Music Education Essay
Education is the foundation that our entire society is built on. Without education, society could not
grow and prosper. Without education, we wouldn't have things like electricity, plumbing, or any
other common amenities that is present in our society today. Education is important to not only the
children receiving it, but to their parents and members of the community as a whole. Education is
offered to many in U.S. thanks to public education, and laws that say children must be in school
until they are six–teen. Education incorporates not only the four main subjects people usually know,
which are science and math, english, and social studies, but music education as well. Music

The fact that music incorporates all these different subject areas is just one reason why it helps in
other subjects. Music affects children in many ways. Children who study music have a larger
vocabulary and better reading skills than students who do not study music. This helps them improve
their essay writing, which is an important skill to have in high school and college. Studying music
also helps the brain comprehend speech when there is noise or other distractions going on. This
means that there is an even greater benefit to music education for kids with learning disabilities or
children who lose focus easily. Music education also affects the way a persons brain comprehends
the human language. This allows students to have an easier time learning a second language, which
is now a very important skill to have when applying for jobs. Another benefit is that students who
study music have a higher level of self–esteem, and are therefore more confident around others and
more willing to express themselves personality wise and they are more willing to express ideas they
have. They are also then more willing to work as a team. Schools with music programs have, about,
a twenty–seven percent higher graduation rate and a nine percent attendance rate than schools

Listening During A Rehearsal And Performance
Listening during a rehearsal to detect errors and interpret musical details is an essential skill when
teaching instrumental music. Conductors must correct note and rhythmic errors while also making
artistic decisions about dynamics, style, articulations, and other musical elements. Teaching students
to create characteristic tone quality, balance, and blend adds to the complexity of these musical
elements. Score study is one way directors establish an internal aural image, later attempting to
recreate this picture in rehearsal and performance. Ideally, score study helps create a mental sound
image or "musical landscape" (Battisti & Garofalo 1990, p. 3). Directors may often find that
teaching students to evaluate mistakes and self–correct is a difficult task. One of the goals of an
effective rehearsal is error detection and correction. Many studies have researched the
characteristics of teachers effective in this area of practice (Brand & Burnsed, 1981; Cavitt, 2003;
Crowe, 1996; Forsythe & Woods, 1983; Waggoner, 2011). In a descriptive study, Cavitt (2003)
found several traits that were common among educators with strong error detection skills. These
included (a) persistence in correcting the problem, (b) repetition, (c) brief talking and modeling, (d)
modeling occurred frequently, (e) high rates of specific feedback, (f) identifying the problem before

What Is A Musician?

This weeks musicianship lecture with Dr. John Williams brought an interesting question to light:
'what is a musician?'. It is not a point I had ever given thought to before and my immediate answer
to this question was 'someone who plays and performs for a living.' However, that answer seems
restricted and inadequate as I would by no means claim that those who play instruments simply for
enjoyment are not musicians; even including, since the growth of technology in music, those who
don't play an instrument such as DJs or rappers. The dictionary definition is "a person who plays or
composes music, esp as a profession," but I would now say that anyone who can be said to be

Genres like punk rock and disco were a bi–product of a changing generation who were breaking
boundaries faster than any generation before. We envision the 60's–80's as an era epitomised by
outrageous fashion statements, blatant use of drink and drugs and a generally rebellious, reckless
attitude to life. I find myself linking this to films like The Boat that Rocked, which, whilst possibly
not being completely accurate, seem to capture and portray that restless, rebellious spirit very well.

This week the lecturer discussed the origin of polyphony and the word. Researching this further I
came across a paper in which the author, Joseph Jordania, argued that polyphony was not a
development of monophony, but was, in fact, an ancient and important part of our evolution. I find
this fascinating, as I had always assumed that music and polyphonic singing were a bi–product of
evolution – certainly not influencers of it.
Euphony, on the other hand, throws up the question: "if the words aren't clear how can the music
relate to it's function?" This shows that evidently the words rather than the music were important to
the Catholic church, but does this mean that the musical side was then almost dispensable? What

Unity in Bach's Cantata No.78
According to Rowell, "Musical composition became much longer, and composer were forced to
evolve new means of maintaining unity and continuity over long time spans" during the Baroque
period. Therefore, the texture of music became very important. When I look at the musical texutre
of the Cantata No. 78 by J. S. Bach, I realized that this piece was unified very well within a
movement and as a whole piece by many techniques. Some of those techniques were found in the
text, and the others were in the music.
First of all, the text is well organized in terms of its unity. The piece has seven movements.

