Structure:
ABOUT THE DISSERTATION
Objective:
Evaluate the extent to which
adaptation policies are
present in the national
tourism strategic plan of
some European countries.
3. Tourism is a climate-sensitive
activity
Significantly contributes to the
emission of GHG
CLIMATE CHANGE AND TOURISM
Urgent need to speed up
climate action in the
tourism industry
Taking into account climate
change in tourism policy
constitutes a crucial shift for the
sector’s resilience
Historically, tourism institutions
pursued mainly economic goals
Failed to develop effective
policies to address the issue
4. Adaptation entails lowering the
risks and vulnerabilities through
the modification of current
systems (IPCC, 2022).
Mitigation entails cutting back
on the emission of greenhouse
gases that trap heat in the
atmosphere

processes, or structures to account for shifting climatic circumstances (Leary
et al., 2001).

6. Evaluation of the
existence of adaptation
objectives, if any.
SECOND STEP
METHODOLOGY

presence of adaptation
strategies, evaluating
their readability,
applicability, relevance,
and concreteness
THIRD STEP
Determination of whether

primary concern guiding
the national tourism
strategic plans.

Evaluation criteria of the adaptation policies and strategies in NTSPs
Source: Author’s elaboration based on Datawrapper
The majority of the plans
analyzed have limited
room in relation to
adaptation policies.
Almost half of the
provided adaptation
strategies did not
comply with the identified
evaluation criteria.
12. THE MAIN
TAKEAWAYS
Climate change as a strategic
variable in developing and managing
national tourism plans
Knowledge and awareness are
crucial aspects to effectively respond
to climate change
Future tourism strategic plans must
be built on a foundation of
sustainability
