Groundhog Day Speech
Every year on February 2, the city of Puttingneg, North Dakota, and surrounding cities celebrate Groundhog Day. The tradition is if the groundhog
sees its shadow, it will be frightened and return to its burrow, indicating there will be a longer winter. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, then
spring is on the way. In 1935, my friends and I sought to change the outcome of the weather by stealing the groundhog's shadow from the Puttingneg
city zoo. It was a good idea at the time. I soon find out that it was a mistake. It made me realize there are positive or negative consequences to our
actions. People have been talking about the day the groundhog shadow did not cast for many years. The rumors about his shadow changed during

Essay about Macklemore Otherside Analysis
Otherside–Macklemore "We live on the cusp of death thinking that it won't be us," (l.32). Macklemore is saying that people think that they will not
die from doing drugs. In this song Macklemore is stating that drugs can be really addictive also he states that drugs can really mess you up and how
media influences you to do drugs, for example rappers like Lil Wayne which he talks about in this song and Wiz Kalifa. Strong poetic devices
permeate throughout Macklemore's song Otherside for example he uses allusions, repetition and end rhyme. An example of a poetic device that
Macklemore uses in this song is allusion. One allusion Macklemore uses is "Groundhog Day life repeat each time"(l.59). Macklemore mentions the

He is also saying to keep him on this high of making his music instead of using drugs to get high. Macklemore uses repetition in his songs to help
emphasize what he is talking about. One other poetic device that Macklemore uses in his song is end rhyme. One form of end rhyme in his song
would be, "there's no way to glorify this pavement/ syrup, Percocet, hit an eight a day will leave you broke depressed and emotionally
vacant,"(ll.45–46). The rhyme in this line would be pavement and vacant which is also a forced rhyme. He also states that if you become addicted
to drugs you can go broke, go into a type of depression and become emotionally vacant in other words destroy you. Another use of end rhyme in this
song would be, "surprise, you know the drill/ trapped in a box, to climb record sales/ follow the formula violence, drugs and sex sells/ so we try to
sound like someone else"(ll.40–43). In this line the words that would rhyme would be sales, sells, and else. Macklemore is also stating the fakeness of
today's rappers who tend to rap about drugs and things they haven't done when they should be rapping about their lives and struggles they have been
through. Macklemore uses end rhyme to tie in certain lines that should be read together. Media can really affect how someone thinks or looks at drugs
and Macklemore helps explain this trough this song by using allusions, repetitions, and end rhyme. This also applies to my life by

My Night
I slept restless Sunday night. I could not stop thinking about the town and returning the shadow. I was afraid someone would catch us and my
mother find out about it. I walked over to the closet and I grabbed a cover and extra pillow. Carefully, I slid the cover and pillow under the blanket
laying on the bed. I firmly shaped the cover and pillow to represent me sleeping. Hoping if my mom would enter the room, that, she would think I
was sound to sleep. It was a beautiful night. The full moon shining through the dark midnight sky and the stars so far away glimmers into space. We
had agreed that James would pick us up on Monday morning by 1:00 a.m. By the time his carriage had arrived at my house, I was so tired. After I
heard James, carriage pulled up to our home, I creeped out of my room. I walked slowly to the door; and, open it and walked out on the front porch.
When I saw everyone, I put my finger on my lips and said, "SHH." I got in the carriage and James rode us away. "You do not look so good, Chelsea.
Your eyes are watery and red." Cindy said. I replied, "I did not sleep too well. I got out of bed more than once thinking about everything that happened."
"I know how you feel, Chelsea. I had a hard time sleeping too." Carl said. "I slept like a rock." Paul replied. "It does not matter about our sleep; we are
going to fix what we started." James said. "You are so insensitive, James." Cindy replied. "A matter of fact James, it was your idea anyway the

February 8, 2015 Groundhog Day Film Critique
The primary goal of this paper is to explain in genre theory and thoroughly describe an analysis and attributes of the selected film, Groundhog Day
(1993). Specifically, the objectives of the paper are as follows: 1) to provide a short summary of the film; 2) to interpret the aesthetic choices in the
chosen feature–length film; and 3) to provide a third convention from the selected film and explain in detail how this film impacted society. For this
purpose, the paper is divided into three sections. Each section corresponds to each of the aforementioned goals.

However, with the small and gentle effort pumped into the movie by two well–known film masters, it led to the most appealing movie ever thought of
by the two. Groundhog Day is an amusing and sweet surprising combination. Although the term appealing is an understatement of Murray's style of
humor, Groundhog Day is a thriller thanks to Murray's comic hostility. He combined the bitter and the sweet, which is an essential recipe for making a
pleasant film. The themes and stylistic devices employed in Groundhog Day are key ingredients of its success as a comedy film.
The film's mise–en–scene is intentional, combining both design and composition to create a unified perfect viewing experience. During the final
scene where Phil wakes up to a new day following continually woken up to the same day, Phil is skeptical at first when he wakes up but is later
overwhelmed with joy. The elements in the scene resonate to the rest of the film. The framing and movements of figures in the film are in perfect

Groundhog Day Religion
BODDHISATTVA PATH IN GROUNDHOG DAY
For an Eastern religion, Buddhism has been one of the most prevalent religions to be featured in Western culture from the books of Jack Kerouac to
yoga centers to cafes inspired by temples. Hollywood movies as well, have been affected by the Buddhist ideology profoundly. Groundhog Day
(1993), a movie about an egoistical weatherman stuck in a day, is a great example of a commercial movie with a Buddhist agenda. In the movie, the
protagonist Phil Connors (Murray) realizes that he's stuck in an endless cycle and goes through phases to come up with different ways break the cycle.

Phil Coleman tries to save a homeless man, to get wholesome karma and relieve his consciousness. However, no matter what day it is, he fails to

this very noble. However, he learns that he should not any point get attached to any want, even if it is a noble desire. After he is done with getting over
attachments, he is ready to reach nirvana, or break the samsara. Through many days and lifetimes, with enough good karma and realization of the truth,
Phil finally breaks the cycle and moves on to tomorrow. This can count the nirvana of the movie's world, in which he is free of the conventions and

A Point Of Return In Nietzsche's Groundhog Day
1.Tanksley reports about her young life up to this point that "if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing." Can you use this as a point of
departure for o Defining Nietzsche's eternal return and showing how it works?
1.NietzscheВґs eternal return is similar to the 1993 film Groundhog Day where a news reporter got stuck into a time loop reliving the same day over
and over until breaking the loop. The contrast here, however, is the film focusing on the reporterВґs unhappiness of reliving the same day everyday,
whereas Nietzsche philosophized that every decision and action made would be the setup to be relived from the changing point when it all began; the
cycle would be repeated when the person dies and then is immediately reborn into the point of change. In terms of the film Groundhog Day, the main
character "died" at the end of each day to be reborn at the point his alarm clock went off in the morning. (Faust, 2012) o Characterizing Tanksley's
professional life as one fit for approval by Nietzsche's eternal return?
1.In TanksleyВґs case, she believes that she has found her principle passion for life and would be content to repeat it lifetime after lifetime. For her, it
is what fuels her to live. In NietzscheВґs law of the eternal return, each re–lived life is an exact copy of the original without being changed – in other
words, living in an unknown time loop or "stuck in a rut". Tanksley states that she would be perfectly happy to repeat (be reborn) as

