This yearbook shows that 2019/20 has been filled with a myriad of creative, sporting and cultural events. All these would have not been possible without our great facilities, wonderful teachers and support staff and most importantly our fantastic and tremendously talented students. We are trying to build the tradition of excellence and now it became our habit.

5. Mr. McGuire
Principal’s Message
This, is my 9th and final year as
Principal of the school(s). When I
arrived there was about 1100 students
at the Ain Khaled site. There are now
about 1880. In addition, we have our
relatively new school in Al Wakra that
has grown to about 450. It is fair to say
that the reputation of DBS schools is
very positive. Our examination results
have improved steadily year on year
and our facilities have improved
significantly (see, for example, the new
all-weather football pitch and
resurfaced basketball courts). The
school continues to offer a
comprehensive range of
extra-curricular activities and many
trips and visits both inside Qatar and
abroad. We are a highly successful
and commendable institution about
which our staff, parents and students
can be justifiably proud.
The success of the school is determined
by the combined efforts of many
people. I can’t speak highly enough
about our teaching staff. They have
always been professional, dedicated
and totally committed to the students.
The quality of teaching and learning
has been judged to be ‘Outstanding’
by the British Schools Overseas
inspectorate.
A judgement I completely agree with. It
is much easier to achieve outstanding
results when we have outstanding
young people to work with. Our
students are fantastic. When new
teachers arrive they marvel at the
quality of the students and often remark
about how wonderful they are and how
easy it is to teach students who are
respectful, diligent and hungry to learn.
Of course, our success would be more
difficult to achieve without the support
of our parents. You parents are a
critical component of teaching and
learning and I know that you support
the school and the children consistently.
You will see statements displayed
around the school articulating our
mission, vision and Core Purpose. The
latter is crucial. It describes how we
really feel and it encapsulates our ethos
and values. It states that ’….every
young person should gain as much as
possible from our school, based on our
belief that all learners can, need and
want to achieve’. A simple statement
that means so much.
I have loved being your Principal. I am
proud of our achievements and all I
leave with is a catalogue of wonderful
memories. I bid you farewell as Mrs
McGuire and I move to pastures new. I
will remain associated with the schools
in a consultative capacity and my
emotional attachment with the schools
will never diminish.
It is really strange writing my final contribution to the Yearbook in an eerily empty
school devoid of all pupils. The impact of the coronavirus is massive. However, as
damaging as it is, it will be short lived and we will bounce back. One significant
impact of the situation is that we are now publishing the Yearbook online. It is
impossible for us to publish, print and distribute a physical copy of the Yearbook in
the prevailing circumstances.
6. Vice Principal’s Message
The highlight of the school year for me
was the way we all celebrated
International day. If I could sum up the
uniqueness of Doha British School then
it would be the way we all came
together to demonstrate just how
multicultural and diverse this school is.
With over 100 nationalities coming
together to unite as one. Although we
all come from different backgrounds
and cultures, we all share one common
theme and that is being part of the DBS
family. These values are fundamental in
the unity we share amongst staff and
students at DBS.
I couldn’t review the year without a
mention of the Choir of the Year
competition. I was brought to tears in
the audience by the sound of our Key
Stage 2 choir. They unfortunately did
not go on to win the competition but the
way they performed was truly
amazing. Our Key Stage 1 choir, did
however go on to win the Choir of the
Year competition, which was an
outstanding achievement and testament
to the hours of hard work our staff and
students put into their extra curricular
activities.
Finally, may I wish our outgoing Year
11 cohort continued success in their
studies and will no doubt see many of
them in our 6th Form next year. I would
also like to express my thanks to all staff
and students for all their hard work and
efforts in ensuring this school continues
to be the heart of the community and
provide our students with enriching
experiences alongside a world class
education.
This could not be possible without the
strong leadership and guidance of our
Principal for the last 9 years Mr Terry
McGuire. I would personally like to
thank Mr McGuire for laying the
foundations for this outstanding school
and look forward to continuing the
great work in the forthcoming years.
Mr. Sherlock
This has been a truly memorable year for the school and for me personally. As my
first year at DBS as Vice Principal comes to an end, I can reflect on some of the
most amazing experiences I have shared. I have thoroughly enjoyed and learnt so
much about living in a new country and working at such a fantastic international
school.
7. Head of Corporate Services Message
Daniela Terzic
Every day we learn from our
experiences and look for opportunities
for improvement and innovation,
especially in the area of communication
with parents, existing, new and
prospective ones. Our goal remains to
communicate in spirit of openness,
honesty and integrity. We encourage
all our parents to contact us, ask any
question or share any concern. That
input really does matter to us.
Be assured that in the coming years we
will continue to work very hard on the
development of projects that will
improve all School provided services.
Over the summer months I will be
working with my colleagues to put into
place a smooth opening of the new
academic year and setting the priorities
to build upon the successes of the
School so that we can improve further.
To those of you who are leaving us this
year, best of luck in everything you do.
We hope that we positively impacted
your lives! To those who are returning to
us next year thank you for your loyalty
and eagerly waiting to see you in a
couple of months!
This yearbook shows that 2019/20 has been filled with a myriad of creative,

