• There are two activities that retailers
  undertake to develop knowledge, skills, and
  abilities
• Those Activities are:
  – Selective Hiring
  – Training
Selective Hiring
• Hire the right people
  – Job requirements and firm strategy dictate the
    type of people hired
  – Don’t hire people based only on the best and
    brightest
Training
• 60% of retail employees have direct contact
  with customers
  – Correct and effective training is IMPORTANT!
  – These employees are responsible for helping
    customers satisfy their needs and resolve their
    problems
The Key To Success
• Instill a sense of ownership with employees
  – Doing so translates into them taking
    responsibility for how the company operates
    and how it performs
• Invest in employees
  – Provide them with proper training
  – In depth knowledge makes the job more
    fulfilling
