2. TOPIC: NEED OF RESEARCH IN THE TEACHING
LEARNING PROCESS
Introduction
Research is a process to study the basic
problems which contribute in the edifice human knowledge. The
research process establishes new truth, finds out new facts,
formulates new theory and suggest new applications. The main
focus of education is on the development of a child. The teaching
process brings the desirable change among learners.
A social research encompasses scientific
investigations conducted in the field of social sciences and also in
behavioral sciences. Social research is a very broad category with in
which there are many subclasses. According to P.V Young, a social
research is the systematic method of discovering new facts or
verifying old facts, their sequences, interrelationships, causal
explanations and the natural law which govern them “. The purpose
of research is to unfold the truth by systematic methods. It may
involve the manipulation of concepts or symbols inorder to correct
or verify the existing knowledge or ideas so that an operational
generalization may be made in the shape of a theory. A research
may aim at the following thing:
(a) To find new generalization with old data
(b) To known old conclusions with new data.
(c)To attempt to reach more conclusions form the
same set of data.
(d) To put forward an entirely original idea or theory,
or to discover an unexplored horizon of knowledge.
(e) To find or to resolve contractions existing in the
areas of study.
In social sciences, a research is
responsible for developing a body of principles to explain the
emerging phenomena adequately and, at the same time, must
suggest practical guidelines to solve the immediate problems.
NEED OF RESEARCH IN TEACHING LEARNING
The following are the important needs of
research in the teaching learning process.
(1)Acquisition of knowledge: knowledge is power. The thirst for
knowledge has been responsible for vast variety of research work
even when no material incentive was present. The research in the
field of teaching learning process helps to understand the problems
3. and contributes of new knowledge in the form of new theory, facts
and truth.
(2)Planning: Any planning would depend on the systematic
knowledge of the resources, problems, and objectives. Research in
learning process can give us the detailed picture of the means and
ends in the education. It also helps to systematic planning of
curriculum and preparing the classes in accordance with the pupils.
(3)Classroom understanding and Good will: Research pinpoints
the need for interdependence among different groups. It gives a
clear weight age to independent and reasoned opinion and helps to
promote good will and understanding among students. It brings out
the unity among pupils in classroom with considering individual
differences.
(4)Prediction: Research aims at finding an order among the social
facts by making causal connection. Research in the teaching
learning process can make predictions about after effects of
learning. It also can predict the education and economic
development of a country. Research can also predict problems and
success of educational programmers and class room learning.
(5)Modernization of Tools and Techniques: With the progress of
research, the tools and techniques of learning become modernized
and up date. Researches lead adopting child centered and more
recent techniques of learning.
(6) Increase efficiency in the teaching process: Research can
unfold and identify the causes of issues in learning process. In this
sense, it can help to take the necessary action for eradications of
problems in the learning process. Research can give sound
guidelines for appropriate measure of reform in teaching process
and increase efficiency of teachers.
(7)Use of psychological principles: Research in teaching learning
process help applying psychological principles in teaching learning
processes.
In short, research is a curious
course of enquiry, satisfying human desire to know the facts. It
increases the stock of knowledge it focuses our attention to social
reality and social events. Research in teaching learning process help
us to scientifically judge and accept the pupil’s behavior in
classroom
NEED FOR DEVELOPING INNOVATING TECHNIQUES
AND STRATEGIES IN PEDAGOGY AND EVALUTATION
(1)Fitting new level of knowledge: Developing innovative
techniques in pedagogy and evaluation is very necessary for
discovering new facts and verification of the old ones. It involves
the application of scientific method for the understanding and
4. analyzing existing system in order to modify, correct or verify the
existing knowledge.
(2)New system of assessment and evaluation: Evaluation is
the process of assigning value to something. In education
evaluation is objective based. The importance of innovative
techniques in evaluation is following:
Evaluation enhances the quality of teaching.
Teachers are able to assess the degree to which
they have succeeded in their teaching.
A good evaluation motivates learners to learn the
topic well.
Innovative evaluation techniques can help in
bringing changes in the curriculum.
The new trends that emerged from all these attempts
to modernize evaluation in order to make it an integral
part of the teaching learning process can be
summarized as follows:
(a) It should be continuous
(b) Giving immediate feedback to
learner.
(c) It should be comprehensive.
.
(3) Understand learner: The new techniques in teaching help to
understand learner. It may help to arranging teaching process in
accordance with the ability of the pupils. Modern child centered
methods like discussion method; debate method, etc. are very
useful to understand the learner.
(4) To cater individual differences: New techniques in pedagogy
are very necessary to know the individual differences among
learners. It help to realize slow learners and gifted students and
conducting remedial teaching for slow learners.
(5) Keeping with the latest developments: Teaching of current
events is an essential part of social science curriculum as it
promotes the education of children along the lines of human
relationships. In the fast changing dynamic world of today, text
books are likely to become obsolete in view of changing conditions.
The only way the citizen can keep himself up-to-date is to develop
and maintain a perpetual in terms of current events as reported
through the Medias. This would help in bridging the gap between
information contained in books and the rapidly changing world.
A variety of innovative activities
may be used for teaching current events. They are panel
discussions, debate, drawing cartoons, news maps. Broadcasts, wall
of the world etc.
(6) Making learning permanent: It means that innovative
evaluation techniques motivate learners. The students try to learn
5. the topics well are continuously evaluated. The tests used for
evaluation are constructed on the basis of the syllabus in that
subject thoroughly that he can succeed at the various stages of
evaluation. It makes learning permanent in nature.