9. Head of Primary
This academic achievement would be
pointless without a strong caring school
community, and this year I have seen our
school community continue to go from
strength to strength. I am delighted to see
the continued support of our parents on a
daily basis whether this is to support
reading, the KS1 garden, trips,
swimming, Arabic or with workshops on
healthy lunches and growth mindset.
The main thing I have been astounded by
is the sense of community and comradery
amongst our pupils. Their friendships and
kindness towards each other, which
ignores the boundaries of faith or
nationality, are a pleasure to see. It is
these pillars of collaboration, kindness
and academic excellence that provide
DBS’s children with an experience that
will allow them to be global citizens, who
can make a values based contribution to
our world.
Moving forward into next year, my plan
is to continue to improve the academic
outcomes of all pupils. This will be done
through targeted intervention, and a
focus on early intervention. In all
curriculum subjects, I want to give all
our children a rich depth and breadth
of knowledge. Therefore, we will be
introducing knowledge organisers in all
foundation subjects (history,
geography, art and D&T) and then in
the core subjects. My vision is that
every child has an in-depth knowledge
of a number of subjects. Our second
academic focus will be oracy. It is
paramount for children, and adults, to
have the ability to articulate their
thinking. Oracy is a powerful tool for
learning; by teaching students to
become more effective speakers and
listeners, we empower them to better
understand themselves, each other and
the world around them.
My final focus will be making us
competitive in every sport we
participate in. I place a huge
importance on competitive sport and
believe that it is a fantastic way to build
resilience in the children. It is always
nice to win as well, and I have to thank
the PE department for their hard work
and for the rapid improvement we have
seen in our competition results.
Finally, I have to finish my contribution
to the year book by thanking Paul
Sherlock for his continued support. A
huge thank you also to Terry McGuire.
Terry has been influential in helping me
settle into school life and indeed life in
Doha. He is positive, supportive and
caring and has had a significant impact
on my career to date. I wish him all the
best for the future.
Jordan Davies
This is an excellent opportunity to thank the pupils, staff, parents and carers for making this such a wonderful first year. We
have had a very busy, successful year at Doha British School and we are incredibly proud of all our children. Firstly, I have to
acknowledge the outstanding academic achievements of our pupils. Prior to the global pandemic, we had the highest
percentage of children achieving greater depth - the highest standard awarded in primary school – since the new standard
was introduced in 2015. This is testament to the hard-work of our children and staff as we continue with a mastery curriculum.
10. I am very proud of the achievements of
all at DBS. Over the years, I have seen
the primary school go from strength to
strength and this year is no exception.
The year has seen excellent class
assemblies, inter-house competitions,
themed days and weeks (e.g. World
Book Day, International week), a
plethora of trips, visits and ECAs, and
entry of our school’s teams into a wide
variety of sporting and performing arts
competitions including the BISQ games
and the Qatar Primary Schools Choir of
the Year competition.
I have worked closely with the
Headteacher, leaders, staff and
children at the school to develop key
areas across the school. My main focus
has been building on the excellent
pedagogy, curriculum and assessment
to further enhance learning outcomes
for all children at DBS. We have
worked tirelessly to build rigour into
curriculum and assessment to ensure
children are progressing in their
learning and ensure they are achieving
and excelling beyond the expected
standards of the national curriculum. In
this endeavour, a key area has been the
development of mathematics, reading
and writing which has seen teachers
employing pedagogy to deepen our
children's understanding. This
approach has led to children having a
firmer grasp of the concepts and skills,
laying a firm foundation for the next
year's curriculum as they move through
the school.
As every year, some members of the
community will be leaving and some
staying. I am certain all of you who are
moving on will take numerous happy
memories from your time at DBS, I know
I will. This yearbook will be a reminder
of this year for those of you who are
moving on and to those of you who are
staying. All the best for 2020-21!
James Latham
Deputy Head of Primary
11. Assistant Head of Early Years
We have had another fantastic and
memorable year in the Early Years
Foundation Stage. This year we have
been focusing on improving our
children’s speaking and listening skills
through the introduction of the ‘Poetry
Basket’. Now at the end of the year the
children have learnt twelve new poems
by heart, in addition to some of their
favourite stories. The children enjoyed
performing some of these poems in our
class assemblies in April and it was clear
to see how much the children have
developed in their confidence
throughout the year. They have taken
risks in their learning and the teachers
have really tried to encourage the
children to develop persistence and a
‘can do‘ attitude. Most importantly, the
children are happy, motivated and
ready to learn.
There have been many highlights this
year ranging from International Day to
Everybody Writes Week, where the
children tracked and hatched a plan to
trap a dragon that was loose in school!
This really inspired our youngest
learners to make marks and write with a
purpose. The children particularly
enjoyed welcoming their parents for the
Winter Workshop. They loved sharing
and creating winter crafts together with
their parents and friends.
The Early Years children are now ready
to transition to the next year group and
continue their learning journey. We
would like to thank all parents for their
ongoing support and encouragement
and say a huge well done to the
children for all their hard work this
year. I wish all the children moving to
Key Stage One good luck in their new
classes and I look forward to
welcoming back all our Preschool
families in August.
Felice Kelly
12. We have also introduced ‘The Poetry
Basket’ this year to help enhance the
children’s speaking and listening
development. Each week the children
have learnt a new poem with actions. It
is inspiring to watch the children
perform the poems with such
enthusiasm and with such an appetite
for more!
At the end of year production the
children also learnt a Julia Donaldson
story through ‘Talk for Writing’. I am
sure you are as proud of the children as
we are. Their fantastic story telling skills
and singing was admirable.
All the Reception staff will greatly miss
the children but we are excited for their
new adventure in year One and we
wish them the very best. We hope you
all have a relaxing and enjoyable
Summer break.
As every year, some members of the
community will be leaving and some
staying. I am certain all of you who are
moving on will take numerous happy
memories from your time at DBS, I know
I will. This yearbook will be a reminder
What another incredible fun year we
have had in Reception. We have
watched the children grow and
develop so much independence
throughout the year. Reflecting back on
the year we have had lots of
memorable moments ranging from
Chinese New Year, International Day,
World Book Day and the Winter
Workshop. Also in the first term of
school the children visited Aspire Park
and enjoyed a lovely picnic on the
grass followed by a trip to Eataly in the
second term where the children put on
their chef hats and mad some yummy
pizzas.
Throughout the year the children also
have had many opportunities to let their
cooking skills shine. We have made our
own butter, gingerbread men, healthy
smoothies and porridge. All these
cooking opportunities inspired the
children to produce some amazing
writing. I have been a Reception
teacher for 5 years and I am still in awe
at the progress the children in
Reception make. It is simply wonderful
watching the children develop their
reading and writing skills.

Hello, all year 1, 2 and 3 children
I trust that you have enjoyed this year at
Doha British School. Let's see if we can
think of all the things we did...
The year started with a bang with a visit
from Fallah the IAAF- World Athletics
Championship mascot and we all tried
to keep up with the beat the teacher
sessions. You may have seen your mom
or dad listening to reading, having a
coffee morning, volunteering in the
pool, coming to Sports day and
watching you during the International
parade and cultural performances, or if
it was your class assembly your whole
family was welcome and maybe
granny and grandpa came. We had so
many fantastic assemblies especially
when we celebrated Qatar National
Day, Languages Day, World Book Day
and Sports Day and how amazing that
we added Purple Camels to the house
league. You collected dojo points for
excellent behaviour and learning and
house points for good effort and
attainment in specialist subjects.
At the end of the day there were some
exciting ECAs and the newly added
outside providers like mad science and

Year 1
It has been an exciting and memorable
year for the children in Year 1. They
have come into Year 1 and done
extremely well by becoming more
independent and confident leaners.
This will set them up fantastically for
Year 2. Our learning journey has
allowed us to dive back in time to look
at the history of toys, we then turned the
heat up as we looked at seasons and
the crazy climates of our planet. In the
spring term we explored the African
savannah researching safari animals
and life in Kenya. Zooming out of this
world into space and finding out about
the explorations of Neil Armstrong.
Moving into the summer term and the
children are now able to help in the
kitchen, safely preparing their own
scrumdiddlyumptious monster
sandwiches. Finally we took a trip to
Pudding Lane and found out everything
there is to know about The Great Fire of
London in 1666.
In math the children have worked hard
and challenged themselves whilst
developing their reasoning skills and
using their mathematical vocabulary to
explain their answers. In writing we
have explored some exciting texts and
the children have come up with some
exciting ideas when adapting
‘Paddington’s Trip to the Zoo’ or our
‘Alien Hunt’ stories.
The children have had some amazing
experiences this year; including
National Day, World Book day and
many others. One of the best days that
the children (and teachers) had was our
magical trip to Snow Dunes where we
all had snow ball fights, went on rides,
built snow men and made some
incredible memories.
The children have worked really hard
and made great progress with their
learning. It has been an excellent year
and all Year 1 teachers and support
staff wish every pupil the best of luck in
Year 2.
15. Estelle Dutoit
Year 2
What a wonderful year it has been in
year 2. It has been great to witness the
growth of each and every child. We
have had some unforgettable moments
which I'm sure the children will
treasure. They have matured throughout
the year and have developed their own
personalities. We have had many
unforgettable moments which I'm sure
the children will treasure.
There were many inspirational
costumes created for world book day
by the children and they were inspired
by the dragon theme. They made
excellent detective when searching for
clues to where the dragon may have
been. A great day was had by all. We
enjoyed celebrating international day
and observing the children taking great
pride in their own cultures. We had a
tantalizing afternoon tasting the foods
from the 7 different continents of the
world. One of our more enjoyable and
imaginative topics covered this year
was 'Rainforest’. The children used their
imagination to design and create their
own habitats. It was amazing to see all
their creativity. During the topic Abstract
the children used their imagination to
design their own master pieces and they
enjoyed their fieldtrip to Café Ceramic
where they designed and painted their
own tile. Talk for writing was absolutely
wonderful and the children had lots of
fun reciting the poem ‘Orangutan in my
Bedroom’. This year we had a hugely
informative morning where we focused
on computer safety.
We had a visitor who engaged the
children in stories and activities to
enhance their understanding of the
importance of being safe when using
the computer both at school and at
home. They enjoyed making posters
and signing the class charter. We hope
your child has enjoyed the year as much
as we have.
16. Year 3
It makes me proud to say that my first
time in Year 3 at Doha British School
has been with this cohort of pupils. As a
result of the effective teaching they have
received, these children will move up to
Year 4 being confident and
independent learners. As teachers, we
have strived to provide the children with
a wide range of opportunities and
challenges.
We started the year investigating
‘Vicious volcanoes’, looking at where in
the world they are located and how
they are formed. We improved our
‘Marvellous Map’ skills by creating our
own Sketch maps of Qatar and
studying how to read maps using grid
references and map symbols. Next our
‘Choccywoccydoodah’ adventure took
us into the time of the Mayans and
Aztecs to discover where those
delicious chocolate bars we eat came
from. Finally, we travelled back in time
to research how ruthless the Romans
really were!
I am very proud of the progress children
have made throughout the year. ‘Talk
for Writing' has continued to expand
their vocabulary, making them even
more fluent with their spoken English
language, and they have grasped the
importance of varied sentence
structures. In maths lessons, there has
been a greater emphasis on reasoning
and problem solving, we have also
supported them in developing their
ability to be more reflective learners.
Out of the classroom, enrichment
opportunities were created through
fun-filled trips on the Doha City Bus,
touring around our great city. We got
the chance to visit the National museum
and let’s not forget our delicious day
out at Choco de Gazelle. The children
soaked up lots of new learning and
represented the school really well. We
have thoroughly enjoyed teaching
every one of these children and wish
them the very best for Year 4.

