Powhatan Wars
When the British settlers arrived on the Powhatan territory, the Indians did not see them as a threat, it was a mutual relationship. When the Powhatan
realised that the British's intention was to own the land, conflict aroused as the Indians do not believe in man owning land. The British suffered an
Indian attack in 1607, two weeks after the British arrival, but the Indians were fought off with weapons such as muskets and cannons. This was the
start of the Powhatan wars. The Powhatan were a nomadic tribe who spoke many different languages (Source 2). The Powhatan Chiefdoms Population
was about 25 000 which included 30 Algonquian speaking tribes–each with its own chief. The Powhatan Indians homeland was called ''Tsenacomoco''

Essay On Early Jamestown Settlers
Before the colony of Jamestown first rooted its foundations in the swampy, disease–ridden James riverbanks of Virginia in 1607, the Pamunkey tribe of
Native Americans had already gathered a century of knowledge and expectations of the would–be English conquerors that settled Jamestown. However,
the Jamestown settlers proved an unexpected rival for the Pamunkeys and their powerful emperor Powhatan, and a force he could not have reckoned
with based on his early information. Both the English and Native leaders met on the James with somewhat condescending assumptions about each
other that led to a long history of wary truce and mutual prosperity as well as vengeful rivalry and all–out war. About a century before the arrival of

Although incompetent and struggling at first, and expecting to rely on the natives for food and assistance in their settlement in their early years, the
English still expected to overpower the Pamunkeys eventually; an event they saw as an inevitability due to their rapid expansion as a colony. They
expected a thriving and powerful community of natives upon their arrival but also knew they had the superior weapons and technology. The English
wanted to keep their advantages of a surprising lack of assistance and superior military force, and they trained with weapons in secret to avoid the
Indians gauging their true potential for danger.
As one can imagine, the assumptions on both sides that the other party would be easily dominated and controlled was grounds for an unstable yet
mutually beneficial relationship at the best, and an all–out bloody fight for survival at the worst. At first, the demand for trade in furs, gold, and pearls
in Europe as well as the Pamunkeys' demand for glass beads and useful tools allowed for a truce lasting for two years that was strengthened by John
Smith's and Powhatan's leadership capabilities and mutual

Raleigh's Journey To The New World Analysis
Winter has shadowed upon us but as a nation that has gone through generations even centuries living through these conditions and knowing how to
sustain and live through it. However, not every land is the same, not every soil has the same nutrients to make crops flourish, and not every climate
alike.
In the late 1500's the Spanish and the French had claimed a large portion of the New World, however the East Coast was left unclaimed. Therefore in
1584, Sir Walter Raleigh asked our Queen Elizabeth I if he could have the honor of setting sail to the New World and claim new territory for England.
She then issued a charter allowing Raleigh to discover, search and find out about the alien terrain. Thus, Raleigh gathered approximately 100 men to

His main goal was to establish the first permanent English settlement in the New World by developing an economy and agriculture. They also found it
important to build a peaceful relationship with the Indians. White believed survival in the New World was to live peaceful in coexistence with one
and other. For a while both the English colonist and native Algonkin people (the tribe that inhabited Roanoke) were living cohesively. In November,
1587, White sailed back to England to report to the Crown on behalf of the colony. However White was unable to return toRoanoke Island for over two
years due to the Spanish Armada that attacked England. Once the war was over and England won against the Spanish, when he went back to the

Pocahontas's Effect On The People Of Jamestown
Did you know that Pocahontas isn't just a Disney character? Pocahontas was born around 1595 in what is now North America, but no one knows
exactly when she was born. She was the favorite daughter of Chief Powhatan's, but her mother is unknown. She helped many people, including the
people of Jamestown. John Smith and John Rolfe, citizens of Jamestown, affected Pocahontas' life greatly. Pocahontas helped the people of Jamestown
survive through their first winter; she brought them food and told them when the Native Americans were going to attack. Throughout most of her life,
Pocahontas lived in Tsenacommacah. She learned to do the many things most young ladies did, such as foraging for food and firewood, farm, and build
thatched houses. Pocahontas was known by more than one name. Matoaka and Amonute were two of her names. Pocahontas was her casual name,
meaning 'playful one'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ocean. Finally, he went back to Jamestown, where the people had become sick and couldn't find food. Through the winter and spring, Pocahontas

Chief Powhatan Speech Rhetorical Devices
Chief Powhatan's speech was delivered in 1609 written to Captain John Smith and the white men with him. Powhatan was considered a strong and
powerful leader who wanted the best for his people. The reason of this speech is that Chief Powhatan is near the end of his life and is concerned
about their relationship when his concessor takes place. To convey his message about peace his uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos
as well as literary elements. Powhatan uses pathos to attach or persuade Captain John Smith with sentimentality to reach out to him on a more
personal level. He wrote " I am growing old and must soon die." this helps by making Captain John Smith feel concerned about Powhatans years of
life left, making him feel pity. Another example of pathos would be "Why should you take by force that from us which you can have from love?".
Here you can see how Powhatan is trying to convince and make a point of how peace is easier achieve than what it appears to be. ... Show more content

This particular rhetorical device is used to share your personal standing or opinion about the matter .For example when Powhatan said "In such
circumstances, my men must watch, and if a twig should but break, all would cry out, "here comes Captain Smith"". Here hes trying to emphasize
how instead of fearing him, he would like to establish peace. The last rhetorical device used to convey his point is logos. He uses rhetorical questions
to make him realize how peace could be established and how it can be avoided as well. Examples would be "Why should you take by force that from
us which you can have by love?" and " Why should you destroy us who have provided you with food? What can you get by

Pocahontas Compare And Contrast
In the movie doesn't Pocahontas look like she is in her twenties, but is she really? She may look and seem like she is at least in her twenties but,
really she is not. In John Smith's "The General History of Virginia" she is actually only eleven or twelve. The movie makes it seem like she is older;
it just seems like a little too much of over exaggeration. When thinking about the fact of how old Pocahontas is does it bring up the thought if she was
only eleven or twelve then, how old was John Smith? In that case John Smith was nineteen years old in the movie, in real life he was twenty–seven.

Pocahontas Compare And Contrast
Many people know the story of Pocahontas, but how much of it is true? Pocahontas was a Native American princess who was one of twenty–seven
daughters of Chief Powhatan, the leader of the Powhatan tribe. Disney has produced a film based on the life of Pocahontas; however, it has been
debated how closely this fiction movie has stayed to its history. Though reality and the children's movie share many similarities, they also differ in
many ways.
Pocahontas has been portrayed in many different ways in both history books and fiction films. For example, in the movie Pocahontas and John Smith
were pretty close in age, young adults; however, in actuality, Pocahontas was a child probably around eleven and Smith was probably around
twenty–eight. Another