Why Is Groundhog Day Popular
Mina Khalil Professor McClean ESL100 12 April 2018 Groundhog Day Popularity There are a lot of movies succeeded and people liked them, but
after years people forget them, and that is because there wasn't a strong message or theme behind these movies. For Groundhog Day it was different
because the strong message the actors they stayed popular for almost 20 years. According to this, Groundhog Day has remained popular until now
because of the story, the combination of the actors and the characters, and the theme. One reason for Groundhog Day to remain popular until now is
the story of the movie. First, the concept of the movie makes it popular and watchable. The repetition of the day that the character faces is significant
because it is mysterious... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The different genres make people more attracted to the movie and watchable. The first genre that was used is the comedy. The comical elements
are a huge part of the movie, for example, the scene when Phil steals groundhog and the intense police chase is an example of humor scene. Also,
when the director makes look like the groundhog is driving, and when Phil told groundhog that his driving is "not bad for a quadruped," that is a
very good comedy scene. Another important genre that is used is fantasy. For example, Phil keeps repeating the same day over and over, no matter
what he is doing he can't move to the second day. Also, Phil tries to kill himself multiple and that enforced how Phil's experiences were totally
unrealistic; making it a fantasy. In addition, Phil begins to believe that he is a god, since he can't die, he repeats the same day over and over, and
people can't people can't remember anything happened in the previous, so since this type of experience in unreal, that is why the movie is considered
under a fantasy genre. In conclusion, the concept of repeating the same day over and over and the different genres that are used make the movie
attentive and wonderful to watch. ("Groundhog Day Genre."

Phil Connors 'Suffering In The Film Groundhog Day'
The 1993 movie Groundhog Day directed by Harold Ramis portrays the journey of self–centered weatherman Phil Connors who becomes trapped in a
time loop and must repeatedly relive the same day. Connors' ordeal highlights the Buddhist principle that life is dominated by hardship. However, Phil's
distressing experiences enable him to change his ways and become naturally happy. Phil's transformation illustrates the Buddhist concept that suffering
is actually an avenue to the bliss of nirvana . While in the beginning of Groundhog Day Phil focuses on fulfilling his selfish desires, he cannot achieve
happiness until he stops pursuing his wants and improves as a person, which allows him to reach a state of enlightenment.

Groundhog Day Existentialism Analysis
Groundhog's Day's Take On Existentialism
A weatherman, Phil Collins, not content with his life, reluctantly heads to Punxsutawney in Pennsylvania to report on the Groundhog Day festival
with Rita, his producer and Larry, a cameraman. Once he gets there, he gives his report and as they are trying to leave, they get caught up in a
blizzard, where he is given the choice to either die in the blizzard or to stay in Punxsutawney. Reluctantly, he chooses to stay in Punxsutawney until
the blizzard is over. Much to his dismay when he gets up the next day, the events are eerily similar to the first day. Day after day he realizes that
this isn't deja vu, he is reliving this day over and over again. In the beginning he uses this to his advantage through many escapades like driving
recklessly, stealing money and seducing women. His most important endeavor is trying to make Rita fall in love with him; yet day after day he
fails to seduce her because of his egotistic ways. Seeing as though he will never get out of Groundhog's Day, he decides to kill himself multiple
times yet he still wakes up in the same spot, unharmed, with the radio playing the same song on the same day. Over time, he changes his behavior
and becomes more positive; he is kinder to people, does his job well and tries to save the life of an old man. Through this new outlook on life of being
positive, selfless and compassionate towards others, he finally breaks this curse of reliving the same day over and over again and wakes up on
February 3rd with Rita by his side.
One major existential theme that we discussed in class comes from Jean–Paul Sartre's Existentialism is the notion that "existence precedes essence"
(Sartre). This challenges the previous notion of religious beliefs where essence precedes existence. Sartre says, "it means, that first of all, man exists,
turn up, appears on the scene, and only afterwards, defines himself. If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he
is nothing. Only afterward he will be something, and he himself will have made what he will be" (Sartre 345). What Sartre means by this is that we as
humans are first thrown into existence by just living on Earth but it is our actions that we

Film Analysis Of Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is a movie about a meteorologist, Phil, who has to travel to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day
celebration. Before traveling to the festival, Phil predicts that the blizzard scheduled to hit the area was no longer a threat. However, the blizzard does
hit the area and, worst than the blizzard, is Phil realization that he is stuck in a time loop where he relieves the same day, February 2, over and over
(Gilbert, 2013). This paper will focus on analyzing four reoccurring scenes that take place in a restaurant.
Scene 1: 27:00
In the first restaurant scene, the movie starts by displaying an image of the restaureant. Once inside the restaurant the waitress asks Phil and Rita
whether they wanted more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shortly after, Larry comes into the restaurant to inform Phil and Rita that they must head back to Pennsylvania since they have wrapped up
productions. However, Phil reinteracts that he will not be leaving with the Rita and Larry because the storm that he (Phil) had predicted earlier as not
hitting the area will do so. To this point both Rita and Larry respond with disbelief and remind Phil of his prediction earlier.
Scene 2: 35:55 The second scene starts with the table full of food and drinks. Then the camera focuses on Phil whose demeaner is now less
aggressive and shows less anxienty. One of the clock on the wall still shows 5:55. The camera really focuses on Rita and Phill and customers who
are directly behind them. Unlike the previous scene, the waiters are not immediately in direct view. However, Phil and Rita's waitress approaches
them with the offer for more coffee, which Phil accepts and informs her to bring more coffee. Immidately after this, the camera zooms out and the
audience is able to see the entire scene. It is now that one can see all of the customers who were in the previous scene. The mood in the restaurant
quickly changes because a food of tray drops.
Soon after, the camera focuses on Rita and Phil. In this scene, Rita is seems a bit more sarcastic than Phil. This may be due to the fact that Phil has
accepted his fate of being stuck in this repeated loop. This is also

Groundhog Day Research Paper
It was a scene of joy as children and adults looked towards Shubenacadie Sam's enclosure, where the tiny woodchuck came out to seek his shadow.
The mammal looked all around him, to no avail. As the crowd cheered, the Head Keeper tells us about this occasion. "It's the best time of the year,"
stated Lola Kike, "All of us wait for this one day. It's so exciting." Sam and his Ontario counterpart Wiarton Willie both forecast the next few weeks'
weather on February 2 each year.
Groundhog Day occurs on February 2nd each year. Groundhogs in North America come out of their burrows and look for their shadows. Legend has
it that if a groundhog sees his shadow; winter will stay for 6 more weeks. If no shadow is seen, then there will be an early spring.

Characters In The Movie Groundhog Day Vs. Happy Death Day
Groundhog Day vs. Happy Death Day Groundhog Day is a 1993 movie starring Bill Murray. It is a Drama/Romance directed by Harold Ramis rated
PG. Groundhog Day was so popular it was even made into a musical in 2016 composed by Tim Minchin. Happy Death Day, however, is a 2017
mystery/thriller. It is rated PG 13 and is directed by Christopher B. Landon. Although Happy Death Day is assumed to be just a scary version of
Groundhog Day, these two movies have more differences and similarities in characters, situations, and setting than people might think. The main
character of both movies begin the storyline as self–centered people. They are rude and have no concern for the people around them. The main
character from Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman is a blonde sorority sister in college. In the beginning of the movie, Tree wakes up, hungover, after
getting drunk from a party the previous night which makes her late to a lecture. This indicates that she is irresponsible and what most people consider
to be the average partying college student. The main character in Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he's above everyone else.
In the movie this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and live a life of solitude. One thing these two characters have
in common is falling for the people that they thought they never would in the beginning. Tree falls for Carter Davis, the college student whose dorm
she woke up in after the party. Phil Connors falls in love with Rita Hanson, a news producer who works in the same studio as him. These Two
characters are stuck in incredibly similar situations with very slight differences. They are both trapped in a time loop that shows some sort of relevance
in their lives and they have to do figure out what they need do in order to move on to the next day. In the beginning they simply think it's deja vu,
but after they realize they will always wake up to the same day, even if they die, they begin to enjoy immortality and use it to their advantage. In her
time loop, Tree Gelbman wakes up to the sound of university bells in another college student's (Carter Davis's) dorm room after a party. She walks