Conor Carlin
What a fantastic year it has been at Doha
British School. The school year has gone
over and beyond all expectations and
enhanced not only the learning of the
children but the overall experience of
school. Key Stage 2 children have
enjoyed huge successes this year in
academics, sport and extra curricular
activities. We have celebrated numerous
sporting achievements, which is a credit
to the children and the PE team. Our
children have also represented the school
in the Choir festivals led by Ms
Martin.These children have done the
school proud and we look forward to
seeing them perform again next year.
These children are a credit to the school
and I want to congratulate them all for the
hard work, pride and enthusiasm they
have shown.
Key Stage 2 encourages independence,
team work, and maturity. To enhance
these skills we have continued with the
Year 4 school camp out which again was
another huge success and the children
thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Year 5 have had the opportunity to camp
overnight in the desert. They left school in
land cruisers and traveled in a convoy to
the desert. It was fantastic! The
experience the children get from each trip
has been fantastic. Highlights of the year
have also included the class assemblies.
These assemblies reflect the excellent
teaching and learning that is happening
in the classrooms. I would like to
congratulate all those children who have
received star, writers and Head Teachers
awards during the assemblies. I must also
thank the Head Boy (Abdulaziz Alokar)
and Head Girl (Zein Afani) for playing an
instrumental role in assemblies, always
being organised and confident with
announcements. They also led us in our
international day parade which was a
fantastic celebration of all the nationalities
and cultures here in DBS.
It has been really special to get into class
this year and see the excellent teaching
and learning that is happening right
across KS2. The children have shown a
real determination and they have fulfilled
our core purpose that every young person
should gain as much as possible from our
school, based on our belief that all
learners can, need and want to achieve.
This will be my final yearbook entry, as I
am off to pastures new. I have loved
working with the staff students and
parents of DBS. It has been a privilege
and an honor to work with each and
every one of you. To all DBS students
new and old may the time you spend in
this wonderful school be both enriching
and enjoyable.

Year 4
What an action packed year! The
students in Year 4 have been
enthusiastic, hardworking, creative and
brave. We have had some fantastic
trips with a trip to the IMAX cinema, the
theatre and the Camp Out. The Camp
Out was a highlight for many of us. To
see so many children being
independent, joining in games and
laughing together was wonderful.
There were even some pretty cool
dancers at the Camp Out party!
Throughout the year, we have had
topics to inspire such as Under the Sea,
Narnia, Scientific Investigation and Iron
Man. This has allowed the children the
opportunity to express their creativity
through art, drama and design. The
writing produced in English has been
wonderful and the children have
certainly been proud to show their work
off at our parental showcases.
The children have also shown how
creative they can be through making
helicopters and solving challenges in
science, being detectives in English
when Iron Man crashed into the school,
using oil pastels for artwork and using
their weaving skills when making their
Viking ship sails.
Year 4 have also celebrated curriculum
days with ‘World Book Day’ ‘Sports
Day’ and ‘National Day’. World Book
Day inspired all of the children to
explore new genres of books and read
more. The sportsmanship and
team-work was phenomenal. There
were certainly some sore throats at the
end of the day from all the cheering.
The support of the parents has been
overwhelming and it has been fantastic
to see you on trips, helping in school,
organising costumes and encouraging
your children every step of the way and
we thank you for that.
All the staff wish the children the very
best as they transition to year 5. They
have made excellent progress and we
wish them all the luck in their next
adventure.
19. Fergal Quinn
Year 5
It has been an excellent and fun year
this year in Year 5. The children focused
heavily on developing independence,
communication skills, team work and
social skills as they enter the next phase
of their childhood. These skills were
reinforced with our orienteering trip to
Aspire Park, in which the children had
to use coordinates and mapping skills
to explore the area and work as a team
to solve clues in a treasure hunt.
The children also had a residential
experience this year. They took part in
a desert safari experience before
camping overnight and taking part in a
variety of team building tasks and fun
bonding activities.
As well as our core subjects, the
children enjoyed learning through our
topic based themes of Journeys,
Ancient Civilisations, and Africa, and
they presented their learning in our
interactive museum and showcases
throughout the year. They learned about
the adventures of famous explorers like
Earnest Shackleton and mapped the
journey of climate change activist Greta
Thunberg; while debating her motivations
and purpose to develop independent
critical thinking skills.
The pupils developed an understanding
of the various civilisations from ancient
times and explored the weirdand
mysterious tombs of the pharaohs and
mummies of Ancient Egypt.
It has also been a momentous year for
sporting achievements in Year 5. The boys
winning first place at the QPPSSA football
tournament being amongst the highlights
of a very triumphant season.
The Year 5 staff have been hard working
and dedicated to ensure that they
delivered a broad and balanced
curriculum. They developed the children’s
academia as well as creating a safe and
fun environment in which every child could
find success.
The Year 5 children were excellent and a
true credit to the school and to their
families. They made it a year to
remember.
20. Year 6
We have had an adventurous final year
at Primary School. It all began as we
explored WW1 and the children were
put through their paces in our Year 6
‘Armed Forces Recruitment Day’.
Throughout our first half term, we
discovered how to perform and
celebrated our incredible writing with a
‘Poetry Slam’ for all the parents.
Our next stop in history was the Stone
Age and we met Beowulf and the evil
monster: Grendel. We made shields and
monsters; performed monologues in
character and wrote incredible
narratives. Finally, we visited Musherib
museum and discovered the history of
Qatar.
In the Spring term, we learnt about
Refugees, we explored the story of Alem
in ‘Refugee Boy’; created our own
picture books based on Khaled
Hosseini’s ‘Sea Prayer’ and discussed
and debated important topics. This topic
taught us the importance of treating
others kindly and what we mean when
we talk about ‘home’. We all had a
‘magical’ time full of rapping and
potion-making on World Book Day with
a Harry Potter twist and we got into the
spirit of dragon-hunting during
‘Everybody Writes Week’ where we
searched for evidence and interviewed
teachers to write Newspaper reports.
This year we have been on a journey;
we’ve matured, we’ve gained
independence and we’ve grown and
now we are ready for our next adventure
in Secondary School.

It has been a fantastic year for Literacy
at DBS. We’ve had World book Day
where children and teachers came into
school dressed as their favourite book
character and children from Early Years
and key Stage one were invited to a
Book Cafe, to sample new books. The
whole school participated in quizzes
and DEAR (Drop Everything and Read)
as well as entering into a 25 Day
Reading Challenge - where we saw
children engaging with a variety of
different reading materials. Children
were thrilled at the prospect of a real life
Dragon in Doha and from this came
amazing pieces of writing for Everybody
Writes week.
It has been a very busy year for our
children, who have been developing
their language and writing through
‘Talk for Writing’ consistently from EYFS
to Year 6. These texts have provided an
engaging purpose to their writing and
another opportunity for cross curricular
links. It has been fantastic to watch the
youngest members of our school
re-telling stories and poems using new
words and actions in a similar way to
our oldest pupils. The children in Early
years have also been learning new
poems through ‘Poetry Basket’.
DBS has also launched reading ‘VIPERS’
to support the children with reading
allowing the children to break down
reading comprehension further to
supporting their understanding of what
they have read. This provides a
consistent approach to reading from
Year 3 to Year 6. In KS1 there is a
similar strategy to teaching these same
comprehension skills to a younger
audience through ‘The Pawsome Gang’.
We would like to thank the parents for
your continued support in helping to
develop Literacy at DBS, whether that
was participation in Literacy workshops,
reading on World Book Day or listening
to class readers.

Maths
This year saw the children at DBS
learning Maths in many fun and
exciting ways. EYFS and KS1 have
used the White Rose Maths materials to
plan and assess the children's learning,
with an emphasis on practical and
conceptual activities. KS2 have also
been using the White Rose materials
and have used Times Tables Rockstars
to help them learn their times tables
facts.
Teaching staff have been vigorous
about the moderation of the learning
and teaching of maths. Staff have
worked as key stages and year groups
to identify and assess children working
at Greater Depth. The school took part
in an external moderation with other
British Curriculum Schools in Doha, and
it was apparent that our teaching and
learning of Maths is of an exceptional
level.
In KS2 the children have been learning
and practising their times tables. Times
Tables Rockstars has proved to be a
huge success with both teachers and
children and has helped to improve
children’s confidence, understanding
and recall of times tables facts. EYFS
have had a fantastic time using
Numberblocks to enhance their maths
learning and we are looking forward to
developing Numbbots in KS1 next
year.
The Keeping Up With The Kids
workshops were a huge success and
we would like to thank all who
attended. We are looking forward to
running more maths workshops next
year.