Pocahontas. What is thought of when that name is mentioned? For some, she was an Indian princess. For others, she was an Indian peacemaker.
However, for many, she was an Indian savior. Pocahontas is one of those people that historians don't know much about. She never left us any
documents written by her. However, there are a few things written and drawn by others that paint a picture of this extraordinary girl's life and legend.
Pocahontas was a Native American girl who put her life in danger to save a foreign alien, known by most as John Smith.
Not much is known about Pocahontas. However, historians have discovered some facts about her. Most importantly, Pocahontas was not her real name.
It was just a nickname. Her real name was Matoaka. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The whole tale starts when John Smith was captured by Opechancanough, Powhatan's brother in 1607. After Smith was taken to many Powhatan towns,
he was taken to Chief Powhatan. As Smith tells it, "Having feasted [me] after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation was held, but
the conclusion was, two great stones were brought before Powhatan: then as many as could laid hands on [me], dragged [me] to them, and thereon laid
[my] head, and being ready with their clubs to beat out [my] brains, Pocahontas, the King's dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevail, got [my]
head in her arms, and laid her own upon [mine] to save [me] from death."* After the presumed execution, Powhatan told Smith he was part of the tribe.
When Smith returned to Jamestown, Chief Powhatan sent food to the settlers, who were struggling to survive. Accompanying the Indians sent to the
settlers with the food was usually Pocahontas. In the winter of 1608–1609, Powhatan decided to stop trading with the settlers. After Powhatan and his
family moved into the woods, Pocahontas came to Jamestown to warn Smith that her father planned to kill him. After Chief Powhatan moved from
Werowocomoco (on the York River) to Orapaks (on the Chickahominy River) in1609, Pocahontas was not allowed to visit Jamestown anymore. Later
that year, John Smith left Virginia because of an injury. Some colonists told

The Battle Of Yorktown By Comte De Rochambeau
Even though the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain on 4 of July 1776, they actually gained their freedom only after the
decisive war, the Battle of Yorktown (Introduction.) Yorktown was established in 1691 to regulate trade and collect taxes. Due to its location
surrounded by the York River which led into the Chesapeake Bay, Yorktown would soon develop into a center of commerce. Not only Yorktown fit
for building wharves, storehouses, and docks which used to export and import goods from Great Britain, but it also suit for setting up a naval base by
taking advantage of its surrounding of the York River and Chesapeake Bay area (The Role 4.)
In the past, the three groups that involved in the Battle of Yorktown were French, American and British. In summer of 1780, French allied with
American and provided them a major boost of 5,500 troops which were commanded by Comte de Rochambeau (History of the Siege.) In May 10,
1781, British General Charles Earl Cornwallis, known as Lord Cornwallis, decided that he could not control over the southern colonies until he defeated
Virginia. With that in mind, he searched for a place to set up a naval base which made Yorktown a perfect place in his plan (Colonial 12.) In the
beginning of August 1781, Lord Cornwallis led British forces from Portsmouth, Virginia to the tobacco port of Yorktown and fortified his position to
prepare for the upcoming war. Knowing Lord Cornwallis' move as well as finding out that Admiral Comte

Inequality In Colonial America
Inequality has been a major issue in the Colonial Virginia and it was originated within a hierarchy of race, gender, and social class that already existed
in the mother country of England.
Jamestown, the birthplace of America was the first permanent english settlement in North America. In April 1606, King James I established Jamestown
and on May 13, 1607, colonists began to arrive at Jamestown. When establishing Jamestown as a colony, theVirginia Company was in search of
economic opportunities. The citizens wanted to escape poverty and prosecution. They wanted to be able to believe in what they wanted. The first
month in Jamestown was a struggle for all passengers. The moment the passengers came ashore, they immediately began on settlement. Serious
problems soon emerged when about 15,000–25,000 Indians were already living in the Chesapeake Bay when the colony was founded. The Indians
were part of the Powhatan Confederacy which was ruled by Powhatan, a powerful leader. At this time, the English settlers were looking for gold that
no one was farming. In this situation, Captain John Smith became the colony's leader and established a "no work, no food" policy. Smith had been
instrumental in trading with the Powhatan Indians for food but their relationship was tense in all aspects. After he was injured by a burning
gunpowder in 1608 and left for England, the "starving time" began. This was a period of warfare between the colonists and Indians and the depth of

Chesapeak Bay and Jamestown
It is evident that every culture is affected by the environment in which said culture evolves. Whether these effects can be observed in the gods differing
societies worship, or by the way in which resources are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with its
environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this than the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post
colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an model for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated
by the environment. In the period termed pre–contact the indigenous peoples living in the Chesapeake Bay region were known collectively as the
Powhatan people. This name was used for the collective of the Algonquian speaking tribes in the Chesapeake Bay and, during the time of interest,
was led by Chief Powhatan, who took his tribe name as his ruling name. Chief Powhatan inherited the rule of six tribes when he became chief, as
well as having accumulated a multitude of tribes during his reign to create the Powhatan confederacy. Within this confederacy, each distinct tribe was
responsible for providing military support when requested, as well as were required to provide taxes in the form of pelts, food, copper and pearls.
Notably, at no point was gold objectively mined by the Powhatan people. These people left no written records and thus the information available in
modern times about the

Townsend examines the following months on the settling of the English, as well as Pocahontas's kidnapping, to her imprisonment, down to her marriage
to John Rolfe, her conversion to Christianity, and finally her death.
A major contrast between the Disney Stories and movie of Pocahontus, was that they had failed to mention her kidnapping. Pocahontas' kidnapping
was unjust and surprising as it was by the community of the man who would be her husband and later the father to her child, although Pocahontas
had already been married since the age of twelve or thirteen to a man named Kocoom. Pocahontas' early marriage was then ended when her warrior
Kocoom had then disappeared, for reasons unknown. After this disappearance, Pocahontas later then married to John Rolfe as she had the choice to
choose any man she wanted without the fear of being judged and called cold for her remarriage. Another major difference between Disneys portrayal
of Pocahontas and Townsend's portrayal of Pocahontas is her decision to be baptized. Although it would have been seen as a betrayal to her tribe,
Pocahontas chose to be baptized, with the consent of her father. Even though it was well known to Powhatan (Pocahontas' father), that with his consent
of Pocahontas' baptism (now Rebecca), he would lose not his people's respect, but as well as their trust, he

Rhetorical Analysis Of Chief Powhatan
A leader has many responsibilities as a role model and caretaker for their people. Facing hard challenges and knowing how to deal with them is a part
of being a great leader all of which are Chief Powhatan showed. Chief Powhatan whose proper name was Wahunsenacawh, was the superior chief of
Tsenacommacah, an alliance of Algonquian–speaking Virginia Indians in the Tidewater region of Virginia at the time English settlers landed at
Jamestown in 1607. In his address to Captain John Smith Chief Powhatan expresses how he desires peace between the settlers and the Tsenacommacah.
He utilizes distinct rhetorical elements such as rhetorical questions, diction and argumentation to further support his view on what he desired to occur
between his people and the English settlers.
Chief Powhatan begins to address his statement by using rhetorical questions in order to support his claim of peace. For example in lines 5 through
7 Powhatan says " Why should you take by force that from us which you can have by love? Why should you destroy us who have provided you with
food? What can you get by war? " Obviously Powhatan doesn't expect Captain John Smith to answer his questions but he uses this in order to create a
growing tension that drives a questioning mentality about whether using force is the best method when "love" is another alternative. He also recounts
on how it is unwise and unethical to break ties with the people who have fed and given shelter to the settlers. Without them the settlers would be
starving and freezing to death turning to barbaric methods of survival. In line 9, he continues to support his claim by saying "what is the cause of this
jealousy?" , this is important because the settlers became envious of how the Tsenacommacah were so well developed, having shelter, and food. Having
these benefits over the settlers Powhatan came to the conclusion that the settlers would attempt to pilfer all that the Tsenacommacah had acquired. With
this in mind Powhatan decides to express his desire for peace so that neither side would eventually aim for violence from lines 9 through 15.
Chief Powhatan continues to enhance his argument by using diction to add more emotion and meaning to the message he is trying to convey.