As a length of piece gets longer, a composer needs to come up with more techniques to maintain
unity. In case of the first movement, which is 144 measures long, Bach uses the technique of
"variation over the common bass line." The common bass line is a descending cromatic phrase. At
the beginning of the movement, this phrase is played by the continuo part. After it is repeated twice,
the oboe takes over the phrase. Then, when the voices start singing, they begin with a short
descending cromatic phrase. This descending cromatic phrase is played by different instruments at
different time, and sometimes it disappears, but it always comes back in the music until the end of
the movement. By composing variations over this descending cromatic phrase, Bach keeps the unity
of the longest movement among the whole Cantata No. 78.
At last, the first movement and the last movement have a very strong relationship to keep unity as a
whole piece. One of the two factors is that the melody from the last movement is sung in the several
parts of the first movement. In the first movement, soprano always sings at the end of the phrase
without any repeated word from the text. The melody of the soprano line is always the same melody
as the last movement, and the soprano sing the melody in the same order as it sung in the last

on from 17:00 until 22:00 and my schedule during weekends is 10:00 until 22:00. As said
previously I can dedicate at least 2 hours daily to the server, unless I'm in massive family issue,
school finals, vacation, etc. Though, it is safe to say that most of the time I 'm not busy. How long

merged with Skyblocky. However, I wasn 't particularly active on Skyblocky until the 21st of May.
Why do you play Minecraft? Well.. I was firstly introduced to the game when I saw my mates
playing it too back in 2010. However, I wasn 't particularly active until Mojang released their
Multiplayer phase. Back to the main point, I tend to play Minecraft as I find it delightful when
playing. Socialising with users is probably the main reason I 'm still playing as It 's the primary

With programming skills, I finished a number of projects, whose success facilitated me to continue
on my work. For instance, I celebrated my ten–year–old birthday party by successfully constructing
a program that could either produce or solve sudoku puzzles. On that day, the program gave me a
puzzle, and solved the puzzle itself. I considered this gift as more memorable than any other one. In
my high school, I made a software that helps us reciting English vocabularies by a technique similar
to flashcards. The advantage in efficiency makes it better than the latter. The software, for example,
supports data importing while flashcards do not. In addition to the improvement of manual
efficiency, the software expressed a strong enhancement of the users ' speed of reciting words, aka.,
the effectiveness. It was based on the forgetting curve proposed by Hermann Ebbinghaus, which
quantifies the interval between each repetition of memorizing process. I made a little adjustment to
the values, and set them as the time intervals between the repetitive appearances of a word. In this
sense, the word repeats again and again, and deepens the memorization every time. The
memorization becomes very deep using this strategy. I made a comparison between the efficiency of
reciting vocabularies using the traditional methodology and using this program. The result was that

This system helped composers use special symbols, called note names, to indicate a generalized
system of music notation. These note names and durations were based on a system known as the
Guidonian Hand, which is said to have been developed by Guido of Arezzo. This system is based on
individual notes within a hexachord system, that can be identified unanimously by combining the
names of all the various solemnization syllables that each symbol could sustain. The hand helped
create a universal notation system that was used by all. Now composers from around the area could
use the invention of musical notation to write a composition using universal note names. Along with
the rise of composers writing their own names on their manuscript, this created the last component

The audition requires young musicians to prepare a solo piece, scales, orchestral excerpts, and to
sight read a piece of music at the time of the audition. After auditioning, it will be determined by the
conductor of the specific group whether or not one's skill level meets the level of the group. The
Memphis Youth Symphony offers a myriad of opportunities throughout the season for young
musicians to connect and highlight their talent as a whole. There are four annual concerts along with
several other events that allow students to acclimate into the community, while also enjoying a
valuable learning experience. The Memphis Youth Symphony is a large discourse community with
over 200 students from schools all across the tri–state area–I set out to conduct pertinent research to
efficiently support my analysis of The Memphis Youth Symphony discourse community.