Primary Arabic
What a fantastic year it has been at DBS
highlighting the best teaching and
learning experiences and opportunities
for all our primary students. This year
has welcomed three new fantastic
members of staff Mrs. Ahlam, Miss.
Omnia and Mrs. Nansi - they have
contributed some outstanding ideas and
formed excellent bonds with the students
within the department.
Within the curriculum, the main focus in
writing is to use a carefully considered
choice of vocabulary, punctuation, and
grammar to communicate clearly. I am
especially pleased with children’s
progress by introducing ‘Talk 4 Writing'
in Arabic Language, children have
become more fluent with their spoken
language, they have developed a
broader, more powerful vocabulary and
they have grasped the importance of
varied sentence structures.
This year the Arabic department has
been offered many educational activities
to support the level of academic
achievement of our students in the
Arabic Language; We have had the
annual Spelling Bee Competition, which
is organized this year from Yr 1 to Yr 6;
The competition took place between our
school and many other International
schools. Also this year our students from
years 5 and 6 participated in a new
competition (Ashbaal El-Tafseer) and
they represented the school at a high
level and achieved great results. The
Holy Quran Competition this year our
students in primary achieved great
success. KS2 Arab students have had a
fantastic workshop with Dr. Jabr who
came to celebrate with us the ‘World
Book Day’.
Parents play a fundamental role in
helping our students to learn and have
been central to the success of teaching
and learning here at DBS. Thank you to
all the parents that have supported the
Arabic department in primary whether
that was coming in to read on World
Book Day, listening to class readers or
attending Parents evenings and
information evenings throughout the year.
We thank all of you for your involvement
in promoting a positive attitude towards
school and indeed towards learning.
24. Spanish
This year has been the best year yet for
our Spanish department! Mr Guerola,
Miss Nira and I are very proud of all
the children’s achievements in Spanish,
this comes from their love of the
language and culture, and fun and
games of course! Our vision is to focus
on speaking, to improve
communication and give the children
the confidence to go out and use the
language that they learn in school. This
remains our goal as we think it is the
most important element when learning
a language. With this in mind we feel
confident that our Spanish students are
equipped with the language skills to be
successful in any language that they
may wish to take up in the future.
Throughout the year, we have created
events for the children to take full
advantage of their speaking skills.
Some of our students had the
opportunity to visit Mathaf museum to
look at the artist El Anatsui, as he works
with colours and shapes, his work it lent
itself perfectly to one of our topics. With
the help of Spanish speaking mums and
CAS students, the children spent the
whole day speaking Spanish, doing a
treasure hunt and describing the art in
Spanish.
Our best day so far has to be
Languages Day. The Spanish children
in Year 6 hosted a Languages Fair for
the rest of the school, teaching them
everything they have learnt so far about
verbs, adjectives, sounds… the list goes
on. We had a guest DJ, Manuel,
playing the music for our disco and ‘La
Carrera de Toros’ was our most
competitive yet! We also had some
great Flamenco dancers from Key
Stage 2, a play by year 5 and lovely
singing by the whole school in both
Spanish and Arabic. Not to forget
International Day where we all wore
our best Flamenco dresses and gave
the school the chance to taste some
typical Spanish tapas; Salmorejo and
tortilla de patata. The Sangria went
down a treat too!

This has been another very busy year for
the Music Department and the sound
tech crew. We’ve kept the traditional
open mic lunchtime sessions going.
These are always very popular with the
performers and with the audience. It
gives a chance to students not involved
in the music department to showcase
their talent.
The Primary school choirs have had a
busy year as well with the yearly choir
competition. The Music Department was
heavily involved with the Winter Bazaar
providing high quality performances for
an afternoon of entertainment that was
very well received. Another important
day for us during the year is
International Day where students
performed songs and dances from their
home country. We coordinated with the
different communities of DBS and put
together a good show with a good
balance between dancing and singing.
The big event this year though, was
DBS’s comeback on the musical theatre
stage with the production of Return To
The Forbidden Planet. The show is a
parody of Shakespear’s Tempest set in a
spoof 1950’s sci-fi universe.
For the 1st time at DBS every aspect of
the show was student-led. Nothing was
outsourced. The troupe on stage of
course, but also the band, the set design
and building, the costumes, the
advertisement, the sound and the light,
the front of house, the ticket sales…
Everyone involved took responsibility for
their part. Show week was the
penultimate week of the Autumn Term.
During the whole 1st term, we dedicated
a lot of time and effort to ensure we’d
have a very good show. We had to have
a day’s rehearsal during October half
term and after half term we rehearsed
everyday of the week until 4 o’clock.
We also came in on 2 different Fridays.
It was a big undertaking but the students
did themselves proud and we produced
an excellent show. Every student came
through, making the entire crew proud.
The show was a massive success. We
did 4 shows altogether including one
exclusively for primary students. The
feedback was very positive.
Next year’s show is High School
Musical, and I am sure it is going to be
amazing as well. Watch this space.

Physical Education
In 2019-2020, the newly formed PE
department has developed the already
enriching curriculum to students at
Doha British School. A variety of
different sports throughout the year
have being taught from traditional
British Sports such as Football and
Netball to wider sports such as Softball
and Kabaddi!
Participation in such diverse sports has
seen our students become strong,
resilient and innovative learners that
can take their new skills to the wide
world.
An approach of “Humble in Victory,
Gracious in Defeat” attitude to sport
has supported students in participating
in healthy competitions within lessons
and for those chosen to represent the
school in fixtures such as QUESS
league, QPPSSA tournaments and
BISQ games. This has set the platform
for the House Competitions that has
provided many opportunities for
students to compete against one
another whilst always maintaining fair
play whilst having fun.
Sports week was a huge success this
year with the entire PE department
leading a variety of sports as part of the
students’ house competitions. Football,
Basketball, Dodgeball, Athletics Relay,
“Tug of war” and many, many more.
1000 days mark has past until the FIFA
World Cup. With such an event on the
horizon, opportunities will continue to
present themselves for our students.
Continuing our partnership with the
Qatar Football Association, our
students and families of DBS have
enjoyed tickets to watch the Qatar
national team in action.
It has been a fantastic sporting year
and with the newly formed PE
department and the eagerness to learn
from our students, the future is looking
very bright!

30. study of these academic subjects are no
use when studied on their own. We
have to teach children how to use their
knowledge effectively and how to build
their own understanding, taking their
learning to new heights in education.
Students in school learn the so-called
‘soft’ skills of teamwork, leadership,
communication, problem solving,
flexibility and the traits that make for
effective human interaction and
support. The willingness of our students
to engage in these activities is inspiring
and I have been immensely proud to
see so many students participate in a
broad and rich range of activities.
Some of my highlights this year have
been the weekly house competitions,
the Ghadeer Business and Enterprise
initiative, Model United Nations,
Charitable work for Downtown Doha
and PAWS to name but a few.
I would like to thank all members of the
school community in contributing to
making the academic year 2019/20
so successful.
Since arriving at Doha British School, I
have been privileged to work with an
array of talented professionals,
fantastic set of students and supportive
wider school community. Throughout
the academic year I have never ceased
to be amazed by the positive climate
that exists within all parts of our school
community.
My highest priority has been to build
upon the outstanding standards set
through the inspirational leadership of
Mr. Mcguire and we have worked
diligently to continue to bring about
successful outcomes for all students.
Doha British School is more than just a
school, it is a learning community in
which students experience positive
education, learning how to work
together towards a common aim
alongside learning the knowledge
required to be effective drivers of
change for the future.