Essay about Disney's Whitewashing of Pocahontas
In 1995, Disney produced a romanticized version of relationships between early Native
Americans and Europeans in the film, Pocahontas. It is controversial whether this movie was intended to enlighten children about the beginning of
America in a story–like manner, or a way to conceal a dark past and brainwash future generations with this illusion of a happy beginning to the United
States of America. In order to make the Pocahontas and John Smith love myth suitable for children, it is understandable that Disney needed to alter the
story. However,
Disney's version of the Pocahontas myth is not only altered for the sake of violence, racial content, and ethnic content, it is also altered to be more

For example, in Disney's film The Lion King, which was produced three years before Pocahontas, there was both verbal and physical fighting among
characters. In Disney's
Mulan, the plot of the movie is a young woman who disguises her sex in order to join the military and fight for her country, and several war scenes
are shown. Therefore, physical violence could not be a possible reason why the Pocahontas film was altered from reality.
In addition to blanketing the violence that occurred between these two cultures, Disney also hid aspects of the realistic Powhatan culture. For example,
the Powhatan language was completely absent from the movie. Of course, the main plot of the story must be in English, but the slightest interactions in
the native Algonkian tongue of the Powhatans would be a way to include the Native American culture, accurately. Also, the interaction among each
other in the tribe was the same interaction seen in American society today. Pocahontas is made to be quite liberal, as she roams around the river area
alone, where she is not allowed. Also similar to
American family relationships, she rebels against her father's wishes and does not have an interest in Kacuom, the man her father wants her to have an
interest in. Pocahontas's rebellion makes the movie more interesting for an American audience, but drifts away from accurate history. While some

Pocahontas: The Name Of Powhatan Indians
Well my one thousand word essay is over Pocahontas. I guess I should start from the beginning as we all must do in this situation. She was believed to
be born by historians around the 1596 in Cloucester County, Virginia; but the exact date was unknown. Pocahontas had many names, it was a very
normal thing for Powhatan Indians (the tribe that she was from) to have several different names. The different names had different meanings for
different times and different situations. Native Americans were often given secret names that a select few knew about. Pocahontas's secret name was

be and portrayed her as one. The inscription on a 1616 engraving of her which was made for the company, reads, "MATOAKA ALS REBECCA FILIA

The saving of John Smith by the princess Pocahontas is being actively debated by historians to this date. Some believe full heartedly that John
Smith was honest in his account of the events, but others see many flaws in what he says. These doubts seem to be justified as many parts of his
account seem to be more of a fairytale than the movie. One historian who believes John Smith is lying in his account of being saved by Pocahontas
is Helen C. Rountree. She points out that "in Smith's later writings, not once, but three times his life is saved by ladies of high rank when he is 'at
the moment of direst peril,' and 'the women were not depicted as real people'" ("Reflecting on Pocahontas", Tremblay, JSTOR). This makes historians
wonder what part of John Smith's tales are fact and what parts are fiction. Also, John Smith did no publish his writings until quite a bit after
Pocahontas had passed away. Therefore, Pocahontas was not there to validate the writings of John Smith and there were other witnesses to such events.
This makes it very easy for John Smith to simply "make–up" his story as he goes to help increase his fame and

The Two Identities of an American Icon
Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of the indigenous people. Conflicts between native
tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to
economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists. Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe,
played a pivotal role in this early contact between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English colonists
and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator"
between the two groups and her marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting to Christianity. The
changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an
ambiguous juxtaposition between her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe.
Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg, Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in

Pocahontas Thesis
The movie, "Pocahontas" is a film about the young daughter of a chief and her adventure with a white man coming to conquer her land. Pocahontas
is a spirited girl who is faced with the challenge of choosing her own path or the one her father set for her and she has no idea which one is the correct
path. Her father, Powhatan, wants her to marry, Kocoum, a good warrior, butPocahontas is not convinced on whether she wants to settle down with
him. On the other side, John Smith, a successful explorer, is going with a crew paid by the Virginia Company to come to the New World to find gold.
When the two meet up, they instantly fall in love. During a singing montage, Pocahontas changed John's opinions on how he viewed Native Americans
and she even taught him customs on her views with nature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On one of their trips, Pocahontas' best friend, Nakoma, saw her with John and believed she was in danger, so Nakoma told Kocoum, so that he would
go after Pocahontas. On the other side of camp, the governor and leader of the Englishmen, Ratcliffe, sent a crew member, Thomas, to go after John. In
the climatic meeting between Pocahontas and John, they kissed. This enrages Kocoum and he immediately plunges at John with a knife and tries to
kill him. Thomas is also watching and when he sees Kocoum, he uses his musket to kill him. Both sides find out about this and it plunges them into
war. Powhatan believes John has killed Kocoum and sets a date for his execution, without letting him nor Pocahontas explain. When both groups are
simply meters apart and Powhatan is about to kill John in front of the Englishmen, Pocahontas steps in and gives a speech that changes the minds of the
Native Americans. The Englishmen see this and step down, because they're not willing to fight an unwilling side. Ratcliffe will have none of

How Did Disney Perpetuate The Reality Of Disney's Story?
Despite the popular stereotype that Disney helped perpetuate, the reality of the situation is, Pocahontas's story had far less to do with romance and
talking animals and far more to do with courage. Disney's depiction is filled to the brim with historical inaccuracies– in fact, her real name wasn't even
Pocahontas.
It was Amonute, or privately, Matoaka.
Born around 1595, "Pocahontas" was the daughter of Chief Powhatan, and his favorite one at that. Dubbed "the playful one", she certainly lived up to
that name by interacting with people with Jamestown, a town founded by English colonists. Little did she know, but by communicating with the
settlers, she may have smoothed out rough patches in the relationship between her people and colonists.

Chief Powhatan Speech
In the year 1609, Chief Powhatan delivered a speech to John Smith in order to affirm peace between the English and the Powhatan people. The chief
asks that the English and his people become equals instead of fighting with each other over food and land. All he asks for is that his generations to
come not have to face the war that he had to go through. Chief Powhatan wants to co–exist with the English and any other colonists who decide to
explore the New World. He doesn't want to be afraid of the colonists anymore. Through this primary source, it is evident that Chief Powhatan simply
wants peace and the ability to co–exist on the same land as the English colonists. Chief Powhatan, also known as Wahunsonacock, was the father of the

He couldn't live through his last few years knowing that the English would try to take everything that they had. He wanted to immediately stop
fighting and make peace with the English men. Realizing that his life would soon be coming to an end, Chief Powhatan weighs the effects of living in
peace versus living in war to appeal to the colonists. The chief wants to live with the Europeans "unarmed and willing...not with swords and guns" but
with "friends" and "copper" (Deloria and Junaluska). He also stated that if they were to continue to live in conflict, "life would become miserable" and
his people would be hunted and treated poorly. If the Europeans continue to violently colonize the New World, Powhatan threatens "to hide [their]
provisions and fly into the woods" which would "consequently famish" John Smith and the colonists (Deloria and Junaluska). Powhatan gives them this
ultimatum to let the English men know that he means business and would do anything to have his children and grandchildren to live in total peace.
Towards the end of the address, Powhatan gives a warning to John Smith and in due course the other Europeans who want to colonize when he told him
that "this might soon be your fate too through your rashness and

How Did English Flint Points Affect Jamestown
3. English flint points are one of the artifacts that prove settlers at Jamestown made contact with Native Americans. These arrowheads, made from chert
and flint, were very valuable in the Tidewater region. The Powhatans' main hunting tool was a bow and arrow. The Powhatans attacked the settlement
many times, as proven by the hundreds of broken stone points found all around Jamestown. When tensions arose between the natives and the settlers, a
focus was put on weaponry. Settlers began to wear breastplates to protect themselves from the arrows of the natives. They also used bills, an
agricultural tool turned weapon, to fight off the natives during guerilla attacks (bills were used to prune trees). The flint points, previously mentioned,...