In order to understand The Memphis Youth Symphony's discourse community more analytically, I

I was auditioning for one of Mr. Kentros ' choirs. I stood in the hallway nervously–as always–
Rachel was there practicing for her audition, which was after mine. I 'm ready for this. I can do it!
Coby came out of his audition with a giant smile on his face. He put his hand on my shoulder, "have
fun, and good luck!" I took a deep breath as I walked into the choir classroom. Mr. Kentros was
sitting at the piano with sight reading papers in front of him, there was a chair next and a music
stand next to the piano for whoever was auditioning. He had his water bottle in one hand and a

Music, cultures and societies all around the world are highly diverse. However, a common challenge
that each society faces is how to preserve their own identity – how to pass down the music cultures
and traditions from generation to generation. It is important to realize that music cultures are not
static. Evolution and being dynamic is part of what it means to be human. But from one generation
to the next, societies around the world need to be able to pass down certain foundations for the next
generation to learn and build upon. Chronologically, all music cultures started with a predominantly
oral method of transmission. However, in the last few centuries, there has been a prominent shift
towards written methods of transmission. Music and the way that it is transmitted from one
generation to the next can tell us a lot, not only about the societies of the world but also the role that
music plays in them. By analysing a shift in the transmission styles of music from oral to written,
we can see music transform from being a transcendental experience to being a product for
replication.

Usually, this was a solely hereditary practice from one parent to their child and so on (Werbock).
This allowed music and music culture to be integrated into every member of a particular society.
Similar to diffusion in biology, the child soaks in all aspects of the music culture from his/her
parents without even consciously meaning to. Music is not an isolated art and with oral transmission
it cannot be. For example, in India, music is part of a bigger all–encompassing ideal called Sangeet
(Scaruffi). Sangeet includes music but also dance, drama and more. The main focus of Sangeet is

A brief essay on two influences on musical notation in the middle ages
Modern musical notation as we know it can be directly credited to the Catholic Church. The
Catholic church being a primary influence in Western history, the church had many resources and
was source of education. While there are a variety of rudimentary music notations pre 9th century
the foundation of music notation as we know it is due to an Italian Benedictine monk, Guido de'
Azzero, who invented solfege, a vocal scale we know as do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do but was
introduced as ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la. This scale was a huge breakthrough for vocalists that were
struggling to learn new chants in the late 900's but has had a lasting effect as this is the same scale
vocalists use today. Along with this he introduced the four line staff, a fifth would be added as music
became more complex. Now vocalists could read the pitch, and learning new pieces of chant

Even without any musical experience, there are certain chord progressions, or series of notes that we
can expect to determine what the next note or chord will be. For instance, in the music section of my
Perceiving the Performing Arts class, our Professor made the class, consisting of musicians and
non–musicians, sing the next chord that he was going to play and we all successfully did. Just like
with language, in a simple sentence we can assume the next word. Like in this sentence "the piano is
out of __," we expect the next word to be "tune." This is because there's some kind of neural

Our auditory cortex rejoices. It has found the order it has been looking for" (Lehrer). This statement
is explained by a study that a musicologist, Leonard Meyer, does. In his study he analyzes one of
Beethoven's compositions, the String Quartet in C–sharp minor, Op. 131, 5th Movement. Basically,
Meyer analyzed fifty measures of this composition which demonstrated the way Beethoven
composes his music and why his compositions are so great. Meyer finds that "begins with the clear
statement of a rhythmic and harmonic pattern and then, in an intricate tonal dance, carefully avoids
repeating it...He wants to preserve an element of uncertainty in his music, making our brains beg for
the one chord he refuses to give us. Beethoven saves that chord for the end" (Lehrer). After
composing a short piece with predetermined chord progressions, I can agree that waiting until the
end for the final harmonic completeness after some set of notes makes it very satisfying. When I'm
beginning to learn new long pieces for piano, it takes some time for me to reach to the end. So
because of that when I'm done practicing, I have to make that incomplete section that I played feel
complete. It's like when we watch a TV show. After one really good cliffhanger episode, you have

experience as being a staff member: Prismarine Prison: On prismarine I started off on this server as
the position of Admin, after long hours of server work and helping the community in general the
other owners agreed to bump my position up to co–owner! I was very excited at the time but after a

Music Is All Around Us
Music is all around us. At the start of the 21st century, technology in industrialised societies
provides us with easy access to a vast amount of recorded music. We can listen to our favourite
music at home, in the car, on the train; on home stereos, personal stereos, and through our
computers. We are also often surrounded by music which we have not chosen, at the shops, waiting
for a train, even at the doctor's.
Research is beginning to show how music has the power to change the way we feel, think, and
behave. We know that music can lift our mood, and certain kinds of music can temporarily boost
specific kinds of intelligence. Listening to our favourite music can even help us tolerate high levels
of pain.
What do we know about how young children engage with music? There has been quite a lot of
research looking at the very early years. We know that babies can remember music from even before
birth. My own study with the Child of Our Time group in 2001 showed that exposure to a particular
piece of music before birth had long–lasting effects, as the babies seemed to prefer listening to that
music up to 15 months after birth. Other studies have explored the features of maternal singing,
showing how this can make the baby feel calm.
There are also studies of babies' responses to music in the lab that show them to be really very