31. getting the most innovative, exciting and
efficient teaching there is.
This year, we have seen a significant
increase in teachers taking part in the
CAMSTAR project (in partnership with the
University of Cambridge). All those
research projects are classroom centered
and are to enrich the teaching and
learning experience in the classroom with
different ideas focusing on topics such as
Flip Learning, creative writing, Learning
Walls and so forth. What an inspiring
way to keep learning as a professional!
Finally, it has been an immense honour to
see the outstanding work of my
colleagues and how they can bring
learning to life through passion, positive
relationships with students and innovative
teaching strategies! Being invited in their
classrooms is always a true privilege and
I feel undoubtedly lucky to be surrounded
by such talent! I know the students of DBS
are appreciative of their teachers, and so
am I!
Thank you to all the wonderful professionals
who have contributed to raising the
standards of T&L this year. May the hard
but rewarding work continue next year!
What a fantastic year it has been at
Doha British School, highlighting the very
best Teaching & Learning experiences
and opportunities for all of our teachers
and students.
Part of my job as Deputy Head teacher
for T&L is to coordinate a programme of
induction for our Newly Qualified
Teachers. We, myself and a team of 9
excellent mentors, can honestly say how
humbling, enriching and exciting it is to
see colleagues blossom and become so
confident and assertive in their practice!
They are all doing brilliantly and are all
en route to a very successful NQT year
and a brilliant teaching career! Thank
you to everyone for sharing your
professionalism, support and expertise
with our new colleagues.
Another wonderful and rewarding part of
T&L is to constantly be working with the
excellent staff we have here in the
Secondary school. We have had many
Continued Professional Development
sessions this year where fantastic and
constructive conversations have taken
place in order to improve, question and
reassert our practices as classroom
teachers so our students are always

Year 7
It has certainly been an exciting start to
secondary school for Year 7. We have
gotten used to new timetables, new forms
and new lessons and Year 7 have taken it
all in their stride and have really taken to
the challenge. There have been some
exciting house point competitions
including, spelling bee’s, catapult making,
business quizzes and many more.
There was phenomenal involvement in
both National Day and International
Day where we have seen the wonderful
national dress for Qatar and then again
from across the world which culminated
in the International Day Parade with the
Primary students. Year 7 have taken on
the almighty competition of the Star
Reading quizzes and gained hundreds
of house points whilst reading their
favourite books. Dream Team has
become even more competitive as we
continue through the year with 7S and
7D enjoying being able to wear their
own clothes on the last day of term.
Many students have also been
awarded the prestigious prize of Star of
the Week which has been wonderful to
see.
Year 7 have been able to get to know
their tutors really well, including Mrs
Greggery, Miss Johnson, Miss Ali, Mr
Walles and Miss Butler and new
friendships have been established in
their forms because of them.
Year 7 were excellent sportsmen and
women during the sports day
celebrations, getting involved in
Football, Basketball and Benchball as
teams, embracing the competition and
enjoying a day off timetable to do their
favourite sports. 7B even had blue pom
poms to support their house with some
imaginative cheerleading!
So much new learning has taken place
and it has been a pleasure to watch
and enjoy all that has happened
alongside Year 7. I am excited to see
what lies ahead into the next academic
year and I am looking forward to
welcoming many of you back in
August!
33. Year 8
This year has also seen a large
proportion of students taking part in
extracurricular activities as well as
house and external competitions put on
by the school. Some particular
highlights for me include the students
who took part in the dance aspect of
the school musical, the performances of
some of our students during open mic
and watching the most intense spelling
bee I have ever seen! I also need to
acknowledge all the students who
represented the school in the BISQ
games in a variety of different sports.
All students who competed conducted
themselves professionally and sensibly
and together managed to perform well
overall as a school.
I am excited to see what the students
will go on to achieve in the future. Keep
up the hard work!
Marcus Thomas
It has been an excellent year for our
students in Year 8! In contrast to the
previous year where students were just
getting used to their surroundings and
the expectations in secondary school
they certainly hit the ground running.
There have been so many house points
and star of the week nominations which
has been brilliant to see. Reading
through the vast variety of different
reasons that students have been
nominated shows the exceptional
contribution that our students are
making to the school.
The dream team competition during
form time has had many different
winners this year which shows how
consistently well the students in Year 8
have managed to maintain their
attendance and punctuality as well as
achieve house points and reduce the
number of learning reminders. I cannot
give full credit to the students without
mentioning their tutors for this
achievement. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of the year 8
tutors for their passion, support and
patience that they have shown to their
forms.
34. Justine Kings
Unbelievably just like that another year
has absolutely sped by! Without even
realising it my little year 7’s who I began
this incredible journey with, have
suddenly come to the end of this first key
stage of secondary school!
Throughout this year we have welcomed
several new pupils to our year group
who have really become part of our
school community. It has also been a
real pleasure welcoming a new team of
tutors. Along with my faithful comrade
Saood Jamader who was my last tutor
standing - I have loved working with
Lubna Shahid, Aurora Ricotti, Anjali
Mahto and Warren Green. Thank you
for your tireless support and commitment
to year 9. It has been fantastic working
with you all.
So what has stood out to you this year?
For me, this busy year has seen
memorable days like National Day, the
International Parade, Sports Day, World
Book Day (always my favourite!) Not to
mention the school production RTTFP that
several of you got involved in. Fantastic
opportunities for you, Year 9.
But on a more serious note as you have
grown in maturity and stature (for the
first time I have seriously considered
wearing heels!) this year has bought
important decision-making as you have
deliberated and chosen your options in
preparation for the next key stage of
your school life - your IGCSEs. This is
such an important step for you and I
believe you will all excel in the subjects
that you love and motivate you.
It is at this point that I must bid you all
farewell. Year 9 - I am so proud of each
and every one of you! I simply could
not be prouder. But for now it is time for
me to stand back and watch with
admiration from the wings as you
embark on this next stage on your
journey…Good luck!
Year 9
35. Laura Usher
What a fantastic year it has been for
our students in Year 10! August 2019
saw them begin their journey towards
achieving their IGCSEs and they have
worked incredibly hard since.
We have seen outstanding levels of
commitment from all students, with
achievements ranging from impressive
Science projects to innovative, creative
Art and Textiles work being produced.
In February, a number of Geography
students embarked on a trip to Iceland,
some of them experiencing snow for the
first time! We have also witnessed some
students visit Nepal to participate in
important charitable work. Aside from
these wonderful overseas trips, students
have also been able to show off their
commitment to the wider school
community on home soil by
participating in the school production
of Return to the Forbidden Planet, a
thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining
show! On the sports field, we have
achieved great success in both male
and female competitions. The Reading
Buddies scheme has allowed a number
of Year 10 students to develop their
love for teaching and helping others as
they have spent their mornings helping
primary school students improve their
own reading skills. All of these things
demonstrate just how dedicated our
Year 10 students are to taking risks and
consistently showing their caring
nature.
As we continue to progress down the
path towards IGCSE, I would like to
take this opportunity to wish all of our
students the best of luck in Year 11. To
those students leaving us at the end of
the year, I hope they continue to
succeed in their new schools, and to
those students staying at DBS, I look
forward to seeing the same high levels
of focus and determination in the
upcoming year. Thank you to all who
have supported us on our journey,
especially our wonderful Year 10
tutors!
Year 10
36. Katy Leighton
Year 11 students have risen to the
challenge of their IGCSE year with
maturity and determination. I am very
proud of the attitude and commitment
that they have shown to their studies and
wish them all the best for their results.
Alongside completing their IGCSE
courses, participating in additional
intervention classes and revising hard at
home, students have also continued to
be heavily involved in wider school
activities, helping them to continue to
develop as well rounded individuals.
Year 11 students have participated in
the school council, MUN and the Duke
of Edinburgh Award. They have also
been on trips to new countries including
Nepal where students took part in
charitable work and Iceland for
Geography students. Year 11’s have
continued to represent DBS lions in
sporting fixtures in Netball, Basketball
and Football. The biggest sporting
achievement was by the U16 Netball
team, who have shown continued
progress throughout their years, coming
runners up in the league. This year also
saw our Business Studies students taking
on a new challenge with the Ghadeer
competition and I was blown away with
their innovation and the confidence in
which the finalists presented.
It has been an absolute pleasure to be
the Progress Leader for this year group.
The year 11’s have character and
individuality but are respectful and
supportive of each other. I wish each
and every one of them success with their
next chapter and hope to see many of
them back at DBS next year.
Year 11
37. We have also had many trips taking
place for our sixth form students, year
12 Business students visited the stock
exchange; another group of students
visited the “Made in Bangladesh”
exhibition, and many students from
sixth form have participated in MUN,
WISE and QNL trips.
Next year our sixth form will continue to
grow, with the introduction of more
A-levels and BTEC qualifications. As a
result the common room will receive a
makeover to meet the growing needs of
our students. I’m excited to be able to
offer students another study space, as
well as a relaxing environment for them
to eat and meet with friends.
It's been an exciting time in sixth form
this year, with the introduction of a
range of A-Level subjects, alongside our
long standing International
Baccalaureate qualification and AS
Levels. With over 150 students in sixth
form, it's fair to say that we are
growing as a year group. What a great
feeling it is, to be able to offer so many
of our year 11 students places in year
12.
With the introduction of the house
system this year, sports week was a
roaring success, all students
participated in football, basketball,
volleyball and dodgeball. The houses
competed against each other for the
week with students wearing their house
colours, and the level of sportsmanship
was outstanding. Thank you to the PE
department for planning such a great
event!