Many artifacts offer clues to prove that there were illnesses, diseases, and some medical treatments/procedures present in the community. It it clear
that illnesses and disease had a huge impact on the settlers of Jamestown because by January 1608, 60% of settlers were dead due to illnesses
/disease. This was due to the lack of knowledge regarding germs and bacteria. Diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and salt poisoning were the
biggest killers during the first few years of the Jamestown settlement. Molars found at the Jamestown excavation site also reveal advanced periodontal
disease plagued many of the settlers. In addition to this, there were also very few men with knowledge of medicine, eight in total by the end of the first
year of settlement (two physicians, four surgeons, and two apothecaries). Many treatments and procedures revolved around medical instruments
available as well as pain–killers (laudanum was a very popular pain–killer at the time that is now known to cause constipation if taken in large

The Legacy Of Captain John Smith 's Life Essay
While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John Smith's life, in this paper I will be covering
several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day
Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a
children's video by Disney, while others have been debated by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works
consisting of six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New–England, and the Summer Isles.
While many cannot picture Smith in any context other than with Pocahontas, he had a very active life before he even met her. As stated by Woolf, prior
to even meeting Pocahontas Smith had been "in an army fighting the Ottoman Turks in central Europe, during which he went through several escapes,
was seriously wounded, taken into slavery, after which he murdered his slave–master and escaped, along with being shipwrecked twice."1 All of these
exploits happened before Smith ended up in Virginia at the Jamestown colony, and met Pocahontas, the narrative of which most Americans are
intimately familiar with or so they think.
To begin, unlike Disney's portrayal of what most people thought of as an epic romance of the ages, Pocahontas and John Smith were never intimate
with each other. In addition, while being the

Allen argues that, by emphasizing an ideal romance, attention is taken away from the true economic motive of Smith and the colonists: attaining
wealth, prosperity and progress at any cost. The mythological romance between John Smith and Pocahontas lends a "mystique to those original
corporate executives" where it otherwise would not exist. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls the past controls the future." I applaud Allen for
challenging the traditional narrative about this historical figure and for giving readers a chance to look at human relations with the environment in our
present and our future. I would recommend this book because it tells you Pocahontas's story in way that is easy to understand, and challenges what
historians believe about her.

Powhatan
The Powhatans were a native american tribe that lived in Virginia. They also spoke an eastern–Algonquian language, so they were often referred as
Virginia Algonquians. The Powhatan Indians lived in the towns by rivers for easy ways to get food and for transportations, they also always bathed
in the river every day. The Powhatans lived in houses called Yehakins. "The yehakins were made from saplings bent and lashed together at the top to
form a barrel shape. Woven mats or bark were placed on top of the saplings and space left for an entrance at each end of the house and an open hole at
the center of the roof for smoke to escape." (http://www.nps.gov/jame/learn/historyculture/the–powhatan–indian–world.htm)

Film Analysis Pocahontas Essay
Film Analysis: Pocahontas
The animated Walt Disney movie Pocahontas is based on a true life story of a young Powhatan Indian girl named Pocahontas who falls in love with
John Smith. In the making of the movie, Walt Disney, attempts to relate to the early 17th Century historic event of Europeans settling in Jamestown;
however, Disney did not portrait the true story. Disney rewrote the story by making it a beautifully romantic and animated love story like a Cinderella
fairytale.
In the Walt Disney movie,Pocahontas and John Smith were both young adults when they first met. Pocahontas was very alethic, and wore a

He started scouting around and began drawing maps immediately. He met Pocahontas by almost shooting her by a water fall, and later they fell in
love. He was captured later in the movie while venturing out alone at night to meet Pocahontas. John Smith was going to be executed on top of a rock
at dawn, in front of an army of colonists who planned to rescue him. In reality, John smith was arrested and chained in irons during the voyage over,
and he was released a month after arriving to Jamestown, Virginia. After he was set free, he did a lot of exploring and trading with the Indians. John
Smith mapped most of the Jamestown area. He was eventually captured while seeking food along the Chickahominy River. John Smith was brought to
Chief Powhatan and was sentenced to be executed. This is when he actually met Matoaka, the real name of Pocahontas, and she rescued him from
execution. Matoake was the oldest daughter of Chief Powhatan. John Smith became good friends with Matoake, and eventually Chief Powhatan
adopted Smith as his son. (Squidoo, Inc., 2012)
According to history, despite the fact that Pocahontas is most famous for saving the life of John Smith, she never marries him. Smith returns to find
the situation at the fort desperate. They are running out of food and only 38 of the original 105 Colonists are alive. Smith was accused of causing the
deaths of his men. He was overthrown from his position and almost condemned to hang. Lucky a ship arrived at Newport carrying

Pocahontas: Relationship Between The Powhatans And Settlers
Pocahontas, also once called Matoaka was a Powhatan indian who brought peace between the colonists and native Americans by befriending them. As
a young girl, Pocahontas saved the life of John Smith when he got captured by her father and about to be executed. Eventually, she became friends

English settlers, once Smith returned to England the relationship between the Powhatans and settlers began to crumble and would never be the same.

In the winter of 1608, the English traded with the Powhatan tribes for more food, but found out that a drought had severely reduced the tribe's harvest.
As the Settlers demanded more and more food, Chief Powhatan finally came to a compromise with Smith that if he gave him swords, guns, and
some metals he would give him a boatful of corn. Unfortunately, Smith did not hold up his end of the deal and consequently, Pocahontas and her
family planned to kill him. Pocahontas that night though warned Smith of what her father planned to do than disappeared into the woods never to
be heard of from him. Naturally, after that experience the relationship between the english and the Powhatan tribe began to dissolve and in the fall
of 1609 Smith returned to England for medical care and was rumored to the indians that he died on his way over to England. As Pocahontas got

Rhetorical Analysis Of Chief Powhatan Speech
From the very beginning of the exploration of the New World, relationships between the Native Americans and settlers were uncertain at best. Slowly
becoming strained after various circumstances, especially those including betrayal. In Chief Powhatan's Address to Captain John Smith, the betrayal
felt by the Native American from the settlers (those lead by Captain John Smith) can be clearly portrayed. In the speech Chief Powhatan makes a claim
for peace, mainly through the rhetorical elements those including selection of detail, diction and word choice Powhatan's speech demonstrates a
selection of detail due to the fact that the conclusions are drawn from his own experience. Personal in nature and subjective, demonstrates Powhatan's
treatment of the subject manner. In line 9, the Chief uses the phrase "I wish their experience was equal to mine," meaning he wants his children to
have the same relationship with the colonists as his generation has enjoyed. Furthermore, it demonstrates how the subject affects him personally and is
close to his heart. By stating "Why should you take by force that from us which you can have by love? Why should you destroy us ... Show more