Essay On Groundhog Day
I've a huge advocate of having a palate cleanser read in between or after reading too much of a certain genre or type of book. Thus, after reading a few
books set in and about life in Israel, I felt the immense craving for a fluffy contemporary read. And Jessica Brody's A Week of Mondays was just what I
needed.
Are you guys, familiar with the movie, Groundhog Day? The movie basically is about a guy who is forced to repeat the same day again and again
until he finally gets it right. A Week of Mondays has a similar premise however in this case its sixteen

the reaction any ordinary person would have to her situation.
Jessica Brody is back in her element with A Week of Mondays, a feel good YA contemporarynovel and it's the perfect read if you are in need of a

Groundhog Day Sparknotes
Phill Connors (Bill Murray) was a weatherman from Pittsburgh's Channel 9 who has been going to the festival of Groundhog Day located in
Punxsutawney for the past 3 years companied by his two crew members, Rita (Andie Macdowell) the producer and Larry (Chris Elliot) the
cameraman. Little did he know that he would encounter a lifechanging experience in his 4th year. Unfortunately, Phil could not make his way back to
Pittsburgh due to the heavy blizzard that occurred so Phil and his crew had no option left but to spend another night in Punxsutawney, PA. Phil woke
up the next morning to face the exact Groundhog Day that he encountered yesterday, he used the time loop for his benefit in the beginning but soon

Instead, Phil used the never ending February 2 to his advantage and patiently get to know Rita more which he never did before this incident
happened because all he cared about was himself. Although committing suicide is completely unacceptable, it is not a surprise if Phil attempted to
end his life and he was very determined to. Phil tried various ways from driving a car down a deep mining site to electrifying himself. This explains
that Phil would do anything to get what he wants and as he get to know more about Rita, he was secretly falling for her and Rita was not the kind
of woman that would easily fall for a guy as she was only interested in a serious and long lasting relationship. Phil Connors has the personality of a
selfish man. This was shown in the movie when he approached a stranger named Nancy and proceeded to ask personal questions about herself so that
he can use the answers the very next day to get the chance of sleeping with Nancy. He then managed to sleep with Nancy and definitely deceived her
when she asked whether this was just a one–night stand, and he simply replied "On the contrary Nancy. I love you" This shows Phil's selfish side
because he was using Nancy just for his advantage and treated her like an

The tradition of the Groundhog Day holiday gives hope to people all around the world that the seemingly endless dark days of winter are coming
to end. Phil Connors dreads the thought of covering this boring story of a rodent "seeing his shadow" for the fourth year in a row. He begins the
movie with a very negative outlook on life and is forced to continue reliving the same (to him) boring, tiresome day over and over. Buddhists look at
each moment as a fresh and new opportunity; this is the attitude Phil Connors needed to embrace to move past this day. Connors was trapped in his
repetitive life; he couldn't escape his past until he could see new chances and opportunities in his own life. Phil (the groundhog) is said to predict the
length of winter based on his ability to see his shadow. The legend says the forces within nature (the sun and the groundhog) play a role in the

Phil Connors: Wagged As A Weatherman
In the beginning of the movie, Phil Connors was promptly introduced as a charming yet self–absorbed character who worked as a weatherman. Part of
his job was to attend and report about the annual Groundhog Day festival at Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. After tediously reporting about the festival,
Connors continued with the rest of his day. However, when it was time to leave Punxsutawney, a spontaneous blizzard caused him and his team, Larry
and Rita, to stay and wait until the winter storm stopped. This situation greatly irritated Connors and impacted the rest of his day negatively.
Eventually, he woke up and soon discovered that it was Groundhog Day again and that all the events he already experienced were repeating. This
confused him at first but he soon took advantage of this time loop by being selfish. For example, he stole money from the bank and hooked up with
a woman. However, Connors ultimately became bored with his endeavors and even asked two locals, "What would you do if you were stuck in one

Phil found out that he was much better off if he just became kind and helped others. Some examples of this is when he befriended Larry, saved a kid
falling from a tree, and fixed an elderly woman's car. Connors also helped an old homeless man and found out that he was destined to die on
Groundhog Day. He tried to save the man multiple times like performing CPR and nourishing him, but his efforts proved to be in vain. This taught him
that there are some events and situations that he can never change or

Film Analysis Of The Film Groundhog Day
Title: Groundhog Day Film analysis
The film Groundhog Day is about a local weather man Phil, that travels to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania for a news coverage of the holiday
Groundhog Day. Phil finds himself in a time warp reliving the events of groundhog over and over. In the beginning Phil spends each day focused on
sex and money as the movie progress Phil finds himself spending every waking moment trying to impress his producer Rita. When that ends in failure
Phil starts to care for the people around town doing anything possible to make their lives better, from saving lives to changing tires. In the end Rita
falls in love with the true Phil Connor and the time warp ends. Throughout the film Phil comes to terms to who is he really is. He finds Authenticity
and no longer struggles with self–identity.
Phil no longer had responsibilities in life he learned early on that no one would remember anything but him, that no matter what he did he would still
wake up on February 2nd at 6:00am. This lead Phil to do outrages this suck as steal money and drive on railroad trucks not caring about his life and
who he was. Jean–Paul Sartre said, "Life has no meaning the moment you lose the illusion of being eternal." Life had no meaning to Phil once he
knew he would be stuck living the same day. When Phil didn't live for himself life becomes dull, boring and lonely, he had to deal with the
consequences of this inauthenticity. Phil came to realization that if he could not change his life today maybe he could change other's.
In the beginning Phil lived life inauthentically, he lived for society and followed what society thought had power. Phil did not change in a second even
his first few days experiencing Groundhog Day over and over he still lived for society. Phil went out of his way to flaunt his money and make
advances to sleep with women, two things in society's view men must have to be liked or have power. When Phil begins to realize this, he becomes
lonely and commits suicide everyday knowing he still must relive Groundhog Day, instead of living a miserable life Phil decides to do good deeds
from changing tires to saving lives. He began to have good faith, he became authentic. He lived for himself not society he began

Groundhog Day Comparison
The movie Groundhog Day shares many parallels with the book "Flight" by Sherman Alexie. Both Phil and Zits react similarly to the whole
situation going through stages of confusion, happiness, desperation, and acceptance until finally they have learned their lesson and become better
people as a whole. There are some differences though. Zits spends the beginning of his experience trying to come up with a logical explanation and

Phil Connors And Groundhog Day
At the heart of the two acclaimed films by the names of Groundhog Day and Solaris (1972) lie two characters who are initially unpleasant
protagonists. Phil Connors is a news reporter with a tremendous ego and lack of respect for all those around him. Kris Kelvin begins the film by
disrespecting and discrediting Burton, a Solaris ship crew member who saw the visions Kelvin would encounter soon. Although quick judgment could
be made about their characters, further into their respective films they show their true hearts and passion despite very different circumstances. Kelvin
is placed in another planet where he finds a replica of his late wife which instills an ethical dilemma of her reality. Connors is placed in a continuous

There is no comedic relief in Solaris. It also tackles an issue of what is regarded as a human and what is not, meanwhile Groundhog Day is more
individualized to the protagonist of Connors' actions. Solaris' philosophical twist can be attributed to Derek Parfit's Teletransporter Thought
Experiment which is along the lines of the science fiction in the movie. If a traveler is both on Mars and Earth but one is perishing on Earth, is the
replica on Mars a continuation of their existence or an entirely different entity? (Parfit) This same struggle is exemplified in Solaris through the
appearance of Hari. Kelvin and the two crew members did not know how to approach her at first and did not consider her human. However, through
more advanced displays of emotion and connection with the original person she was, it captured the romance her and Kelvin shared in actuality
(Tumanov). When she was simply just a facial replica, Kelvin even took to killing his own wife. Our morals dictate that when this person shows
character similar to their reflection, we gain empathy and view their recreation as representative of their

