An Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and a former chairman of Tata Sons. He was also
chairman of Tata Group, from 1990 to 2012, and again, as interim chairman, from October
2016 through February 2017, and continues to head its charitable trusts.He is the
recipient of two of the highest civilian awards of India, the Padma Vibhushan (2008)
and Padma Bhushan (2000).

India.

After his parents separated in 1944, he was
brought up by his grandmother Lady Navajbai and
did his schooling in Mumbai from
Campion School.
Later, he enrolled in Cornell University,
where he earned aB.S in architecture with
structural engineering in 1962, andhas also
completed theAdvanced Management Program at
Harvard Business School .
•Ratan tata is single and leads a modest lifestyle in his
bachelor apartment.
•The US-Educated bachelor lives alone with his two
German Shepherds.
•He sometimes like to fly his private jet himself.
•Some people call him “THE STEVE JOBS OF INDIA”
 When he returned to India in 1962 afterturning
down ajob with IBM on the advice of JRD, he was
sent to Jamshedpur to work on the shop floor at
Tata Steel.
 In 1971, he was appointed the Director of National
Radio and Electronics(Nelco).
 In 1981, JRD Tata stepped down asTata Industries
chairman,naming Ratan as his successor. He was
heavily criticized for lackingexperience in running a
company of the scale of Tata Industries.
 In 1991, he was appointed group chairman of the Tata group.
 Under his stewardship, TataTea acquired T
etley, Tata motors
acquired JaguarLand Rover andTata Steel acquired Corus, which
have turned Tata from a largelyIndia-centric company into aglobal
business, with 65% revenues coming from abroad.
 In 2009, Tata launched the world’s cheapest Car Nano. For
just1 lac rupees.
 He is widely credited for the success of the Tata Group of
companies, especiallyafterthe liberalization of controls afterthe
1990s.
 Ratan Tata retired from allexecutive responsibility in the Tata group
on December 28th 2012 which is also his 75th birthday and he is
succeeded by Cyrus Mistry.
