,
this then leads to arguments occurring between the friends and further
complications arise. They start to see strange things such as weird
   figures in the dark.
 • A recognition of the disruption- Start to find out information about the
house and what previously happened there and allows them to draw
conclusions about why strange things are happening.
 • An attempt to repair the disruption-They start to try and resolve the
problem by leaving but it doesn’t help as they are unable to escape.
 • A reinstate of the equilibrium- Certain
Characters
Hero: Is named Isabelle. She is going out with Ryan.
Villain: Is a demonic being who is haunting the characters house
Helper: Is named Simon and is the younger brother of Isabelle. He is
partial to taking drugs and drinking. Some what of an outsider.
Donor: Is named Ken and provides the group with information about
the previous residents and is the best friend with Ryan.
Dispatcher: Isabelle’s Father.
Princess: Is called Ryan. He is one of the lead players for his football
team and his very logical thus meaning he causes most of the
arguments.
Father: Is named Jenny. She goes out with Ken but is kind of a
promiscuous girl and act very flirtatious towards other male characters
and this leads to arguments.
False Hero: Is named Oliver and tries to resolve the problem but fails to
, resulting in his death.
My USP
I don’t really have a USP as my movie is rather conventional and follows
the narrative of many other movies recently produced. However I hope
to entice males by having an attractive protagonist and throughout the
movie she will be dressing in a proactive manner. I may also be able to
entice female viewers as I hope to have a stereotypical male character
and by that I mean one that is rather strong and strong looking and an
attractive face.
Although my USP may be that I have subverted the conventional story
of having a male saving a female I have chosen to have the female
saving the male and the male character being the “princess”. Another
USP will be that the movie will be shown like a recording , this will be
similar to Paranormal Activity.
Target Audience
My target audience is likely to been young adults who are aged
between 16 -24. The reason I believe this is the audience I’ll attract is
due to the fact all the characters I’ve chosen are of a similar age so it
may allow them to relate to the characters more and thus making the
movie more believable to them and therefore making the horror seem
more horrific.
I am hoping to have both attractive male and female protagonists as it
may enable me to draw more attention to the movie, however this may
be more important when trying to produce the movie poster.
I am also hoping to attract audiences who prefer ghost and demons
(possession) rather than movies consisting of brutal, gory killings.
Therefore meaning they are likely to be more intrigued by movies that
make them jump, which is what I am hoping to produce.
Feed Back
Getting feedback from my fellow peers , allowed me to develop
my narrative more and give my narrative more depth. They also
offered suggestions to shot types I could use such as over the
shoulder shot. They also suggested the way in which I should
film and present my movie as before I was contemplating two
different options. And finally if not one of the most important
aspects of any film my peers helped me think of the title of my
movie. This feedback was extremely useful as it has allowed me
to have a better idea and understanding of what I was doing.