The Consequences Of Control In The Movie Groundhog Day
Some things we have can be control but, not others. We try our best to control others, but not all of them we cannot control. Things we control are
opinion like desire, dislike, and happiness. It takes time and many chances to change yourself. Our own actions can cause a reaction to another
person. In one scene, he is at a bar drinking and he expresses his despair to two drinking friends in a bar. Phil asks them "What if there were no
tomorrow?" One guy answers "That would mean there will be no consequences, there will be no hangovers, we could do whatever we wanted. "At
first Phil responds with confusion because he thinks he is immortal or god. So, he wants to test it by risks his life by eating a lot of junk food,
stealing money, seducing the local women, and having fun by drowning his sense of hopelessness. No matter what he does, even he kills himself
multiple times, time will reset itself and he will wake up as if nothing had happened and nobody will remember.
On the movie Groundhog Day, which shows a character who thinks he is better than anybody else that he is stuck on the same day, so he can discover
that being that type of person can be change. In the movie a self–consumed TV weatherman from Pittsburgh, Phil goes to Punxsutawney to report on the
famed groundhog living there. His new producer Rita and long–time cameraman Larry join him. Phil spends the night in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania,
where he does not want to go and does not want to stay in a cheap hotel to sleep in. Phil need to do a broadcast the next day about the annual ritual of
the "Groundhog Day," which celebrated the day when a groundhog wakes up and sees its shadow, it means winter is over. From the very beginning,
Phil hates the assignment, hates the town, being very rude and irritated by Rita, Larry, and anybody else that talks to him. He wakes up the next
morning annoyed that must do the news. He does his story and is very annoyed to discover that he is trapped in Punxsutawney for a second night
because of a snowstorm that he did not predict comes when they were leaving. He tries his best to get out of the town by saying he is a celebrity.

How Is Sisyphus Similar
1). Phil's scenario is similar to Sisyphus' because they are both stuck in a situation where they have to repeat doing the same thing over and over.
For example, Phil keeps reliving Groundhog Day while Sisyphus has to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. Another example of how Phil's and
Sisyphus' scenarios are similar is how they got themselves into repeating the same day over. Phil was rude to people and did not enjoy the little
aspects of life during his stay and news casting in Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day. Unlike Phil, Sisyphus created many crimes that the gods did
not appreciate. Phil's scenario is different from Sisyphus' because Phil got to change the way he wanted to act and the things he wanted to do. For
example, after he realized that he was going to keep reliving Groundhog's Day, he decided to take advantage of the situation. On one of the days Phil
decided to drive foolishly around town with two drunks that he met at a bar and ends up in jail. Since he is reliving the same day many times, he
decides to steal money from the money truck. Sisyphus however just gets stuck with continuously rolling the rock up the hill and he has to deal with
his "hour of consciousness". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the movie Phil takes advantage of reliving the same day but then realizes there is not much more he can do, so he tries to kill himself
in multiple ways. But near the end we see a change in Phil, he is much kinder to people. He starts to embrace what is happening to him, instead of
thinking of himself all the time he starts to do service for others in the community. We can see that he struggles with the consequence he is faced
with but in the end we see that Phil changes his attitude in the way he sees life. He gets the girl, he gets the happiness he was looking for, and he
breaks the cycle. Existentialism is demonstrated in the movie when we can visually see that Phil can change his view towards life so he could live a

Determinism In Groundhog Day
Free Will, Determinism, and Compatibilism in Groundhog Day As all philosophical theories show controversial view points, the same is true for the
concept of free will and determinism. Some people believe free will may be true, whereas others believe in determinism. However, some people
believe it could be possible for life to include both free will and determinism, which is called compatibilism. Free will is the philosophical idea that all
choices in life are ultimately free. Determinism is the idea that every event has a cause, including human thinking and acting. Compatibilism is the idea
that acting freely results from past experiences and desires. Provided that different situations throughout life prove probable evidence for both free ...

Free will and determinism are compatible because a person acts freely according to desires determined by their past history (Rachels 116).
Freedom requires determinism in that, "free does not mean uncaused. Rather, it means something like uncoerced" (Rachels 117). This type of
freedom may better be looked at as control. Some actions are beyond a persons control, such as sneezing. A person cannot be blamed for sneezing,
but they can be blamed if they do not cover their face when sneezing. This is a freedom of control, based on the determined fact that a person
cannot stop a sneeze. In essence, "because free will is typically taken to be a necessary condition of moral responsibility, compatibilism is sometimes
expressed as a thesis about the compatibility between moral responsibility and determinism" (McKenna). Compatibilism fits perfectly within the
Groundhog Day storyline. As Phil knows what actions are determined upon that day, he also makes some choices dependent upon his desires. His
number one desire is to get out of the loop and to do so he knows he has to make the choice to become an all–around better person. As Rachels says,
"We are as free as a feather tossed in the wind. We are subject to prior cause and controlled by the laws of physics" (117). In other words, people do
possess some freedom, but not in a form of complete chaos. There are factors that influence a persons

Analysis Of Phil Connors 'From The Movie Groundhog Day'
When Phil Connors comes to Punxsutawney, PA to report on Groundhog Day, he is a person of whom Thrasymachus would be proud. Here is some
evidence from the movie. In Thrasymachus's view, happiness is completely derived from the fulfillment of pleasures. Phil follows his appetites, only
completing actions for the desires that follow. When he first realizes his situation he begins eating very unhealthy food, drinking, and smoking. Astime
passes he starts using this repetition of days to learn about people and the town, so that he can get whatever he wants. In one case he uses his
knowledge to pretend he knew a woman from a high school English class, making it almost effortless to influence her to sleep with him.
Eventually, there was a change in how Phil acted, and he began to follow Aristotle's recipe for happiness. In the Aristotelian viewpoint, pleasure is
not the meaning of life because it does not fulfill the two requirements for a chief good. Aristotle writes, "Since there are evidently more than one end,
and we choose some of these for the sake of something else, clearly not all ends are final ends; but the chief good is evidently something final."
(Nicomachean Ethics, I, 7) Therefore, the chief ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phil changes after convincing Rita that he is reliving the same day and she tells him to make the most of it. He starts allowing reason and character
to weigh in on his appetites, thus following the path to Ultimate Happiness. By listening to these sides of his soul, Phil begins to show both Moral
and Intellectual virtues. His moral virtue increases as he begins helping the townspeople including: a boy falling from a tree, old ladies with a flat tire,
a homeless man, and a man who is choking. Intellectually, Phil pursues the piano and masters French along with French poetry, allowing him to
prosper in a rational sense. All of these examples show how Phil begins to live a virtuous

The Movie ' Groundhog Day '
Becoming Moral Every life lived has an element of unpredictability. Sometimes, people have bad days that they would rather forget as soon as it's
over. Other times, people have great days that they wish they could relive once more. But in Groundhog Day, an unruly news anchor named Phil is
forced to relive a single day in his life. After the initial fear and confusion dissipates, Phil explores different lifestyles in the struggle to obtain happiness
and to find himself. Stuck at a fixed point in history, Phil experiments with different lifestyles without experiencing any long–term repercussions. The
first life he tests out is the life of pleasure. In the movie, we see him overindulge in the two senses that Aristotle warns against: taste, as seen in the
diner scene when Phil surrounds himself with food, and touch, shown through his night with Nancy and his attempts to get with Rita. However, the
life of sensual pleasure alone brings him no happiness and, in fact, is a lifestyle Aristotle advocates against. Sensual pleasures are temporary and
imperfect. People who highlight sensual pleasures, such as sex and indulgence in food, emphasize means rather than ends; they exploit necessary
processes for the small degree of pleasure it brings them, subsequently depriving themselves of the happiness and pleasure they could have received in
the end. For example, a glutton does not get pleasure out of nurturing their bodies, but from the food itself. As a result, gluttons are

