How Did You Attract Your Audience
How We Attracted Our Audience
• We attracted our audience by researching what films of a
15 rated film would be attracted to.
• The two main films we researched where 'The Lovely
Bones' and 'Hide and Seek'. We picked these two films
because the lovely bones film rating is 12a and hide and
seek has a UK film rating of 15. So they have a similar
rating to our film has.
We applied the research we did by;
• - We used to lovely bones because the films colours are
very vivid and stand out especially when Susie is in the
dream world. In our film it starts with a flashback so we
used this to show a flashback of the two girls when they
were younger. This gave a dreamy effect by highlighting
the colours and also a false equilibrium. We did this
when editing by highlighting the colours and also
changing the colour saturation.
We applied the research we did by;
• - We used the research we did of hide and seek to come
up with the idea of using a mentally unstable main
character. So we made our main character to be mentally
unstable and have a life long grudge on her sister.
What We Found Out.
• We found out what people enjoyed most in a horror film and
then we narrowed it down to the genre we ended up making
our film to physiological thriller. We gave the questionnaire to
age appropriate people we gave them to all different ages
upwards of 15. From our findings we decided to create a
physiological thriller. We also decided to go with a female lead
role to go against the typical conventions of our genre. People
often get bored of the same conventions in films so we
thought if we actually realised our film it would do well
because people would want to see a type film that hasn't
been done before.
• We attracted our audience by researching exactly what they
would want to see in a film but also what they wouldn't like to
see in a film.
Who Would Be Your Audience?
Our film is a 15 rated film.
The 15 Symbol Means;
• No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or
buy/rent a ‘15’ rated DVD. 15 rated works are not suitable for
children under 15 years of age.
• 15 works are stronger than 12 or 12A rated works and could include
any of the following:
• strong violence
• frequent strong language (eg 'f***').
• portrayals of sexual activity
• strong verbal references to sex
• sexual nudity
• brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual
violence
• discriminatory language or behaviour
• drug taking
The 15 Symbol Means;
• At 15 sexual activity can be portrayed, as long as there is
no strong or graphic detail. Some sex scenes can be quite
long at this category and may involve some nudity and
movement. Though nudity may be allowed in a sexual
context there should be no strong detail. Also there can
be strong references to sex and sexual behaviour, but
especially strong or crude references are unlikely to be
acceptable unless justified by context.
• At a rating 15 discriminatory language should not be
encouraged.
• In 15 films heterosexual and homosexual relationships
are treated the same.
The 15 Symbol Means;
• Many horror films are rated 15. At 15 there can be strong
threat and menace (as long as it is not sadistic or
sexualised), although the strongest gory images are unlikely to
be acceptable.
• At 15 drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must
not promote or encourage drug misuse.
• Dangerous behaviour such as hanging, suicide and self-
harming should not dwell on detail which could be copied.
How does your media product
represent different particular social
groups?
Social Groups;
• Our media product represents mostly young people as the begging
clips are children then the other clips are of young adults. This is
within the opening 2 minutes, if we were to do the full film as
described in our treatment then it would represent more then just
young people as the detective is older around the age of 50 and her
sidekick is also older around the age of 30. In the full film we also
see the mother character and she is also older around the age of 40.
Throughout the film we see different age groups as we see the clips
of the girls growing up. In our full film it will show how the character
of Susie is different to the character of Eva, the have different social
status as Susie is very popular and liked at school and Eva is not
because she has possible mental issues. Having this difference in the
social status makes us almost sympathise with the character of Eva
even though she is the protagonist and murderer in the film. This
challenges the usual conventions of a film of our genre psychological
thriller, does not only make the film more interesting but also makes
the film stand out from previous films that are already out there.
Lookingback at yourpreliminarytask, what
do youfeel youhavelearnt in the progression
fromit to the full product?
A lot…
What have you learnt?
• Looking back at my prelim task I feel like I have learnt a lot
more about the media technology like the cameras and
editing suite. I also feel I have improved my team work
skills, my preliminary group was different to my final group
but on the whole I worked well with both groups. The group I
was in for my prelim was a group of four people and I feel this
worked better than the group of three I was with for my final
task because the work load was more spread out evenly. For
my A2 project I think I will work in a group of four for that so
the workload is more even. I feel like I have improved my
overall media knowledge too I think I would be able to mange
a small project on my own. The only thing I still need to
improve is more advanced use of the editing suite but I have
learnt a lot more about it since my prelim.