38. Our class of 2020 has enjoyed a variety
of activities this year of the IB Diploma
programme. The trip to the Qatar

Now in it’s 9th year at DBS, students on
the IB Diploma programme continue to
benefit from a wide range of subjects and
activities that improve their interpersonal
skills. The class of 2020 are busy
preparing for the final exams and are on
track to exceed global benchmarks. Their
Extended Essays have produced a wide
range of interesting topics which are
critically analysed. Some of our highlights
include how screen exposure impacting
on infants development, the use of
micro-surgical robots and many students
have anaylsed a variety of literary texts.
The students also benefited from an
external speaker from Studynova. Mitch

areas of Maths, Physics and TOK which
engaged students and supported them
with exam study skills.

39. English
The 2019-2020 academic year has been
another excellent year for the English
department. Building on our fantastic
results for IGCSE and IB in the summer,
we have introduced updated
specifications for IB English Literature and
English Language and Literature, and a
new A Level course: International
Advanced Level English Literature. Our
KS5 students now have an even wider
variety of pathways to take in preparation
for higher education and both the new AL
and updated IB courses have been very
well received. We are sure this will
continue and the success achieved by our
KS5 cohorts will continue.
Our KS4 students have been working
tremendously hard on their IGCSE
preparations. In Year 10, the students
have already completed two of the four
pieces of coursework for their English
Language and English Literature
qualifications: one on ‘An Inspector Calls’
- the thought-provoking and extremely
relevant drama text; the second a creative
writing piece where the students were
able to design a story of their own
choosing and use their imagination to
create an engaging and interesting text!
For our Year 11 students, the final
preparations are taking place for their
examinations in the summer term; they
have been working hard on their
analytical exploratory skills, as well as
developing and honing their creative
writing. Based on the hard work and
dedication we’ve seen from them, we’re
sure it’ll be another successful year for our
IGCSE students in 2020!
In KS3 this year, we were lucky enough to
receive an author visit from the writer, Julie
Lamin, who’s most recent publication,
‘Beyond the Volcano’ was the focus for
creative writing workshops that she
delivered to our Year 8 students. The
students had a great time and picked up
some fantastic tips from Julie about how to
create their own stories. These skills will
stand the students in really good stead for
their writing assessments this academic
year, and IGCSE studies at KS4.
Recently, we celebrated World Book Day
as a school community. All key stages
took part, with a huge number of our
students (and staff!) dressing up as a
character from one of their favourite
stories. There was a wonderful array of
costumes and colours; the students all
really got into the spirit of the day and it
was wonderful to see. There were a
selection of activities for students to
complete during the day: from writing a
story in a tweet, to creating a book cover
for one of their lessons that day, the
students were able to showcase their love
of learning and, most importantly,
reading and story-telling. The day
culminated in the now famous ‘World
Book Day Bake Off’, where over 15
groups participated in baking cakes
whose designs were inspired by their
favourite books. The entries’ cakes were
all amazing; they looked great and they
tasted delicious! The day itself showcased
what a fantastic school community we
have and how important reading is
valued by both students and staff.
We welcomed two new teachers to our
department this year: Anna Johnson and
Ruckia Begum. They’ve both been
fantastic and become integral members of
our department. We’re sure they will
continue to contribute to the department’s
success.
On a sad note, we say goodbye to four
members of the department this year: after
six years at DBS, both Miss Usher and
Mrs Murphy will be leaving, in addition to
myself after five years, and Mr. Temple
after two. Our department has been very
strong and that is down to the hard work
and dedication of all our staff; these
teachers have been a huge part of our
achievements. We are sorry to see them
go but we wish them all the best in their
future endeavours.

This year saw the children at DBS
learning Maths in many fun and
exciting ways. EYFS and KS1 have
used the White Rose Maths materials to
plan and assess the children's learning,
with an emphasis on practical and
conceptual activities. KS2 have also
been using the White Rose materials
and have used Times Tables Rockstars
to help them learn their times tables
facts.
Teaching staff have been vigorous
about the moderation of the learning
and teaching of maths. Staff have
worked as key stages and year groups
to identify and assess children working
at Greater Depth. The school took part
in an external moderation with other
British Curriculum Schools in Doha, and
it was apparent that our teaching and
learning of Maths is of an exceptional
level.
During Term 3, the Reception and KS1
children enjoyed a challenging and
exciting Maths workshop from a British
company called As Creatives. The
children in Reception took part in a
Pirates Challenge where Captain
Morgan visited the school and needed
the pupils’ help to get back to his
correct time and place. Year 1 and 2
took part in a “Race into Space”
challenge where “Major Tom” visited
the school, in search for Britain’s next
astronaut. Lots of fun was had by
everyone!
In KS2 the children have been learning
and practising their times tables. Times
Tables Rockstars has proved to be a
huge success with both teachers and
children and has helped to improve
children’s confidence, understanding
and recall of times tables facts.
Our Maths day was a huge success
and saw KS2 celebrating their learning
of Times Tables whilst rocking away to
Times Tables Rockstars. KS1 enjoyed
the different Numbots challenges and
activities that were organised for them.
Whilst EYFS had a fantastic time using
Number Blocks to demonstrate their
learning.

This has been the best year for Science at
DBS since I have been here. The students in
KS3, KS4 and KS5 have all performed
exceptionally well in classwork, homework,
ECAs and school science activities. The
teachers have been fantastic and
encouraging to all students, supporting them
to display their cross-curricular knowledge in
all areas of science education. There have
been fantastic projects and trips which have
taken place to encourage the students to
become global citizens and be aware of the
effects we are having on the plant.
Key stage 4 students are progressing
very well towards their IGCSEs, and we
are looking at achieving an excellent
set of double and triple science results
this year, with many students expecting
to do well enough to use science in their
future career paths.
Key Stage 5 students across both AS
Levels and IB have been competing
multiple tasks for their courses. Students
approaching examinations have shown
extreme dedication and resilience in
preparation for their final examinations.
Year 12 IB students have been exploring
scientific and technological developments
into how to limit the effects of global
warming and climate change for future
generations in their group 4 projects;
with some students exploring using gases
from waste sites, artificial trees and ways
of limiting deforestation.
Key stage 3 have taken part in British
Science Week and have competed in a
number of activities around the school,
including quizzes, science treasure
hunts and a science fair. The passion
and enthusiasm that the students have
displayed is extraordinary and it has
been a pleasure to watch the students
engage with and succeed in science.
A number of aspiring doctors took part in
the Doha College medical conference in
March, and we are extremely proud of
the dedication, passion and
professionalism of these students. How
not only researched and area of medicine
and the developments in that field, they
then presented this to peers, teachers and
doctors from other countries in the GCC.
We have welcomed some fantastic
science teachers this year who have, and
are going to go on to continue the
fantastic work in the Science department
for the students. It is with great sadness
though that we have to say goodbye to
Mr Visaggio, Mr Mangera, Mrs Kerridge
and myself; who are all off to other
schools in Doha and around the world.

42. Another year to be proud of for the MFL
department! We have had the exceptional
pleasure of seeing our students blossom
and we are very proud of the current
cohort of year 13 and year 11 and wish
them all the best for their results in their
examinations. We have all been working
hard to maintain the incredibly high
standards we have set for ourselves with
last year's outstanding results. We
welcomed Ms Ricotti to the MFL team this
year and she is a great addition to the
department. As an MFL team, we are
excited to carry forward our shared
dedication, experience and commitment
into next year.
Where to start with what we have
achieved this year! The 26th September
was European Languages day, and we
ran numerous activities across the
course of the week with secondary
students eagerly competing for house
points, including a Flag Treasure Hunt,
Tutor time quizzes, a quizlet tournament
and students using their understanding
of Spanish and French grammar to
create their own language. All the
entries were incredible and evidence of
some of the fantastic linguists we have
at DBS.
This excitement continued when the
Primary Spanish teachers ran a range
of activities in the build up to
international day, including Secondary
students teaching lessons for Primary,
activity stalls set up by students, a
Spanish tortilla making competition and
a Spanish DJ!
It has been an absolute joy to see so
many budding linguists, not only in the
classroom but outside of it as well. We
have grown our opportunities for
students to work on their languages
outside of lesson time, through extra
intervention sessions to support our
Year 11 and Year 13 students, as well
as a range of language based ECAs
including a Spanish club and
introducing French to primary students.