Groundhog Day Essay
In the movie "Groundhog Day," the main character Phil faces the nightmare of waking up on the same day at the same time. In the beginning, this
causes Groundhog Day to have the same events over and over again. However, after living each day the same way, Phil decides to change the events
of the day in both good and bad ways. Through these changes he finally learns how to achieve his biggest goal: winning over Rita.
The movie begins with a small town news reporter, Phil. Him and his crew go to the city of Punxsutawney to cover Groundhog Day. Passing the day as
his usual self – a jerk – he goes to bed. When he wakes up the next morning to the sound of his alarm and runs into the same people, he begins to
realize that it is Groundhog Day again. On the first day when Phil wakes up, the alarm song was the unconditioned stimulus and waking up was the
unconditioned response. Soon after the song, a man began to speak; this became the neutral stimulus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The movie Groundhog Day, is labeled as a comedy, but in fact it is a story about love, a story about Phil's transformation based on love. Phil his
character is forced to repeat the same day over and over again. He goes through many phases in this movie and in the end changing his persona. When
analyzing love, it becomes apparent that much has been written about it. In fact, love has been broken down into different phases such as Eros, Philia
and Agape. Being trapped in Groundhog Day has significant effects on Phil's practices of these three kinds of love Eros, Philia and Agape.

One of the most remarkable scenes in the movie, is when he realizes that despite the entrapment of himself, he couldn't control what happened in life
at the end of the day. The same homeless man he ignored the whole time is dying right in front of him and when he realizes that the man will
eventually die. He uses his entrapment to make the man feel special, even though the homeless man has no idea he is dying, Phil takes him to the
restaurant to eat all he wants. He also takes him to the doctor and keeps him warm through the cold nights, but no matter what Phil does, he can't
control death. That's when it finally hits him. No matter how powerful he felt because of the entrapment, he wasn't able to keep the old man from
dying. Phil showed his emotions by caring for others.
The most important effect on Phil being trapped in Groundhog Day is his practice of Agape. According to the article, "Right From the Heart,
What is Love Anyways", agape love is unconditional love. It is a choice made to love another person whether they love us back or not. Although
it is easy to recognize Phil's practice of Eros and Philia, Phil's practice of Agape is developed until the end of the movie. Phil had no regard towards
agape love in the beginning of the movie. He never really cared for no one in any way, he didn't even love himself enough to know when he was
damaging his own self. As an example,

Essay About Groundhog Day
One February 1st 2016, there was a marathon of Groundhog Day. I watched the movie once but kept the television on the same channel throughout the
rest of the day. I enjoyed the movie I thought it was a little corny at times, like when Phil kidnaps the groundhog and drives off a cliff. I enjoyed the
overall message of the film, indicating that the use of the time loop for evil purposes would only result in the same, dull, day. But once the power is
harnessed for good then the curse will break. The way that I most related this movie to my life was how different actions presented different
consequences. Naturally doing something bad is easier and more fun than doing the right thing. But in the end what comes around goes around, and I
will be rewarded for doing good. In the movies case Phil got Rita. Also having a good attitude about life and the situation that I am currently in

Roger Ebert On Groundhog Day
The poetry of Rumi and the review of Chicago Sun–Times writer Roger Ebert on Groundhog Day both agree the view of human growth is determined
by the heart and not the body. Rumi believes that a person has to go through two worlds (heaven and hell) to give up their life and become a better
person. According to page 30, lines 1–4, Rumi says, "To dance is not to jump to your feet and rise painlessly in the air like dust. To rise above both
worlds is to dance in the blood of your pain and give up your life." Rumi believes that victory is not only accomplished when the path taken to solve
a situation is the facilitated one. But, that victory should be achieved when a person is able to get back on their feet and improve themselves. Rumi
establishes pathos when he uses words such as "pain", "blood", and "life" which evoke strong... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To use such words, Rumi expresses the different point of views on life. He intends to make the reader realize that sacrifice is worth the pain and

Sun–Times writer Roger Ebert on Groundhog Day. Ebert believes that a person needs to go through something devastatingly drastic to actually learn
from the experience. According to the third paragraph, Roger Ebert says, "The movie, as everyone knows, is about a man who finds himself living

and bitterness, revolt and despair, suicidal self–destruction and cynical recklessness, he begins to do something that is alien to his nature. He begins to

Free Will And Determinism In Groundhog Day
In the award–winning movie Groundhog Day, we are presented with a peculiar situation where Phil (Bill Murray) relives the same day over and
over. As the film progresses Phil is fathomed by the events occurring and lives out each day as he pleases. Correspondingly, there are zero
consequences for his actions. Death, crime nor love has the ability to change the never ending DГ©jГ vu that Phil relives every day. At the same time;
Phil has no free will in reliving Groundhog day, but does he have free will on his actions and how he spends his time on that day? Or is each action
pre–determined? These are interesting concepts that will bring us to the issues that will be discussed throughout this paper. Do we truly have free will

Review Of The Movie ' Groundhog Day '
Director and producer Harold Ramis filmed the infamous movie, Groundhog Day, a film based on an arrogant weatherman named Phil that detests
Punxsutawney where groundhogs day is held but must relive this day for what feels like an eternity. Viewing this movie from a philosophical
standpoint, the viewer can relate Phil to Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism. Phil is similar to Buddha because he experiences the three marks of
reality, and the four noble truths. Using a philosophical view the audience can see how in order not dwell on the past or dream of the future and
individual must concentrate on the present. Phil is melancholy man, he hides behind a facade of ignorance and arrogance but deep down he hates
himself and even mentions so in the film, Phil is a half–glass empty type of man. Once his reincarnation begins Phil is stuck in a phase of denial.
During his eternity in Punxsutawney Phil, similar to Buddha, sees the three marks of reality. The first mark of reality Phil encounters is annica,
everything is constantly changing, impermanence. Phil is stuck in a time loop but he realizes he can alter little things throughout his day which leads
to different outcomes. For example, in the beginning of the movie once Phil realizes he can relive his day any way he pleases Phil performs pleasure

determine when to plant their crops. However, since badgers were scarce in Pennsylvania, the groundhog took over this duty. Tradition holds that if
the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd it will be scared and return to its burrow, signaling that there will be six more weeks of winter. If his
shadow is not seen then spring is on its way (Groundhog). The famous Punxsutawney Phil, gets his name from the Indian name for the location
"ponksad–uteney" which means "the town of sandflies" (Groundhog 1017).
Prior to Groundhog Day German settlers, performed the tradition of Candlemas Day (Groundhog 2017). Candlemas Day involved clergy blessing
candles and distributing them to everyone in the dark cold days of winter, the people placed a lighted candle in each window of their home
(Groundhog 2017). If on February 2nd the sun came out there would be six more Yohe 2