Singer and composer, Susan Botti, studied music at a rather young age. Her musical training
officially started when she entered the Cleveland Institute of Music as a high school student
(Slayton 54). She then graduated with a bachelor of music degree from Berklee College of Music
(Boston, MA) in 1984 (Slayton 54). Once graduating from Berklee, Botti continued her studies at
the Manhattan School of Music (New York, NY), where she received a master of music degree in
composition in 1990 (Slayton 54). In 2000, she received an offer as the associate professor of music
composition at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Slayton 54). While at Michigan, she taught
with William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty and Bright Sheng. In 2007, Susan Botti left her position
at Michigan to move back to New York City, and began teaching, as a member of the composition
faculty, at the Manhattan School of Music (Slayton 55). Susan Botti's Echo Tempo, is a double

Every time I hear about famous composers, like Bach or Mozart, the names themselves put me to
sleep quicker than any anesthesia ever could. So, it was no surprise that I absolutely dreaded the
idea of seeing a piece written by any of these composers. I attended Mozart's requiem at the Seattle
symphony, I grunted at the idea of paying $38 for something I wasn't even interested in. How dare
they charge an absurd amount for something that was written before time itself? I took my seat and

Audio signal processing has been a very active research area. Automatic piano music transcription,
of all the tasks in this area, is an especially interesting and challenging one. There are many
examples of how this technique can contribute to our life. For instance, in today's music lessons and
tests, we often rely on people's hearing ability to judge whether a piano player performed well based
on whether the notes played are accurate or not. The process requires man–power and is not always

2. Existing Approaches
In this section, we will discuss what has been done in this area of unsupervised music transcription.
Undoubtedly there are different aspects to this task. And different ways and techniques are used in
attempt to solve this problem efficiently and accurately. In an effort to provide a clear picture of
what has been done, we will categorize different approaches based on technique used.
The classic starting point for the problem of unsupervised piano transcription where the test
instrument is not seen during training, is a non–negative factorization of the acoustic signal's
spectrogram [1]. Most research work has been improving on this baseline in the one of the
following two ways: better modeling of the discrete musical structure of the piece being transcribed
[2,3] or by better adapting to the timbral properties of the source instrument [4,5].
Combining the above two approaches are difficult. Hidden Markov or semi–Markov models are
widely used as the standard approach to model discrete musical structures. This approach needs fast
dynamic programming for inference. To combine discrete models with timbral adaption and source
separation, it would break the conditional independence assumptions that dynamic programming

warm–up is thought of as getting the juices flowing, whereas vocal skills are developed through
teaching singing strategies. Choir teachers need to have a variety of vocal exercises in their bag
because not every exercise will work for every student. The exercises used within a vocal warm–up,
work to build proper posture, breathing, phonation, resonant tone production, range, agility, diction,
expression, aural acuity and sight–reading skills. The best example I can think of between the
differences in a vocal warm–up and developing vocal skill is sight reading. A vocal warm–up is
something that anyone is able to do no matter how much vocal training they have had. A person that
has had no musical training would not be able to warm–up on sight reading because they have never
read music. This student may be able to create proper posture and do vocal exercises but they would
not be able to sight read. A student that has been in an ensemble will have learned to sight read and

PGTAOSA Reflection Paper
For my PGTAOSA workshop requirement this semester, I decided to go to a eurythmics workshop
lead by Stephen Neely from Carnegie Melon University. This Workshop took place on Saturday
February 13. Right at the beginning of the workshop I was surprised by the number of people in
attendance. There were at least 25 total people there and only about 8 of them were from Duquesne.
I could tell a large number of people had not had very much experience with eurythmics because