The 2019 - 2020 academic year has
seen a myriad of enrichment activities
happening within the Arabic department.
Arabic at DBS has continued to go from
strength to strength, the Arabic results this
academic year were amazing with
100% passing rate in IGCSE Arabic 1st
language, 81%passing rate in GCSE
Arabic 2nd language, 100% passing
rate in AS and 100% passing rate in IB.
Our school held a networking event for
IGCSE Arabic as a first language for
British schools.
In KS3 we are trying to create a spirit of
challenge among students, taking into
account the individual differences
between students. We have a free
reading lesson every two weeks in KS3
that the students can select the title they
would like to read. A key goal for the
department is linking our student’s
education of Arabic language beyond
the classroom to real-world contexts.
This year we have participated in and
organized a variety of different
activities throughout the Academic
year; including:
• Qatar National Day, the students
showcased an assembly about Qatar
and traditional dances. The teachers
and students wore traditional clothes to
show their enthusiasm.
• DBS students from all the different
stages took part in the annual Quran
competition, the results were amazing
37 students out of our 45 students won.
• MUN in Arabic, Mr. Mohamed
Abdelatif who lead this program for
students, this is the first time to have
MUN in Arabic. It’s a big challenge for
students especially they are learning
everything in English.
• Qatar debate: Mrs. Seham and Mr.
Mohamed El Sawy who lead this
program for students interested in
debating.
I am already looking forward and
planning next year to make sure we
continue to sustain and improve the
Arabic language in our school.

2019-2020 has been an exciting and
successful year for the Humanities
department, following on from the
amazing IGCSE and IB results achieved
last summer. This year has welcomed two
new fantastic members of staff, Emily
Butler and Andy Walles - both have
contributed some outstanding ideas and
formed excellent bonds with the students.
We gained our largest cohort of students
picking both subjects at IGCSE this year!
This year has been an exciting year in terms
of trips for the department; we saw 32
students embark on a geography field-trip to
Iceland, where students enjoyed spending
an afternoon at the Blue Lagoon, completed
a glacier walk and some many volcanic
features. The students had a fantastic time
and were proud ambassadors for the
department outside of school.
There has been some brilliant and
thought-provoking learning this year;
global goals were regularly discussed
and linked to the syllabus. Some of my
lesson highlights in history include: Y9
students constructing trench boxes with
soldier’s possessions, Y7 building
medieval castles and Y13 students using
IB learner profile by linking it to
authoritarian figures in IB history. In
geography, Y8 students turning into
detectives to figure out what happened
at Holbeck Hall and Y9 students
improved their skills in debating and
presenting ideas about the impacts of
globalisation and completed a decision
making activity to save the population of
Montserrat.
It is with sadness that I have to say
goodbye to the department after taking
on the role two years ago - I have
thoroughly enjoyed my time at the
school and hope I made a long lasting
impact on encouraging a love of
geography! We are also losing Shirley
English and Warren Green who are
moving on to other international posts
outside of Qatar, they have both been a
credit to the department bringing some
brilliant ideas and I know the students
will miss them very much.
Humanities
45. Niall Quinn
It was another big year for outstanding
ideas, flamboyant thinking and inspired
making.
Design and Technology was a hive of
busy minds, creating and solving some
tough design situations. The subject has
gone from strength to strength with it
now being the most oversubscribed
option subject at GCSE. Students just
can't wait to get through the door into
lessons!
This year our GCSE cohort had the task
of creating unique designs to meet the
GCSE requirements. In our time
teaching this has, without doubt, been
some of the best design work we have
seen. Students have excelled in meeting
the needs of the exam and this will set
strong foundations for their future
careers.
In DT we like to keep up with the latest
cutting edge technology. We welcomed
some state of the art technology into the
department this year in the form of a
NEW 3D PRINTER!
Our current IB students made great use
of the printer designing and
prototyping some new inspired ideas.
The level of CAD (computer aided
design) and prototyping techniques in
DBS is now at an industry standard.
Students are developing the higher
skills needed to become robust
designers that will easily move into any
career linked to design and creation.
Here is to another outstanding year of
progress, development, creation and
critical thinking!

Our primary library encourages curiosity
and innovation, it is the central point for all
kinds of activities in addition to reading,
such as access to information, knowledge
building and lively discussions. The library
was brightly decorated to be a welcoming
place where children and teachers enjoy
reading and discussing fiction and
non-fiction books. Our library was
continuously updated with the latest book
titles and the décor/displays are themed
seasonally to create a different, exciting
and welcoming atmosphere for our
students.
This year for the first time in the school’s
history, we introduced pre-school to the
library by creating an area specifically
for EYFS and KS1 to give them more
freedom to roam around and choose
whatever books that reflect their
imagination. They were taught basic
library skills, enjoyed listening to different
stories and participated in activities
related to stories presented each week.
Additionally, the library opened its
doors to parents in the afternoon
allowing them to enjoy reading with
their young ones, as we believe parents
play an important role in their reading
development.
KS2 students learnt how books are
displayed and catalogued which
resulted them to confidently locate their
desired books independently. They
learnt about different authors every
month and were encouraged to read
the author’s books. They enjoyed
participating in quizzes which were
held at the end of every term to help
build up on their general knowledge, in
addition to receiving half an hour of
quite time for reading.
We had a fantastic and fun filled year,
introducing innovative ways to further
help the students’ progress in their
development in reading and at the
same time having fun. This was proven
to be a positive outcome for the students
which was shown from the results of a
school survey where the students voted
the primary library number 1 “best
place to be” in the school!

47. We would like to congratulate Archita
Mehta who received an offer for a
scholarship at the ‘University for the
Creative Arts’, UK. This is fantastic
representation of the high quality of work
being produced by our students in the Art
department. Archita has worked
extremely hard throughout the IB Visual
Arts course and has continuously
demonstrated high levels of enthusiasm
and a great artistic ability. Well done
Archita!
The department is going from strength to
strength and we are very excited about
what our next academic year has in
store!
What a successful year we have enjoyed so far! We have had more students than
ever before achieving level 9-5 at GCSE! We would like to congratulate our Textile
Design class of 2019 as 100% of students achieved levels 9 –7! This is a fantastic
achievement and is an example of the all the hard work and dedication from
members of the department and of course the students!
On the 17th of February the Art
department were proud to host the
Annual Art Exhibition. Which showcased
some of the outstanding work from our
students in Key Stage 4 and 5, it looked
amazing! A lot of hard work and effort
went into making this event possible. We
would like to thank Mr. Murphy for all of
his help putting up the exhibition, also Mr
Jugue and Natalie Magness who
performed classical pieces at the event,
creating an elegant atmosphere. The
evening was a huge success and the
students received lots of positive
feedback from all who attended. We
were very proud of our Year 13 students
who have worked innovatively and
passionately, over their 2 Year course, to
produce a collection of contemporary art,
for their final assessment. They have all
applied to Art universities and hope
pursue a career in the creative arts field.
We wish them all the best with their future
endeavors.

49. The 2019-20 academic year has seen a myriad of enrichment activities happening
within the Business Studies department. A key goal for the department was to extend
our students education of business beyond the classroom to real world contexts to
engage our students with the application of the subject and its topical nature. Below is
a brief snapshot of the enrichment initiatives our students have experienced this year.
Ghadeer Impact Academy
Enterprise competition organised in conjunction with Ghadeer Dairy. A cohort of Year
11 Business Studies students had to formulate and pitch a new product idea to
Ghadeer to launch on the market. Throughout the competition students had the
opportunity to work with, and be mentored by, senior personnel within Ghadeer to
develop their ideas. Those that made the final round had the opportunity to tour the
Ghadeer factory and learn more about its operations. The winning product was
Almond Milk and this is due to be launched on the market shortly – from a small
classroom idea to a real business investment and a new product on the market!
Business
Guest Speakers
Alan Marshall shared his expertise and
experience working as a senior HR
executive. Students learned about
different aspects of recruitment and
selection and the importance of
organisational culture.
International businessman, Xavier
Chang, delivered a talk about his
extensive career and tips for success in
today's dynamic world. Mr Chang
brought business theory to life with his
fascinating stories and anecdotes.