Groundhog Day Speech

  • 1. Groundhog Day Speech Every year on February 2, the city of Puttingneg, North Dakota, and surrounding cities celebrate Groundhog Day. The tradition is if the groundhog sees its shadow, it will be frightened and return to its burrow, indicating there will be a longer winter. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, then spring is on the way. In 1935, my friends and I sought to change the outcome of the weather by stealing the groundhog's shadow from the Puttingneg city zoo. It was a good idea at the time. I soon find out that it was a mistake. It made me realize there are positive or negative consequences to our actions. People have been talking about the day the groundhog shadow did not cast for many years. The rumors about his shadow changed during different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay about Macklemore Otherside Analysis Otherside–Macklemore "We live on the cusp of death thinking that it won't be us," (l.32). Macklemore is saying that people think that they will not die from doing drugs. In this song Macklemore is stating that drugs can be really addictive also he states that drugs can really mess you up and how media influences you to do drugs, for example rappers like Lil Wayne which he talks about in this song and Wiz Kalifa. Strong poetic devices permeate throughout Macklemore's song Otherside for example he uses allusions, repetition and end rhyme. An example of a poetic device that Macklemore uses in this song is allusion. One allusion Macklemore uses is "Groundhog Day life repeat each time"(l.59). Macklemore mentions the movie Groundhog Day the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is also saying to keep him on this high of making his music instead of using drugs to get high. Macklemore uses repetition in his songs to help emphasize what he is talking about. One other poetic device that Macklemore uses in his song is end rhyme. One form of end rhyme in his song would be, "there's no way to glorify this pavement/ syrup, Percocet, hit an eight a day will leave you broke depressed and emotionally vacant,"(ll.45–46). The rhyme in this line would be pavement and vacant which is also a forced rhyme. He also states that if you become addicted to drugs you can go broke, go into a type of depression and become emotionally vacant in other words destroy you. Another use of end rhyme in this song would be, "surprise, you know the drill/ trapped in a box, to climb record sales/ follow the formula violence, drugs and sex sells/ so we try to sound like someone else"(ll.40–43). In this line the words that would rhyme would be sales, sells, and else. Macklemore is also stating the fakeness of today's rappers who tend to rap about drugs and things they haven't done when they should be rapping about their lives and struggles they have been through. Macklemore uses end rhyme to tie in certain lines that should be read together. Media can really affect how someone thinks or looks at drugs and Macklemore helps explain this trough this song by using allusions, repetitions, and end rhyme. This also applies to my life by ... • 3. My Night I slept restless Sunday night. I could not stop thinking about the town and returning the shadow. I was afraid someone would catch us and my mother find out about it. I walked over to the closet and I grabbed a cover and extra pillow. Carefully, I slid the cover and pillow under the blanket laying on the bed. I firmly shaped the cover and pillow to represent me sleeping. Hoping if my mom would enter the room, that, she would think I was sound to sleep. It was a beautiful night. The full moon shining through the dark midnight sky and the stars so far away glimmers into space. We had agreed that James would pick us up on Monday morning by 1:00 a.m. By the time his carriage had arrived at my house, I was so tired. After I heard James, carriage pulled up to our home, I creeped out of my room. I got out of bed more than once thinking about everything that happened." "I know how you feel, Chelsea. I had a hard time sleeping too." Carl said. "I slept like a rock." Paul replied. "It does not matter about our sleep; we are going to fix what we started." James said. "You are so insensitive, James." Cindy replied. However, with the small and gentle effort pumped into the movie by two well–known film masters, it led to the most appealing movie ever thought of by the two. Groundhog Day is an amusing and sweet surprising combination. Although the term appealing is an understatement of Murray's style of humor, Groundhog Day is a thriller thanks to Murray's comic hostility. He combined the bitter and the sweet, which is an essential recipe for making a pleasant film. The themes and stylistic devices employed in Groundhog Day are key ingredients of its success as a comedy film. The film's mise–en–scene is intentional, combining both design and composition to create a unified perfect viewing experience. During the final scene where Phil wakes up to a new day following continually woken up to the same day, Phil is skeptical at first when he wakes up but is later overwhelmed with joy. • 7. A Point Of Return In Nietzsche's Groundhog Day 1.Tanksley reports about her young life up to this point that "if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing." Can you use this as a point of departure for o Defining Nietzsche's eternal return and showing how it works? 1.NietzscheВґs eternal return is similar to the 1993 film Groundhog Day where a news reporter got stuck into a time loop reliving the same day over and over until breaking the loop. The contrast here, however, is the film focusing on the reporterВґs unhappiness of reliving the same day everyday, whereas Nietzsche philosophized that every decision and action made would be the setup to be relived from the changing point when it all began; the cycle would be repeated when the person dies and then is immediately reborn into the point of change. In terms of the film Groundhog Day, the main character "died" at the end of each day to be reborn at the point his alarm clock went off in the morning. (Faust, 2012) o Characterizing Tanksley's professional life as one fit for approval by Nietzsche's eternal return? 1.In TanksleyВґs case, she believes that she has found her principle passion for life and would be content to repeat it lifetime after lifetime. For her, it is what fuels her to live. In NietzscheВґs law of the eternal return, each re–lived life is an exact copy of the original without being changed – in other words, living in an unknown time loop or "stuck in a rut". Why Is Groundhog Day Popular Mina Khalil Professor McClean ESL100 12 April 2018 Groundhog Day Popularity There are a lot of movies succeeded and people liked them, but after years people forget them, and that is because there wasn't a strong message or theme behind these movies. For Groundhog Day it was different because the strong message the actors they stayed popular for almost 20 years. According to this, Groundhog Day has remained popular until now because of the story, the combination of the actors and the characters, and the theme. The different genres make people more attracted to the movie and watchable. The first genre that was used is the comedy. The comical elements are a huge part of the movie, for example, the scene when Phil steals groundhog and the intense police chase is an example of humor scene. Also, when the director makes look like the groundhog is driving, and when Phil told groundhog that his driving is "not bad for a quadruped," that is a very good comedy scene. Phil Connors 'Suffering In The Film Groundhog Day' The 1993 movie Groundhog Day directed by Harold Ramis portrays the journey of self–centered weatherman Phil Connors who becomes trapped in a time loop and must repeatedly relive the same day. • 10. Groundhog Day Existentialism Analysis Groundhog's Day's Take On Existentialism A weatherman, Phil Collins, not content with his life, reluctantly heads to Punxsutawney in Pennsylvania to report on the Groundhog Day festival with Rita, his producer and Larry, a cameraman. Once he gets there, he gives his report and as they are trying to leave, they get caught up in a blizzard, where he is given the choice to either die in the blizzard or to stay in Punxsutawney. Reluctantly, he chooses to stay in Punxsutawney until the blizzard is over. Much to his dismay when he gets up the next day, the events are eerily similar to the first day. Day after day he realizes that this isn't deja vu, he is reliving this day over and over again. In the beginning he uses this to his advantage through many escapades like driving recklessly, stealing money and seducing women. His most important endeavor is trying to make Rita fall in love with him; yet day after day he fails to seduce her because of his egotistic ways. Seeing as though he will never get out of Groundhog's Day, he decides to kill himself multiple times yet he still wakes up in the same spot, unharmed, with the radio playing the same song on the same day. Over time, he changes his behavior and becomes more positive; he is kinder to people, does his job well and tries to save the life of an old man. Through this new outlook on life of being positive, selfless and compassionate towards others, he finally breaks this curse of reliving the same day over and over again and wakes up on February 3rd with Rita by his side. One major existential theme that we discussed in class comes from Jean–Paul Sartre's Existentialism is the notion that "existence precedes essence" (Sartre). This challenges the previous notion of religious beliefs where essence precedes existence. Sartre says, "it means, that first of all, man exists, turn up, appears on the scene, and only afterwards, defines himself. If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward he will be something, and he himself will have made what he will be" (Sartre 345). What Sartre means by this is that we as humans are first thrown into existence by just living on Earth but it is our actions that we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To this point both Rita and Larry respond with disbelief and remind Phil of his prediction earlier. Scene 2: 35:55 The second scene starts with the table full of food and drinks. Then the camera focuses on Phil whose demeaner is now less aggressive and shows less anxienty. One of the clock on the wall still shows 5:55. The camera really focuses on Rita and Phill and customers who are directly behind them. Unlike the previous scene, the waiters are not immediately in direct view. However, Phil and Rita's waitress approaches them with the offer for more coffee, which Phil accepts and informs her to bring more coffee. Immidately after this, the camera zooms out and the audience is able to see the entire scene. It is now that one can see all of the customers who were in the previous scene. The mood in the restaurant quickly changes because a food of tray drops. Soon after, the camera focuses on Rita and Phil. In this scene, Rita is seems a bit more sarcastic than Phil. • 13. Characters In The Movie Groundhog Day Vs. Happy Death Day Groundhog Day vs. Happy Death Day Groundhog Day is a 1993 movie starring Bill Murray. It is a Drama/Romance directed by Harold Ramis rated PG. Groundhog Day was so popular it was even made into a musical in 2016 composed by Tim Minchin. Happy Death Day, however, is a 2017 mystery/thriller. It is rated PG 13 and is directed by Christopher B. Landon. Although Happy Death Day is assumed to be just a scary version of Groundhog Day, these two movies have more differences and similarities in characters, situations, and setting than people might think. The main character of both movies begin the storyline as self–centered people. They are rude and have no concern for the people around them. The main character from Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman is a blonde sorority sister in college. In the beginning of the movie, Tree wakes up, hungover, after getting drunk from a party the previous night which makes her late to a lecture. This indicates that she is irresponsible and what most people consider to be the average partying college student. The main character in Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he's above everyone else. In the movie this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and live a life of solitude. One thing these two characters have in common is falling for the people that they thought they never would in the beginning. Tree falls for Carter Davis, the college student whose dorm she woke up in after the party. Phil Connors falls in love with Rita Hanson, a news producer who works in the same studio as him. These Two characters are stuck in incredibly similar situations with very slight differences. They are both trapped in a time loop that shows some sort of relevance in their lives and they have to do figure out what they need do in order to move on to the next day. In the beginning they simply think it's deja vu, but after they realize they will always wake up to the same day, even if they die, they begin to enjoy immortality and use it to their advantage. In her time loop, Tree Gelbman wakes up to the sound of university bells in another college student's (Carter Davis's) dorm room after a party. She walks back to her sorority house, ... Both Phil and Zits react similarly to the whole situation going through stages of confusion, happiness, desperation, and acceptance until finally they have learned their lesson and become better people as a whole. There are some differences though. Zits spends the beginning of his experience trying to come up with a logical explanation and finally turning to religion to explain each body he inhabits as him having reached either heaven or hell. Phil never assumes God plays a role in this although at one point he tells Rita that "I am God." For example, Phil keeps reliving Groundhog Day while Sisyphus has to roll a rock up a hill for eternity. Another example of how Phil's and Sisyphus' scenarios are similar is how they got themselves into repeating the same day over. Phil was rude to people and did not enjoy the little aspects of life during his stay and news casting in Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day. Unlike Phil, Sisyphus created many crimes that the gods did not appreciate. Phil's scenario is different from Sisyphus' because Phil got to change the way he wanted to act and the things he wanted to do. For example, after he realized that he was going to keep reliving Groundhog's Day, he decided to take advantage of the situation. On one of the days Phil decided to drive foolishly around town with two drunks that he met at a bar and ends up in jail. • 25. Determinism In Groundhog Day Free Will, Determinism, and Compatibilism in Groundhog Day As all philosophical theories show controversial view points, the same is true for the concept of free will and determinism. Some people believe free will may be true, whereas others believe in determinism. However, some people believe it could be possible for life to include both free will and determinism, which is called compatibilism. Free will is the philosophical idea that all choices in life are ultimately free. Determinism is the idea that every event has a cause, including human thinking and acting. Compatibilism is the idea that acting freely results from past experiences and desires. Provided that different situations throughout life prove probable evidence for both free ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Free will and determinism are compatible because a person acts freely according to desires determined by their past history (Rachels 116). Freedom requires determinism in that, "free does not mean uncaused. Rather, it means something like uncoerced" (Rachels 117). This type of freedom may better be looked at as control. Some actions are beyond a persons control, such as sneezing. A person cannot be blamed for sneezing, but they can be blamed if they do not cover their face when sneezing. This is a freedom of control, based on the determined fact that a person cannot stop a sneeze. In essence, "because free will is typically taken to be a necessary condition of moral responsibility, compatibilism is sometimes expressed as a thesis about the compatibility between moral responsibility and determinism" (McKenna). Compatibilism fits perfectly within the Groundhog Day storyline. As Phil knows what actions are determined upon that day, he also makes some choices dependent upon his desires. His number one desire is to get out of the loop and to do so he knows he has to make the choice to become an all–around better person. As Rachels says, "We are as free as a feather tossed in the wind. We are subject to prior cause and controlled by the laws of physics" (117). • 26. Analysis Of Phil Connors 'From The Movie Groundhog Day' When Phil Connors comes to Punxsutawney, PA to report on Groundhog Day, he is a person of whom Thrasymachus would be proud. Here is some evidence from the movie. In Thrasymachus's view, happiness is completely derived from the fulfillment of pleasures. Phil follows his appetites, only completing actions for the desires that follow. When he first realizes his situation he begins eating very unhealthy food, drinking, and smoking. Astime passes he starts using this repetition of days to learn about people and the town, so that he can get whatever he wants. In one case he uses his knowledge to pretend he knew a woman from a high school English class, making it almost effortless to influence her to sleep with him. Eventually, there was a change in how Phil acted, and he began to follow Aristotle's recipe for happiness. In the Aristotelian viewpoint, pleasure is not the meaning of life because it does not fulfill the two requirements for a chief good. Aristotle writes, "Since there are evidently more than one end, and we choose some of these for the sake of something else, clearly not all ends are final ends; but the chief good is evidently something final." • 27. The Movie ' Groundhog Day ' Becoming Moral Every life lived has an element of unpredictability. Sometimes, people have bad days that they would rather forget as soon as it's over. Other times, people have great days that they wish they could relive once more. But in Groundhog Day, an unruly news anchor named Phil is forced to relive a single day in his life. After the initial fear and confusion dissipates, Phil explores different lifestyles in the struggle to obtain happiness and to find himself. Stuck at a fixed point in history, Phil experiments with different lifestyles without experiencing any long–term repercussions. The first life he tests out is the life of pleasure. In the movie, we see him overindulge in the two senses that Aristotle warns against: taste, as seen in the diner scene when Phil surrounds himself with food, and touch, shown through his night with Nancy and his attempts to get with Rita. However, the life of sensual pleasure alone brings him no happiness and, in fact, is a lifestyle Aristotle advocates against. Sensual pleasures are temporary and imperfect. People who highlight sensual pleasures, such as sex and indulgence in food, emphasize means rather than ends; they exploit necessary processes for the small degree of pleasure it brings them, subsequently depriving themselves of the happiness and pleasure they could have received in the end. For example, a glutton does not get pleasure out of nurturing their bodies, but from the food itself. As a result, gluttons are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