Causes Of Early Jamestown
Jamestown is now known as the very first permanent English settlement in the New World. However, from 1607–1610, early Jamestown constantly
hovered right above the line of failure from reasons both outside the settlement and within its borders. Three main reasons the Jamestown colonists
died were because of their lack of preparation, poor relations with the Native Americans, and the location of their settlement. Many Jamestown
colonists died because of their lack of preparation. According to the information video, a group of English investors called the Virginia Company
paid for this voyage to Jamestown in return for reaping some of the riches collected by the colonists. This idea was widely influenced by the
Spanish becoming extremely rich from their successful trip to the New World. In addition, Document A states, that "ahead lay possible riches" for
the English men to find. The Englishmen originally did not plan to stay in Jamestown; the reason for sailing to Jamestown was to find gold quickly
and return to England to hopefully become as rich as the Spanish. Furthermore, Document C notes that, out of the first supply of men, 43% of the
men were gentlemen, who are people defined as a being of wealth not used to working with his hands. In comparison, only about 11% of the original
settlers were laborers. This proves that the majority of men lacked actual skill for finding any gold at all, and that there was no way the crew was
prepared for this voyage. In addition,

The False Interpretation Of Pocahontas And The Powhatan Essay
The False Interpretation of Pocahontas and the Powhatan Natives
Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma is a novel written by Camilla Townsend, which illustrates a well detailed perspective of the life of Pocahontas,
daughter of Chief Powhatan. It is often shown that Pocahontas 's story is misinterpreted, as many analyses of this subject are conducted by the
speculations of various historical writings. To record, there is no single document by Pocahontas herself, so it is left for historians to rely on other
people 's perspectives of the time. With the idea that most sources of this period would have come from rich, white men, these ideas would ultimately
be biased in their views. In my opinion, I believe that the thesis regarding this book was to illustrate the true telling of Pocahontas and the effect of the
English on the Natives residing in America during the 17th century. Specifically, I chose to analyze Chapter 3: First Contact, as Townsend was able to
shed light upon the mythical idea of Pocahontas and demonstrate the plethora of inaccurate ideas portrayed by the settlers on the Native American
culture. It is without doubt that there has been a prominent distinction between the Native Americans and the English settlers upon landing in Virginia
in the early 1600s. With the prior 'knowledge' from previous pioneers in America, the colonist had viewed the Natives in a vilified manner as savages
without proper means of civilization. These so called 'heathens' were said

Pocahontas Influence On Jamestown
On May 13, 1607 marks the date that English settlers arrived at a site they named Jamestown and established the first successful English settlement in
the New World. Pocahontas, along with the leadership of Captain John Smith, was instrumental in this accomplishment. Pocahontas was a Native
American (daughter of Powhatan, emperor of Werowocomoco) woman who became a fast friend of Smith and the colonists, helping the English colony
in Tidewater area of Virginia to survive in its fragile early years. John Smith was a leader of the Virginia Colony. He was considered to have played an
important part in the establishment of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America.

Before Adams, historians had generally accepted that during Smith's imprisonment with the Chesapeake's Algonquin Indians, he had been brought
before their chief, Powhatan, for execution, and that it was only by the last second intervention of the chief's favorite daughter that Smith kept his life.
The only source for this event was Smith's own account, published in the General Historie in 1624. Adams cited the absence of the Pocahontas story in
the much earlier True Relation as evidence that Smith was simply lying. Also he says that it's rather odd that Smith didn't mention his own experience
about his brains about to be beaten out his head. From Adams, we learn that that Smith's two completely different versions don't match up. The later
one, A General History of Virginia, exaggerates a lot of details in A True Relation, and brings up new information Smith never mentioned in the 16
years between the publication of the

Analysis Of The Book ' Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma '
As young children we are often misled to believe that the stories and movies we are exposed to are presumably based on factual history, but are in
reality myths, keeping the truthful, important, and fair facts hidden. Amonute is an accurate example of learning the real events that occurred in a
person's life while the typical myth of Pocahontas saved an Englishmen from being killed by her father. In the beginning of the book we are briefly
introduced to Pocahontas, the Powhatan people and the English colonists. As the book continues we follow Pocahontas when she is kidnapped, her
married life, and her trip to London where she got sick because of foreign illnesses and died. Camilla Townsends "Pocahontas and the Powhatan
Dilemma" wants Pocahontas' true story to unfold because she is worthy of respect for her bravery and sacrifice and because "everyone subverted her
life to satisfy their own needs to believe that the Indians loved and admired them" (Townsend, pg. xi). I also believe that the author was trying to argue
that even though the Englishmen believed that the Native Americans were uncivilized and lived like savages, that instead they were wise people.
Townsend believed that there was nothing more that Pocahontas could have done for her people – she was kidnapped, took on a different culture, and
married an English man, all for the sake of her society. "Now was the greatest labor to win her, guilty perhaps of her fathers wrongs, though not
knowne as she supposed to go

The Novel ' Love And Hate On The New World '
Struggling with the Birth of a New Nation Americans are very curious about their history and how the United States was first formed. Although
the Americans currently lack basic knowledge about what had happened in their past, they still have evidence about what may had happened to
cause the things that are here today. Simple items such as books, tablets, oral stories, artworks, and genes could be evidence on what had happened
in the past. David A. Price's novel Love and Hate in Jamestown introduces greatly about the first successful colony that was established in North
America. This novel presents about the first English settlement in the new world, Jamestown, and the events that took place in this new area.
Adapting to a new area could be a difficult task to do, but overtime people would learn how to adapt to their new environment. The novel Love and
Hate in Jamestown, by David A. Price, is about British sailing to the new world to seek gold, but instead they found land in the new world. Now
they'll have to face hardship and learn to adapt to this new area they have claimed. This new territory would be lead by an unpopular but an
enterprising leader, Captain John Smith. The author's purpose in this novel is to present to readers the love and happiness of the settlers, struggles and
fear of survival, and the major theme in the novel. To introduce the readers this novel, I would like to start off explaining the love and happiness of the
settlers when they had arrived in