50. Qatar Stock Exchange
Engaging trip where students learned about saving and investing and had an
opportunity to take part in a very competitive stock trading simulation!
Made in Bangladesh
trade exhibition
Students met with Bangladeshi exporters
showcasing their range of goods and
services and learned about investment
opportunities in Bangladesh, where
classroom concepts were brought to life.
51. 2019 - 2020 has been an incredible academic year for Computer Science with many
innovative activities happening within the subject. This year has provided students with
a hands on application of Computer Science where students got creative and
connected with real life computing.
QITCOM 2019
QITCOM was Qatar’s very first Information Technology conference, where students
were invited to experience the latest technology and innovation from all over the
world, here in Doha. The focus of the exhibition was for safer, smart cities, where
students learned about how Doha is implementing this technology through transport
and public services. Students had the opportunity to experience and try out
technology from the biggest tech firms such Microsoft, Dell and Google.

52. Botball 2020
A team of year 12 IB students took part in a regional robotics competition
alongside other schools in Doha. The competition was run by the
prestigious technology university Carnegie Mellon University, Qatar. The
team went through rigorous training provided by the Kiss Institute of
Practical Robotics and were supported by the executive director of KIPR,
Steve Goodgame. The team worked exceptionally hard for 6 weeks to
plan, build and test their robotics before the big competition in February.
Alice Programming Competition 2020
Students from KS3 took part in Carnegie Mellon
University’s annual Alice Programming Competition to
program an animation using Alice Programming. The
animations were in the following themes: climate
change, health, cyber security, traffic safety, culture and
globalisation.
53. 2019 - 2020 has been a wonderful year
for the career guidance section. Students
have had many opportunities to meet
university representatives and immerse
themselves into the world of further
education. I have hosted a number of
university visits and fairs. We had the
opportunity to be visited by university
representatives from around the world and
students and parents, got the opportunity
to learn more about admissions,
scholarships and courses available to
them.
In addition to this, our students had the
opportunity to attend the prestigious WISE
conference at QNCC which this year
focused on education vs. technology.
Students were able to gain an insight into
the technological developments in the
education sector and hear success stories
from around the globe, but mostly in
Qatar.
This year has also been busy with
university applications. I am happy to say
that most of our Year 13 and Year 12 AS
students have offers and will be attending
institutions around the world. University
applications range from Education City in
Qatar to University of Toronto in Canada.
We have offers from universities in the
UK, Canada, USA, Netherlands, Qatar
and many more. Some of our students
have 5 or more offers in hand, which is
an amazing achievement.
The continued success of our career
guidance and university monthly
newsletter has made be quite proud.
Working along a group of wonderful
Year 12 students who made it all happen.
I have spent a lot of time with students from
year 9 – 11 training them on our career
guidance platform called Unifrog. Students
have the opportunity to explore careers
and university requirements. Career day for
Year 10 has also been a great success as
well as our annual summer internships and
various educational and career programs
that students have attended outside of
school.
Overall, this year has been a great success
and I look forward to working with the next
year’s groups in the new school year.

54. Creativity, Activity and Service
This year has seen many Year 12 and
Year 13 students really engage with the
ethos of the Creativity, Activity and
Service (CAS) programme which is an
element of the IB Diploma 'core'
alongside Theory of Knowledge and the
Extended Essay.
Our sixth form students continued to
contribute to school events by
volunteering their time at the Winter
Bazaar, International Day, Qatar
National Day and at the many Parents'
Evenings throughout the year.
Lots of pupils also supported the 'Reading
Buddies' and 'Maths Buddies' schemes
organised by Mrs. McGuire and Ms.
Winstanley which really benefit our
younger students.
Groups of particularly committed students
were involved in the Recycling Project,
under the guidance of Ms. Salonga, and
Downtown Doha, under the supervision
of Mr. Mangera. This year, Downtown
Doha students collected large quantities
of clothing, food and toiletries which
were delivered to a labour camp in
Qatar. The team also collaborated with
Mrs. Jugue's Model United Nations ECA
so that they could enter the Global Act
Mrs. Jugue's Model United Nations ECA
so that they could enter the Global Act
With Impact (GAIA) Awards at this year's
THIMUN conference. This resulted in the
team's video entry coming second and
the reward of a cash prize which will be
used to help those most in need.
Around fifty students enjoyed a trip
organised by Ms. Salonga to the
mangroves in Term 1 where they learnt
about mangrove conservation, acquired
some African drumming skills and went
kayaking - with mixed results!
The CAS trip to Nepal in December
involved a cultural exploration of
Kathmandu, a three day trek and three
days working at various projects - a
school for deaf children, an institution for
disabled people and a school for
orphans. Our students learnt a great
deal from spending time in an
environment and culture very different to
that of Doha.

55. The extra curricular programme at DBS
has continued to flourish with over 700
students across both the primary and
secondary schools participating in a
wide range of sports and other
activities. We are proud to offer such a
diverse range of activities where our
students have developed existing skills
and had the opportunity to try
something new.
Our primary school students have
participated in number of sports
including netball, tag rugby and
basketball as well as yoga and
cheerleading. Many of our youngest
students had developed their skills in
multi skills activity sessions and
construction club while many of our Y6
students have been busy developing
their French skills.
Our Secondary students have also been
fully engaged in the extra curricular life
of the school, again through many
recreational and competitive sports, as
well as drama club, calligraphy and our
animal welfare ECAs, to name just a few.
A number of our Yr 7 & Yr 8 students
were selected to represent DBS in the
annual, prestigious BISQ games which
this year where held at Al Arabi sports
club. Students participated in
swimming, football, netball, basketball
and athletics competing against 14
other BSME accredited schools across
Qatar. This is a fantastic achievement
for all involved and one of which our
students should be extremely proud.
It has been fantastic to see the hard work
and commitment that our students have
shown to the extra curricular programme
but this would not be possible without
the dedication and hard work shown
from staff, and the support from parents.
A huge thank you to you all.
I have had a thoroughly enjoyable first
year at DBS and I look forward to further
developing our ECA programme next
year.

56. DBS Model United Nations has had its
most exciting year with 4 conferences, 1
award and over 70 students attending
weekly sessions run by its inspiring
student leaders Asma Muhammad,
Juanita Gomez, Flynn Gomez, Natalie
Magness, Elina Kalmouni, Faiz
Mahmood, Saket Barhade, Leena
Fraihat, Noor Omar and Muhammed
Arsal Taimoor.
During MUN, students learn key skills
like team building, public speaking,
improvisation and debating, with
challenges and activities designed to
improve confidence and global affairs
knowledge.
Highlights this year have included the
annual Qatar Leadership Conference
(QLC). This three-day conference was a
fantastic opportunity for students to
develop skills in leadership,
communication, diplomacy, and
entrepreneurship. This year was
particularly special as 9 of our students
have delivered a workshop and 2 of
them even presented at the WISE
conference!
The largest conference we attended was
THIMUN Qatar, an educational
simulation of the United Nations that
involves schools from all over the world.
There, we took part in the Global Act
Impact Award (GAIA) competition where
our fantastic team of yr12 and yr13
students won the second prize for the
tremendous work they have been doing
as Downtown Doha to help and support
the workers, supporting SDG1 (No
Poverty). We are ever so proud of them!
This year was very special to us as we
organised our very first DBS Conference!
The students leadership team, led by
Natalie Magness as President of the
Conference and Elina Kalmouni as Vice
President, delivered an incredible
opportunity for all DBS students to
discuss issues on the theme of ‘a small
step’ debating on local and global
issues. We are immensely proud of our
first conference and of all of our students
(chairs, admin, press and delegates)
who made this conference a great
success! Next year, we are hoping to
open our conference to schools in Qatar
and make it a national conference!
Finally, we have also had the immense
privilege of becoming members of the
Advisory Board of THIMUN Qatar,
representing the school amongst other
prestigious schools of Qatar and having a
voice on the organisation of the THIMUN
conference. This will open incredible
opportunities to our students such as
application for admin at the prestigious
conference next year! We are all so humble
and excited about this opportunity!
Thank you to all the students and staff
who have made this MUN year an even
more incredible one than last year! The
impact you have made this year on the
community and on others is incredible!
We look forward to seeing you all again
and to seeing new faces next year for
more surprises!