No matter how powerful he felt because of the entrapment, he wasn't able to keep the old man from dying. Phil showed his emotions by caring for others. The most important effect on Phil being trapped in Groundhog Day is his practice of Agape. According to the article, "Right From the Heart, What is Love Anyways", agape love is unconditional love. It is a choice made to love another person whether they love us back or not. Although it is easy to recognize Phil's practice of Eros and Philia, Phil's practice of Agape is developed until the end of the movie. Phil had no regard towards agape love in the beginning of the movie. He never really cared for no one in any way, he didn't even love himself enough to know when he was damaging his own self. If you've ever worried about getting someone pregnant in more than one dimension, your name may be "Paul Markov." And if you've ever been worried about being the third wheel in all of these dimensions, I've got some bad news for you, "Theo Beck." • 31. Essay About Groundhog Day One February 1st 2016, there was a marathon of Groundhog Day. I watched the movie once but kept the television on the same channel throughout the rest of the day. I enjoyed the movie I thought it was a little corny at times, like when Phil kidnaps the groundhog and drives off a cliff. I enjoyed the overall message of the film, indicating that the use of the time loop for evil purposes would only result in the same, dull, day. But once the power is harnessed for good then the curse will break. The way that I most related this movie to my life was how different actions presented different consequences. Naturally doing something bad is easier and more fun than doing the right thing. But in the end what comes around goes around, and I will be rewarded for doing good. In the movies case Phil got Rita. Also having a good attitude about life and the situation that I am currently in determines the outcome dramatically. It is easier to work with a good attitude and with people who have a good attitude. Phil didn't initially have the best attitude about what he was presented with. Following the "Groundhog Day" movie concept, the movie "Before I Fall" aimed to the large auditorium of teens and grownups by mixing the youngish and foolish teen moments and confronted the big questions of life and death, having a second chance and leaving a trace after us. The spectacular views of the woodsy mountains in a small American town are charming and catch our attention from the first minutes showing the wealthy life of the main characters. • 33. Roger Ebert On Groundhog Day The poetry of Rumi and the review of Chicago Sun–Times writer Roger Ebert on Groundhog Day both agree the view of human growth is determined by the heart and not the body. Rumi believes that a person has to go through two worlds (heaven and hell) to give up their life and become a better person. According to page 30, lines 1–4, Rumi says, "To dance is not to jump to your feet and rise painlessly in the air like dust. To rise above both worlds is to dance in the blood of your pain and give up your life." Rumi believes that victory is not only accomplished when the path taken to solve a situation is the facilitated one. But, that victory should be achieved when a person is able to get back on their feet and improve themselves. Rumi establishes pathos when he uses words such as "pain", "blood", and "life" which evoke strong... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To use such words, Rumi expresses the different point of views on life. He intends to make the reader realize that sacrifice is worth the pain and blood, because at the end you would be dancing of joy in the blood in which you fought and succeeded. This is shown in the review of Chicago Sun–Times writer Roger Ebert on Groundhog Day. Ebert believes that a person needs to go through something devastatingly drastic to actually learn from the experience. According to the third paragraph, Roger Ebert says, "The movie, as everyone knows, is about a man who finds himself living the same day over and over and over again. He is the only person in his world who knows this is happening, and after going through periods of dismay and bitterness, revolt and despair, suicidal self–destruction and cynical recklessness, he begins to do something that is alien to his nature. He begins to learn." After the discovery that Phil was reliving the same day continually, his first response was confusion, followed by recklessness. He was originally described as a 'glass half–empty' type of guy. Show video. Phil realizes that he is in love with his female producer, Rita, so he learns everything about her in order to pretend he is her ideal man. When that plan fails several times, Phil resorts to killing himself to end his repetitive misery and lack of progression. She spends the night with him again but this time he wakes up and she is still there, and it is no longer Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day shows viewers a character who displays the negative qualities that many people possess: essentially, showing the worst part of ourselves. Unlike us, the character is given the opportunity to relive the same day until he gets it right. He gets to decide how to use each day. Eventually, he undergoes a breakthrough which reveals a more authentic version of himself. This theme relates to 1 Corinthians 10:13: "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." Phil faces the temptations of being reckless, killing himself and taking advantage of the knowledge he has. However, these temptations are common to many people. The passage states that God will provide the way of escape. Phil had a breakthrough and, essentially, was given the escape of his circumstances: becoming a better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Free Will And Determinism In Groundhog Day In the award–winning movie Groundhog Day, we are presented with a peculiar situation where Phil (Bill Murray) relives the same day over and over. As the film progresses Phil is fathomed by the events occurring and lives out each day as he pleases. Correspondingly, there are zero consequences for his actions. Death, crime nor love has the ability to change the never ending DГ©jГ vu that Phil relives every day. At the same time; Phil has no free will in reliving Groundhog day, but does he have free will on his actions and how he spends his time on that day? Or is each action pre–determined? These are interesting concepts that will bring us to the issues that will be discussed throughout this paper. Do we truly have free will on our actions or are they previously determined for us? Free will and Determinism offer us different views on how we can perceive the ultimate course of our actions and life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Free will is the philosophical idea that we have the power to think, choose and act voluntary without any external factors. To believe in free will one believes that we are agents who are capable of making decisions that can alter our course of action regardless of external factors and antecedent conditions. Do not confuse free will with political freedom, which is called liberty. In 1924, two Chicago teenagers, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold kidnapped and murdered a boy named Bobby Franks. Loeb and Leopold were two bright college graduates with what looked like very promising futures. With this in mind; why would two bright young men commit such an act? When asked their response was "just to prove they could". To prove that they could ;indeed, do any action they aspired to do on their own free will. To defend the young men their parents hired Clarence Darrow; which at the time, was one of the most famous and well known lawyers. Darrow once said to a group of inmates ... • 37. Review Of The Movie ' Groundhog Day ' Director and producer Harold Ramis filmed the infamous movie, Groundhog Day, a film based on an arrogant weatherman named Phil that detests Punxsutawney where groundhogs day is held but must relive this day for what feels like an eternity. Viewing this movie from a philosophical standpoint, the viewer can relate Phil to Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism. Phil is similar to Buddha because he experiences the three marks of reality, and the four noble truths. Using a philosophical view the audience can see how in order not dwell on the past or dream of the future and individual must concentrate on the present. Phil is melancholy man, he hides behind a facade of ignorance and arrogance but deep down he hates himself and even mentions so in the film, Phil is a half–glass empty type of man. Once his reincarnation begins Phil is stuck in a phase of denial. During his eternity in Punxsutawney Phil, similar to Buddha, sees the three marks of reality. The first mark of reality Phil encounters is annica, everything is constantly changing, impermanence. Phil is stuck in a time loop but he realizes he can alter little things throughout his day which leads to different outcomes. For example, in the beginning of the movie once Phil realizes he can relive his day any way he pleases Phil performs pleasure tasks such as going on dates with different women just to have an intimate night, joy rides with drunks in a car, and doing extraordinary tasks such as devouring as many sweets as he ... Phil Connors, a self–centered narcissist, delivered this statement in the 1993 film Groundhog Day that was directed and co–written by Harold Ramis. While Ramis did practice any religion, according to a New York Times interview, he had created a film that many see as one the greatest "Buddhist" movies made. Even though the movie Groundhog Day does not claim to categorically or directly convey the dharma of Buddhism, the movie does address the ideas of rebirth, kamma, dana, and the Four Noble Truths. • 40. Research Paper On Groundhog All Eyes on the Groundhog After a long hard winter most, people are looking forward to spring. Spring brings about new life, budding trees and flowers, birds singing and butterflies flying. Predicting the end of winter and the beginning of spring has been a long time favorite ritual for many people. Groundhog Day has been around for centuries. The tradition stems from earlier traditions and crosses many different cultures. Groundhog Day remains very popular today. Initially, thousands of years ago people in Europe looked to the badger for the prediction of the arrival of spring. They watched the badger to determine when to plant their crops. However, since badgers were scarce in Pennsylvania, the groundhog took over this duty. Tradition holds that if the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd it will be scared and return to its burrow, signaling that there will be six more weeks of winter. If his shadow is not seen then spring is on its way (Groundhog). The famous Punxsutawney Phil, gets his name from the Indian name for the location "ponksad–uteney" which means "the town of sandflies" (Groundhog 1017). Prior to Groundhog Day German settlers, performed the tradition of Candlemas Day (Groundhog 2017).