Powhatan Wars

  • 1. Powhatan Wars When the British settlers arrived on the Powhatan territory, the Indians did not see them as a threat, it was a mutual relationship. When the Powhatan realised that the British's intention was to own the land, conflict aroused as the Indians do not believe in man owning land. The British suffered an Indian attack in 1607, two weeks after the British arrival, but the Indians were fought off with weapons such as muskets and cannons. This was the start of the Powhatan wars. The Powhatan were a nomadic tribe who spoke many different languages (Source 2). The Powhatan Chiefdoms Population was about 25 000 which included 30 Algonquian speaking tribes–each with its own chief. The Powhatan Indians homeland was called ''Tsenacomoco'' (Source 4).The ... • 2. Essay On Early Jamestown Settlers Before the colony of Jamestown first rooted its foundations in the swampy, disease–ridden James riverbanks of Virginia in 1607, the Pamunkey tribe of Native Americans had already gathered a century of knowledge and expectations of the would–be English conquerors that settled Jamestown. However, the Jamestown settlers proved an unexpected rival for the Pamunkeys and their powerful emperor Powhatan, and a force he could not have reckoned with based on his early information. Both the English and Native leaders met on the James with somewhat condescending assumptions about each other that led to a long history of wary truce and mutual prosperity as well as vengeful rivalry and all–out war. About a century before the arrival of the first inexperienced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although incompetent and struggling at first, and expecting to rely on the natives for food and assistance in their settlement in their early years, the English still expected to overpower the Pamunkeys eventually; an event they saw as an inevitability due to their rapid expansion as a colony. They expected a thriving and powerful community of natives upon their arrival but also knew they had the superior weapons and technology. The English wanted to keep their advantages of a surprising lack of assistance and superior military force, and they trained with weapons in secret to avoid the Indians gauging their true potential for danger. As one can imagine, the assumptions on both sides that the other party would be easily dominated and controlled was grounds for an unstable yet mutually beneficial relationship at the best, and an all–out bloody fight for survival at the worst. At first, the demand for trade in furs, gold, and pearls in Europe as well as the Pamunkeys' demand for glass beads and useful tools allowed for a truce lasting for two years that was strengthened by John Smith's and Powhatan's leadership capabilities and mutual ... • 3. Raleigh's Journey To The New World Analysis Winter has shadowed upon us but as a nation that has gone through generations even centuries living through these conditions and knowing how to sustain and live through it. However, not every land is the same, not every soil has the same nutrients to make crops flourish, and not every climate alike. In the late 1500's the Spanish and the French had claimed a large portion of the New World, however the East Coast was left unclaimed. Therefore in 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh asked our Queen Elizabeth I if he could have the honor of setting sail to the New World and claim new territory for England. She then issued a charter allowing Raleigh to discover, search and find out about the alien terrain. Thus, Raleigh gathered approximately 100 men to Embark to the New World. When he first lands... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His main goal was to establish the first permanent English settlement in the New World by developing an economy and agriculture. They also found it important to build a peaceful relationship with the Indians. White believed survival in the New World was to live peaceful in coexistence with one and other. For a while both the English colonist and native Algonkin people (the tribe that inhabited Roanoke) were living cohesively. In November, 1587, White sailed back to England to report to the Crown on behalf of the colony. However White was unable to return toRoanoke Island for over two years due to the Spanish Armada that attacked England. Once the war was over and England won against the Spanish, when he went back to the island there was no one on the island. The only sign of the colonists were the letters "CROATOAN" which was a Native the island for the colonists, but unfortunately there trace of them left. • 4. Pocahontas's Effect On The People Of Jamestown Did you know that Pocahontas isn't just a Disney character? Pocahontas was born around 1595 in what is now North America, but no one knows exactly when she was born. She was the favorite daughter of Chief Powhatan's, but her mother is unknown. She helped many people, including the people of Jamestown. John Smith and John Rolfe, citizens of Jamestown, affected Pocahontas' life greatly. Pocahontas helped the people of Jamestown survive through their first winter; she brought them food and told them when the Native Americans were going to attack. Throughout most of her life, Pocahontas lived in Tsenacommacah. She learned to do the many things most young ladies did, such as foraging for food and firewood, farm, and build thatched houses. Pocahontas was known by more than one name. Matoaka and Amonute were two of her names. Pocahontas was her casual name, meaning 'playful one'. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Chief Powhatan Speech Rhetorical Devices Chief Powhatan's speech was delivered in 1609 written to Captain John Smith and the white men with him. Powhatan was considered a strong and powerful leader who wanted the best for his people. The reason of this speech is that Chief Powhatan is near the end of his life and is concerned about their relationship when his concessor takes place. To convey his message about peace his uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos as well as literary elements. Powhatan uses pathos to attach or persuade Captain John Smith with sentimentality to reach out to him on a more personal level. He wrote " I am growing old and must soon die." this helps by making Captain John Smith feel concerned about Powhatans years of life left, making him feel pity. Another example of pathos would be "Why should you take by force that from us which you can have from love?". Here you can see how Powhatan is trying to convince and make a point of how peace is easier achieve than what it appears to be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This particular rhetorical device is used to share your personal standing or opinion about the matter .For example when Powhatan said "In such circumstances, my men must watch, and if a twig should but break, all would cry out, "here comes Captain Smith"". Here hes trying to emphasize how instead of fearing him, he would like to establish peace. The last rhetorical device used to convey his point is logos. He uses rhetorical questions to make him realize how peace could be established and how it can be avoided as well. Examples would be "Why should you take by force that from us which you can have by love?" and " Why should you destroy us who have provided you with food? What can you get by ... • 6. Pocahontas Compare And Contrast In the movie doesn't Pocahontas look like she is in her twenties, but is she really? She may look and seem like she is at least in her twenties but, really she is not. In John Smith's "The General History of Virginia" she is actually only eleven or twelve. The movie makes it seem like she is older; it just seems like a little too much of over exaggeration. When thinking about the fact of how old Pocahontas is does it bring up the thought if she was only eleven or twelve then, how old was John Smith? In that case John Smith was nineteen years old in the movie, in real life he was twenty–seven. What are some similarities that both in John Smith's account and the disney version have? • 7. Pocahontas Compare And Contrast Many people know the story of Pocahontas, but how much of it is true? Pocahontas was a Native American princess who was one of twenty–seven daughters of Chief Powhatan, the leader of the Powhatan tribe. Disney has produced a film based on the life of Pocahontas; however, it has been debated how closely this fiction movie has stayed to its history. Though reality and the children's movie share many similarities, they also differ in many ways. Pocahontas has been portrayed in many different ways in both history books and fiction films. For example, in the movie Pocahontas and John Smith were pretty close in age, young adults; however, in actuality, Pocahontas was a child probably around eleven and Smith was probably around twenty–eight. • 8. Pocahontas Research Paper Pocahontas. What is thought of when that name is mentioned? For some, she was an Indian princess. For others, she was an Indian peacemaker. However, for many, she was an Indian savior. Pocahontas is one of those people that historians don't know much about. She never left us any documents written by her. After Smith was taken to many Powhatan towns, he was taken to Chief Powhatan. As Smith tells it, "Having feasted [me] after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation was held, but the conclusion was, two great stones were brought before Powhatan: then as many as could laid hands on [me], dragged [me] to them, and thereon laid [my] head, and being ready with their clubs to beat out [my] brains, Pocahontas, the King's dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevail, got [my] head in her arms, and laid her own upon [mine] to save [me] from death."