7. Issues Digging out of sorrow AN avalanche of mud, dirt and debris engulfed homes in Zhouqu county in Gansu on Saturday at midnight. It also buried survivors in inescapable sorrow. The tragedy struck when rain-triggered mudslides ripped through streets and homes in Zhouqu county, of Gansu’s Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture. The death toll had risen to 337 by Monday night, with 1,148 others still missing. There are several reasons behind the disaster: the county’s loose terrain; the Wenchuan earthquake that shook the mountains around Zhouqu; the drought and soil erosion since last winter; the torrential rain on Saturday night. Forest fire's ripple effect extends globally PRESENT-DAY Moscow looks like this: Kremlin and golden church cupolas have disappeared behind a layer of smoke. Residents who haven’t fled the city wear protective masks or simply clutch wet rags to their faces. And drivers switch on their headlights in broad daylight. The acrid haze has been caused by a massive forest fire that is both burning acres of land and causing a ripple effect across Europe. Officials said Friday over 867 million square meters of woodland and peat bog were burning in at least 17 of the country’s 83 regions. So far, the fire has caused over 50 deaths.

9. Campus Life HE may be more than 1,600km from Harbin, but Peng Yu, a Shijiazhuang senior high graduate, has already had a picture of what his life will be like at the Harbin Institute of Technology. He has already seen the excellent cyber cafe where he can play games online. He has seen the campus’ popular dating spots. He has even seen the bed he will sleep in. Rather than take the traditional campus tour and discovering its various delights with his fellow undergraduates, Peng has undertaken an online orientation. This is, after all, the digital age, and senior high graduates looking for the perfect college life are leaving nothing to chance with their preparations. As a result, university BBS, and social networking sites are popular places for students to prepare for college.

24. Facing the invasion of the superbugs A killer bug spreading across the globe like wildfire sounds like something out of a bad sci- fi film. But while this is still the stuff of fantasy, microbiologists are concerned about the news of an enzyme( 酶 ) with the potential to convert all bacteria into superbugs resistant to treatment. New Delhi Metallo-1 (NDM-1) is already widespread in India and Pakistan, according to the Lancet Infectious Disease journal. There have also apparently been 50 cases in Britain.