Music Recital Report
On the 7th of April, I had the pleasure of attending a music recital performed by Indiana State
student Yurie Uto. The official title of the performance was simply "Senior Recitle". Throughout the
recital, Ms. Uto played six musical pieces while masterfully using the French horn. All of the songs
were purely instrumental and she was also accompanied by a grand piano, guitar, and other French
horns during the performance. Although she seemed slightly nervous early on, by the end of the
night, Ms. Uto seemed undaunted as she played her instrument with masterful skill. The venue
utilized for the performance was the Recital Hall at Indiana State University. Which, in my opinion,
was a great choice for its convenient size and impressive ability to clearly project the music to fully
benefit the ears of the audience. For clothing, Ms. Uto dawned formal attire while her
accompanying performers varied from formal to casual. The programs that were handed out gave
historical information on each piece of music that was played. With information on when it was
made and why some pieces were played the way they were; giving the audience some insight on
what to expect. Surprisingly, we the audience did not only receive musical programs, but also, a
small verbal program of Ms. Uto herself. Before her performance, Ms. Uto was given an informal

Analysis Of The Simple Meter By The Solmization
1. For the examples in the simple meter, the solmization could be briefly divided into two groups.
The first group focuses on the metrical positions. Each beat in the measure is either spoken as
numbers or specific syllables, and the subdivisions are either specified with distinct different
syllables (e.g. the third and fifth one) or not as precisely defined (e.g. the forth one). The second
group focuses on the duration of the notes, as seen in the last 3 examples. The sixth example assigns
a specific syllabus to a rhythmic value, while the seventh is a little more vague on that, while it has a
better ability to emphasize strong beats as the quarter note gets the "ta" and "ti" lies on accented
moments most of the time. The last one which uses well–known words makes use of the natural
speech rhythm to perform the job of the syllables in the sixth and seventh example.
The examples which emphasized note value still operate in the same way as simple meter when it
comes to compound meter, but the others show more variations in thoughts. The first example
counts the subdivisions as the basic unit. In this case, instead of thinking in meter, it acts more like
the "ti–ri–ti–ri" method which focuses on the duration of the notes. The ones which still focuses on
the meter (2,3,4,5,8,9) still make use of the syllables to subdivide the beat. Example 2 and 4
specifies each subdivision up to the sixteenth–note level, while others are not as precise. For

Death Schone Magelone By Ludwig Tieck
"Sind es Schumerzen, sind es Freuden"("are they sorrows or are they joys") is a song from Brahms'
song cycle Romanzen aus L. Tieck's Magelone, Op. 33 No. 3. As text for his song cycle, Brahms
chose excerpts from the novel Die schöne Magelone by Ludwig Tieck (1773–1853). The novel tells
a love story between Peter von Provence and Magelone, the king's daughter. In this particular song,
Peter and Magelone falls in love with each other. Though Brahms is most widely known as an
instrumental composer, more than half of his opus numbers are devoted to vocal works. In Brahms'
song cycles, he avoided the traditional strophic forms. Instead, he chooses dramatic shifts in music
material, unpredictable harmonies, and sudden changes in tempo and rhythm.
The song starts with an unusually long piano introduction that lasted 8 measures, gives an idea of
the large scale of this song. The rolled chords (mm.1–8) and broken octaves underneath the
beautiful melody suggesting Peter's lute. The vocal line begins with the expressive melody identical
to the beginning of the piano introduction. It is characterized by embellishments on words "sind" (to
be), "busen"(bosom) and "wünsche"(desire). Emphasizing Peter yearning for Magelone's love. The
second stanza is set to the same music as the first stanza, and Brahms even indicates this with a
repeat sign rather than notating the music twice. The harmony of the verse ends on a half–cadence
but the chords at the last measure are not rolled, (mm.20)

  • 38. Music Recital Report On the 7th of April, I had the pleasure of attending a music recital performed by Indiana State student Yurie Uto. The official title of the performance was simply "Senior Recitle". Throughout the recital, Ms. Uto played six musical pieces while masterfully using the French horn. All of the songs were purely instrumental and she was also accompanied by a grand piano, guitar, and other French horns during the performance. Although she seemed slightly nervous early on, by the end of the night, Ms. Uto seemed undaunted as she played her instrument with masterful skill. The venue utilized for the performance was the Recital Hall at Indiana State University. Which, in my opinion, was a great choice for its convenient size and impressive ability to clearly project the music to fully benefit the ears of the audience. For clothing, Ms. Uto dawned formal attire while her accompanying performers varied from formal to casual. The programs that were handed out gave historical information on each piece of music that was played. With information on when it was made and why some pieces were played the way they were; giving the audience some insight on what to expect.