* After the presumed execution, Powhatan told Smith he was part of the tribe. When Smith returned to Jamestown, Chief Powhatan sent food to the settlers, who were struggling to survive. Accompanying the Indians sent to the settlers with the food was usually Pocahontas. In the winter of 1608–1609, Powhatan decided to stop trading with the settlers. After Powhatan and his family moved into the woods, Pocahontas came to Jamestown to warn Smith that her father planned to kill him. After Chief Powhatan moved from Werowocomoco (on the York River) to Orapaks (on the Chickahominy River) in1609, Pocahontas was not allowed to visit Jamestown anymore. • 9. The Battle Of Yorktown By Comte De Rochambeau Even though the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain on 4 of July 1776, they actually gained their freedom only after the decisive war, the Battle of Yorktown (Introduction.) Yorktown was established in 1691 to regulate trade and collect taxes. Due to its location surrounded by the York River which led into the Chesapeake Bay, Yorktown would soon develop into a center of commerce. Not only Yorktown fit for building wharves, storehouses, and docks which used to export and import goods from Great Britain, but it also suit for setting up a naval base by taking advantage of its surrounding of the York River and Chesapeake Bay area (The Role 4.) In the past, the three groups that involved in the Battle of Yorktown were French, American and British. In summer of 1780, French allied with American and provided them a major boost of 5,500 troops which were commanded by Comte de Rochambeau (History of the Siege.) In May 10, 1781, British General Charles Earl Cornwallis, known as Lord Cornwallis, decided that he could not control over the southern colonies until he defeated Virginia. With that in mind, he searched for a place to set up a naval base which made Yorktown a perfect place in his plan (Colonial 12.) • 10. Inequality In Colonial America Inequality has been a major issue in the Colonial Virginia and it was originated within a hierarchy of race, gender, and social class that already existed in the mother country of England. Jamestown, the birthplace of America was the first permanent english settlement in North America. In April 1606, King James I established Jamestown and on May 13, 1607, colonists began to arrive at Jamestown. When establishing Jamestown as a colony, theVirginia Company was in search of economic opportunities. The citizens wanted to escape poverty and prosecution. They wanted to be able to believe in what they wanted. The first month in Jamestown was a struggle for all passengers. The moment the passengers came ashore, they immediately began on settlement. Serious problems soon emerged when about 15,000–25,000 Indians were already living in the Chesapeake Bay when the colony was founded. The Indians were part of the Powhatan Confederacy which was ruled by Powhatan, a powerful leader. At this time, the English settlers were looking for gold that no one was farming. In this situation, Captain John Smith became the colony's leader and established a "no work, no food" policy. Smith had been instrumental in trading with the Powhatan Indians for food but their relationship was tense in all aspects. After he was injured by a burning gunpowder in 1608 and left for England, the "starving time" began. • 12. Chesapeak Bay and Jamestown It is evident that every culture is affected by the environment in which said culture evolves. Whether these effects can be observed in the gods differing societies worship, or by the way in which resources are accumulated, the reasons are all the same. How each society and culture interacts with its environment dictates its development and growth. There is no more evident an example of this than the Chesapeake Bay area, pre, mid, and post colonization, using the colony of Jamestown as an model for contact interactions between two distinct cultures, and how these relations can be dictated by the environment. In the period termed pre–contact the indigenous peoples living in the Chesapeake Bay region were known collectively as the Powhatan people. This name was used for the collective of the Algonquian speaking tribes in the Chesapeake Bay and, during the time of interest, was led by Chief Powhatan, who took his tribe name as his ruling name. Chief Powhatan inherited the rule of six tribes when he became chief, as well as having accumulated a multitude of tribes during his reign to create the Powhatan confederacy. Within this confederacy, each distinct tribe was responsible for providing military support when requested, as well as were required to provide taxes in the form of pelts, food, copper and pearls. Notably, at no point was gold objectively mined by the Powhatan people. These people left no written records and thus the information available in modern times about the ... Townsend examines the following months on the settling of the English, as well as Pocahontas's kidnapping, to her imprisonment, down to her marriage to John Rolfe, her conversion to Christianity, and finally her death. A major contrast between the Disney Stories and movie of Pocahontus, was that they had failed to mention her kidnapping. Pocahontas' kidnapping was unjust and surprising as it was by the community of the man who would be her husband and later the father to her child, although Pocahontas had already been married since the age of twelve or thirteen to a man named Kocoom. Pocahontas' early marriage was then ended when her warrior Kocoom had then disappeared, for reasons unknown. After this disappearance, Pocahontas later then married to John Rolfe as she had the choice to choose any man she wanted without the fear of being judged and called cold for her remarriage. Another major difference between Disneys portrayal of Pocahontas and Townsend's portrayal of Pocahontas is her decision to be baptized. Although it would have been seen as a betrayal to her tribe, Pocahontas chose to be baptized, with the consent of her father. Even though it was well known to Powhatan (Pocahontas' father), that with his consent of Pocahontas' baptism (now Rebecca), he would lose not his people's respect, but as well as their trust, he ... One of the main diseases that was brought over by the English was smallpox . Also measles was a very infectious disease among the Native Americans . The natives had no immunity to these diseases so they were highly contagious and deadly , especially to the children of the tribes . These diseases in a wholes greatly decreased and wiped out a lot of the Native Americans in the area . • 15. Rhetorical Analysis Of Chief Powhatan A leader has many responsibilities as a role model and caretaker for their people. Facing hard challenges and knowing how to deal with them is a part of being a great leader all of which are Chief Powhatan showed. Chief Powhatan whose proper name was Wahunsenacawh, was the superior chief of Tsenacommacah, an alliance of Algonquian–speaking Virginia Indians in the Tidewater region of Virginia at the time English settlers landed at Jamestown in 1607. In his address to Captain John Smith Chief Powhatan expresses how he desires peace between the settlers and the Tsenacommacah. He utilizes distinct rhetorical elements such as rhetorical questions, diction and argumentation to further support his view on what he desired to occur between his people and the English settlers. Chief Powhatan begins to address his statement by using rhetorical questions in order to support his claim of peace. For example in lines 5 through 7 Powhatan says " Why should you take by force that from us which you can have by love? Why should you destroy us who have provided you with food? What can you get by war? " Obviously Powhatan doesn't expect Captain John Smith to answer his questions but he uses this in order to create a growing tension that drives a questioning mentality about whether using force is the best method when "love" is another alternative. He also recounts on how it is unwise and unethical to break ties with the people who have fed and given shelter to the settlers. Without them the settlers would be starving and freezing to death turning to barbaric methods of survival. In line 9, he continues to support his claim by saying "what is the cause of this jealousy?" , this is important because the settlers became envious of how the Tsenacommacah were so well developed, having shelter, and food. Having these benefits over the settlers Powhatan came to the conclusion that the settlers would attempt to pilfer all that the Tsenacommacah had acquired. With this in mind Powhatan decides to express his desire for peace so that neither side would eventually aim for violence from lines 9 through 15. Chief Powhatan continues to enhance his argument by using diction to add more emotion and meaning to the message he is trying to convey. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Essay about Disney's Whitewashing of Pocahontas In 1995, Disney produced a romanticized version of relationships between early Native Americans and Europeans in the film, Pocahontas. It is controversial whether this movie was intended to enlighten children about the beginning of America in a story–like manner, or a way to conceal a dark past and brainwash future generations with this illusion of a happy beginning to the United States of America. In order to make the Pocahontas and John Smith love myth suitable for children, it is understandable that Disney needed to alter the story. However, Disney's version of the Pocahontas myth is not only altered for the sake of violence, racial content, and ethnic content, it is also altered to be more appealing to Americans and to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in Disney's film The Lion King, which was produced three years before Pocahontas, there was both verbal and physical fighting among characters. In Disney's Mulan, the plot of the movie is a young woman who disguises her sex in order to join the military and fight for her country, and several war scenes are shown. Therefore, physical violence could not be a possible reason why the Pocahontas film was altered from reality. In addition to blanketing the violence that occurred between these two cultures, Disney also hid aspects of the realistic Powhatan culture. For example, the Powhatan language was completely absent from the movie. Of course, the main plot of the story must be in English, but the slightest interactions in the native Algonkian tongue of the Powhatans would be a way to include the Native American culture, accurately. Also, the interaction among each other in the tribe was the same interaction seen in American society today. Pocahontas is made to be quite liberal, as she roams around the river area alone, where she is not allowed. Also similar to American family relationships, she rebels against her father's wishes and does not have an interest in Kacuom, the man her father wants her to have an interest in. Pocahontas's rebellion makes the movie more interesting for an American audience, but drifts away from accurate history. While some aspects of Native American culture ... She was believed to be born by historians around the 1596 in Cloucester County, Virginia; but the exact date was unknown. Pocahontas had many names, it was a very normal thing for Powhatan Indians (the tribe that she was from) to have several different names. The different names had different meanings for different times and different situations. Native Americans were often given secret names that a select few knew about. Pocahontas Fact Analysis Pocahontas: The Facts and the Fairytale Pocahontas is a movie that was released by Disney in 1995 based on the settlement of Jamestown by the British and their relations with the local Powhatan Indians. The movie tells of a romantic story between the princess of the Powhatan tribe, Pocahontas, and the strong and charismatic English settler, John Smith. