Business Cards Are NOT Dead
You’re walking through the grocery and you run into an acquaintance. You strike up a conversation about your
business, and he wants to talk to you more about a project you may be a great f or. He wants your contact
inf ormation so you reach into your wallet/purse and you grab… An old receipt to write your phone number and
email address on. Really?!? Business cards are NOT dead! Where are yours?!
Shhhhh… I’m guilty of this myself . I’ve torn pages out of my notebook to
give people my contact inf ormation. But that was a thing of the past.
Thanks to the boxes of business cards I have at my disposal I have no
reason to look un-prof essional when giving the contact inf ormation f or my
business.
If you don’t have a business card designed I have to ask – Why?
Do you think the design will cost too much or be more than you can handle?
Do you think you won’t have a reason to have them?
Do you think the production costs will be too much?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, I want to prove you wrong!
Design Costs: Sites like f iverr, 99Designs, Mycroburst, and Sutton Creative Studios (yea, I had to include us
– hey, it’s our blog!) make it extremely easy and af f ordable to have custom logos and stationary packages
designed f or a nominal charge. And by nominal, I’m talking under $200 f or the complete design package. Please
note, however, that the less information you provide about the design you want, the more difficult,
and thus more expensive, it will be for a completed project. That’s why Sutton Creative Studios brings
every logo and design client on with an intake f orm and (inf ormal) interview.
Reasons to Have a Business Card: Prof essionalism, Ref errals, Prof essionalism again… Let’s f ace it – Even
kids designing websites out of their college dorm room get f ree business cards on Vistaprint. Why, then,
wouldn’t you want to have a card? I can’t tell you how many times I have picked up or passed out business
cards with the f ull-knowledge that the card was going to a third-party.
Not everyone uses LinkedIn, people! Business cards are the non-electronic LinkedIn!
Production Costs: Don’t even spend a second thinking about production costs. Why? Use this example: Dave
and I just got 1500 business cards (total) f or about $35 on Vistaprint. Yes, there was a sale. But while you’re
waiting f or that next sale get your cards designed!
Business Card FAQ’s
Q: Do I need to include my address?
A: With so many companies operating on the web, mailing addresses are quickly being removed f rom business
cards. When you pass out your card you don’t need to be worried about a complete stranger showing up at
your home of f ice when you’re still in your pajamas. Leave it of f .
Q: What should I include on my business card?
A: Your name, title, business name, logo, email address, phone number and f ax number (if you have one).
Q: What should I give my designer?
A: Your logo f ile (if already designed) in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop f ormat is a great start. **Any graphic
designer you hire should ALWAYS provide the source f iles at the completion of the project.** In addition,
building a Pinterest board showcasing business cards you like and then sharing with your designer will also
be helpf ul.