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The saving of John Smith by the princess Pocahontas is being actively debated by historians to this date. Some believe full heartedly that John Smith was honest in his account of the events, but others see many flaws in what he says. These doubts seem to be justified as many parts of his account seem to be more of a fairytale than the movie. One historian who believes John Smith is lying in his account of being saved by Pocahontas is Helen C. Rountree. She points out that "in Smith's later writings, not once, but three times his life is saved by ladies of high rank when he is 'at the moment of direst peril,' and 'the women were not depicted as real people'" ("Reflecting on Pocahontas", Tremblay, JSTOR). This makes historians wonder what part of John Smith's tales are fact and what parts are fiction. Also, John Smith did no publish his writings until quite a bit after Pocahontas had passed away. Therefore, Pocahontas was not there to validate the writings of John Smith and there were other witnesses to such events. • 19. The Two Identities Of An American Icon Carolina Mallar Dr. Pagnoni Christianity: G Period 10 December 2014 The Two Identities of an American Icon Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of the indigenous people. Conflicts between native tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists. Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe, played a pivotal role in this early contact between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator" between the two groups and her marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting to Christianity. The changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an ambiguous juxtaposition between her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe. Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg, Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. These arrowheads, made from chert and flint, were very valuable in the Tidewater region. The Powhatans' main hunting tool was a bow and arrow. The Powhatans attacked the settlement many times, as proven by the hundreds of broken stone points found all around Jamestown. When tensions arose between the natives and the settlers, a focus was put on weaponry. Settlers began to wear breastplates to protect themselves from the arrows of the natives. The Legacy Of Captain John Smith 's Life Essay While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John Smith's life, in this paper I will be covering several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a children's video by Disney, while others have been debated by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works consisting of six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New–England, and the Summer Isles. While many cannot picture Smith in any context other than with Pocahontas, he had a very active life before he even met her. As stated by Woolf, prior to even meeting Pocahontas Smith had been "in an army fighting the Ottoman Turks in central Europe, during which he went through several escapes, was seriously wounded, taken into slavery, after which he murdered his slave–master and escaped, along with being shipwrecked twice."1 All of these exploits happened before Smith ended up in Virginia at the Jamestown colony, and met Pocahontas, the narrative of which most Americans are intimately familiar with or so they think. To begin, unlike Disney's portrayal of what most people thought of as an epic romance of the ages, Pocahontas and John Smith were never intimate with each other. In addition, while being the ... George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls the past controls the future." According to the information video, a group of English investors called the Virginia Company paid for this voyage to Jamestown in return for reaping some of the riches collected by the colonists. This idea was widely influenced by the Spanish becoming extremely rich from their successful trip to the New World. In addition, Document A states, that "ahead lay possible riches" for the English men to find. The Englishmen originally did not plan to stay in Jamestown; the reason for sailing to Jamestown was to find gold quickly and return to England to hopefully become as rich as the Spanish. Furthermore, Document C notes that, out of the first supply of men, 43% of the men were gentlemen, who are people defined as a being of wealth not used to working with his hands. In comparison, only about 11% of the original settlers were laborers. This proves that the majority of men lacked actual skill for finding any gold at all, and that there was no way the crew was prepared for this voyage. In addition, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The False Interpretation Of Pocahontas And The Powhatan Essay The False Interpretation of Pocahontas and the Powhatan Natives Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma is a novel written by Camilla Townsend, which illustrates a well detailed perspective of the life of Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan. It is often shown that Pocahontas 's story is misinterpreted, as many analyses of this subject are conducted by the speculations of various historical writings. To record, there is no single document by Pocahontas herself, so it is left for historians to rely on other people 's perspectives of the time. With the idea that most sources of this period would have come from rich, white men, these ideas would ultimately be biased in their views. In my opinion, I believe that the thesis regarding this book was to illustrate the true telling of Pocahontas and the effect of the English on the Natives residing in America during the 17th century. Specifically, I chose to analyze Chapter 3: First Contact, as Townsend was able to shed light upon the mythical idea of Pocahontas and demonstrate the plethora of inaccurate ideas portrayed by the settlers on the Native American culture. It is without doubt that there has been a prominent distinction between the Native Americans and the English settlers upon landing in Virginia in the early 1600s. With the prior 'knowledge' from previous pioneers in America, the colonist had viewed the Natives in a vilified manner as savages without proper means of civilization. These so called 'heathens' were said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Pocahontas Influence On Jamestown On May 13, 1607 marks the date that English settlers arrived at a site they named Jamestown and established the first successful English settlement in the New World. Pocahontas, along with the leadership of Captain John Smith, was instrumental in this accomplishment. Pocahontas was a Native American (daughter of Powhatan, emperor of Werowocomoco) woman who became a fast friend of Smith and the colonists, helping the English colony in Tidewater area of Virginia to survive in its fragile early years. John Smith was a leader of the Virginia Colony. He was considered to have played an important part in the establishment of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. In a well–known historical anecdote, Pocahontas is said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before Adams, historians had generally accepted that during Smith's imprisonment with the Chesapeake's Algonquin Indians, he had been brought before their chief, Powhatan, for execution, and that it was only by the last second intervention of the chief's favorite daughter that Smith kept his life. The only source for this event was Smith's own account, published in the General Historie in 1624. Adams cited the absence of the Pocahontas story in the much earlier True Relation as evidence that Smith was simply lying. Also he says that it's rather odd that Smith didn't mention his own experience about his brains about to be beaten out his head. From Adams, we learn that that Smith's two completely different versions don't match up. The later one, A General History of Virginia, exaggerates a lot of details in A True Relation, and brings up new information Smith never mentioned in the 16 years between the publication of the ... • 37. Analysis Of The Book ' Pocahontas And The Powhatan Dilemma ' As young children we are often misled to believe that the stories and movies we are exposed to are presumably based on factual history, but are in reality myths, keeping the truthful, important, and fair facts hidden. Amonute is an accurate example of learning the real events that occurred in a person's life while the typical myth of Pocahontas saved an Englishmen from being killed by her father. In the beginning of the book we are briefly introduced to Pocahontas, the Powhatan people and the English colonists. As the book continues we follow Pocahontas when she is kidnapped, her married life, and her trip to London where she got sick because of foreign illnesses and died. Camilla Townsends "Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma" wants Pocahontas' true story to unfold because she is worthy of respect for her bravery and sacrifice and because "everyone subverted her life to satisfy their own needs to believe that the Indians loved and admired them" (Townsend, pg. xi). I also believe that the author was trying to argue that even though the Englishmen believed that the Native Americans were uncivilized and lived like savages, that instead they were wise people. Townsend believed that there was nothing more that Pocahontas could have done for her people – she was kidnapped, took on a different culture, and married an English man, all for the sake of her society. "Now was the greatest labor to win her, guilty perhaps of her fathers wrongs, though not knowne as she supposed to go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
